LUCKY DUBE

World-renowned African Reggae superstar Lucky Dube is scheduled to perform at the 9:30 Club in Washington DC on September 20th in support of Africa Alive!

This network of youth/AIDS organizations reaches and empowers youth with innovative HIV/AIDS prevention programs through entertainment in eight of the African countries hardest hit by the AIDS pandemic - including Lucky Dube’s home country South Africa.

South African-born Lucky Dube is one of the country’s most toured and well-loved artists of all time. Having been a prolific force on the South African music industry for nearly 20 years, his music has touched the hearts of millions. He has released nearly 15 albums as a reggae artist, many of which have been record breakers in the South African industry with phenomenal sales figures across the globe.

One of South Africa’s most recognised artists, Lucky Dube has picked up more awards than most other South African acts and his latest album ‘The Way It Is’ is flying off shelves in record stores across the world.

His energetic 13-piece band has toured with him across the globe as musical ambassadors of South Africa, once again globe trotting on what guarantees to be one of the most successful American tours of all time.
Setting out on the 11th September, Lucky will play in the cities of San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles, Boulder, Boston, Rhode Island, New York and many others. He will also be sharing the stage with reggae legends Sly and Robbie and Black Uhuru on the 21st September in Boston.

Lucky Dube and Africa Alive!’s common goal for the concert is to raise awareness of the AIDS epidemic in Sub-Saharan Africa, which has close to 70% of the global total of HIV positive people as well as letting the public know there is something they can do to help even while at their computer. Technology donated by Ubrandit.com (AMEX:UBI) will allow 10% of the retail price of each item sold on the Africa Alive! online CD store (with over a million titles to choose from) to be donated to Africa Alive!, thus shoppers can make a worthwhile contribution to preventing the spread of HIV while enjoying the convenience of shopping online.

For one month beginning September 20th, Lucky Dube’s CD titled 'The Way It Is' will be featured at a 50% discount. The online store can be found at the Africa Alive! website http://www.africaalive.org. Direct donations may also be made through the site via credit card by clicking on the DONATIONS icon on the home page.

SA MUSIC IN THE SPOTLIGHT...

Just doing it... They came, they sang, they conquered. Just Jinger's Art Matthews wowed the crowds at the sell-out Amabala Music Festival at the Shepherd's Bush Empire on Friday and Saturday night. Sharing the stage with London-based Just Jinger were some of the biggest names on the South African music scene - Springbok Nude Girls, Sugardrive, Henry Ate and Nagual, not forgetting comedian Barry Hilton.

Organisers Trenton Birch and Neil Rawlinson of Amabala Productions were over the moon about the success of the festival, which attracted close to 4 000 people. "It has left a solid foundation for us to build on," said Rawlinson. "[British] people are aware now that South African music is on the map" added Birch. Next year Amabala hope to add Kwaito, African jazz and hip-hop to the line-up.

JAMMING AT THE JAM

The Valiant Swart band was in top form on Friday night at the Jam in Cape Town.

Valiant Swart: Vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, mouth organ
Vernon Swart: drums
Simon "Agent" Orange: keyboards
Schalk Joubert: bass
Albert Frost: lead guitar

Coming on at 11pm and playing through until about 12.30, these seasoned musicians rocked the Jam. The set featured songs from Valiant's back-catalogue of CDs and the crowd greeted each song like an old friend. The music was good rock and blues, but thankfully there was no mention of Route 66 or Highway 64 or Memphis Tennessee... these are songs sung in Afrikaans about living and loving in South Africa. Makes a great change.

The closing jam was at least 20 minutes long and something Jimi Hendrix, The Who or Deep Purple would have been proud of. "Wow" is such a small word, but wow, I was stunned! (BC)

SHARP CUTS VOLUME 2: ROCK THE NATION!

I feel so wishy-washy. It doesn't matter which 'Sharp Cuts' I'm
listening to, I think whichever one currently cranked up is the best of the three. This week, 'Sharp Cuts #2' sounds the best: it rocks and the lyrics of many tunes rise way above boy and girl la la songs.

Not only does 'Sharp Cuts #2' rock, it is full of classic SA songs,
many of which are available nowhere else.

So this week I'm positive: this is the best 'Sharp Cuts' CD. (I know I
was positive when writing about 'Sharp Cuts' #1 two weeks ago. And, I
begrudgingly admit, next week I'll be just as positive about #3...)

'No No No No' -- The Asylum Kids rock, a strong opener that is basic, as in a spare and lean (I want to say elemental, but they are on track 6). 'No No No No' is a rhythmic track with some pure rock rawness.

'This Boy' -- Sweatband yields nice electric spray and a rock-steady beat. I especially like the lines that begin, "...where the hills of Africa hold back the sea...." Is this song about a boy, or a people -- a rocking nation? Both, I think.

'Weeping' -- To say too little about this song might give the wrong
impression if the understatement is missed so I'd better go on at length. This is a great song, anytime, anywhere. The lyrics can be interpreted as personal, though they are obviously socio-political. 'Weeping' is as profound as sometimes only the simplest stories, or parables, can be. I never fail to be moved by this quietly dramatic Bright Blue song. Next year, Brightest Blue? {The rumoured Best Of compilation CD - ed}

'Be-Bop-Pop' -- The Spectres made what seems to be one of the favorite song of many South Africans. "Infectious" is a word often used, and this number is infectious in the sense of enjoying having "Be bop pop, be bop pop pop," run through one's mind like a cool fever.

'Six String Razor' -- Mauritz Lotz burns up the wires on this hot
instrumental -- I'll bet he has grooves in his fingers from the cutting
strings. A deliberate, precise, and wild song.

'Clowns (See Yourself)' -- EllaMental sings a wonderful song, fine vocals, a rocking number with dance overtones.

'Damsel' {A cover of Bob Dylan's 'As I Went Out Went One Morning' - ed} -- Too bad Tribe After Tribe didn't have the commercial success to match their talent, or to match their after-the-fact influence and popularity. I have one of the Three Fish CDs and in it I can see the growth of Robb's work (like I can see the organic growth of Bernard Binns from his early work in The Helicopters). Like Binns has not lost touch with the primary task of a rock musician, Robbie and the band know their first obligation is to rock. A stand-out song.

'Slow Rain' by the Celtic Rumors has a nice thumping bass, strong vocals, and moves well.

'Makin' Out With Granny' -- by Falling Mirror. Oh, make that 'by the Great Falling Mirror'. Five minutes long, but who notices? A rockin' way to pass time. It's ominous, catchy, hard-edged in tone, and completely dance-worthy -- what a rock song! My spine becomes rhythmically sinuous when listening to this one (not a pretty sight, but I'm grooving to a fine tune). 'Zen Boulders' or 'Hammerhead Hotel' soon, one hopes?

{'Hammerhead Hotel' is the, as yet, unreleased Falling Mirror album recorded in the mid-90s - ed}

'Golden Days' -- The Kêrels drive ahead with an enthusiastic, up tempo tune with a rock 'n' roll influence.

'Monster from the Bog' -- The Psycho Reptiles serve up a heavy rocker -- and such a light and attractive name....! A brisk walking rhythm and a male chorus on the catchy refrain.

'Do the Lurch' -- Uh, a dance number, sort of, by The Cherry Faced Lurchers (A funny band name -- can't you picture someone matching that name staggering into your next jol?). It has an effective rawness I enjoy -- sounds live. Do the Lurch.

'Complicated Game' {a cover of the XTC song - ed} -- Peach. Ah, Peach. These girls were pretty faces who could rock. Peach is just a girl band like Little Sister is a couple of chicks -- no way! Both bands are, or were in the case of Peach, comprised of wonderful musicians making fine songs. I am a Peach fan, and this is a heavy rocker. The rapid chanting vocals make an interesting counterpoint to the slower beat.

'Goema' -- The Genuines' rapid hard rocker, double meaning of the name
intended. This is genuine stuff, driving rock with a strong, distinctive vocalist.

'Record Companies' -- This Wild Youth song makes me wonder if they ever
signed with one -- not because there's anything wrong with the song, but because they criticize the industry. But what's punk if not angry music made by disenfranchised youth? This is a riotous, and righteous, punker with a lead shouter. Come to think of it, some American record companies could use a few slams, too.

'Johnny's Conscience' -- Corporal Punishment, the band James Phillips was in before The Cherry Faced Lurchers. Another raw tune, rock stripped to its bones, and something I look for. I appreciate a band whose songs sound fresh, like they do when performed live. This one sounds live, also, and has a pleasant, lurching beat and laconic vocals.

'Crying Without Emotion' -- A heartfelt and urgent dance-pop song by The Streetwalkers closes this rocking, even hard-rocking, CD.

'Sharp Cuts #2' has seventeen tracks and lasts for nearly 72 minutes.
The songs flow from one to another seamlessly. Eleven tracks clock in at over four minutes, four of those at five or more minutes -- without filler. Some really good stuff here.

The three 'Sharp Cuts' CDs are important to my collection of South
African rock CDs, right beside 'The Best of SA Pop' CDs. Unfortunately, One World currently lists only #3 -- but the ever-helpful Andy might be able to find a few CDs for those who, like me, had to scramble when learning the Rodriguez CDs were going out of print.

Not to get too serious, but not only is 'Sharp Cuts #2' full of rocking
songs, it is also a document of South African rock music history.

6.CLASSIC ROCK
----------------

THE DOMINO THEORY - BOLLAND

Rob & Ferdi Bolland hit the big time as producers of Falco's worldwide smash hit 'Rock Me Amadeus'. 'You're in the Army Now' was also covered by Status Quo which reached number 2 on the UK charts (the original hit number 9 on the SA charts). Not bad for a couple of brothers from PE.

I found 'The Domino Theory' an interesting album. It's has a mixture of
Vietnam and Cold War theme to it. Released in 1982, the Cold War theme is understandable. The album opens with an 'Overture' which sounds like a synthesized marimba, which quickly flows into 'You're in the Army Now', a strong vocal set against a rhythmic synth beat.

The rest of the first side features more of the same. 'Dogs of War' & 'Heart of Darkness' are strong tuneful tracks that rock along quite nicely, while 'Cambodia Moon' is more desolate and desperate.

The B side features 'To the Battleground' which starts with distant gunfire and moves into a hypnotic, swirling synth & bass sound. The vocals are soft and atmospheric. Slowly acoustic guitars come in,then a military drum beat, harsher voice and then a heavy guitar riff turns this slow burner into a scorcher. This is the standout track after 'You're in the Army now'.

'Rendez-vous with Radiation' is the final track before the finale and deals with the nuclear threat of the day. A steady rocker that leads into 'Finale' which features more of the synthsized marimba and closes with a nuclear explosion. Listening to it now, this sounds a bit dramatic, but at the time was very pertinent.

A dark album, from the black cover to the black lyric sheet, through to the dark pessimistic lyrics. If it wasn't for the great tunes one could get seriously depressed to this album, but it rocks enough to prevent that.

Purists may say it's not an SA classic as the Bollands had left SA during their teens and the album was recorded in Holland, but hey, they were born in SA and spent their formative years there. I guess there's enough SA in their blood for us to call it ours.

LIESL GRAHAM BONUS TRACK

We have just bought Liesl Graham's 'Something To Believe', her first CD album and its great! We discovered (only because the CD player kept running) an extra song at the very far end of the others and its not listed on the cover!

Don't know the title but it starts "you and me together babe" and its just voice and guitar. Very good! It really should be listed.

YESTERDAYS BEST

Did you graunch your cherrie whilst shuffling to 'Cha-la-la, I Need You' by Dutch group the Shuffles? Been looking desperately for 'You' by German singer Peter Maffey? Have you always wanted 'Waikiki Man' by the Welsh-born, South African singer Jessica Jones but were too afraid to ask? And remember the movie "Kelly's Heroes" and that 'Burning Bridges' song by The Mike Curb Congregation? And 'The Morning After' by Maureen McGovern from "The Poseidon Adventure"?

Well, in the mid-90s that guru of SA pop compilers, Malcolm Lombard, compiled the 'Yesterdays Best' series of 3 CDs, featuring a mix of great South African and International pop and bubblegum songs from the 60s and 70s. South African artists include Jonathan Butler, Roy Bulkin, Richard Jon Smith, Bruce Millar, Four Jacks And A Jill, The Staccatos, Margaret Singana, Alan Garrity, Jessica Jones, Gwyneth Ashley-Robin and many others. On the International front we have Connie Francis, Tony Christie, Dave Edmunds, Sailor, 5000 Volts and The Wombles (yes, really).

All 3 CDs include extensive (and I mean "extensive") sleeve notes on each song and artist on these collections. So stop being a musical snob and order these CDs discreetly from One World. They will even send them in plain brown packages to protect your "musical" image!

If you are really not into this old nostalgia stuff, give the 2 'Showcase' 5FM SA compilations a listen. Great new SA music now -
I hope they will be remembered as fondly in 30 years time. (BC)

These and all other SA CDs are available from One World http://www.oneworld.co.za

REMEMBER THE 70s - THE SOUTH AFRICAN PERSPECTIVE

Here is my idea for an imaginary compilation with a similar theme to 'Yesterdays Best', but slightly more Rock orientated and including more late 70s songs. Most of the songs here did not bother the British or US chart compilers very much.

Charlie - Rabbitt
Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood - Santa Esmeralda
Dreams - Fleetwood Mac
Evening Over Rooftops - The Edgar Broughton Band
Free Me - Uriah Heep
Howzat! - Sherbert
I Like Dreaming - Kenny Nolan
I Ride Alone - Lee Clayton
I Wonder - Rodriguez
Jangelene - Golden Earring
Juke Box Hero - Foreigner
Just Another Poor Boy - Chris De Burgh
Lady - Styx
Lady In Black - Uriah Heep
Lifeline - Rabbitt
Locomotive Breath - Jethro Tull
Lord Of The Ages - Magna Carta
Love Hurts - Nazareth
Milky Ways - Columbus
More Than A Feeling - Boston
Radar Love - Golden Earring

Rock And Roll (I Gave You The Best Years Of My Life) - Kevin Johnson
Rock And Roll Lullaby - Waterloo
Science Fiction - Richard O'Brien
Simone - England Dan and John Ford Coley
Substitute - Clout
Sugar Man - Rodriguez
Summer Night City - Abba
The Ballad Of Casey Diess - Shawn Phillips

Nostalgia rules, OK?

THE ELECTRIC PRUNES

1965, Seattle, Washington, USA saw the formation of one of the most powerful Psychedelic groups to sign to Reprise Records. After the initial signing of the contract, the band moved to Los Angeles, California, namely James Lowe on harmonica and lead vocal, Mark Tulin on bass, Ken Williams on guitar, Preston Ritter on drums and Weasel Spagnola on guitar and vocals. The band started off poorly but by 1966 came forth with a powerful reverb single, 'I had to much to dream last night', which reached #11. Very much in answer to the Beatles 'I feel fine', the Electric Prunes overwhelm the reverb, be it voluntary or involuntary. The following year, 'Get me to the world on time', clocked in at #27 and Reprise saw the commercial future of Electric Prunes as promising. Unfortunately they underestimated the unique individualism of James Lowe who took his band across the waters to the UK in 1967. A brave move if one considers at the height of the Vietnam war, Audience from the continent were extremely negative towards American rock bands.

After successful concerts at the Marquis, Speakeasy and Cambridge the band moved across the waters to Stockholm, Sweden. The fresh psychedelic energy of Electric Prunes was infectious, but the Vietnam curse destroyed concerts in Amsterdam and Copenhagen. Two magnificent albums, 'I had to much to dream' and 'Underground' were released in 1966, but when their albums failed to show any commercial promise, the band folded. Brief charting of a single 'The great banana hoax' and a legal slip up of a single 'Onie' which would have definitely been a chart topper, robbed Lowe of the so sorely needed cash flow that Reprise needed.

Then came the strangeness and the charm of a beatnik by the name of David Axelrod who took over the band once all the former members had left. He released his 1968 album 'Mass in F Minor', a concept piece of music based on Catholic transposition and sung in Latin with electric fuzz to back it up. The track, 'Kyrie Eleison' was picked for the soundtrack, "Ballad of an easy rider", which gave a commercial boost to the second phase of the Electric Prunes thanks to the hip projection of Fonda and Hopper. The Electric Prunes leave us with a legacy of unchallenged psychedelic reverb which could only be rivalled by the Californian triumvirate The Misunderstood.

(U)SA MUSIC WEEK

It has been an awesome week for SA music! We have been celebrating SA Music Week on both KRVM and KWVA - to great effect! We've been receiving calls on all shows, in response to the music, and interest certainly has been growing. I've attached a list of the music that
has been played - most have been played several times in the total 10 hours that has been dedicated to South African music between Aug 28 and Sep 4. This all, naturally, bodes very well for the proposed SA Festival next year.

On that note, we are still looking for sponsorship. If you are aware of
anyone who is in a position to ofer financial assistance to the artists in the way of airfare, accomodation, getting equipment transported here, or any of the other myriad things that are going to get the artists here and performing in what could well be the cultural event of the millenium, please contact me. I will be sending out press releases shortly to all radio stations and other interested companies, and if anyone else would like a copy, please e-mail me.

The SA Festival e-mail is: mailto:safestival@hotmail.com
For general music correspondence, e-mail is: mailto:wimusic@hotmail.com
For those who would like to send music to be played, the postal address is:

To the artists, special thanks to all of you for making great music.
To the record companies: those listed have sent music to us and to whom we offer many grateful thanks for caring about your artists, and allowing us to introduce them to our listeners! The others were in the library anyway, or I brought them with me from SA - thanks to them, too.

JAMES Phillips

A couple of weeks ago Andrew Donaldson wrote a great tribute to James
Phillips in the Sunday Times. At the very end of the tribute he wrote that the two remaining albums (one is 'Live at Jamesons') would be released on CD. Does anyone know when this is going to happen and if so where we get copies of these two albums.

IS IT ART?

The reason I contacted you is to ask you the name and artist of a certain song. I have searched high and low but with no success. I am under the impression that the artist is South African, so I hope you can help me out. I don't know if you remember a TV series a while back called "Is it art?", well the theme song is the one I am interested in. The lyrics "ism or is it art" features a lot. It's not much to go on but I really hope you can help me.

Thanks a lot

Christiaan

{Ed: Capetonian Niki Daly is the artist... the song is available on CD on the 'Sharp Cuts Volume 1' compilation.}

GIVE ME THE GOOD NEWS

We have had numerous requests on where to find this classic Crocodile Harris song from 1982 on CD. There are 2 compilation CDs which have this track on them, but they are difficult to find.

Sharp Cuts volume 1 (Tusk, WOND 103)
Precious Moments volume 1 (Tusk, TIXD 400)

Good hunting...

---------------

TIMOTHY

At lunch today we had a bet on as to who first sang 'Timothy' was it Carike Keuzenkamp or 4 Jacks and a Jill?

Thanks

Barbara

{Ed: Four Jacks and A Jill reached #1 in November 1967 with this song. Carike's version, which is from the film "The Professor and The Beauty Queen" (in which Carike starred), reached #1 on the Springbok charts in December 1967, but I don't know who actually recorded it first... anyone else got any more info?}

VALERIE INNS

I was wondering if you could possibly assist me, I am trying to locate Valerie Inns, her brother (Roger Inns) sang in a band called Calders Collection in the late '60's. I have managed to ascertain that Clive Calder is in the production business. Would you have any means, whereby I may contact him, as he may possibly be in contact with, or know of someone who knows Roger, and then I could perhaps get in touch with Valerie. Many thanks for your kind assistance with the above. Even if you can point me in the right direction, would be most appreciated.
