SAMA AWARD NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED NEXT WEEK
The seventh annual SAMA Awards, for excellence in all genres of the SA music scene, will be presented at the usual swish ceremony being held, this year, at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg on April 5. Recognized as the most relevant and prestigious SA music awards, these are the little statuettes the artists most want to win and the fans most talk about, The SAMA Awards ceremony has, since its inaugural event in 1995, become the highlight of the music calendar.
The record for most awards won in a year belongs to TKZee who in 1999 walked off with four - Best Duo or Group, Best Kwaito Album, Best Kwaito Single and Best Single. Ladysmith Black Mambazo have been top winners in two different years - in 1997 they won two awards and then in 2000 they headed the winners list with three awards (along with Busi Mhlongo and Themba Mkhize). Weve got a fiver on both Semisane for Best Pop Album for A Life Less Strange, and Marcus Wyatt for Best Jazz Album for Gathering. So watch out for those nominations next week. And dont forget to watch the US version of the SAMA Awards on Thursday evening. Apparently this years Grammy live performances include a duet between Elton John and Eminem! And good luck to our nominees, Miriam Makeba and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. (SS)

COLLECTIVE SOUL IN SA
The first international act to tread SA boards in 2001 is the Atlanta-based pop group Collective Soul. This tight five piece grew up together in Stockbridge, Georgia and have stuck together through five huge-selling albums - Hints Allegations And Things Left Unsaid, Collective Soul, Disciplined Breakdown, Dosage, and Blender - and a string of successful singles (eight No 1s apparently!), including Gel, December, Where The River Flows, The World I Know, Precious Declaration and Listen (Yeah, I know, maybe if I hear them).
So these US rockers will be appearing at the Three Arts in Cape Town on March 8 and at the Sun City Superbowl on March 10. Booking is exclusively through ticketweb.co.za. 0831 400 500/0821 400 500 Tickets range from R135 - R165

SA MOURNS MOSES MOLELEKWA
Tributes have been pouring in for Moses Taiwa Molelekwa (28) whose tragic death, as well as that of his wife, Florence Mtoba, shocked the SA music nation last Wednesday. Molelekwa was found hanging from the rafters of his Newtown Precinct office on Tuesday evening, alongside the sprawled body of his wife. No clear explanations have emerged for this supremely talented pianists apparent suicide. Molelekwas career had been on the rise over the past few years and his reputation was beginning to spread internationally.
Rashied Lombard and ESP Afrika took him to the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague (twice) and his acclaimed appearances contributed greatly to the decision to stage that Jazz Festival in Cape Town. Molelekwa was honoured with a slot on the Cape Town bill in 2000 and was due to appear again this year. He had released two albums, his debut Finding Ones Self (1994) and the very highly regarded Genes And Spirits (1998) on the MELT 2000 label. Moses Molelekwa grew up in Tembisa. His grandfather was a jazz pianist and his father earned the nickname Monk for his love of the US jazz legend, Thelonius Monk. He emerged from the struggle generation of the 80s to find a place in the new SA as one of its favourite jazz sons. He will be impossible to replace and will live in the hearts of his many fans, both in SA and abroad through his vibrant, eclectic and passionate music. (SS)

DYLAN FOR AN OSCAR?
The Oscar Nominations, announced last week, include one for Bob Dylan for Things Have Changed his very succinct, poignant and specially written contribution to the Wonder Boys soundtrack. The almost 60-year-old (in May) has already picked up the Golden Globe Award for Best Song, and thats always a big pointer to the eventual Oscar winner. So we will definitely be treated to a live performance by rocks greatest poet on the night and possibly a rambling, mumbled and obscure acceptance speech, similar to the one delivered to a confused audience at a Grammy Awards ceremony some years ago. Rock fans have not been this excited about the Oscars since Elliot Smith played his moody tune from Good Will Hunting but lost to Celine Dions song about a boat. Go Bobby!!
There is also some SA Oscar interest with two documentary films gaining nominations. Theres On Tip Toes: Gentle Steps To Freedom, the short film about Ladysmith Black Mambazo and their mastery and worldwide expose of isicathamiya, and Long Nights Journey Into Day', the full length documentary about the Truth Commission. RIKU LATTI LEADS AFRIKAANS MUSIC INTO THE 21st CENTURY
Afrikaans music. Yeeeeuuuuugggh, huh?
Safari suits ... koeksusters ... tannies ... 'Forces' Favourites' ... Sonja... Bles - that's what it's all about....
Not SO. Rikku Latti has delivered a double-barrelled message of intent to Afrikaans music and it's called 'n Pleister Vir My Nerwe, an album destined to change the boundaries and perceptions of the genre.
But Riku is no revolutionary, he does not wantonly destroy to completely re-build; he takes tradition and bends it to his purpose, making it more modern, forward-looking and infinitely more cool.
On this double CD Riku has laid a lot of colourful cards on the table - a veritable running flush of introspective ballads, rockers and (the joker?) a funky hip-hop manifesto - a slice of local thuglife that reveals his gangsta of a heart. One suspects, even with such a strong hand, that Riku still has a couple of aces up his sleeve in reserve.
Variety and versatility sprawl across this double album, a bright cavalcade of styles and attitudes that keep the listener entranced.
"Ek voel die woorde in jou longe le tussen asem and nikotien" ... a
lyrical line full of longing and regret that glistens from the rocking,
melodic and atmospheric 'Pakpoort', one of 'n Pleister Vir My Nerwe's
standout tracks and a clear candidate for radio play.
The songwriting is strong throughout, but what illuminates and animates the words and instrumental playing is the crisp and modern production, crafted by Riku and Peter Auret. The use of studio techniques and technology gives the album a clean, cutting-edge feel that distances it from most of the music in the Afrikaans genre.
I can't help putting 'Valley' on the CD player's repeat function: after a "beef" with the cops Riku dons "nike cap ... sneakers ... en goud op my nek" and completely wiggas out with a riotous hip-hip romp that sees him hooking up with homies erbal T (a play on Ice-T) to rap about bitches and the thuglife. What makes the track smack with some authenticity is the sharp, dancing beat and Riku's gruff bark.
'n Pleister Vir My Nerwe is an important album, one which sets standards and shifts parameters. It's a work that most of Riku's peers will have great difficulty in surpassing, or even, I suspect, in matching.

HOME COOKING - SOUNDS DELICIOUS
Okay, the group is called Home Cooking, and their debut album is called Sounds Delicious, although it could work the other way as well. This is described on the cover as "music made in Durban Kwazulu-Natal South Africa" and for once, believe the (very low key) hype! That statement is absolutely true, although it doesnt tell you enough about this quartet who have been playing in and around those sunny parts for the past five years. They play a fresh, jazzy and happy batch of original songs and are the archetypal Splashy Fen group and one can almost picture them playing their tunes to an ecstatic bunch of laid-back Fenners (They have already appeared at a few Splashy Festivals). It has the sounds of Kwazulu-Natal scattered all over the album, even the opening track is called Kwazulu to remove all doubt as to where their inspiration comes from.
The band are Pippa Dones on vocals, pianos, keyboards and pennywhistle; Yoyo Sikhosana on drums and backing vocals, Lawrence Vusi Mkhize on guitar and backing vocals and Marius Botha on fretless bass and backing vocals. Pippa and Marius wrote all these songs and a very diverse bunch they are too. Its vibrant, joyous music, with a strong and quality jazz base, a tight but light rhythm section, and Pippa Dones bending her vocals around some complex arrangements and emotional lyrics. Hire Purchase Blues is a relevant, blues workout with some sympathetic guitar licks from Vusi. He also does his "Wes Montgomery plays kwela" for the opening track, Kwazulu, which immediately introduces you to the bands definitive sound and Pippa Dones stirring voice, backed as always by her deep-voiced male backing singers.
A personal highlight is Indian Ocean, which has a lovely, lilting quality, evocative guitars, a cool piano solo, and impressive vocals from Pippa and her male choir, making it one of those songs that demands repeated playings. There are 14 similar tracks on Sounds Delicious among which Mirror Images, Off the Wing, Living Here and Bazaruto specially stand out. The album was recorded at the bands Home Studios in Sea View, Durban, and it was engineered, mixed, and produced by David Birch. Like they sing on Banana Mango Tango: "Theres more to Durban then the Golden Mile, check out the people, youre sure to smile". So full credit to Home Cooking for such an openhearted, unashamed love song album to the music, language and culture of Kwazulu-Natal. (7) (SS)

JORGE CARLOS ON SPIRIT ZONE AFRICA
South Africas Afri-trance master, Jorge Carlos, has contributed two tracks on African Spirit, the official Spirit Zone Anthology For Africa on Zulu Warrior Records. Joining him on this prestigious 10-song collection is Nagual with two tracks, Swazi Skank and Animals, and Krushed n Sorted with Breaker. Jorge Carlos recorded two new tracks, Haibo and Afrodisiac for this album on a special request from this very respected trance label from Germany. These tracks were recorded in "Sanafrica" and mastered at the Spirit Zone Sound Studios in Hamburg.
Jorge Carlos is currently recording tracks for the sequel to his internationally famous Trip Of Africa trance masterpiece debut from 1999. He appears on the Colorfields track Strange on the acclaimed It compilation of Cape Towns most interesting artists. But his red-hot rhythm section partnership with drummer Ash Reid has long ended since he left Colorfields. More recently Jorge Carlos has been jamming/rehearsing with Cape Towns jazz-rock combo Madame Freak, as they prepare for their appearance at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Cape Town at the end of March. Jorge on percussion joins Jayne Mayne (guitar), Karen Rutter (drums), Robbie Stemmett (bass) and Wolfgang Wunderlich (keyboards) for that performance, a huge honour for these Café Camissa favourites and the only Cape Town group so far appearing on the jazz festival bill. SHILOH'S CORNER
ELECTRIC FLAG
A combination of psychedelic rock, Chicago blues, rock and roll and funky soul. It was the summer of love, 1967, and the combination talents of the Electric Flag include Harvey Brooks on bass guitar, Nick Gravenites, the formidable Mike Bloomfield on lead guitar and Barry Goldberg on the keyboards, Buddy Miles on the drums. Nick Gravenites took the lead vocals and no stranger to the world of psychedelic rock and blues, formerly with the Quick Silver Messenger Service and later with Al Cooper the combination was all set for an all-star American band.
The floor opened up when the Electric Flag were asked to do music for a film starring Peter Fonda and Jack Nicolsen, namely the movie The Trip. Most likely their debut performance was at the first hippie rock festival ever, the Monterey pop festival. Following Monterey the band often performed at the San Francisco ballroom and Bill Graham's Fillmore alongside Cream, Steve Miller Band and the Grateful Dead. Finally in spring of '68 they released their debut album "A long time coming." Further afield they then set about to record music for a new movie called "You are what you eat", a rare cult sixties soundtrack not easily available these days.
Barry Goldberg was the first to bail out and then the departure of Mike Bloomfield. Mike Bloomfield had serious health problems, chronic insomnia and it just simply got to much for him. Crashing ego's and burnout led to the demise of the band. Those who remained, replaced Bloomfield on the guitar and released another album entitled "An American music band.", now headed by Buddy Miles. In the words of Nick Gravenites Electric Flag was a bitter-sweet experience. It was a platform for greater things. The name of the band came when they were playing at a High School gig and they had an electric flag which had a base with a pipe sticking out and a motor so that the wind would blow out of the holes and make the flag wave. It seemed symbolic.
Barry Goldberg went on to release some outstanding solo albums with various session guitarists such as Harvey Mandel and Duane Allman. One of the finest Hammond B3 players to emerge alongside Booker T and Al Kooper. Mike Bloomfield, America's answer to Eric Clapton did a series of super session albums with Al Kooper, but his finest moments are sourced in the early Paul Butterfield albums. Buddy Miles released a deafening progressive Jazz Rock album with Carlos Santana which is now something of a collectors item. In one sense the Electric Flag was a short and strange trip with touches of acid genius and a remarkable fusion of colour.

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music
éVOID - éVOID' (RetroFresh, FRESHCD 106)
These guys get into a groove then decorate it nicely. This is dance rock music, rhythmic rock -- very rhythmic. Definitely meant to move a dancehall or club. I can only imagine what good times their live shows must have been. Someday I'll stop in at the Springbok Bar in London to catch the Windrich Brothers.
That's Lucien Windrich on vocals and guitars and Erik Windrich on vocals, keyboards, and bass synthesizers. Wayne Harker plays drums, and a couple of guest musicians play on three songs. These few guys work up a sweat with each tune, and like the Via Afrika Retro Fresh release, the sound is clear and three-dimensional.
'éVoid' contains a number of tunes that compel me to listen to them
attentively -- they refuse to be part of the background wash. 'Inda Inda Indaba' is a happy, funky number. 'Junk Jive Part One' plays with the timing and the rhythm in interesting ways. 'Jiving to the Weekend Beat' is a driving song, and not just because they say so in the lyrics, but because it really moves. 'Race of Tan' is not a dance number, but a melancholy, pretty, yearning, and striding rhythm ballad, if that string of adjectives adds up to sense. Though the whole CD is fun, these songs stand out.
I don't include the hits 'Shadows' (1983) and 'Taxi Man' (1984) in the above stand-out list because I knew these excellent songs from before I bought the CD. 'Shadows' and 'Taxi Man' deserve the title classic -- they both are wonderful songs, especially 'Shadows'.
Not to let loose with a discouraging word, but the song 'Jeremiah and
Josephine' doesn't do a thing for me. I can see where some people would
enjoy it, socially relevant and plaintive as it is and all. But I just feel distance, mental and emotional, from this song, whereas I get into 'Race of Tan' that immediately precedes it. I also wonder about the word "fadget." Is this a slang word I'm not familiar with or, more likely, did they make up this word deliberately to catch the ear? It's a nice and strong Devo-esque song, though.
Play 'éVoid' while doing things. It is get up and move around music, not lounge around and be mellow stuff. It has what I look for in music: lack of sedentary tunes or sedation. Neither of those soporific qualities exist here. Music needs to move, and éVoid's dance rock sound moves.
Additionally, the alternate versions are different enough to avoid
repetitiveness, and the liner notes tell the éVoid story thoroughly.
This was Retro Fresh's first release last year, with more to come. If the éVoid and Via Afrika releases are indicative of the quality of future Retro Fresh CDs, then the 2001 releases will form an Essential CD Collection of Classic South African Rock, starting with the éVoid groove.

JOHN SAMSON
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music
LESLEY RAE DOWLING
The little lady with the big voice seemed to come out of nowhere, bursting on the radio in late 1981 with the powerful 'Grips of Emotion'. The strength of this debut single meant that the album was one of the most eagerly anticipated on the local scene for a while. The final product simply entitled 'Lesley Rae Dowling' did not disappoint.
Masterfully produced by none other than Tully McCully, the album offered up 10 futher tracks of the sultry, sexy rock that had made 'Grips..' so exciting. Dowling's strong alto tones entwine themselves around the tight guitar playing of McCully, jostle for attention next to some slick guitar solo's from the omnipresent Jethro Butow, or weave there way around her own well crafted keybord playing.
She's angry and seductive, relfective and mystical. She sings of the exotic ('The Spaniard' & 'Morroco') of the gothic ('The Raven') and the erotic ('Grips of Emotion'). At times the album so sexually charged the album is almost a substitute for foreplay, yet she was somewhat of a recluse, seeming to shy away from public life. This was at odds with the strength of her voice and the upfrontness of her songs.
This must rank as one of the best debut albums by a South African artist, strong gutsy vocals coiled around a tightly produced backdrop of hard edged rock guitar and piano. The album is summed up in the title of the bluesy final track 'Sophistication'.

DIE SLAG VAN SHEPHERD'S BUSH
Koos Kombuis
Dankie, mense, dankie. Dankie dat julle my aand gemaak het. Dis net jammer julle het vir Chris uitgeboe! Foei, wat die drank nie aan n mens doen nie! Dalk was dit n fout om al daai gratis Tassies uit te deel. Maar ag, soos die Engelse sê, what the heck.
Abie Strydom, organiseerder. Lize-Marie, fotograaf en Abie-se-girlfriend. The Walkabout vir uitstekende klank en sekuriteit.

IAN HENDERSON
KwaZulu-Natal music lovers should not miss the opportunity to see one of the city's own rising stars as Ian Henderson performs across the province from 21st February 2001. A Durban-based singer-songwriter, Ian brings with him a talented three-piece band, incorporating Chris Mashiane on drums (African Jazz Pioneers, Bag'isane), Ntsholeng Se'etso on bass (UND Big Band, Ntshollenium Band) and Ralph Deppe on cello (NPO). Ian's passionately personal lyrics and acoustic guitar style shine through eclectic jazz-groove rhythms offset by the haunting melodic refrain of the cello.
Performance dates are:
DURBAN - 21 FEB: Rivets at the Hilton Hotel, 8.30pm
PIETERMARITZBURG - 23 FEB: Hexagon Theatre, 8.00pm. Supported by Chris
Smith and Dave Rossouw. Bookings Tel: 033 34 29297 Cell: 082 377 2610
ST MICHAELS - 25 FEB: The Jam, St Michaels Sands Hotel, 8.00pm
Ian Henderson enters the studio under producer Angus Kerr to record an
11-track debut solo album, "Look of Bliss" on February 11. The album
promises to retain a natural, direct and off-the-cuff nature with fresh and modern sound provided by the above band and some of Durban's currently hip session musicians, including Logan Byrne and Wesley Gibbons. "Look of Bliss" is scheduled for national release on June 4. Ian will be touring throughout South Africa to promote the album during the second half of the year.

THE JAM
43 De Villiers Road, District Six, Cape Town - next to The Shack
March:
Thurs 1: Sugardrive: Catch the boys at the Jam for a rare Cape Town performance.
Fri 2: Max Normal: For those who missed out on the mans previous performance where over 600 happy punters partied well into the night, (and the Jam bursting out of its seams), this ones a definite must. This cabaret style hip-hop outfit from Jo'burg featuring Waddy Tudor Jones (Vocals), Sibot (Turntables), Marc Buchanan (Bass) and Sean Ou Tim on drums has taken Cape Town by storm.
Sat 3: The Awakening: Having more than saturated the South Africa market with the unprecedented success of 6 number 1 singles, constant chart and radio play, extensive media and television coverage, critically acclaimed music videos (one of which was sampled and screened on MTV Europe), The Awakening have released their fourth full-length album, 'The Fourth Seal of Zeen'. Since their birth in 1995, the band has retained a suitably "gothic/underground" persona and outlook, yet they have achieved a cult status that rivals the major label rock bands. Catch them on stage at The Jam as part of their nationwide tour, promoting the new album.
Wed 7: Boo!: SAs number one Monkey Punkers are at it again on the Jam centre stage with their notorious thiatrix. Come and join the band before they leave on a four-month tour of The States and Europe with confirmed gigs in Brussels, Atlanta, New York, London and Paris. Doors open at 9 and R30 covert charge.
Fri 9: Stanton Warriors: They have been commissioned to remix some of the biggest dance tracks in recent times, including Basement Jaxx "Jump & Shout", Fatboy Slim (with Macy Gray) "Demons", Azzido Da Bass "Dooms Night" and The Artful Dodger "Please dont turn me on". To date they have just one release of their own (new tune out in March). "Da Virus" was released last year, as a bass driven beat feast sampling Whodinis "Mr. Magic", on the Mob Records label, which is manned by Tim Binns and Tayo.
Sat 10: Homegrown: This monthly event has been, from the word go, one of the most popular events on the Cape Town dance calendar. Krushed and Sorted, Algorythm and Sublime come together under one roof for an evening of 100% kick ass Drum & Bass.
Sat 17: Boogie Down Knights: The Darker Shadz of Phunk Crew are back at the Jam with one of the most popular hip hop events this side of the equalizer. Join us for a peek into the colourful world of hip hop with B -Boy floor shows, Graffiti expose and two international Djs alongside the best of our local spinners.
Tue 20: Fetish: Since the formation of Fetish in May 1996, and the independent release of their debut album, the band have grabbed the appreciative attention of SA music fans and critics alike.
Sat 24: Irma Records: Funkromania IRMA, a New World and Funk label from Italy presents a showcase of material with DJ Myles, Blunted Stuntman, Bob, Simon, Omar, The Boogie Man and Honey B. R30.
Fri 30: Alternative Nation, The long awaited return: After a years absence and eight packed-out events, the crew returns with an unpredictable and exciting mix-up of rock, hip hop, crossovers and a shot of drum & bass and breaks.
Sat 31: Algorythm: The state of Drum 'n Bass in South Africa and abroad has gone through countless mutations. One thing is for certain, it is not influenced by trends... it sets trends. The people involved with this music are passionate about it and live a 24/7 Drum 'n Bass lifestyle. It is a subculture all on its own.

6.FORUM, REQUESTS AND FEEDBACK
-------------------------------
VETERAN BASSMAN, PAUL ABRAHAMS DIES
Paul Abrahams, bassman and founder of the Cape Town Jazz/Rock group Pacific Express, died last week following complications related to lung cancer.
Paul founded his group in the 70s with the ideal of performing original jazz-rock and fusion music and succeeded in gaining considerable popularity for his outfit despite their "un-commercial" leanings.
Paul's death comes shortly after the re-issue, in December 2000, of the second part of the bands recording anthology that documents the recordings of Pacific Express. The band was a model for many local groups and gave a number of artists the springboard to recognition. Some of these players include Jonathan Butler, Basil Coetzee, Zayn Adam, Tony Cedras, Robbie Jansen and others.
A spokesman for his record label, Mountain Records described Paul as a talented performer and creative composer and said that this humble yet effective bandleader would be sadly missed.
Paul Abrahams was also centrally involved in his Cape Jazz project in a duo with the late Basil Coetzee with whom he recorded and co-wrote on 3 albums.

DEBBIE LAN
I once saw (ONLY ONCE) a stunningly beautiful young S. African on TV - called DEBBIE LAN and I believe Tully Mac had something to do with her album.
I bought her album and was blown away - completely - and heard she went to USA. Do you have any further info of Debbie's career... still singing - writing - playing - touring... or what?
Lastly - DOES SHE HAVE A CD OUT... besides the first one, which I'd die to purchase a CD copy of - as the only album I bought of her was a great ole' Long Playing record (ha ha ha haa).

CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH
From Cape to Canada On CKUW 95.9 FM
Saturday, February 24, 2001, 1:00 p.m. - midnight
Tune in to Celebrate Black History with Us!
In North America, February is Black History Month. It all began in the 1920's when Carter G. Woodson, an African American, created and promoted Negro History Week. February was chosen because it included the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln who were
instrumental in affecting the lives and history of African Americans. In 1976, the month-long celebration was implemented. It is a time for North Americans to reflect on both the history and teachings of African Americans whose contributions are not fully acknowledged.
In honor of Black History Month, The African Summit on CKUW 95.9 FM presents From Cape to Canada, an 11 hour special on February 24, 2001 from 1:00 p.m. until midnight. This exclusive program will highlight music, speeches, poetry, and biographies of Black people who
have worked toward social justice from the huts of Kwa Zulu, South Africa to Africaville in Nova Scotia and everywhere in between.
This special presentation will showcase the richness and diversity of Black people through artists such as Miriam Makeba, Bob Marley, Louis Armstrong, Erika Badu, Sunduza, Black Umfolosi, TKzee, Fela Kuti, Patra, Mutaburuka, Red Rat, Sizzla and leaders such as Nelson Mandela,
Joshua Nkomo, Rosa Parks, Kwame Nkrumah, Nnadi Azikiwe, Shaka Zulu, Fidel Castro, Eric Williams, Walter Rodney, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Albert Luthuli, Steve Biko and many more.
For more information contact Mzilikazi Ndlovu Host/Producer of The African Summit on CKUW 95.9 FM. at (204) 775-1592 or email: mailto:mndlovu@visto.com. The African Summit broadcasts every Saturday from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. You can also access the show via the
World Wide Web at http://www.winnipeg.freenet.mb.ca/ckuw.
