THE 9th ANNUAL ARTS ALIVE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL

The 9th annual Arts Alive International Festival welcomes spring 2000
with a rich and varied programme. Musicians from Brazil, home grown
legends, wild and wacky street theatre performers, poets, artists and
dancers from all over the world will converge on the Johannesburg to
celebrate the arts during one of Africa's leading cultural events.

Arts Alive runs from 1 to 30 September 2000, bookings through Computicket.

Spotlight on: Busi Mhlongo

Singer, dancer, composer and Urban Zulu, Busi Mhlongo will perform at
the 9th annual Arts Alive International Festival in Johannesburg from 1
to 30 September 2000.

With her critically acclaimed, chart-topping CD, 'Urban Zulu', Mhlongo
embraces her Zulu roots, but her expressive style of singing and the
unique way she fuses traditional rhythms and the latest technology
creates a Zulu album with global relevance. She draws on various South
African styles such as mbaqanga, maskanda and marabi and beautifully combines it with contemporary elements such as jazz, funk, rock, gospel, rap and West African sounds to form music that defies categorisation. 'Urban Zulu' occupied the number one position for 8 weeks on the World Charts. "This is Busi Mhlongo, authentically Zulu and South African with a new sound that will find a home in a hostel as easily as it will on a dance floor in Yeoville or London," Bongani Madondo, Mail and Guardian, 1999.

Busi Mhlongo performs with Brazilian Samba Queen, Beth Carvalho on 22
September at Mega Music Warehouse. Tickets cost R100. Book at
Computicket or at the door.

AWESOME AFRICA MUSIC FESTIVAL
A LIVING TREASURES AFRICA PROJECT
CULTURE---COMMUNITY---ENVIRONMENT

Shongweni Resources Reserve, KZN
22 - 25 September 2000

"A multi-dimensional, international celebration of music, art, dance and theatre in a glorious natural environment. It will excite, inform and promote our cultures and natural heritage to the world."

This year's festival follows on from the glorious, innovative and successful first Festival of Living Treasures: Shongweni - dubbed "Africa's Greatest Music Festival" held as part of the millennium celebrations in Durban last year. The organisers are hosting a second similar event over the heritage day weekend this year to be entitled The Awesome Africa Music Festival.

The Living Treasures concept has been broadened to include a whole
sustainable lifestyles philosophy and includes key satellite cultural events that hold a significant place in the Zulu cultural calendar and fit firmly into The Living Treasures ethos.

These are The KwaXimba African Cultural Festival on 7 and 8 October with its special preview, the Isithumba Cultural Festival on 25 September that will take place at Isithumba in the Valley of 1000 Hills. At the Isithumba Festival in September, many of the international musicians featured at Shongweni will be special guests. The Reed Dance also falls under the Living Treasures umbrella and is held on 8, 9, 10 September at Enyokeni, the Royal Palace in kwa-Nongoma, the seat of the Zulu monarch.

The Shongweni music festival will become known as the Awesome Africa Music Celebration and spearheads the Living Treasures concept. Musicians from our country and beyond will once again descend on the pristine nature reserve in the Shongweni Valley to create a long-weekend of magical innovative music. Sublime percussionist and organiser-with-a-vision, Dan Chiorboli, is responsible for the festival's artistic content. He has worked hard to ensure that this year's programme is supremely exciting, boundary-breaking, innovative and appropriate to the Living Treasures ethos.

Among the performers to look out for this year are global pop diva Angelique Kidjo who links African traditional rhythms to catchy pop songs; the exotic Cheikh Lo from Senegal; Samite from Uganda who performs a range of music from Central Africa, and acclaimed masters of the 24-stringed Hindustani slide guitar, Debashish and Subashish Bhattacharaya from India.

From closer to home the line-up includes respected legends Hugh Masekela and Busi Mhlongo. It also sees the reunion of veteran SA rock greats The Flames featuring Blondie Chaplin, Ricky and Steve Fataar, super-guitarist Jimmy Dludlu and a session of moonlit African Renassiance Poetry led by Prof Pitika Ntuli.

There will be a special tribute to KZN musical legends with Mayor Obed
Mlaba's Musical Excellence Awards which will feature the likes of Blondie Chaplin, Ricky Fataar, Steve Fataar, Sipho Gumede, Roger Lucey, Madala Kunene, Vusi Ximba and Neill Solomon.

FLAMES RE-UNION
(featuring Blondie Chaplin, Ricky & Steve Fataar)

A nostalgic homecoming for Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar for the Mayor's Awards mean that by popular demand a Flames reunion is inevitable. Not a year goes by without their vast legion of fans across South Africa demanding to see the remaining Flames together on one stage again - and the time has arrived! Blondie's recent work with The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones and Ricky's with Bonnie Raitt, John Hiatt and a host of others have ensured them legendary status in their home town.

JUST ANOTHER BAND - OFF THE EDGE (June 2000, Independent)
New review from European music magazine, Rock Report

Off The Edge is a female fronted AOR/ Melodic Rock band from South Africa, who recently released their third album 'Just Another Band'.
I have to admit that I had never heard of the band before, but after I had listened to this new album, I'm sure to check out the elder work. The band started in the early eighties and after a couple of line-up changes, it now holds Judy Marshall-Schutte on vocals, Peter Hanmer on guitars and keyboards and Tony Groenewald on bass and piano. This threesome knows how to write and play lovely melodic rock songs, which remind me of bands & artists like Witness, Venus & Mars, Heart, Alyson Avenue, Tone Norum, Danté Fox and that other great South African band Little Sister.

The album starts off with a couple of party sounds and continues with the beautiful melodic sometimes light progressive instrumental 'Addiction'. With 'Do You Believe' you can for the first time enjoy the crystal clear voice of Judy Marshall and after those two songs you will realise that you have another winner in your player. Great choruses and beautiful melodies are all over the album and if I had to pick out some favourites, I would choose the acoustic driven ballad 'In My Heart', which gives you goosebumps, brilliant!

The straight in your face rocker 'Face In The Crowd', the super semi-ballad 'St. Aidans', which combines AOR with pomp-rock influences and all of the instrumentals are very good tracks. But be aware of the fact that the other not mentioned songs still are more than worth checkin' out!

3.ON STAGE
------------

STEVE HOFMEYR

Friday night 25 August I went to watch "Beautiful Noise", Steve Hofmeyr's tribute to Neil Diamond, at the Bellville Civic Centre.

What a show! His stage performance was electric as usual and the decor spectacular. He really went to a lot of trouble to recreate the atmosphere of the great legend. Besides that, Steve's voice is very similar to that of Neil's and I think this also contributed to the success of the show.

Steve launched a CD called 'Beautiful Noise' (EMI) in conjunction with the tour and I bought a copy. After I listened to a few tracks I was however a bit disappointed. The CD sounds very flat and the mixture of instruments are poor. Every track sounds the same and there is a lack of excitement in the music. Maybe I'm too critical but I think the producer could have done better to enhance the Neil Diamond feel to the CD. There is an absence of traditional instruments and too much synthesization which actually makes some of the tracks sound cheap. Come on guys you could have done better than this!

To wrap up: go and watch the show, it's great family entertainment, and
with all the young Hofmeyr fans that come to see their idol he really
succeeds in promoting older music to the younger generation. But don't
expect too much of the CD.

Rgds

SOMETHING TO BELIEVE - LIESL GRAHAM (GALLO, GWVCD 26)

It’s been a while since South Africa has had her own female pop star - someone along the lines of Sheryl, Alanis or Joan. Liesl Graham is poised to take on that role. Signed to Gallo Music South Africa more than 18 months ago, she is the product of extensive development, having worked with various producers to help her develop her sound and songwriting skills. The result is 'Something To Believe'.

Growing up in South Africa with its turbulent political climate, as well as having an educational background in the human sciences, has greatly influenced Liesl Graham’s songwriting. She uses her music as a vehicle of expression, to speak her mind about anything and everything she feels strongly about.

Liesl’s lyrics are intense and probing. They lean towards issues of social consciousness and her natural flair for melodic songwriting combines with this to create what her management and record company think of as the "new South African sound." Liesl’s material and vision have already attracted some of South Africa’s best musicians to her project. Her album and live band make use of the talents of players from bands such as Johnny Clegg and Juluka, Wendy Oldfield, Ella Mental and more...

Liesl grew up listening to a diverse range of music including anything from Nat King Cole to Skunk Anansie. Her original material is an eclectic mix of folk, contemporary, rock and other styles, influenced by the works of artists such as Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette, Sarah McLachlan and others. Her debut album is being produced by Adrian Levi, one of South Africa’s music luminaries with a history of hits behind him. His production techniques lend a raw edge to Liesl’s already unique sound and the material ranges from issues of racial discrimination to the selling short of spirituality.

Her debut 10-track album, 'Something To Believe' is out now with the single 'All Roads' getting great airplay across the country. With heart-felt lyrics on these self-penned compositions, Liesl is set to be one of the hottest new young performers in South Africa. She recently blew audiences away at the Oppikoppi music festival and is currently performing in the PWV area.

FALLEN THROUGH THE CRACKS - THE TIM WELLS BAND (INDEPENDENT)

Recorded last year and independently released by Tim himself, this album is a pleasure to listen to. The CD starts off quite quiet, laid-back and melodic with some Kwela influences, works its way through some stunning melodic pop/rock like 'Say' (great female vocals from Karen van Pletsen) onto the rock reggae sound of 'Path You Take' (watch out, Lucky Dube) and then let's rip with the title track and 'Tear A Piece' that Jack Hammer or Metallica would be proud of. Guest musicians include Nibs van der Spuy, Dave Birch, Syd Kitchen and Chris Lechter. Recommended. (BC)

SHARP CUTS VOLUME 1 - South African Pop 1976-1990

These are good times to be a fan of South African rock music. The
present scene sounds creative and lively, and the reissue prospects for the next few months are promising. A number of the reissues promised for the near future are of artists who have hits on the 'Sharp Cuts' series, and a review of the first 'Sharp Cuts' CD follows immediately.

When I first heard this CD, about a year ago, the songs had extra
impact because I had read fond reminiscences of them over and over on the Internet. Hearing them was like finally meeting someone about whom a friend had been telling me.

There are 20 tracks to this disc. Here are some comments on many of
them:

Who couldn't enjoy 'Dance Sum More' by Mango Groove? The perfect
opener for this CD.

'Shadows' by éVoid is a dramatic song. I've asked One World to let me
know when the promised reissue is available.

Regarding 'Johnny Calls the Chemist', I am crazy about Falling Mirror. Check out some officially unreleased Mirror MP3s in the SA Rock Files over at: http://www.rock.co.za/files/falling_hammer.html

Little Sister's classic 'Dear Abby (One Night of Passion)' is included.
Heartfelt and honest songwriting.

People speak of Baxtop with great admiration, but all I know of them is
'Jo Bangles' -- a fine song. I need to hear more to understand better.

'Is It an Ism or is it Art' (Niki Daly) is intellectually cute -- pop for the glitterati?

What a voice Lesley Rae Dowling has on 'The Spaniard'! A song strong
on dramatic sense.

I've mentioned before that it was while listening to 'Mysteries and
Jealousies' by The Helicopters that I could imagine in some small degree the frustration South African musicians must feel, because here is a perfectly hit-worthy song in all ways, but a song that was not picked up and allowed to sell itself as a hit. I've been listening to Bernard Binns' (once of The Helicopters) fascinating new CD, 'Physiognomy of the Soul' during the past few days and am pleased that he is still creating. It's a fascinating album that I hope to tell y'all about sometime soon.

National Wake's 'International News' -- Anarchy in the RSA. Driving
punk and social commentary -- change the names and it could be about the news anywhere in the world.

{Some lyrics from this track recorded in 1981: "they send the troops into Angola... they send the choppers over the border". Another angry song about the Border War, like Piet Botha's 'Goeie Nag Generaal'. - ed}

Robin Auld has a personal way with a melody. 'Old Hand' is a gentle
tune, a song hopeful, yet somewhat world-weary in tone. Sounds like a bit of melancholy after the party guests have all gone home. I like his music, in fact, this morning I woke up with his 'Baby, You Been Good to Me' playing in my mind.

'Blue Beat' by The Insisters is a swanky, skanky strut -- one of the 4
or 5 overt dance songs on the 'Sharp Cuts #1'.

'Give Me the Good News' -- Crocodile Harris's voice is sincere, almost
plaintive. This song is an impassioned appeal for peace, tolerance, and
understanding. I'm with you, uh, Crocodile!

'He Took Off My Romeos (She Took Off My Romeos)' -- Anneline Kriel.
What is this novelty tune about? There is a seductive tone in the
suggestive lyrics -- if my imagination is touching on the same subject
Anneline Kriel seems to be suggesting. Seems to have been a song South
Africans loved to disparage.

The 'Best of SA Pop' series is strong on pop of the 60s and 70s. This series is strong on the 80s. If there is any current series that carries the idea of displaying the best of SA radio songs it must be the burgeoning 5FM 'Showcase' CDs.

And my 'Sharp Cuts' CD case has a cool South African flag sticker that
says, 'Buy South African Music'. I agree, and one of the first CDs I bought a year ago was this one, 'Sharp Cuts #1'.

6.CLASSIC ROCK

WORK IT OUT - BAXTOP

A short introduction that could easily have dripped from Chic's Nile Rodger's guitar then BAM! you're into the slickest, funkiest piece of music ever to emanate from the tip of Africa, or most places on the globe, for that matter. With it's wicked bass line, tight production and outstanding vocals, 'Jo Bangles' is a track designed to be played loud. When I first heard this, I was stunned and completely hooked and nearly wore out the tape playing this track.

After this, the album mellows out, but never loses it's sheen. Larry Amos' vocals are unequalled by any South African male artist I have heard. Soul, blues and rock flow from his vocal cords with ease.

Then there's the guitar work. They can do funk (Jo Bangles), blues (Foxey), rock, (Golden Highway), country (Take me into your heart), Eric Clapton (Dr Watson), George Benson (Dr Watson again). It all seems to flow. These guys are masters of their instruments.

'Dr Watson' is an epic track, starting out with a soulful sound that could have been included on Marvin Gaye's classic 'What's Going On', gets rockier, slides back to soul then features a brilliant George Benson-esque scat/ guitar section before finally easing back into Marvin mode.

'Golden Highway' has a 'Born to be Wild' feel to it with a great guitar work out and really rocks along. While 'Foxey' is a Clapton-esque laid back blues number. 'Night Time' continues in the same vein and could have come off Clapton's 'Unplugged' album. 'Train' features a harmonica solo Stevie Wonder would have been proud of and rock 'n roll is the name of the game here. 'Song with No Name' is an instrumental that is bluesey and funky. The extra tracks on the CD 'Jody Babe' and 'Just Turned 20' are hardcore funk numbers reminiscent of Sly & the Family Stone.

I have made a lot of comparisons in this review, but as you will notice they are all to legends. This album is the slickest, chic-est funksoulblues album I've ever heard. A truly spectacular offering and I think that any of the artists mentioned above would have been proud to work with this talented bunch of guys had they even had the privilege to hear them. Highly recommended.

RUBBABAND

The original South African garage band -- I was a 20 year old from Scotland on holiday in SA when I met up with Ramsay Mackay who was sharing a cottage in Sandton with a couple of mates of mine Richard Coates and Kenny Saint (both now dead). I moved in to the cottage
(party central in Sandton, in 5th Street, opposite Sandton City) and began to play lead guitar. Ramsay Mackay was a great inspiration and a fantastic nutcase to boot. We rehearsed in our garage, perfecting our "own" music (all songs nicked from Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top, because nobody in SA had heard of them yet!).

Many musos popped in when they could hear the racket from Sandton City, including the likes of Julian Laxton, Colin Pratley, Brian Davidson, Trevor Rabin, etc. We formed a band to play at my 21st birthday party and called it "Rubbaband" (dreadful name!) which included Kenny Saint
(vocals), David Flockhart (lead guitar), John Hawkrigg (bass, also with Julian Laxton Band), Calvin Malherbe (drums) and what a garage party.
700 people and broken up by the police with dogs, but great music including Julian Laxton guesting on guitar.

Dave (Ornellas) the singer from Hawk invited us to play at The Sunset Festival in Pretoria which we did to thousands of people (we were pretty awful, but the crowd seemed to like us enough. We played a few more gigs and rehearsed in Sandton, whilst I taught guitar at Musicland in Sandton City. A young guy who was just starting to play guitar called Tim Parr, used to come and sit and listen and try to nick my licks. He brought along a pal called Larry Amos, boy could he sing - Tim went off to the army and Larry Amos joined us as lead singer in Rubbaband, Larry was so talented but never turned up for rehearsals and then I decided to come back to London to play a bit with David O'List from The Nice and Roxy Music. The next thing I heard was that Larry and Tim had developed the band into Baxtop and that they had done reasonably well. I am still playing on and off and have a successful marketing and PR company in Covent Garden, London.

I would like know more about the whereabouts of the following musos - Tim Parr, Calvin Malherbe, Dave (Ornellas) from Hawk, Johnny Fourie, Ronnie Robot, Colin Pratley, and Larry Amos. And also the whereabouts of Norman Catherine, an excellent artist of the time, who used to collaborate with Ramsey Mackay on books.

Cheers

ROGER DEAN

{Roger Dean is famous for his album covers for Yes, Uriah Heep, Asia, Budgie and many others. He also painted the fold-out cover picture for the 'Space Hymns' album by obscure 70's prog-rocker Ramases - ed}

I was at Canterbury College of Art with Roger (Dean) in the 1960s. We both came from Dover and commuted on the same train and went to the same rather wild art student parties. We always called him "Dixie" rather than Roger. He was an extremely amiable and pleasant young guy, very popular, with a cheerful disposition. Like you I am very pleased that he has been so successful. I also think your art is very exciting and unique and the idea of a combined Dean and Currin website is a very clever and enjoyable one.

All good wishes,

Sylvia Shepherd

SOUTH AFRICAN ROCK

I don't know whether you have ever had a poll on the best South African rock band, but I would be very interested to find out what other subscribers think. For the record my choice would be:
1) The Flames
2) Freedoms Children
3) Otis Waygood
4) Mango Groove
5) Abstract Truth
6) Omega Limited
7) Museum
8) Suck
9) Blues Broers
10) Hawk

I have managed to see all these bands (except The Flames) live and found them all brilliant. In fact I remember hitching up to Jo'burg from Bloemfontein in my school uniform with 5 friends to go to the Milner Park Pop Festival and seeing the majority of these bands in 1969 (if my memory serves me well). This was the festival that the Potch or RAU students cut some of the so called hippies hair off.

As far as your Ramases webpage goes, yes I do remember them very well. I managed to play my copy to death and am still searching to find the first album on CD. I used to work in a record bar in Bloemfontein every now and again and at this time and 'Life Child' and Richie Havens version of 'Here Comes The Sun' were definitely the most popular songs at time.

Alan Mitchell

LOOKING FOR CDs

I'm still on a quest to replace my ex-vinyl collection with music CD's. I was lucky to get 'Space Hymns' by Ramases on the German Repertoire label. Since you seem to have links to music that I like here are some albums I haven't found on CD yet:

COCKNEY REBEL - THE PSYCHOMODO
KINGDOM COME (Arthur Brown) - JOURNEY
ROAD (Noel Redding) - ROAD

South African:
RABBITT - original 2 albums
éVOID
SUCK - TIME TO SUCK

I wish I had kept the vinyl and recorded it!
