---------------

FOUR JACKS AND A JILL ON TV

The MNET TV programme "Carte Blanche" featured an interview with members of Four Jacks And A Jill on Sunday evening, 6th August. They showed short snippets of the band recording in the 60s as well some excerpts from their new album '2000 and Beyond', due for release very shortly.

The new album includes some new material and re-recordings of several of their hits including 'Timothy', 'I Looked Back', 'Hey Mister' and, of course, 'Master Jack'. It will be available on One World as soon as it is released. 'Master Jack' was written by David Marks in September 1966 about his experiences working on the East Rand Gold Mines at the time Dr Verwoerd, the SA Prime Minister, was assassinated. It went to #1 all over the world in 1968 and even cracked the US Billboard Top 20. (Some sources say it went to #8, though the "Billboard Book of USA Top 40 Hits" has #18 as its peak position).

It really is a strange, strange world we live in...

SA MUSIC WEEK 2000 (August 28 to September 2)

The National Arts Council (NAC) and the Music Industry Development
Initiative (MIDI Trust) will be spearheading the event with the
sponsorship and support of the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and
Technology (DACST), Business Arts South Africa (BASA), the Association
of South African Music Industry (ASAMI) and the South African/Norwegian
Music, Education and Development Project (MMINO). To maintain the momentum over the course of that week, this group will provide a comprehensive program of musical activities.

These include The South African Music Week conference on August 30
addressing critical issues facing the industry. A career programme for
schools around the country, here industry practitioners will give
detailed lectures on what the South African music industry offers in the way of careers. Skills Development workshops for music industry
practitioners - experts in diverse fields will work with practitioners
to enhance music industry skills. These workshops and seminars
throughout the week will have the best local and international speakers
within their fields. Songwriting workshops will be hosted for musicians.

The South African Music Week Studio Recording Project will again give
previously unrecorded musicians the chance to work in professional
studios to lay demo tracks. Retail activity including in-store
appearances by artists. And, finally, lots of live music.

"The education and training programmes fulfil an important aspect of
South African Music Week," says Rosie Katz "It is vital for us to take all the knowledge we have regarding the music industry and pass it on to the next generation of aspirant musicians, technicians, producers, managers, agents, and other industry practitioners. This way our relatively fledgling industry will blossom into a world giant."

Confident words from one of the prime motivators and driving forces
behind both last and this year’s events (and the recently released,
updated version of the South African Music Industry Directory 2000). But an overwhelming amount of support is needed from all sectors of the
music industry to help achieve Rosie Katz’s and many other people’s aims and dreams. Anyone wishing to get involved on any level with the SA Music Week 2000 can do so by contacting:

STARLOG: The Oppikoppi Trek 2000 Diary

Lifeforms in this Starlog: The Gatekeeper (an eater of samoosas); Albert Frost (The Blues Broers); Valiant Swart; Battery 9; The Blunted Stuntman (206), Angelique, the new Madonna; Boo!; Piet Botha; The Toastie Show

Trekdate: 20000805
Location: Oppikoppi (Northam)

Grit under the fingernails and behind the eyes, and the grinning haze of musical happiness that pervades all. The first full day and night of the Trek is behind, with ears and muscular stiffness borne as the battlescars.

Whoa! Step aside for Ampie Omo, streaking by on golden platform boots; transforming from the air-steward guest slot he blew for Ssshhh! up on Tassenberg Stage, into the blonde rock-god of Boo! as he runs towards his gig on the main stage.

Then, all the energy is distilled, concentrated and, come to think of it, distilled a few times further after the sets are all finished. Musicians, crew and the fans gravitate towards what is the country's finest ever bar, for just a few glorious days each year. It's late night at 206 @ Oppikoppi and, like Valiant said, it's "Two Black Labels and a Myprodol"

4.NEW RELEASES
-----------------

CAPE MYSTIQUE - TIM HOARE (Gallo)

Pop, Rock, Jazz fusion and New Age meet in a glorious keyboard and sax-driven "potjie" of new original songs by journeyman musician, Tim Hoare. The songs here are inspired by living in and around Cape Town (Tim lives in Noordhoek) and a couple of tracks even include sea sound FX just to make sure you get the aural picture. Very pleasant listening and a great chill-out after my normal diet of hard rock. I especially enjoy the Hammond organ sound on a few tracks. Recommended. (BC)

--------

IN THE MEANTIME - WATERSHED

Watershed is essentially a duo/band comprising Craig Hinds on vocals, acoustic guitar, piano and pen, and Paul McIver on lead guitar. When performing and recording they draw on the skills of ex-Amersham bassist Nathan Waywell, and drummer Tulsa Pittwaya.

Their debut album, 'In The Meantime' is out now on the EMI label. It has 11 stunning tracks and, besides the first single, 'Shine On Me', also includes 'Indigo Girl', 'Yesterday Again' and 'Rite Of Time', plenty of material to continue the chart attack. Hauntingly beautiful songs like 'Angel and 'Don't Lie To Me' have an REM feel to them and this album deserves to be played over and over again... (SS/BC)

-----------

DIE AFTA PARTIE - FUNNY CARP

This pop trio from Cape Town should not be confused with the harder and hip hoppier Brasse Van Die Kaap outfit, also from the Cape. Funny Carp are Kleintjie, Stretch Langaan, and Sly aka Punkie, and these three bewigged, funsters have just released 'Die Afta Partie', their third collection of hard-hitting, socially-relevant diatribes at the ills of our times, couched as always in their poppy, comedic arrangements. The success and acceptance of the first two albums - 'Sopnat' and 'Too Damn Duidelik' - proved that Funny Carp's various relevant messages to their neighbours and the kids on the gangster/crime/aids/drug-ridden Cape Flats was essential and opportune. Songs like 'Save The Children', 'We Will Stop You' (to a sample of Queen's song of a similar name), 'Corner', and 'My Broertjie, My Bra' (a cover of the David Kramer/Taliep Petersen song from the musical 'District Six'), illustrate Funny Carp's workable mixture of fun-pop and heartfelt lyrics.

The group has achieved cult status in and around the Cape Flats, where their previous hit, 'Duidelik' became a huge hit based on the acceptance of the expression into the local slang. 'Die Afta Partie' (a single on the album), refers to the "After Party" following the birth of the new Millennium. The group performs live as often as possible and also does free shows in the local schools. It is going to take a huge effort to sort out the many social ills that plague the bottom corner of the African continent. Somehow the popular music of the day always seems to have a more direct route to the hearts and minds of the affected children and teenagers. With these forming a majority of the Funny Carp fanbase, the group has seized the opportunity to use this influence to get certain messages home, without the usual heavy-handed polemic. That has always been one of rock music's most important functions and Funny Carp deserve credit for their effort. (SS)

5.USA FOR SA

THE BEST OF SA POP VOLUME 3
Gallo CDREDD 610
Compiled by Malcolm Lombard.

The Best of SA Pop Volume 3 resembles a mix of Volumes 1 and 2. Volume 1 is pure pop. Volume 2 has a mix of pop and rock 'n' roll on the first disc with more modern rock on the second disc. Volume 3 compromises between the previous two with its selections ranging from pure pop, rock 'n' roll, and pop rock, to pure rock tunes.

This set also has a number of double selections by the same artist, as
in two by: Johnny Kongos, The Staccatos, Jonathan Butler, Dickie Loader and the Blue Jeans, and others. Some songs inspired comments, but those unmentioned are still well-worth hearing -- all of the 49 selections are well-chosen. Here are some representative songs:

'Chicken Rock' -- The Chick Charmers Combo great rock 'n' roll
instrumental with a lively honkin' sax.

'Timothy' -- The classic by Four Jacks and a Jill. Emminently
sing-along-able and as pure as pop gets, especially when sung by Glenys
Lynne.

'He's Gonna Step On you Again' -- Johnny Kongos, and a rocker. I sure
want to learn more about this guy, a talented musician whose career has
spanned the rock 'n' roll era ('Johnny and the Mermaid', by Johnny Kongos and the G Men, track 5) and, with this raver, to hard rock days.

{Ed: this song went to #4 on the UK charts in 1971}

'That's Why I Love You' -- Richard Jon Smith's vocal stylings seem
contrived or forced, not as easy and natural as the other pop songs on this set.

'Time' -- This tune by The Dealians makes me wonder: are all of their
songs up-tempo happy tunes? If so, a collection of their work would cheer anyone. Perky stuff.

'I Need a Little Love' -- by Lionel Peterson is more than the pop tune it seems at first due to the phasing, or similar effect, on the vocals in the chorus. That makes it more than a straight-forward pop song.

Disc 2:
'Miss Eva Goodnight' -- this song by Crocodile Harris has to be one of
the finest pop rock songs I've heard out of South Africa. It is dramatic, catchy, meaningful, and it swings. Is this not a classic?

{Ed: McCully Workshop are the musicians on this Mike McCullagh-penned song by Robin "Crocodile Harris" Graham from Somerset West}

'Please Stay' -- Whoa, this is a guy. I thought the singer
sounded like Timi Yuro of long-ago. Now that I'm okay with this guy's voice like I am okay with the late Curtis Mayfield's falsetto, it's a good song. His other contribution to this set, 'I Love How You Love Me', is somewhat thin. Because 'I Love How You Love Me' is so schmaltzy a song, I'll bet it's on one of those 'Love Songs' collections.

(In fact, out of Volume 3's 49 songs, there are a fair number of love
songs that could be used to good effect as a soundtrack for making out,
unless your girlfriend is a hardened cynic who has "Property of the Jo'Burg Hell's Angels Motorcycle Club" tattooed on her rear end).

{Ed: Jonathan Butler was only about 13 when he recorded these songs, so I guess that would explain the falsetto vocals}

'Hak Hom Blokkies' -- by David Kramer. I suspect that this is a South
African pop song known by a majority of South Africans, second only to the great 'Shosholoza' (which is more than a pop song). In my rudimentary collection of forty or so SA CDs, I have two or three copies of 'Hak Hom Blokkies'.

'I Like' -- John Ireland does some pillow talk. This one might even melt a biker chick -- it possesses both sensuous and sensual warmth. The babe and guy emoting moaningly in the background (she gets the left speaker, he the right) are probably in candlelight and intwined by tendrils of incense -- while John talks about kissing and eating fruit. Care to eat a peach?

{Ed: an Angie Peach, maybe?}

'Feel So Strong' -- P.J. Powers and Steve Kekana. With these two, how
can a song go wrong? Don't think it can. Their talented duet is
effortless. These two singers do what they do best and do it together. Nice dance number.

'Whisper Your Secret' -- Helicopters, and good stuff it is. From the big hair rock era, a nice dance number. Every Helicopters song I hear makes me shake my head in amazement at their talent. I must include Bernard Binns' new CD in my next One World order.

'It's Amazing (the Incredible Dance)' -- Okay, it's an amusing novelty,
but doesn't grab me. Well, it grabs me to the point of being unable to rid my mind of the nasal-voiced woman singing "It's amazing!", for an hour or two after hearing it. A clever novelty that would soon grow annoying if heard with any regularity on the radio.

The other songs out of the 49 tracks on Volume 3 are just as listenable
as those mentioned, but they inspired only pleasurable listening (songs such as: either song by the wonderful Dickie Loader and the Blue Jeans, the two by the equally wonderful Staccatos, 'Woogie Boogie' by Platform 6, 'Live On' by Pierre Charmoy, and 'Caravan of Love' by The Lovemasters).

One aspect of 'The Best of SA Pop' series that I appreciate is how Malcolm Lombard has arranged the songs chronologically. The listener starts with early pop on disc 1 and is taken through the late 80s by the end of the second. The chronological aspect makes 'The Best of SA Pop' an orchestrated trip through some of the best pop and rock songs of South Africa's creative musical history.

Overall, as mentioned in the intro, this two CD set of 'The Best of SA Pop Volume 3' has a wider mix than Volume 1, not as much pure rock as Volume 2, but there is still a natural flow from song to song. Each two disc volume has its own personality, and this one is engaging by virtue of the mix of pop, pop-rock, dance-rock, and pure rock -- though there is no denying that Volume 2 is the essential starter kit for the South African Rock novice.

I rate this entire series highly, I couldn't think my South African rock collection complete without all three volumes. For pure pop, I enjoy Volume 1, for rock and more modern styles I prefer Volume 2, but for overall range of pop, rock 'n' roll, and rock, Volume 3 is the one.

The songs of 'The Best of SA Pop' that are older than the phrase "Local is lekker" are still lekker, and the songs that come from the era of that fine PR phrase embody it just as well as the modern bands on 5FM's Showcase Collection CDs. As far as this Yank is concerned, Local was and is Lekker.

6.CLASSIC SA ROCK
-----------------

ELLAMENTAL

After building up a good following in SA, Ella Mental moved to California to try and make the big time. The result was an album simply entitled 'EllaMental'. My first question was did they have to leave SA to make this album? I don't think so. In fact I think they actually lost something they had in South Africa. The punky edge to Heather Mac's voice is all but gone on the record, surfacing occasionally on the heavier, darker tracks such as 'Madman' and 'Is it any wonder', the latter being spoilt by Heather's attempt at rap (the American influence?) which borders on the embarrasing.

It sounds like a group who are not quite sure who they are, fluctuating
between sounding like Mango Groove and pure American Rock, being
Americanised, but desperately clutching to their African roots.

That said, there are some really good songs on the album. 'Africa' and
'Freedom Jive' are really good African Pop songs, while the melancholic cover version of 'No Woman No Cry' borders on sublime. There are some good brass arrangments on a number of songs keeping the general feel of the album in an upbeat mood. However underlying this is a sadness that is evident in lyrics such as "It's been sometime since I left my land of birth/ and the reasons for my leaving haven't changed" from 'Africa' and a strong political message in a number of songs.

This is not the EllaMental of 'Pressure' and 'See Yourself' days. They
managed to produce a good but not great album which fell short of their early promise. I think the 30 million lonely people of South Africa would have been better off had they stayed.

GLAM ROCK REMEMBERED

The era of glitz (the yin yang of the bohemian flower child). Some would call it the sell out, but times had changed and power rock combined with quick melody created overnight lords of the manor. In order to substantiate an era, we have to start with a given point, and what could be more ironic than the birth of glam signifying a lost status. Our time starts in space with a man trying to find his way back to earth ('Space Oddity'), released in 1969 by David Bowie. There is no doubt that while Bowie forged the platform for the birth of glam, his wife Angie gave the world a hair style, and Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars changed the face of rock forever.

Although an intellectual rewind could well and truly be challenged by the fact that the formation of The Move in 1966 by Roy Wood was the birthing seed to glam rock. To capitalise on this fact it would be safer to label Roy Wood's latter combo Wizzard as a more thoroughbred glam rock entity. One of the shortfalls of glam rock was the inability to perform at live concerts and media took full advantage of pretty faces that cut overnight tunes for the record moguls. The Osmonds, The Bay City Rollers, The Partridge Family (featuring David Cassidy), the list is endless. Yet amidst the colourful fur and shiny space suits, glam did bring forth block-busting talent.

Slade in particular gave unlimited energy to their fans at live concerts and an example of supreme glam splendour can be found in their first number one hit, October 1971, 'Coz I Luv You' (written in a half an hour). Slade was formed out of the flower power siblings of the band The N'betweens and proceeded to become UK's hottest live attraction with 23 top 30 hits. Let us also pay respect to a glam rock entity called The Sweet, originally known as The Sweet Shop in 1968 but moved shop in 1969. The motley clan from Scotland powered into the charts in the early seventies and were one of the few Glam Rock bands to make it in the USA.

In one sense confusion ruled supreme in the world of glam, and one had to be extremely discerning when opting for quality in the space of quantity. The fake tinsel of Gary Glitter or the quick step vibe of Mud could quite easily draw you into a fantasy orgasm that is quickly vomited out in the morning light. Marc Bolan of Tyrannosaurus Rex had left the flower children of Rarn, and entered the boogie glam with a re-vamped T-Rex. Obviously taking Chuck Berry's acclaimed statement "I can only play three chords, and I play them really well", to heart, Marc Bolan climbed the charts with some rather impressive boogie melody, which ended abruptly due to a fatal car crash (in 1977).

Sophistication gave glam a fashionable intellectualism which could be found in the genius of Roxy Music headed by Brian Ferry, Phil Manzanera, Andy Mackay (aka Eddie Rifff) and keyboard wizard (Brian) Eno. Most likely the most diverse and masterful contribution to glam rock. This could only be rivalled by Bill Nelson and his Scottish combo, Be-Bop Deluxe. Formed in 1972, styled after David Bowie's science fiction rock effort and suitably retired in 1979. Even soul took its hand at glam when Caribbean/ Brit inter-racial band Hot Chocolate formed in 1970 spotted the charts in the seventies with the help of Mickey Most. Tribute must be given to Errol Brown and Tony Wilson who wrote most of their hits and although commercial, captured the glam era respectively from 1972 to 1977.

To the north further genius had arrived from Glasgow with the likes of David Paton, Stewart Tosh, Billy Lyall and Ian Bairmson namely Pilot, who were later to find fame with the Alan Parsons project. Underrated as song writers and wrongly manifested as another Bay City Rollers, Pilot were a class act, powering into the charts with 'Magic', 'January' and 'Just A Smile'. Providing back up to another great glam band Sparks, various members moved on such as Stewart Tosh joining 10cc.

Success stories were far and few between, but one particular individual, a truck driver landed the part of Jesus in the musical "Godspell" and later the leading role in "That'll Be The Day", David Essex! A brilliant glam rock release, 'Rock on', written by David in tribute to fifties rock, was turned down as the film sound track. Thanks to Jeff Wayne, it peaked at number three only to be overtaken by his second number one, 'Hold Me Close', in 1975.

Glam would not have had superstar status if ex-journalist, Steve Harley hadn't come to the forefront with his band Cockney Rebel. Influenced by Roxy Music and Bowie, Harley went on to launch an array of hits namely 'Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)' and the masterful, 'Sebastian' which was given strength by the keyboard wizardry of Duncan Mackay later to join 10cc.

The million dollar question is defined by discerning the division between power rock and glam. Do we separate the diverse 10cc and the glitzy Queen from these shiny spacemen that walked a while in the seventies, or is the melting pot a source of inspiration for the new romanticist eighties? The question that will hover eternally is: Was it glam or scam? Yet in the electronic nineties we nod with approval to Elmer Gentry's 'Why Did You Do It' by Stretch or 'Howzat' by Sherbert. The velvet goldmine stands eroded and mined out, but the gems are still displayed through the ages.

AG PLEEZ DEDDY

Bruce wrote last week...

I am looking for a copy of the lyrics to this song.
Does anyone know where I can get them at short notice?

Rod Currin replied at 13.24 on the 31 July...

Hi Bruce

At 'short notice' I submit the words of 'Ag Pleez Deddy' as remembered by me while sitting at work. The second and third verse may actually be the third and second verse - if you know what I mean. I can't seem to remember a fourth verse, other than the 'extra' one I've included. Also, I've used 'poetic license' with some spelling ...

Rod Currin

{Ed: Well here are the lyrics with benefit of a week to listen to the CD and correct some mistakes, though some words still defy transcription...}

AG PLEEZ DEDDY
(The Ballad Of The Southern Suburbs)
Jeremy Taylor, written in 1961
Available on 'Ag Pleez Deddy - The Best Of Jeremy Taylor' compilation CD (Gallo, CD RED 608, 1996) and 'The Best Of SA Pop Volume 1' CD (Gallo, CDGMPD 40485)

Ag pleez Deddy won't you take us to the drive-in
All six, seven of us, eight, nine, ten
We wanna see a flick about
Tarzan an' the Ape-men
An' when the show is over you can bring us back again

Chorus:
Popcorn, chewing gum, peanuts an' bubble gum
Ice cream, candy floss an' Eskimo Pie
Ag Deddy how we miss
Nigger balls an' licorice
Pepsi Cola, ginger beer
and Canada Dry

Ag Pleez Deddy won't you take us to the fun-fair
We wanna have a ride on the bumper-cars
We'll buy a stick of candy floss
And eat it on the octopus
Then we'll take the rocket ship that goes to Mars

Chorus

Ag pleez Deddy won't you take us to the wrestling
We wanna see an ou called Sky High Lee
When he fights Willie Liebenberg
There's gonna be a murder
'Cos Willie's gonna donner that blerrie yankee

Chorus

Ag pleez Deddy won't you take us off to Durban
It's only eight hours in the Chevrolet
There's spans of sea an' sand an' sun
And fish in the aquarium
That's a lekker place for a holiday

Chorus

Ag Pleez Deddy - VOERTSEK!

Ag sis Deddy if we can't (go) to bioscope
Or go off to Durban life's a heng of a bore
If you won't take us to the zoo
Then what the heck else can we do
But go on out and moere all the oukies next door

Chorus

{Ed: This song was taken from a live recording of the stage musical 'Wait A Minim' in 1962. It was banned by the SABC (as were most of Jeremy's songs). It reached #1 on the LM radio charts in June 1962. Jeremy received a gold disc for over 75 000 units sold of 'Ag Pleez Deddy' - s'true's bob)

THE WARRIOR

I have desperately tried to find the album 'The Warrior' by Ipi 'n Tombi. I saw you are familiar with it (http://www.rock.co.za/files/warrior.html).

I'd be really happy if you could help me know where I can get it on a CD (I got it on a vinyl record already).

(by the way, I thought I was the only one...)

Ben
mailto:ben@send2post.com

{Ed: no, you are not alone, Ben... almost every week we get somebody looking for this original recording of 'Ipi Tombi' featuring the incredible vocals of the late Margaret Singana (she passed away in May this year). Unfortunately this album has not yet been released on CD.}

ASYLUM KIDS

I'm desperately trying to find a CD from the Asylum Kids called 'Black Poem Jugglers'. My question is if you know any SA online CD store where I can order it. I tried some, but they don't seem to sell it anymore, I understand that the CD is not in the shops anymore after 20 years or so, but there must be a way to find it. Maybe you have a suggestion...

thanks a lot
