WILDEBEEST

The original 'Bushrock 1' album by Wildebeest featuring Piet Botha, Boet Farber, Dave Tarr, Karlien van Niekerk and Colin Pratley (the drummer from Freedoms Children) has been remastered (from vinyl as the masters were lost) and re-issued on CD.

Dave Malherbe wrote:
"'Bushrock 1' was recorded live at Upstairs (Sunnyside, Pretoria) on 28 February and 1 March 1981. One tends to forget the great sounds Wildebeest produced with the interaction between the frenetic violin of Dave Tarr and driving lead guitar of Boet Faber. I couldn't believe that I had forgotten that 'Bushrock 1' features 'Slowly Towards The North' (as 'Pofadder'), 'The Kid He Came From Nazareth' (as 'Russian and Chips') and 'Tribal Fence'."

'Bushrock 1' is released by Pofadder Productions and licenced to Wildebeest records.

SA MUSIC WEEK 2000 (August 28 to September 2)

"The education and training programmes fulfil an important aspect of
South African Music Week," says Rosie Katz "It is vital for us to take all the knowledge we have regarding the music industry and pass it on to the next generation of aspirant musicians, technicians, producers, managers, agents, and other industry practitioners. This way our relatively fledgling industry will blossom into a world giant."

Confident words from one of the prime motivators and driving forces
behind both last and this year’s events (and the recently released,
updated version of the South African Music Industry Directory 2000). But an overwhelming amount of support is needed from all sectors of the
music industry to help achieve Rosie Katz’s and many other people’s aims and dreams. Anyone wishing to get involved on any level with the SA Music Week 2000 can do so by contacting:

EDGARS 5FM 25th BIRTHDAY CONCERT

The last time South Africa was host to a birthday celebration of this
magnitude was in 1996 when 5FM celebrated their 21st birthday in front of 45 000 screaming music fanatics at Kyalami Race Track. Now, four years later and turning an equally momentous 25, the nation’s most happening radio station is celebrating in an even more extravagant way. On Saturday October 28, 5FM once again takes control of Kyalami Race Track for the Edgars 5FM 25th Birthday Concert, inviting some of the world’s top artists to share the stage with our own in an unforgettable display of celebratory music.

This year, 5FM - together with new sponsor, Edgars - once again plan on
staging a collection of top international acts for their birthday
celebration. But, as Anthony Duke explains, the acts chosen to perform
alongside our country’s best will be the ones who dominate the 5FM music charts and are therefore the artists that 5FM listeners would most want to see live. Edgars involvement in this year’s all-day music and fun festival brings a new and exciting element to the concert.

"Our association with 5FM is an obvious one," says Jon Spotts, Chief
Marketing Officer for Edgars. "Edgars is the store of first choice for
clothing among 5FM listeners as we offer the latest branded fashion,
from Tommy Hilfiger fragrances to Levi jeans as well as our own
successful youth ranges in J Exchange and Free. Music plays a major role in the lifestyle of the 5FM listener and the Edgars customer. It is a pleasure for Edgars to team with 5FM to stage this celebratory musical feast."

Also showing their support for the Edgars 5FM 25th Birthday
Concert as one of Edgars’ major cellular suppliers is Philips Consumer
Communications, who will offer the public their exciting new range of
cellular products and accessories. They will also have a stand at the
event where they will be exhibiting the latest Philips cellular
technology.

Stay tuned to 5FM for further details. Visit http://www.5net.co.za for

3.ON STAGE

OPPIKOPPI
http://www.oppikoppi.co.za

OppiKoppi OppiBBC

The recent OppiKoppi SA music festival in Northam was given a glowing
insert at the tail end of a BBC news half-hour on DSTV this
weekend. The British TV cameras moved from an aerial vantage view of the sprawling Bushveld layout to a series of mixed shots of the crowd and performers. The complimentary narration that accompanied these pictures spoke generally about the positive role music has played in the development and upliftment of the Rainbow Nation, and specifically about certain of these musicians and their music.

Moses Molelekwa was seen performing with his band and later gave a short but enthusiastic interview. Various other artists were also glimpsed in concert including Ashton Nyte, Valiant Swart and Waddy Jones. The insert ended with 5FM DJ Barney Simon introducing an act from the stage and then speaking to the cameras about SA music while crouched by a campfire. Simon (as always) spoke positively about the music he has worked so hard to support and promote, and suggested that South African musicians, particularly those of the Rock persuasion, should strive harder to allow their music and lyrics to reflect and discuss the realities of their lives in (South) Africa, citing the Sex Pistols as an example of how this can be relevant and effective.

Although the insert was relatively short (and I was unable to tape it
for future reference or clarification), it still managed to convey a
very positive image of the diversity and potential of SA music,
something which can only be of benefit to the industry, and
organizations like Amabala who are attempting to establish SA music on
the British musical landscape. It all helps. (SS)

4.NEW RELEASES

RECONSTRUCTING ALICE - SONJA HERHOLDT (Universal)

Fans of Sonja's music over the last 25 years will be stunned, amazed and very possibly shocked by this new album of English and Afrikaans pop, rock and dance songs. Those of you, like me, who found the saccharin-sweet Afrikaans pop of her 1975 hit 'Ek Verlang Na Jou' difficult to really enjoy, will also be stunned, shocked and amazed! Yes, really.

This is an album of powerful, epic and atmospheric songs of lost love and bittersweet memories. 10 new original tracks written by Carel Cronjé and Cornell Boshoff (introduced to Sonja by Theunis Engelbrecht) plus new dance mixes of Anton Goosen's 'Trein na Matjiesfontein' and Jan de Wet's 'Ek Verlang Na Jou'. There is also an instrumental track listed on the cover as '(Not listed) Hidden track'... just to make sure we find it, I guess.

The industrial, synth-driven dance sounds of 'Winkelpoppe' (Mannequins) must be the furthest Sonja has ever been from 'Tant Mossie se Sakkie Sakkie Boeredans'. No kidding!

'What Do I Do Now?' is a powerful song about a marriage falling apart with incisive lyrics and an incredible production. Fans of the Jim Steinman school of production (Meatloaf, Bonnie Tyler) will love this track. Anybody who has ever had a marriage or relationship fall apart or is maybe in such a situation right now, will realise they are not alone.

Sonja says: "After 25 years in the business, I needed to do this album - I needed to communicate on a personal, even intimate level. It's a clear reflection of where I come from, where I am and where I'm going. More importantly it says who I am."

"...hear me screaming, body steaming, wanting you..."
This is Sonja Herholdt? Yes, it is. Let this album captivate you.

"Reconstructing Alice" indeed... highly recommended. (BC)

THE INSIDE STORY OF 'RECONTRUCTING ALICE'
Theunis Engelbrecht, reprinted from Digest issue #57, 14 May 2000

The Sonja story is quite weird and way-out and full of co-incidences and synchronicity. When I was 10 years old and in standard two, Sonja debuted with 'Ek verlang na jou'. That was 1975. I was in love with her. I bought all her albums, but stopped after the 5th one and after Anton Goosen did not write for her anymore and she went into gospel and I totally lost interest, because in std 6 I discovered Rodriguez and in std 7, Patti Smith and the Sex Pistols.

Two years ago De Kat magazine asked me to do an interview with Sonja after Anton and she worked together for the first time in 18 years again. Soon after that Sonja approached me and asked me if I will help to put a cabaret together for her, because she wanted to do something new. I told her Die Naaimasjiene covered 'Ek verlang na jou' and I played it to her. She then wanted to take the CD home to listen to it. I said, "no, Sonja, you will be shocked". She insisted, however, and a week later she phoned me back and told me the CD "opened up my head" and that she wanted to cover one of the other Naaimasjiene songs
('Sê 'n gebed').

Okay, so I got the guys of die Naaimasjiene and Spiral Staircase together, we had meetings, and put a show together for her. I told the guys the most important thing to do was to break down all stereotypes and perceptions about Sonja. They started writing the music, and now a year later, we're in the process of recording a whole album with her. It's called 'Reconstructing Alice' and it will be released on 22 July by Universal.

I HAD TOO MUCH TO DREAM LAST NIGHT - RENE HUNTER

René Hunter is the talented, attractive and very feisty new young singer on the David Gresham Label. Her self-titled debut album came out earlier this year and impressed many with its broad range of styles, from dance and radio singles to her Africanised version of Garth Brooks’ 'The River'. Certain of those songs achieved reasonable airplay, but here comes René's new single (which was not on the album) called ‘I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night’. This is an original song and not a cover of the classic ‘60’s track by The Electric Prunes.

What seems obvious, from her new look and sound, is that DGR have
decided to pitch her into the Britney Spears/ Christine Aguilera
slipstream, and the song is written and performed in that specific
style. While not my cup of biltong at all, I did play it to some young
female pop fans (OK, my daughters) who both liked it immediately and
gave it a big thumbs up. If this single does the business on the SA
radio and charts, it will certainly send many fans back to that debut
album, and they won’t be disappointed. (SS)

WHILE NO ONE WAS LOOKING - LITTLE SISTER (GALLO)

Little Sister, the Lonmon sisters and their friends, typify what I have
come to associate with South African musicians: they are experienced, they know what pleases an audience, they are confident, and, like so many other SA bands, the Sisters are utter professionals. Their smooth sound is inspiring.

I was familiar with many of these tunes before acquiring 'While No One Was Looking' by virtue of having heard them over at their web site
(http://www.rock.co.za/littlesister). It's a friendly site, and airing the music as it does made me decide that I did want to acquire their music -- they're not giving it away, they're advertising, and it worked: after I heard their songs, I wanted more.

By the way, sidemen aren't credited in the liner notes of this CD, but
they are in the respective albums these songs come from, and on their website.

Little Sister's songs are clever in that they are intelligent rock songs yet are deceptively easy to listen to. The hooks are not obvious, but thoroughly catchy nonetheless. There is an urgency, an aggressiveness if you will, to many of the lyrics that raise these songs above pop or easy listening and into the realm of mature singing, mature songwriting, and talented rock. The clever, thoughtful lyrics engage one's attention the way rock should.

Here's where I admit ignorance on two topics and yet come to a real
conclusion, with an unrelated example to support my contention. I don't know how many gigs Little Sister plays a year, but they seem to
undertake a healthy number of tours. I don't know how many shows a huge
current world-success band plays annually, but I'll bet it's far fewer gigs than Little Sister plays. My conclusion is the playing Little Sister does accounts in part for their confident and professional sound. To back this up, boxers of yore used to fight more often that a modern toothless wonder like Spinks. Spinks boxes once or twice a year, while old-time fighters fought every weekend. The old time boxers learned moves, combos, endurance, and skills unknown to modern sluggers. My conclusion of this thread: Little Sister has talent and experience, that makes them a wonderfully tight and smooth and professional band -- I urge them to keep slugging away!

Here are my takes on a handful of the songs, though each and every one of the 15 tracks is a winner -- truly a Best of collection:

'You Bring Out the Best In Me' -- Two versions are on this disc, the
first and last tracks. The second, extended, version seems more intimate, even with the added guitar, but both performances are lovely love songs.

'Dear Abbie' -- So sincere and honest a song, replete with passionate
despair, excellent musicianship and singing, and fine songwriting.

'Peace On Earth' -- An optimistic anthem suggesting we keep on aspiring.

'No Man Shall Fall' -- Elegiac and beautiful, soaring singing and guitar work, a song about awareness of wrongs done and a new leaf turning.

'Love Is a Weapon' -- Ain't it sometimes though? Rocker with an honest
hook.

'That's Just the Way It Is' -- a nice straight-ahead thumping bass guitar and a bit of a bopping shimmy going on here.

'Little Sister' -- Crank it up! Aggressive adult lyrical content, too. Based on this tune, I think my next Little Sister album will be 'Ready and Willing'. It contains two versions, one with extra guitar, apparently.

The songs above, and the otherwise excellent ones unmentioned, make a
nice ebb and flow through the album. The tempo will slow a little, then in roars a song to fill the dance floor. Good pacing of these cuts.

I've read comparisons between Little Sister and Heart, but frankly, I
don't hear any more Heart (as in Ann and Nancy Wilson) in these songs than might be coincidental by virtue of two female voices, sisters no less, in a guitar-and vocals-oriented rock band. I hear Debbi and Jenni Lonmon. Not much Heart, but lots of heart -- and a fair amount of rocking blue-eyed (make that brown-eyed) soul. Little Sister is not a girl group, but an original-sounding rock band with a pair of female lead singers.

At times I feel dismay that my wish list of SA rock is so long, but then there is another side that cheers me up. After enjoying this CD so much, I am glad I have four more Little Sister CDs to buy from One World. And, to brag, I have the special autographed edition -- if you hurry, One World might still have in stock some CDs that Jenni and Debbi have signed.

6.CLASSIC SA ROCK
-----------------

SPOTLIGHT ON JOHN KONGOS

John Kongos was born in Johannesburg in 1946 and grew up in Brakpan where his mother owned a nightclub called The Fireplace. When he was 12 he attended one of Tommy Steele's South African shows and was inspired to go into the Rock 'n Roll business. At age 15 he fronted The Dukes taking further inspiration from Hank Marvin of the Shadows. They performed at The Fireplace and were eventually signed to a small local label and had a few local hits with covers of familiar pop songs.

The group changed their name to the G-Men and and in 1963 were banned from appearing at the Rand Show as were deemed to attract "too large a crowd". In the same year Kongos made his first trip to the UK. Although trying out for a couple of major labels he did not have much sucess and returned to South Africa.

Through his connections with Pye Record's South African distributors, Teal, he had an "in" with Pye and returned to the UK in 1966 and recorded 'I Love Mary'/ 'Goodtime Party Companion' on Pye's subsidiary label Piccadilly. He then hit the road touring with a group called Scrugg which consisted of a number of the G-Men and some British musicians. The group also recorded a few singles which received a fair share of airplay, but did not yield any chart success. The group disbanded in 1968 and Kongos went solo.

In 1969 'Won't you Join Me' was recorded by Dahlia Lavi and was a huge hit in Europe (topping the West German charts). He released his first solo album 'Confusions About Goldfish' in that same year on Pye's Dawn label which despite being one of the first Dawn albums to make money did not make an impression in the charts. He had a studio installed into the basement of his home at about this time.

In 1970 one of his demos attracted the attention of Gus Dudgeon who was busy producing Elton John's material at the time. The demo tape was over dubbed by the Trident Studio's house band which also formed the nucleus of Elton John's band. From these sessions came 'He's going to step on you again'. Released on Fly records, this song spent 14 weeks on the UK charts and reached number 4. It also reached number 70 in the US and number 2 on the South African charts. 'Tokoloshe Man' was released the following year and this spent 11 weeks on the UK charts and reached number 4 (#13 on the SA Charts).

The album 'Kongos' was released in December 1971 and spent 2 weeks on the UK album charts peaking at number 29. 'Great White Lady' was prepared as the follow up single but was never relased, possibly because Fly records was busy changing into Cube Records and the the single was lost in the "administrative chaos".

He released 'Higher than God's Hat' in 1973 and 'Ride the Lightning' in 1975, a cover version of the latter by Sylvie Vartan topped the Frech charts for 6 weeks and remains one of France's biggest selling singles of all time.

Despite not releasing much further material, he has played guitar on tracks by Mike D'Abo and Ralph McTell and contributed the Fairlight programming on Def Leppard's 'Pyromania'. (Apparently he mananged to lay his hands on the 3rd Fairlight which came to the UK). He also wrote the theme music to 'The Greek Tycoon' starring Anthony Quinn and has written the theme music for a number of TV programmes.

Gary Glitter has admitted that the sound and atmosphere of his hit 'Rock & Roll pt 2' was inspired by Kongos' work and similarities have been drawn between his 2 hits singles and Fleetwood Mac's later album 'Tusk'. More recently The Happy Mondays have covered both of these, 'He's going to step on you again' being recorded as 'Step on' and included on their seminal 90's album 'Pills 'n Thrills and Bellyaches' while 'Tokoloshe Man' was included on Elektra's 40th anniverary album 'Rubiayat'.

John Kongos is working on the harmonic relationships between sounds, shapes, colours and number patterns. He is hoping to compose a computerised classical piece. "This is an extension of the concepts of Joseph Schiller, a Russian American composer (1895 - 1943)"

The above is a summary of the sleeve notes from 'Tokoloshe Man Plus Five' with some quotes from "History of Contemporary Music of South Africa" by Garth Chilvers and Tom Jasiukowicz (TOGA, 1994).

The singles released by Scrugg are valued at between £25 and £40 by Record Collector's Rare Record Price Guide 2000. These values would be for records in mint condition.

---------

TOKOLOSHE MAN PLUS

'Tokoloshe Man Plus' is John Kongos' 1971 album 'Kongos' with 5 additional tracks being his next 3 singles and the b-sides of the 2 singles taken from the album. The 2 singles, 'Tokoloshe Man' and 'He's gonna step on you again' are brilliant pop rock tracks that thunder along with great guitar riffs and tribal drums. It's not hard to see why they made the top 10 in the UK {both made UK #4 in 1971 - ed}. These are songs created to be played loud. (It is interesting to hear a South African singing "it makes no difference if you're black or if you're white" (from 'Tokoloshe Man'), especially back in the 70's.)

Outside of these 2 great songs, the mood of the album is generally quieter and at times melancholic, but no less melodic. 'Tomorrow I'll Go' is a stunningly beautiful song. This is pure pop genius and is one of modern music's hidden gems. (Similar to the Beach Boys' 'Forever' on their 'Sunflower' album, if you've ever heard that). If you fail to be moved by this, then you're probably dead.

Kongos adapts well to any style that he tries his hand at on this album, from the rock of 'Tokoloshe Man', through the Gospel Choir sound of 'Come on down, Jesus' to the Country Rock of 'Sometimes it's not enough' with it's guitar riff that could have been lifted from any Cowboy Movie soundtrack. The final track 'Ride the Lightning' is one of those hard to classify songs with it's mandolin and tango-type beat, but is a catchy tune that leaves you humming it long after the CD is finished.

Similarities can be drawn with Elton John circa 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' and that's not too surprising as the album is produced by Gus Dudgeon who also produced 'Yellow Brick', but Kongos manages to stamp his distinct mark on the album. There are also hints of the Beatles influence, in particular the Hey Jude-ish "la-la-la" bit.

He has a great, versatile voice that at times sounds like a cross between Noddy Holder of Slade and John Lennon on the Beatles 'Twist and Shout', but also handles the slower tunes with a mature smoothness.

This album by this child prodigy is well worth having. It sounds as good today as when it was made and I'm happy to say for once that it is available on CD from http://www.amazon.com.

LET THE MUSIC DO THE TALKING

Imagine a laid-back casual dedicated acoustic music venue - where musicians and music lovers (of all sorts, forms & styles) can hang out, relax & present their new music & ideas - on a regular basis? Where musicians are not pressured to entertain at all costs, but where professional & amateurs, tourists & locals, can meet & match, entertain & experiment. Not unlike restaurants or clubs in any other cities - Johannesburg, London, Cape Town, Perth, Singapore...

With the (Jazz, Folk & Blues) talent that this province has to offer it seems strange that Durban has only one successful fulltime local venue in the BAT Centre. The TUSK INN only operates once a week - one day for Folk and one for Blues Bands.

Terry Rosenberg's dream for Durban is to generate interest and create a venue somewhere in the city. This idea will be thrown around between tunes by a number of local Durban musicians in the casual setting of the Blue Zoo in Mitchell Park on Wednesday August 16th. Let the Music do the talking... Come & join us for the evening & listen to solo performances by Melvin Peters - the featured musician.

A special surprise guest appearance by Terry Rosenberg on piano with guitarist Alan Judd & percussionist Dan Chiorboli.

Other solo music guests who will be on hand to contribute to the evening - should time allow - include: Nibs Van Der Spuy & Anton Cawthorn Blazeby, Pat Matshakiza, Darius Brubeck, Dave Tarr, Mageshen Naidoo, Bongani Sokhela, Sue Barry, Ken E Henson, Syd Kitchen & others.

Booking essential - Call Larry or Geoff at the Blue Zoo 303-3568

SA ROCK IS WORLD CLASS

SA Rock is world class, in fact, SA possesses rock bands superior to many bands that have achieved international fame. Is the world prejudiced, or merely ignorant? The world is content to listen to what they are sold, judging quality only by the size of an advertising campaign, that's what I think.

mailto:kbshoe@hotmail.com

{Ed: Kurt is from Texas and has never ever been to South Africa, but I think his collection of SA music (from Four Jacks and A Jill to Battery 9) far exceeds the average South Africans.}

FREEDOMS CHILDREN ON CD

Can you or Julian Laxton set the record straight here about which are
legitimate CD re-issues? Are any currently in print and available from South Africa? I would like to get more South African rock CDs, but prefer to deal with legit labels where the band members actually receive their fair share of the proceeds.

John Berg

{Ed: The only official Freedoms Children album available on CD is 'Astra' on the Gallo label (Catalogue no. CDRED619). There is also an unofficial German pressing (on the TRC label, I think...).

'Galactic Vibes' which is listed on Amazon.com is an unofficial release on the German Buy or Die label...

'Battle Hymn' is not available at all though most of the tracks appear as bonus tracks on the new 'Galactic Vibes' unofficial CD.

In fact, the Legends of SA Rock seem to have received very little recognition in any CD re-issue programmes. One would think that a band like Rabbitt, at least, which included the now very famous Trevor Rabin would have some sort of re-issue programme, but no, only a Hits compilation CD. A very good collection, but what about those other Rabbitt albums, hey.}
