STRUTTER'ZINE INTERVIEWS OFF THE EDGE
This interview first appeared on the Strutter'zine website <http://www.angelfire.com/ma/strutteraor> and is reprinted here with the kind permission of Strutter'zine editor, Gabor Kleinbloesem.
OFF THE EDGE from South Africa is a great female fronted melodic rockband that put out 3 albums so far. This band is actually quite sensational, and therefore I had to interview them, here's what bandleader Peter Hamner (guitars) had to say...
Strutter'zine: When did you form OFF THE EDGE?
Peter Hanmer: Off the Edge was formed in 1983, after the demise of BOSS (Heavy metal band playing original music).
S: Did any of you do something musically before OFF THE EDGE?
P: I played guitar for the heavy metal band BOSS, along with Tony on bass.
S: Your debut from 1983 was very AOR/Pomp/Melodic Rock based, which bands influenced you?
P: Tony and I were heavily influenced by bands like BOSTON, HEART, etc. I think that the album that had the most influence on me was that first BOSTON album.
S: Also tell me more about that debut and its songs?
P: The first OFF THE EDGE album was merely a means of Tony and I being able to put our songs down permanently. Most of these songs were written by Tony and I while we were in BOSS. The album was never released and we only ever pressed 300 vinyl copies. The copies were given to friends and fans of BOSS as a means of remembering the band after it broke up. There were three drummers on that album because we just invited friends to come and play on it. They would come and play when they were available. The one drummer (Ingrid Herbst) that played on the album was from the all girl band CLOUT.
S: Your band didn't feature the female lead vocalist we heard on the later albums, how come?
P: I only met up with Judy in 1998 when we were filming a music video of the band that she was singing with at the time. I remember being very impressed with her at the time.
S: Did you had much success with your debut back then?
P: The only success that we had with that first album was that we did get playlisted on national radio. There was no actual band though. OFF THE EDGE just consisted of Tony and I with a few guest musicians. Eventually Dave Sharp did join briefly and we recorded the two tracks that can be found on the CD version of the first album. Initially Dave was just a guest artist.
S: What happened after the release with OFF THE EDGE?
P: After the release of OFF THE EDGE Tony was interviewed on national radio and we found ourselves being played on radio.
S: Did you do anything else musically between the debut and the second album of OFF THE EDGE.
P: I played for numerous club bands playing cover songs. I also lost contact with Tony. We did continue writing songs, but not together. At this stage I didn't have any plans to record again. Tony also played in various cover bands.
S: After many years you finally released a follow-up to the early 80s record, how come it took so long and also why did you recruit a new (female) vocalist?
P: In 1998 I finally gave up playing the various club circuits due to a change in career. The change in career meant setting up my own small studio at home to write and record music for multimedia CD Rom production. Once I was up and running I started thinking about recording some of the songs that I had written. I also wanted to re-record some of the songs on that first album because I didn't think that we had done them justice the first time around. I was very happy with the results and by chance I happened to link up with Tony again. He was very interested in what I was doing and suggested that we look at recording another OFF THE EDGE album.
The only problem was that he now lives in Cape Town (about 1400km away) and I live in Johannesburg. We then worked out that I could prepare all of the songs and he would fly up periodicly to record his parts. It worked out quite well except that when it came to singing some of the songs we found that sixteen years later he didn't have the range that he once had. We realised that we would have to find a female vocalist because of Tony's high voice. I then remembered Judy. She was no longer singing with anybody and expressed an interest in being involved. Judy came in and finished the songs that we hadn't completed.
S: Music styles come and go, but you are still offering the quality melodic rock of the 80s, I am really glad to hear your music, but do you think there's still a market for this type of music (especially South Africa is not really the place to be for melodic rock)?
P: I actually don't care whether there is a market out there or not. We record the music because that's the music that we enjoy listening to. We have no aspirations of selling millions of CDs or anything like that. We are doing this as a hobby. We can't do anything more because of the logistics involved. South Africa is definitely not the place to be for melodic rock.
S: How is the scene actually for melodic rock in South Africa (and how was the past?)
P: I wouldn't say that there is no interest in melodic rock, but it is definitely in the minority. It has never been great but there is a very loyal following by a very small group of people. You won't hear much on radio stations and if you do, it's usually the old standards. ('More than a feeling', etc)
S: You just released a new CD, can you tell me everything about it?
P: The new CD is entitled 'Just Another Band' and the title reflects the way that this type of music is regarded in this country. It consists of seven vocal tracks and three instrumentals. The three instrumentals were influenced by bands such as Camel, The Alan Parsons Project etc. The seven vocal tracks were all sung by Judy this time and range from SANTANA Influences to BOSTON, RTZ, etc. There is one particular song on the album about a church in the city of Grahamstown, South Africa. There is a statue of an angel outside the church that overlooks the church. At night the statue casts a shadow through the stained glass windows onto the walls inside the church. This song tells the whole story.
S: What are the plans for the future, any touring plans, and maybe try to break out of South Africa and get more known in Europe and The States.
P: Plans for the future depend on whether we are able to sell enough copies to pay for the next album. All three of the albums were funded by the band and each new album depends on the sales of the previous album. We never expected to sell enough copies of 'On The Run' (second album) but because we were fortunate enough to sell those CDs we could record 'Just Another Band'. We only have a few albums of 'On The Run' available. We have started to record the fourth album. There are no touring plans, but we would love to get a little more exposure as far as the CD is concerned in Europe and the States.
S: How can people outside South Africa get your CDs, and finally, do you have anything to add to our readers?
P: People can order our CDs from our website at: http://rock.co.za/offtheedge (or from One World <http://www.oneworld.co.za>). It really is refreshing to see how much support there is out there for melodic rock in Europe and the States. To everybody in Europe, thanks for your support and keep visiting our website for the latest news.

2.ON STAGE
------------
WINSTON STATE OF THE NATION - THE CAPE TOWN LEG
Credit to the organizers and sponsors of this event who spared no
expense or effort to ensure the success of this showcasing of the hottest acts in SA pop/rock. A big raspberry to all those SA music fans who didn't pitch up to support these bands. The first concert in Cape Town only managed to draw approximately 2000 punters and the Three Arts Theatre in Plumstead was looking a little cavernous when Semisane opened proceedings with a short but extremely promising set. The songs on their recently released debut album, 'A Life Less Strange', are a little too soft and sugar-coated, but onstage the band displayed a hard and confident rock sound and image. Vocalist Tikara took a while to settle down and find her softish vocals in the mix. It must have been daunting, and very disappointing, to play for such a small crowd. But Semisane shrugged off those minor hassles, gave of their best and generally impressed.
Next up were Sons Of Trout who always look like they are having far more fun then their audience. This six-piece assortment of flying dreads, unsubtle brass and manic dancing failed to ignite the crowd due mainly to their jerky arrangements of energetic but mostly tuneless songs. They played in front of a video screen which interspersed weird fish images with old South African riot footage, but their songs didn't add anything special. Nine appeared next with their experimental hybrid of hip hop, rock, thumping noise and generally indecipherable lyrics.
The crowd was getting edgy but hopes leapt as Sugardrive hit the stage.
But Paul E Flynn and the boys kept the mood funereal with some
completely inappropriate slow-burning ballads and tedious rock noises
and poses. On a 5FM interview later in the week, the band admitted that
it had not been one of their better performances. Got that right!
Fortunately they redeemed their set with some decent versions of their
better stuff - 'I Love You Discuss', 'Disco Lazarus', '35 Mil', and the
powerful closer we (um, I) had been yelling for, the wonderful 'Road'
off their 'Sand. Man. Sky.' album.
By now the crowd had swelled a little and Fetish received their usual
ecstatic welcome. Michelle Breeze's charismatic frontpersonship {Is that a word? - Ed.} continues to impress and the boys in the band add
sparkling touches to her introspective lyrics. Once again it was down to them and then Springbok Nude Girls to re-enhance SA Rock's reputation.
The Nude Girls were clearly disappointed at the small crowd but belted
out an enthusiastic and polished performance regardless. Hot new DJ,
Ready D closed off, adding a funkier, dancier, hip hop element to an
otherwise straight forward, and not that impressive, SA rock event. On
the basis of this display, we wouldn't win the bid to stage the World
Music Cup either! (SS)

3.NEW RELEASES
-----------------
David Gray - White Ladder
It took a while to get here, on a local pressing, but White Ladder is
now on the SA CD shelves and ready to spread its magic across our land.
Welshman David Grays third album was initially only released in Ireland in early 99. By the end of the year it had scooped many of the Irish medias "Best Album" awards and David Gray had, eventually, arrived.
There have been no sightings of his first album, but A Century Ends
popped up in a bargain bin and had a few strong folk-rock moments that
hinted at Grays ability to casually deliver gravelly, emotional vocals
and lyrics, and great tunes.
There are 11 songs on 'White Ladder', although first single Babylon
re-appears as Babylon II at the end of the album. This Years Love
featured in the soundtrack to the film of the same name and helped raise Grays profile in England. But this is not a singles/chart album, it is a slow-burning, complete album with its own relaxed pace and feel. A happier Leonard Cohen, a sweeter-voiced Dylan, a younger Van Morrison.
That good, but not similar to any of them, except on his only cover, a
longer, rambling, folked-up version of Mark Almond/Soft Cells Say
Hello Wave Goodbye that drifts temporarily into the lyrics and vocal
style of Van Morrisons Into The Mystic. Its his nod to the past, to
his musical journey and to the work of his heroes and influences. But
this is a fresh and individual achievement from David Gray, hopefully
its not too good to repeat. (10) (SS)

4.CLASSIC ROCK
-----------------
THE WARRIOR - IPI 'N TOMBIA featuring Margaret Singana
I first read about this album on the SA Rock Legends website, but it was when SA Rock Digest reader Kim in Hawaii wrote in to say that she was looking for it and I found 2 copies in London that I got to hear it. I bought 1 copy for her and one for myself.
It may be somewhat heretical to say that I was somewhat disappointed by the Margaret Singana collection Lady Africa, but having first bought and listened to 'The Warrior' by Ipi 'N Tombia featuring Margaret on vocals, I always felt it would be difficult to better this. (That said, 'Lady Africa' does have some brilliant moments and is well worth owning).
From the opening drumbeats of 'The Warrior' you are encaptured by a sound that does well to capture the vastness, mystery and beauty of Africa. As the sleeve notes say, the style of songs range "from Traditional Folklore to the more modern Township Jive", mixing in a modern rock beat to create a collection of great African Rock tunes.
There is a stong political commentary on track like 'The Warrior' (about the Battle of Bloodriver between the Boers and the Zulu) and 'The Digger' in which a mine labourer laments the fact that despite working all his life he has nothing to pass on to his son.
These more serious tracks are offset by the upbeat celebrations of life in 'Mama Tembu's Wedding' and 'Soweto by Night'. 'Mama Tembu' should be familiar to most South Africans and the more mature version is one of the highlights of the 'Lady Africa' collection. With it's upbeat rhythms, jangling "Township" guitars and vocal clicks it's the kind of song that if you can't dance to it, you must be nailed to the floor.
What is perhaps the most striking thing about this album, however is the vocals of Singana. The clarity and strength of her voice make her the star of the show. There is something special about her voice that compliments the music perfectly. It is the sound of a confident young woman giving her all. This is especially shown on tracks such as the title track and 'Ipi 'N Tombia' (translated as where is/are the girl(s) if my smattering of Zulu serves me correctly), while 'Mother Mary' finds her in a more spiritual voice which she handles with maturity.
The synergy of this collection of great tunes and brilliant vocal performances is completed by producers Billy Forrest and Lofty Shultz, creating this essential South African gem which gained it an international release. Thanks Brian & Kim for introducing me to this special album.

SURF GUITAR
The years 1956 to 1966
Amidst the alternative nineties came forth tasty siblings of grinding axe guitar through the likes of Quinton Tarrantino's 'Pulp Fiction' soundtrack and Antonio Banderos's 'Desperado'. Who would have thought that the revival of Surf Guitar would forge its way into the millennium when music had anaesthetised into the rhythms of ambient and techno. Thanks to Bob Keane, president of Del-fi records, many of these rare musical gems have been released on CD. In the year of our Lord 1957, Link Wray signalled the birth of the power chord, commonly known as the D-cord with a guitar riff known as a stroll. It was back in Fredericksburg, Virginia that this riff, entitled Rumble hit the charts. Nothing like this had ever been committed to wax. The stinging fuzz effect was so overwhelming that the instrumental was banned for being too suggestive. Link Wray, half Indian, proceeded to gather a motley crew of musicians known as the Wraymen. Like those who roam the globe for a perfect wave, twang rang 'round the world.
Yet the roots of Surf Guitar lie in Boston, Massachusetts 1956 with the likes of Dick Dale and the Del-tones. It was here in the flurry of Dick Dale that a very young Jimi Hendrix showed up at his gigs to watch this half-Polish guitarist grind into exotic instrumentals, playing with his teeth and behind his head. Although this was old hat to the likes of T-bone Walker, the energy and charisma of Dick Dale was enough to inspire even the most insipid of aspiring axemen. Without a doubt Dick Dale is the unchallenged Surf Guitar king who started it all. To complement the author of twang, Jimi Hendrix dedicated 'Third Stone from the Sun', to Dick Dale after hearing that he was ailing with cancer. Thus the words 'Surf Guitar is dead' was uttered by Hendrix during this guitar instrumental. Across the waters Cliff Richard and the Drifters, later to be know as The Shadows, would shatter the British invasion with a Fender shaped heart.

Artists:

The Ventures
The Challengers
The Marketts
The Lively Ones
Link Wray and the Wraymen
Davey Allen and the Arrows
The Shadows
Booker T and the MG's (the Memphis sound)
Steve Cropper
Surfs Up (Session Musicians featuring Phil Spector's Wrecking Crew: Carol Kaye - Bass, Hal Blaine - Drums, Bill Strange - guitar)
Dick Dale and the Del-tones (king of the surf guitar) 2CD set
Interesting pointers:
Duane Eddy. Commonly known as the king of twang guitar. Gained recognition due to the twang echo that reverberated from his guitar while recording in empty grain silos and large bathtubs. In one sense the most commercial and highly overrated.
The Ventures. Although often referred to as the poor man's Shadows, Gerry McGee was no imitator and years later was to play alongside Eric Clapton who said of McGee, "There's a guitarist to contend with." It was the blues grandfather, John Mayall that snapped up Gerry for one of his earlier Blues Breaker experiments. (Of note the album 'Underground Fire', check out 'Sunshine Of Your Love' and 'The Weight'.)
Hank B Marvin. His debut album 'Would you Believe it' is somewhat unique in its style of guitar expression due to the fact that controversy reigns regarding whether he played a Telecaster or a Strat. Hank was desperately trying to capture the sound of James Burton and its quite evident that this particular album has a different tone reverb to the usual Shadows release. The most esoteric of Hank B. Marvin's releases and no matter what instrument was played, it excels all releases previous and after.
The Marketts. Of note that the session musicians behind this band were Bill Strange, lead guitar, Carol Kaye, bass guitar and drums Hal Blaine. (Phil Spectors Wrecking crew.)
Other Surf Guitar bands:
Bruce Johnston, who introduced the original surfer stomp.
The Centurians
The Surftones (Dave Myers)
The Sentinals
The Surfaris
The Impacts
The Bobby Fuller Four
The Moongooners
The Truants
The Gonzos
True to say that in the mid seventies a number of Punk bands combined the Surf Guitar sound with their own thrashing and wailing of suicide sound. Needless to say this ended dramatically in 1980. With hope and the advent of the generation-X we may yet see a Britpop band attempt this unique style of guitar expression.

9.GOOSEBUMPS
-----------------
GIMME YOUR LOVE - MARGARET SINGANA
Slow, powerful, epic, stunning...
Goosebumps galore as Margaret's voice soars above the almost chanted chorus of "Gimme your love". Written by Patric van Blerk and Allan Goldberg and recorded in 1972, this track has a timeless quality. Available on the 'Lady Africa' compilation CD from One World http://www.oneworld.co.za

What magical music moment gives you goosebumps? It could be song, an album, a live performance or even just the intro riff of your favourite song ('Smoke On The Water', anyone?).
E-mail us and tell us about your goosebump moment.
