1.WHAT'S NEW

SA MUSIC WEEK 2000 (August 28 to September 2)
The signs are good. Last year we had the very successful SA Music Day,
this year its grown into the SA Music Week. And why not? For one day
last year, South African music had its own public holiday. Live
performances of all shapes, sizes, and styles; workshops, discussions,
way-above-the-quota radio play. The huge diversity and quality of South
African music was spread like a banquet, and from all reports, the
public responded positively. Although the attendances at these events
were reassuring, its hard to calculate the lasting effect this had on
the musical consciousness of the SA public. But the organizers and
sponsors and many other cultural bodies involved this year believe that
there is enough interest and enthusiasm to extend this to a week.
The National Arts Council (NAC) and the Music Industry Development
Initiative (MIDI Trust) will be spearheading the event with the
sponsorship and support of the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and
Technology (DACST), Business Arts South Africa (BASA), the Association
of South African Music Industry (ASAMI) and the South African/Norwegian
Music, Education and Development Project (MMINO). To maintain the momentum over the course of that week, this group will provide a comprehensive program of musical activities.
These include - The South African Music Week conference on August 30
addressing critical issues facing the industry. A career programme for
schools around the country, here industry practitioners will give
detailed lectures on what the South African music industry offers in the way of careers. Skills Development workshops for music industry
practitioners - experts in diverse fields will work with practitioners
to enhance music industry skills. These workshops and seminars
throughout the week will have the best local and international speakers
within their fields. Songwriting workshops will be hosted for musicians.
The South African Music Week Studio Recording Project will again give
previously unrecorded musicians the chance to work in professional
studios to lay demo tracks. Retail activity including in-store
appearances by artists. And, finally, lots of live music.
Rosie Katz, from the MIDI trust explained further: "Music has always
been a vital component of South African society, yet it is an
underground river, affecting us from below, never receiving the
recognition it deserves. What we plan to do is expose this river so all
South Africans can drink from it and experience the refreshing joy that South African music brings. As well as simply creating an awareness of and celebrating South African music, the SA Music Week aims to boost the profile of South African musicians, enhancing skills and strengthening networks within the industry, while taking South African music to live music venues, retail outlets, radio TV, in print, conference rooms, studios, schools, community centres on the street and into homes".
"The education and training programmes fulfil an important aspect of
South African Music Week," adds Katz "It is vital for us to take all
the knowledge we have regarding the music industry and pass it on to the next generation of aspirant musicians, technicians, producers, managers, agents, and other industry practitioners. This way our relatively fledgling industry will blossom into a world giant."

behind both last and this years events (and the recently released,
updated version of the South African Music Industry Directory 2000). But an overwhelming amount of support is needed from all sectors of the

TIGHTLINES
Robin Auld is a well-known South African musician but not many fans are aware of his hidden writing talents. 'Tightlines', his new book, covers fishing, music, friendships and culture. Well the tent was unbelievable.... first feature set dressers on big budgets and acid couldn't have done it. Multicolour luminescent skeleton spheres, swinging below canvas. The Siam tent at Womad Reading is the most impressive stage I've seen Tananas on. Pared down to it's bones: Steve Newman, whose guitar I always claim is too perfect and precise to be truly enjoyable... usually just before my soul gets torn from earth and the clay it leaves behind goes limp and slack... Gito Baloi, bassist of precision and style, more perfection with a winning smile... and speaking of smiles... can those dreadlocks possibly be crowning Ian Hermanns' head? My smile grows.
The R640 tickets pale into insignificance, and the SA percentage of the audience show the Poms how to dance to this stuff! I gotta say I kept looking at that drummer, the old magic seemed a little restrained sometimes but shit, it must be him... and then the solo just grabbed the bits of clay left gibbering on the dancefloor by Steve and Gito and posted them straight to Rock Heaven. It's Genuinely Ian!
I've never bought a Tananas LP, there's a lot of my SA collection I'll replace before I do, but for sheer musical precision, for craftsmanship like an inlaid table of precious stones, whose centre is a tapestry depicting dusty Africa they simply cannot be touched. Fine Art, maturing with age.

JUSTIN BERGH - LOVE THE SINNER
Justin Bergh is a 21-year old rocker from Cape Town who has been touted
as the latest in a long line of great white (well blonde, actually)
hopes for the SA rock industry. Bergh appeared out of nowhere armed with his guitar and a collection of self-penned rock ballads. He was snapped up by BMG SA and dispatched to Peter "Reggie" Bowmans Thunderbox Studios in Australia to record his debut album. The resulting 14-track album includes 12 Bergh originals as well the first single, the title-track Love The Sinner, a slow-building rock ballad written by Brian Howes, which has been receiving tons of airplay on 5FM and other SA rock stations.
The other cover on the album is No Ordinary World which was written by Stephen Allen Davis and Lars Anderson. This songs huge hook and
burgeoning guitar sound fits in comfortably alongside Berghs own
impressive material including the softer So Satisfied, Free From The
Pain, Everythings Alright, and Drive Me Crazy. (SS)

The hottest Rockets album since "The Rockets" in 1996!
South Africa's longest-serving, hard-working, and still-surviving group
delivers yet again ...
The Rockets seem to have been around forever - they were at one time signed to Jive/Zomba supremo Clive Calder (now N'Sync/Backstreet Boys/Britney Spears), then Clout/PJ Powers/Hotline boss Mike Fuller, then Just Jinger/Dr Victor & the Rasta Rebels chief Chris Ghelakis - and now with Cape-based Patric van Blerk, and also, newly with Select Music for distribution, who have Cape and Johannesburg operations.
Over the years, the Rockets have played to more people than most, sold more records than most, and performed on the same bill with stars such as Spice Girls, Luther Vandross, Wet Wet Wet, Billy Ocean and also local brothers and sisters like Hugh Masekela, Brenda and Chicco.
The release of 'The ReMixes' through Select is the first step in a
concerted plan to break the Rockets out of 'The Grape Curtain' - to become a fully-fledged 'South African' act - as opposed to ...' from the Cape'. In addition, they now tour abroad for approximately a third of the year, and are currently on a tour of Israel. With their growing international market in mind, and with an offer from a Hamburg-based company, the Rockets have started recording with young, cutting-edge producers such as R.E.D. and Storm from Cool Funk. This has resulted in 'Something's Burning'. This is the Sound Of The New Rockets.
As a salute to their enormous Cape fan base, the group have also finally included most of their famous and best-loved 'medleys' - plus adding new ones such as 'The Vengaboys Mix' and 'The Reggae Mix', which is currently on the KFM local charts, having been #1.

Adam de Beer, is being rushed released to TV nationally.

MASQUE OF SHADOWS - YOKE SHIRE
Yoke Shire are a Boston, USA based progressive rock phenomenon. This band's influences are many and varied and range from hard blues/rock right on through to Celtic rhythms.
A multi-talented 3-piece, Yoke Shire stun with tracks like 'Black Tower' and 'Shape Of A Dancer' which would not be out of place on a Jethro Tull or Santana album.
'Magic Circle' is an acoustic instrumental in the style that Led Zeppelin were so fond of on albums like 'Phsysical Graffiti'. The 9-minute epic 'The Brook, The Mirror and The Maiden' is very modern prog-rock and a pleasure to listen to. The title track is a song Deep Purple or Rainbow would be proud of.
All-in-all a stunningly diverse album of sounds and influences which deserves to be heard. (BC)

THE BEST OF SA POP VOLUME 1

An old Tin Pan Alley saying goes, "Give me a new song that sounds like an old song." The two discs of 'The Best of SA Pop Volume 1' contain pure and fun pop songs in the classic style, and they are songs new to me. The American definition of "pop" may differ slightly from the South African definition. To me, "pop" means melody-driven vocal tunes. Fortunately I enjoy pop, the kind of light music that is an anathema to Battery 9 fans, I'm sure. Whenever I crave bouncy and catchy melodies with a rock 'n' roll beat, 'The Best of SA Pop' series satisfies.
This double CD has many rock flourishes, crisp guitar solos, and rock 'n' roll drums, but mostly it's melody pop. There are a number of country tunes here, too, songs that rely on melody, singing, and songwriting, so I suspect that country is popular in South Africa for those classic song qualities. But what we're here for is pop rock of the style that flourished on the world's radios in the Sixties -- even though this series is dubbed as being from 1960 to 1990. The range of these pop songs covers emotional love songs, lively dance numbers, covers of American and European pop songs, some country as mentioned, and all of it flows seamlessly from one track to the next.
Among the 48 songs on these two discs are well over 40 that I enjoy very much, a couple that don't hit me, one I habitually skip, and some that stand out for commentary.
'Ag Pleeze Deddy' -- Is it just me, or does anyone else think there are
hints of SA life and culture in this song? A funny song, even though I
don't have all of it figured out. Someday I'll hear the live version
wherein Jeremy Taylor explains it all to his non-South African audience.
'The Seagull's Name was Nelson' -- Pure political folk. This song
strikes me as nearly as powerful and timely a song as Bright Blue's
'Weeping'. When originally released, was anyone in doubt as to what it was about?
'Ramaja' -- A different sort of song from Glenys Lynne, she of the
Perfectly Lovely Voice. This song lodges in the brain like a pop tune is supposed to do and was a hit.
'Tchip Tchip' -- Like saying 'I like some disco', I feel perfectly okay
about saying 'I enjoy this novelty tune'. The lead noise is like a cute, living or cartoon animal of some kind.
[This song is also known as 'The Birdie Song' and is probably best known as 'The Clap Clap Song' which was taken into the UK charts in 1983 by Belgium band The Klaxons - ed}
'Tears On the Telephone' -- I listen to this for the little girl's
accent. Okay, she doesn't have an accent: I'm the one with the accent.
Whatever, this is the sort of song that plays with one's emotions, like
'Teddy Bear', and I am not a fan of such overly sad songs because after the initial listens the emotional impact becomes annoying.
'Count the Red Cars' -- Mature pop, a song about being on the road. It
has a ring of honesty.
When preparing to write this review, I sat down in silence and wrote a
brief commentary about each of the 48 songs according to my memory of them after extensive listens to 'The Best of SA Pop Volume 1'. I could recall nearly every tune and realized that I enjoyed just about every tune, too, usually for the melody. I could not recall only three or four songs, and that means only they are not objectionable -- aural wallpaper songs. A number of the songs make me imagine I'm driving the Garden Route or driving through extensive farmland, though I've never been to South Africa. Most all of the 48 songs are emminently sing-along-able, even on the first listen -- a sign of a classic pop song.
'Teddy Bear' I skip whenever I get to it, though I did listen to it again for the sake of this review. The song's faults for me is that it is too poignant, too bittersweet, and that I have heard Red Sovine's version too many times. In fact, the few songs I enjoy less are covers of familiar American songs. The original homegrown SA tunes are more ear-catching. My enjoyment of the South African originals probably has something to do with South Africa's joy in melody on these discs.
The three double CD sets of the 'Best of SA Pop' series are the important foundation of my SA rock CD library. The six discs and the book 'The History of Contemporary Music of South Africa' by Garth Chilvers and Tom Jasiukowicz (TOGA, 1994) have been invaluable in making me slightly more than merely conversant about SA pop and rock music -- I hope.
If you are from SA and old enough, this series will be full of memories
for you. If you are from South Africa and young, these songs are a part of your musical heritage as much as any other sort of music that your diverse nation offers. All of us can enjoy the pure gold pop music on 'The Best of SA Pop Volumes 1, 2, and 3' -- old songs that sound new to me.

THE RISING TIDE - BRIGHT BLUE

Bright Blue's first album was the training ground for this brilliant album. While the first album is somewhat raw and loose, this is tight, refined and smooth. Obviously 'Weeping' is the highlight of the album (voted the number 1 song of the previous century [on the Amuzine/ SA Rock Digest poll]). It still amazes me that the SABC did not ban it for it's blatant musical reference to 'N'Kosi Sikelel' iAfrica', let alone
for it's political charged lyrics, yet this powerful track reached number 1 on the Radio 5 charts. This is a big song in the same way that Bohemian Rhapsody is big, but without the obscure lyrics.
Despite the high praise I have just given to 'Weeping', it is not my personal favourite on the album. I opt for the title track. This song of solidarity with a young man who had refused to to National Military Service and was sentenced to a jail. The words are powerful and the music ebbs and flows on this sublime track. It is similar in feel to 'Weeping', but to my mind just that little bit better.
But what of the rest of the album? To say that this pales into
insignificance against the the 2 tracks above is probably true, but would be like saying that the rest of the Beatles work pales into insigificance compared to 'Sgt Peppers'. Bright Blue's ability to combine "Western Rock" with the rythms and sounds of South African "Township" music easily equals and generally surpasses Paul Simon's work on 'Graceland'. It is certainly up there with Johnny Clegg (who was the master). While the sound is at times similar to 'Graceland', where Bright Blue have the edge is that their lyrics were politically astute with an insight that Paul Simon could never have.
This album probably had it's greatest appeal with young middle class English speaking whites. It said things that a lot of us felt at the time and got away with it in the most tuneful manner. Probably the greatest protest album of the apartheid error (sorry... era).

If you were wondering what Peter Hanmer from Off The Edge has been doing since the release of their new album 'Just Another Band', wonder no more. Peter has moved into a more acoustic mood and discovered a new talent in the voice of Sherry Lee.
I received a 6 track demo of Sherry Lee and I am blown away. Her voice is like Annie Haslam of Renaissance fame, and not disimilar to Maggie Riley (remember Mike Oldfield's 'Moonlight Shadow'?).
Peter has written lyrics for the Off The Edge instrumental song 'Blueprint' and retitled it 'Dreams'. Also on the demo is a goosebumps-inducing version of 'The Winter And The Summer'. This song was written by Dave Lambert and appeared on the classic Strawbs album 'Bursting At The Seams'. It also features the vocal debut of one Peter Hanmer!
Another surprise was that Peter decided to rearrange and re-record the epic 'St Aidans' from 'Just Another Band'... and its wonderful.
So watch this space for more details on Sherry Lee. We hope to have a website address for her soon and you will be able to listen to MP3 extracts on the net.

THE MISUNDERSTOOD (Stolen, ripped off, wrongly labelled and misrepresented)
The years of the sixties and the seventies gave freely of creative songwriters, poets and musicians. It was in this cloud of creative and esoteric talent that the power of greed slowly dissolved the magic. The legal eagles and the axe wielding record moguls that splintered artistic development, destroyed musical relationships and sliced talent into offshore profit. The remnants are plain for all to see. The contractual destruction of Apple records in the seventies resulting in the demise of Badfinger, the legal dissection of the Beatles, the list is endless. But let us proceed on a journey through those hit singles that have been ripped off, stolen and well sealed in time and profit.
A brief tour in the UK of a Californian band called Spirit, caught the attention of a very young Jimmy Page who was presently a session guitarist for the band The Yardbirds. Page was fascinated by an instrumental guitar piece called 'Taurus', written by Randy California, the lead guitarist for Spirit. Randy, an innovative guitarist, named by Jimi Hendrix and astounded the west coast hippies of California by emulating classic renditions of the Hendrix singles. Jimmy Page asked Ed Cassidy, the drummer of Spirit, if he could borrow the tune and proceeded to release 'Stairway to Heaven' off the album Led Zeppelin Four.
The stolen age had landed and Barry McGuire came forth with the 'Eve of Destruction' originally done by P.F.Sloan and Steve Barri of the Grass Roots. Across the waters a Welsh four piece called The Bystanders had written 'When Jesamine Goes' which was stolen by the Casuals in the United States, note for note. A recent interview with Shawn Phillips revealed that he was the hidden sitar player on Donovan's 'Sunshine Superman' and songwriter for the jazz formidable 'Season of the Witch'. Telephonic discussion with Mickey Most confirmed the sitar issue but as far as song writing credits, he wasn't sure.
The age of rip had arrived and even the honourable Hank B Marvin of the Shadows could not resist taking Link Wray's 'Mustang' to the charts arrogantly under the same name. The Carpenters released 'Superstar' by the thousands on seven single, completely forgetting to give song writing credit to Delaney and Bonnie. And while the Four Tops gained glory for 'Walk Away Rene', Michael Brown of Left Banke who initially wrote the melody for Rene Fladen, lived in bohemian bankruptcy in Northern London. Maybe Bobby Darrin's integrity would not have been questioned if he had had the decency to list Tim Hardin as songwriter for his number one hit, 'If I Were a Carpenter'. When Nillson charted with the hit single, 'Without You', later to be revived by Mariah Carey in the nineties, Tom Evans and Pete Ham of Badfinger lived on the bread line while record moguls fought for the Apple contract. Sadly Pete Ham and Tom Evans both committed suicide in 1975 and 1983 respectively, but they say the music lives on. Carlos Santana proceeded to give new life to Peter Green's 'Black Magic Woman' and Jim Capaldi's 'Dealer' released on the 'Mister Fantasy' album by Traffic. 'The Ides of March' by Colosseum embraced 'Whiter Shade of Pale' by Procol Harum with dangerous resemblance. But who could fear Johan Sebastian Bach who was long gone. The popular soundtrack 'Baghdad Café' failed to list song writing credits to Allen Leahy of Stone the Crows, while Gary Moore did a magnificent rendition of Roy Buchanan's 'The Messiah Will Come Again'. In fact 'Parisian Walkways' came close to Santana's 'Europa' in all manner of speaking. While the Leaves proceeded to chart with 'Hey Joe', song writing credits go to Billy Cox, Tim Rose, William Roberts and the ghost of the sixties.
'Suzie Q' created good income for Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Rolling Stones and although credits go to the Dale Hawkins band, it was the lead guitarist of Dale Hawkins, James Burton, that claims he wrote the first version which was an instrumental guitar piece.
The power rock of the seventies gave Deep Purple a winner with the album 'In Rock' in 1970 due to the classic 'Child in Time'. Obviously Deep Purple were loyal fans to the Californian band It's a Beautiful Day and that wonderful and very similar track, 'Bombay Calling', by David Laflamme. Admittedly Led Zepplin were notorious for overlooking songwriters and correct credits. Even though Jimmy Page announced a number of times that Bert Jansch was his most popular mentor, his accountability seemed to ail when 'Black Mountain Side' off the debut album gave no credits to Bert Jansch and his instrumental 'Blackwater Side'.
As far as cashing in goes it was certainly the name of the game to feature 'House of the Rising Sun' and although gospel public domain, often listed the credits to themselves. Alan Price, Eric Burdon, Nina Simone, Frigid Pink, Bob Dylan and the Nashville Teens all stand guilty to this crime. Even fifties protest singer, Dave van Ronk, claimed to have initiated this melody.
Strange enough the author of all things comes to the surface even after an expanse of time and perhaps the 'Lion Sleeps Tonight' brought to the charts by Pete Seeger and the Weavers, Tokens, etc. will be the highest pay out of royalties ever seen to a black South African family abused by a former SA music mogul. Then again Pete Seeger, with all his integrity does occasionally mention only at live performances that 'Little Boxes' was written by Malvina Reynolds, but far be it for me to question the integrity of these new age travellers that play for cause and no profit. When Jesse Colin Young brought 'Get Together' to the charts it may have be appropriate to mention that Dino Valenti of the Quicksilver Messenger Service was the author of this wonderful tune, all considering that he was in prison at the time. Yes, why do the wrong people always get the glory while the sun sets on the true poets of the time. Although it is refreshing to see classic tracks like 'Born to be Wild' finally accredited to Mars Bonfire {real name: Dennis Edmonton}, while authentic classic hit singles of the sixties such as 'Never My Love' by The Association, being given due to the Andrissi Brothers, the wheel still turns with dirty cogs. So it seems as if every time a new single hits the charts, we had better gaze back into the misty sixties, to discover the roots. And thank God we do, for Dan Penn can finally pay his medical bills due to the success of The Commitments soundtrack and the classic number, 'Dark End of the Street'. Yet Dan Penn is the first person to admit that there is no other version but James Carr's.

JULUKA - THE GOOD HOPE CONCERTS
I've bought CD's for quite a while now from One World, however the above CD has eluded me for a long time.
I always thought EMI had never bothered to transfer it to CD, however I have seen a copy over here that was bought in Cape Town. This changes everything and I'm now on a mission, I've even got hold of the
catalogue number. It was released on EMI in SA, catalogue no. CDM 4051482. (Funnily enough the disc itself says it was made in the UK, (P) 1990, but says copyright is owned by EMI Music South Africa (Pty) Ltd., and the sleeve has a couple of SA addresses and is (c) EMI Music.
Is there any way you could use your many resources to see if you can get me a copy please. To be honest I believe it will be second-hand if a copy does turn up. I have no problem with that provided its in good condition.
Next question: are there any quality second hand record stores in Jo'burg or Durban whom I could contact on the subject? I've already contacted Outlaw Records in Cape Town.
Is there such a paper in South Africa which deals in second hand articles where I could place an advertisement? Well I did say I was on a mission.
