FOUR JACKS AND A JILL REFORM!

Almost every week there are requests to the Digest for info on the availability of Four Jacks And A Jill albums and CDs. It is a tribute to this pop band from the 60s and 70s that they are still held in such high regard. A regular Digest contributor from Texas, Kurt Shoemaker, originally discovered the Digest and the SA Rock Files websites during his search for their classic pop hit 'Master Jack' (Top 20 on Billboard in 1968). Well, he found it and so much more. René Mullenders (another Digest contributor) from Holland is planning a Four Jacks And A Jill website to archive the history of this influential band.

4J&J have sold over 30 000 units of their 'Greatest Hits' CD released in 1995. This CD and a 'Very Best Of... Volume 2' are both available online from One World <http://www.oneworld.co.za>

Due to overwhelming demand the band have decided to reform. A new album '2000 and Beyond' is in the making and an SA tour is planned for November (Sorry Kurt, René and other overseas fans, looks like you are going to have to come to SA to see them live!). The new album includes some new material and re-recordings of several of their hits including 'Timothy', 'I Looked Back', 'Hey Mister' and, of course, 'Master Jack'. It should be available on One World shortly.

'Master Jack' was written by Dave Marks (another Digest contributor) in September 1966 about his experiences working on the East Rand Gold Mines. This song was recorded in 20 minutes and was actually the flip-side of 'I Looked Back', but somebody flipped the single over and the rest, as they say, is history.

THE AMABALA FESTIVAL 2000

The Amabala Music Festival 2000 will be held in London in September and will play host to six of South Africa's top acts namely Springbok Nude Girls, Just Jinger, Nagual, Sugardrive, Henry Ate (Karma), and comedian Barry Hilton. Just Jinger have been writing and playing in London for some months now and will relish the opportunity to link up with these bands and show everyone what they've been producing. This will be the first time that all these acts have performed together on a live stage in the United Kingdom. The quality and diversity of this bill will hopefully encourage South Africans from all over the United Kingdom to attend this event, along with a fair representation of interested local music fans.

The Amabala Fetistival is being organized by Amabala Productions in collaboration with 1st Contact, Living Abroad Magazine and Tang Apple Sours. Amabala Productions is a South African-owned, London-based company directed by South Africans Neil Rawlinson, Mike Seale and Trenton Birch. It was established by Neil Rawlinson in September 1999, although he had run it as a side project since late 1998.

There will be two evening shows at the Shepherds Bush Empire. These two concerts will take place in the first week of September (Friday 8th and Saturday 9th) to ensure that there is no clash with any of the bigger music festivals. They will run for about six hours each with comedian Barry Hilton filling the gaps and MC-ing. There will be South African-related food and products available as well as artist merchandising and CDs. Amabala aims to create a festival atmosphere with a distinctly South African flavour, and are already planning a larger and broader musically representative event for 2001.

TREE CLINCH US DEAL

In what is seen as a major breakthrough for South African music, the Durban Christian-rock band Tree has just clinched a five-album record deal and a significant publishing deal with a division of EMI Music USA. This deal will place the band under EMI's imprint label, InPop Records (International Pop). The band, comprising John Ellis (lead guitars & songwriter), Darryl Swart (drums) and Martin Engel (bass guitar), have just arrived back in their home town after spending just under three weeks in the United States, during which the deal was finalized.

Tree's international connections were first established in the middle of 1997 when Michael Sillifant, founder of local independent record label Lush Records, first embarked on an international mission to the USA to try secure a deal for the band. After returning to SA later in the year, Lush Records decided to release Tree's first (independently produced) album, "Overflow", into the local market. An invitation was then extended to the band to attend the UK's 1998 Soul Survivor summer festival in Somerset, England. In addition, the band ended up featuring at the then popular Greenbelt festival held in Watford, England where they once again turned out to be the highlight of the event.

It was during these events that overseas record company executives from the UK, Europe and USA finally started taking notice of the band. Playing to capacity crowds, Tree were very well received by the local British audiences. Tree then accepted a deal from the UK's Kingsway Music and with a substantial budget in place, work on a new album began in South Africa in early 1999. Tree's first international album, '63', debuted in England in July 1999 - selling over 3000 copies within the first few days of release in the UK alone. To date Tree's albums are now distributed and released in 17 countries where they enjoy continual sales and airplay.

A more extensive tour of the UK summer festivals to promote the new album took place over the July/August 1999 period. At the end of 1999, the much-anticipated '63' was released in South Africa by Lush Records, and proceeded to garner favourable reviews throughout the music industry, a particularly notable achievement for a Christian band. In early February 2000, the president of InPop Records made a special trip out to South Africa to meet the band and catch their first live performance at the start of their S.A tour in support of the release of their new album, '63'. Finally after months of meetings and negotiations, and at the expense of InPop / EMI USA, the band flew out to Nashville on the 10th June 2000 to sign the deal. Tree now form part of the InPop Records family.

In the mean time, the bands first single, 'A Million Lights' off their new album, '63', has enjoyed a steady climb up 5fm's Top40 charts, where it peaked at No.2 in May 2000. The song has also reached no. 1 on various community, campus and Christian stations around the country, including Cape Town's KFM. The single is still currently climbing KZN's East Coast Radio Top 20. The follow-up single, "Stumbling Stone", is set to do the same, having already hit no.1 on East London's Link FM. '63' is now scheduled for a world-wide release in late October 2000, and the band will undertake a 6-8 week tour of the States during this period to promote the album. The band is then set to embark on a major 60-city tour of the States beginning in February 2001, supporting top US Christian band The Newsboys.

THE AMABOEKEBOEKE

Two of SA's foremost musicians, Koos Kombuis and Robin Auld, have just released their autobiographies. The Afrikaans singer-songwriter, author and cult icon, Koos Kombuis, is now settled in the Cape, and has finally produced 'Seks & Drugs & Boeremusiek' (See WOEMA review below), the long-awaited and definitive account of his life and musical career. His no-holds-barred account of his colourful history - from the age of five seconds (!) through his hedonistic youth, the Voëlvry days and his later, acclaimed musical career - is written in Afrikaans, but contains a large enough dose of his colloquial, slangy and 'alternatief' verbals to appeal to all his many adherents across the spectrum. The book is published by Human & Rousseau and is available at all decent book stores in SA as well as online (soon) at <http://www.oneworld.co.za> (Further info c/o mailto:jscholtz@humanrousseau.com)

Robin Auld is another well-known South African musician but not many fans are aware of his hidden writing talents. 'Tightlines', his new autobiography, covers fishing, music, friendships and culture. Playing in a band, dreaming of steenbras, a friend who goes AWOL, and a skop-skiet-en-donder ending in the Eastern Cape and life in sunny South Africa. Funny, yet not without insight, this book is an immensely enjoyable read. To purchase a copy (paper and e-books available) of 'Tight Lines', or to read a sample chapter online, try:

FRANK OPPERMAN AT THE TIN ROOF IN KNYSNA

I went to see the Frank Opperman Band at the Tin Roof in Knysna last week. I had heard that it was a rock band and was keen to hear how the guy from an Afrikaans TV series was going to perform on stage singing rock music.

The venue was small but perfect for the amount of people who turned out. Frank had a friend who did a 20 minute slot before the show, and set the mood for what was to come. When they started their gig which was one full set of 75 minutes, they began with a bang. All their music is original and to me it all sounded good enough to be marketed with anything on any radio station (SA music is right where it's at). There was a drum solo and a bass guitar solo which is something which was refreshing and good to see. Generally the music was easy to listen to and enjoy, even for a first time listener.

-----------------

ASHTON NYTE - THE SLENDER NUDES (Intervention Arts)
http://www.ashtonnyte.com

Glam Rock (still) Lives (in SA)! Ashton Nyte has been spearheading our local Goth movement for the past few years. As lead vocalist and inspiration behind the Pretoria-based outfit The Awakening, Nyte released two '90's albums - the debut album 'Risen' in 1997 and 'Request' in 1998. Now back with a new solo Glam image and appropriate, original material, Nyte will be displaying his new direction during a national tour during late July, culminating in an appearance at OppiKoppi in Northam in early August. (See "whats on" below).

The new album, 'The Slender Nudes', sounds like Ashton Nyte played his old Bowie albums over and over, probably watched the 'Velvet Goldmine' movie about 20 times and then produced this stunning album of new original songs in a glamorous style. It rocks, it struts, but most of all it glitters! (SS/BC)

THE JAYHAWKS - SMILE (Columbia/SonyMusic SA)

A superb album from American acoustic rockers The Jayhawks. Strong, sometimes romantic lyrics, great catchy tunes, excellent harmony vocals and some incredible guitaring, though I would have preferred even more guitar solos. Listen to this CD late at night with a special friend, and go ahead... smile. (BC)

VARIOUS ARTISTS - SHOWCASE 2 - the 5FM SA Singles Collection
(SonyMusic SA)

This is the second in the 'Showcase' series from Sony Music SA and 5FM. The first CD concentrated on SA bands of the 90s, this time the focus is on recent SA singles and is a wonderfully eclectic mixture of pop, rock, dance and reggae. Up step Sugardrive with their slow-burning 'Disco Lazarus', Springbok Nude Girls with 'Shot', the pick of the tracks off their recent 'Surpass The Powers' album, Fetish with 'Awkward', and hard-rocking newcomers Saron Gas with '69 Tea'. Boo! add their first major charter, 'Stagefright', Wonderboom are represented by the very strong 'Something Wrong' single, and Tananas contributed their remixed SA world dance classic, 'Seven (7 year itch shooz remix)'.

There are 16 tracks in all on this collection including 'I Love To Truck' by the Rasta Rebels, 'World' by 5FM DJs F and Martinengo (which samples the theme from Jeff Wayne's 'War Of The Worlds'), YaNaUmShayin' (Woman 2 Woman mix)', Derek "The Bandit" Richardson's Pure Bliss with 'Swim With The Dolphins', Foot C Foot C with a cover of the old Nancy Sinatra hit 'These Boots Are Made For Walking' and Heatseeker's smash hit 'Xplicit'. There are also worthy efforts from Karma ('One Day Soon'), Kaolin Thompson's Naked ('Dirty World') and the much-missed Amersham ('Time Alone').

'Showcase 2' is a worthwhile collection of the best of SA pop/rock on one CD, showcasing, as it does, the strength of the chart singles being produced locally. Hopefully these SA-only chart hit collections become even better and more frequent in the years to come. (SS/BC)

AFRICAN AWAKENING - BEST OF DAVID HEWITT (DGM)

Although recognized as one of South Africa's finest guitarists, David Hewitt's career has been severely curtailed due to his recent illness. Hewitt's record company, David Gresham Records, has therefore released this new 'Best Of (African Awakening)' collection featuring tracks drawn mainly from his two acclaimed albums, 'African Tapestry' and 'Storyteller'. Hewitt's virtuosity and wondrous ability to utilize both traditional and classic styles in his compositions, has ensured that his music is appreciated and enjoyed both in South Africa as well as internationally. The 16 tracks on this album were compiled by David Gresham and Allan Goldswain. (SS)

4.WOEMA: SEKS & DRUGS & BOEREMUSIEK

DISCO FEVER (GALLO, 1999)

Even if one did not care overmuch for disco, he or she should be able to find enough songs on this double CD to make at least a 90 minute tape. In Texas we spend much time in our cars so road tapes, for me anyway, are important. This is good music to use to thump one's way across Texas. When done South African style, and that's with a bit more rock thrown in, one wonders if the disco genre is undervalued. Here are the songs of Disco Fever: all disco or dance, though some do rock:

'Magic Carpet Ride' by Buffalo is a strong open, and in its way, "Ooh,
ooh, carpet ride!" is a fine basic rock lyric. Nice musical frills here, the song is imaginative despite the dominant disco beat that can easily become moronic if not decorated creatively, as it is here. I hear a couple of lyrics differently on the original, but this is really a strong song.

'Living for the City' by Disco Rock Machine is a nice disco-fied cover of Stevie Wonder's song, and one faithful enough to the original, yet different and so eminently danceable that I can imagine Stevie himself might like it.

'House of the Rising Sun' by Hot R.S. A good version of one of my favorite rock standards, though the young lady singing really over-emotes how glad she feels, and she carries on disturbing
the neighbors for quite a while.

'Hiroshima' by People Like Us has nice singing and is interesting
lyrically, more than I-love-you-baby lyrics, yet it is a more
straight-forward disco song than the first two songs on this double CD set.

'Eloise Concerto' by Rouge starts out as a readily recognizable disco
song, with horn accents, and moves into a looong and rather mellow
interlude. The song is pleasant, with several movements, and comes across more as listening disco than dancing disco. If I were to hear it in a club I might think differently, though. The pleasantness of the song is borne out by the fact that it does not seem to last 17 minutes and 32 seconds.

'Time of the Season' by Neil Cloud (Rabbitt's drummer) has the same eerie mood of the original, but with a more obvious beat. The original was a favorite song, this version is too.

'Living Inside My Head' by John Ireland is my favorite song on Disco
Fever. Maybe early in childhood I was entranced by 'Greensleeves', which I feel sure Henry the VIII did not write, despite his claim. Anyway, John Ireland does a much better job than Henry could have with this beautiful melody and original lyrics. Absolutely lovely.

'In-a-Gadda-da-Vida' by Hot R.S. rocks, or is it that maybe the original wasn't too far from being a disco number itself? Whichever the case, this is a good version of a classic song that everyone pokes fun at, but one which everyone knows nonetheless.

That's disc one, some good pure disco, and some disco with a definite
rock edge.

Disc two:
'You Really Got Me' by Disco Rock Machine (featuring Trevor Rabin) is only barely disco. It's disco in a hard rock mode, go-ahead rock with a cranking guitar. This is a loud disco cover of The Kinks song with a disco beat in the back and a wailing guitar up front in the lead.

Medley: 'Born to Be Wild', 'Gimmy Gimmy Good Lovin'', 'Mony Mony', and
'Born to Be Wild' by Buffalo works, flowing from one song to another.
Inspirational rock in that it lifts me up like good music is supposed to do. Nice and long at 14 minutes and 7 seconds, too.

Medley: 'The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly' and 'Reflections of My Life' by Neil Cloud also mixes different songs and it works, moving from the
universally known "Good, Bad, and Ugly" theme to lyrics of Marmalade's
reflective song to disco dance rhythm and back to the two pop songs -- it really works. Also nice and long at 17 minutes and thirty-eight seconds.

'Delta Queen' -- Another song with a vocal woman disturbing the
neighbors. This starts out dance-worthy with a nice yearning mood, then it mellows to become a softer disco song, with a build meant to symbolize something going on. This is a disco song of movements and parts, good to listen to aside from the young lady's histrionics, which in the song, as in real life, are distracting.

'Time to Love' by Disco Rock Machine is a good disco song with a moderate beat and some electronic fills. Pleasant and acceptable, but it doesn't really stand out.

'Give' by Harari is not what I'd call a disco song, but rather it is a
timeless dance number, and a catchy and good one. The few songs I've heard by Harari make me want to hear more.

'Money Runner' by Hot R.S. combines disco, horns, and hip lyrics in an
anthem to the almighty buck. This song has a driving tempo and in a club was likely to cause everybody to move in unison.

'Loving Styles' by Disco Rock Machine is a quirky song, slow in tempo
with a stop-start rhythm. While I can see where some might enthuse over
this one it's another that didn't hit me. It's not obvious disco, but
definitely a song to dance to. Okay, it has interesting guitar
extrapolations.

'Burn Out' by Sipho "Hotstix" Mabuse is a nice and gently chugging dance song, and another without the obvious disco beat. The melody and beat work precisely together here. The vocals carry the tune but are not dominant, they work with the instrumentation. A pretty song, appropriate for a closing set for lovers to dance close to before going home together.

My take on over 150 minutes of South African disco music, untinged by
nostalgia, is to wonder: can it be that South Africa improved on disco? I conclude: Yes.

About a third of the musical contents of these two discs is disco for rock fans, so rockified that one might ask, "Disco? What disco?"
Many of the songs are untypical of an undervalued genre. The couple of
songs that I didn't respond to as strongly as others most certainly don't detract from the whole. All in all, another case of my Dollars-into Rands being well-spent.

LOVE ATTACK - THE HELICOPTERS

This mid 80's album was a good example of the synthpop of the day. It features some great tunes, noteably "Mysteries & Jealousies", "Miles Apart" and "Only for You". With the exception of the latter, all the tracks are up tempo some almost reaching frantic pace. There is the occasional guitar workout and the electric drums feature quite prominantly on a lot of tracks. (Drums courtesy of a guy who lectured Law at Wits University, but whose name escapes me now) The closing track "Chased" cleverly opens with a synthesised "township" guitar sound, which is quite interesting.

Most of the songs are about that age old topic... love and although the back cover of the album features rose coloured spectacles, they usually deal with some of the realities of life & love. Songs like "Only For You" does occasionally become a little sentimental, but not enough so to distract one.

Bernard Binns' distinct vocal delivery completes the Helicopters sound of this album which if one was to be hyper critical does sound dated. However most of the synthpop from the 80s sounds dated now. This was one of the best of it's genre in South Africa.

CHARTING THE CHARTS

I have been looking into the artists who charted on the SPRINGBOK RADIO
SINGLES CHART from the period 1969 to 1975 (information courtesy of Kevin Farquharson from Pretoria). There are a number of artists with whom I am unfamiliar and I am wondering if they came from South Africa. They are NOT mentioned in the book on SA contemporary popular music by Garth Chilvers and Tom Jasiukowicz. If anyone is able to
assist me by confirming whether the artists were indeed from SA, I would appreciate the information. The artist's name and the title(s) of the hit single(s) involved and the hit year(s) are listed below:

AFTER ALL - If you need me / Help me, my love - 1974/75
the ARROWS - Touch too much - 1974
DELIVERANCE - Duelling Banjos - 1973
DENNIS - Joey the lipstick collector - 1971

Gries HEIMER - Bonely, bonela - 1972
JEROME - Nosy Rosie - 1971
JERONIMO - Heya - 1970
JOY - Apollo 100 - 1972 [Evidently NOT Joy of "Paradise Road" fame 1980]

Tommy OVERSTREET - Heaven is my woman's love - 1973/74
Stu PHILLIPS - Vin rose / Speak softly my love - 1969

WATERLOO - Rock 'n roll lullaby - 1972

Bobby WRIGHT - Seasons in the sun - 1974.

None of these artists is listed in the USA or UK singles chart books
covering the period 1969-1975.

In addition, I have a query relating to the AFRIKAANS language hits on the Springbok charts 1969-1975. If was common for afrikaans hits to be cover versions of original english hits. Can anyone tell me if the afrikaans hits listed below were cover versions of English original songs and, if so, which original songs/artists?

ANDRÉ - Ek is verlief op jou - 1972
Al DEBBO - Tantes van Nantes - 1970
Caroline DU PREEZ - Net soos ek die telefoon neersit - 1975

Many thanks in advance for any help you can give.

A SOUTH AFRICAN JAZZ DISCOGRAPHY?

Here in Leicester, UK, South African jazz is very popular amongst our local jazz musicians. This is largely the result of the availability here of Abdullah Ibrahim's records. However other musicians like Dudu Pukwana, Zacks Nkosi or Wilson Silgee seem to overlooked simply because their records are difficult to find. There must be plenty of exciting music locked away in the record companies vaults.

A discography of South African Jazz would at least give a guide to what might be available... has anyone made one?
It would be a useful tool in persuading the record companies to re-release the historic material they must have available.

I would welcome a chance to extend my collection of South African Jazz, so if there is anyone who has records (microgroove or 78) for sale please get in touch.

OPPIKOPPI
http://www.oppikoppi.co.za

3-6 August - Northam
11-13 August - Worcester

August in South Africa means OppiKoppi, and this year the biggest (and best?) SA music festival will not be restricted to its usual Bushveld location in Northam. Due to a large demand from the Cape fans, the OppiKoppi organizers have arranged for a scaled down version of the festival to be held on the weekend following the northern version. The festival planned for Worcester (one hour out of Cape Town), will be hosted at the "Kleinplasie" grounds and will be a slightly scaled down "highlights" package of the bushveld leg. At this point it is envisaged that three stages (as opposed to the normal five) will be the Mainstay Main stage, a Savanna Jazz & Progressive stage and an intimate acoustic stage. Similar to the bushveld event the scope and scale of the Worcester leg will be nurtured and expanded in future years.

The five stages at the Northern Province event are the Mainstay Main stage, The Gauloises "le Bleu" stage, The Tassenberg Acoustic and Dance stage and the Savanna Jazz & Blues stage. After the success of impromptu performance artists during the 1999 festival, the 2000 festival will also feature a brand new performance art area as well.

Confirmed acts for Northam are: Aavaaz, Absolute Zero, Adamu, Ashton Nyte, Bizarre Bazaar, Beeskraal, BVK, Boo!, Boomslang, Battery 9,Blk Sonshine, Blunted Stuntman & Skekrou, Bradley Bionic & The Chop Suey Crew, Bob & Al, Busi Mhlongo, Carlo Mombelli & The Prisoners of Strange(Featuring Johnny Fourie), Collosal Head, Citrus, Cut La Roc (U.K), Christo Strauss, Delta Blue, Dondo, Da Knott & Myles, Duusman, Fidget, Firing Squad, Fuzi Gish, Frank Opperman, Fruit Fly Navigators, Gloria Bosman, Groinchurn, Interzone, James Phillips 5 Year Tribute, Jaques du Preez, Jimmy 12", Jonathan Crossley, Kampi Moto, Kwassa Nkemba, Liela, Lilo, M, Mesadoth, Message, Michelle Constant, Moses Molelekwa, Music Ye Africa, Moodphase5ive, Nine, Niki Blumenfeld, Never Machine Forever, Not My Dog, OHM, Piet Botha, Ready D, Saron Gas, Selaelo Selota, S'bu, Soulwax (Pukkelpop, Belgium), Springbok Nude Girls, Sshhh......, Sugardrive & Plum (The Yang Circle), Sunways, Slugs Of War, Skeem, Starseed, Superjuice, Squeal, Stoff, Syd Kitchen, T!, Tidal Waves, Tim Parr, THC, The Kerels, Van der Want & Letcher, Voël, Valiant Swart, Vlakplaas, Waddy Jones (Project 2501), Wadee, Willem Fourie & The Lightning Brothers, Zita Swoon (Pukkelpop, Belgium)

It is also hoped that the new festival in the Cape will go a long way towards creating a high quality sustainable festival circuit in Southern Africa, which is one of the express aims of Carl Hoffman and the Oppikoppi organization. Now in its 6th year, OppiKoppi has grown in size and scope to become one of the most relevant and cutting edge showcases of mainly South African music. Moving from a rock based start the festival has grown to incorporate a wide array of music including, rock, jazz, dance, world, cabaret, folk, acoustic and traditional music as well as late night DJ'ing. The diverse nature of the festival has resulted in thousands of music lovers of all descriptions flocking to the festival as an almost spiritual (Glastonbury-type) annual pilgrimage.

The confirmed acts for the Worcester leg are: Aavaaz, Adamu, Black Milk, Boo!, Blues Broers, B.D.I, Blk. Sonshine, Blunted Stuntman, Brasse Vannie Kaap, Carlo Mombelli & The Prisoners of Strange (Featuring Johnny Fourie), Copious, Cut La Roc (U.K), Cape Comedy Collective, Delta Blue, Duusman, Errol Dyers, Firing Squad, Frank Opperman, Frosted Orange, Groinchurn, Gurkha, Heel Art Collective, Interzone, James Phillips 5 Year Tribute, Jaques du Preez, Jack Hammer, Jo Rowlands Band, K*A*A*S, Krushed & Sorted, Liela, Madame Freak, Mung, Not My Dog, Phambili, Paul Hanmer, Piet Botha, Quake + Spekta, Rosswell Kings, Robin Auld, Ready D, Springbok Nude Girls, Spinnekop, Suda, THC, The Cusp, Tidal Waves, Tim Parr, Valiant Swart, Vusi Mahlasela, Van der Want & Letcher, Wonderboom.
