Last Wednesday morning (23 February) at 10.15am, SAFM featured a 15 minute phone-in interview with Digest co-editor, Stephen "Sugar" Segerman.
This will become a regular Wednesday morning feature on Bruce Millar's programme, so listen out between 10 and 10.30am on 104-107KHz for the lastest music news and breaking stories.

SOUTHERN CROSS FOLK & ROCK FESTIVAL - MARCH 24 - 26, 2000
After the enormous success of the 1999 pilot event, this year’s Southern Cross Folk & Rock festival once again puts the emphasis on “family weekend”.
For the music lovers, the Carling Black Label stage will showcase some of the best-loved and hardest-working bands in the country.
The internationally renowned Shawn Phillips kicks off his SA tour at the Southern Cross Festival, and will headline the show on Friday night (solo) and Saturday night (with USA hotshot guitarist Van Wilks).
Ginger Baker and his new SA band will be performing their debut gig on Saturday night.
5FM’s Barney Simon, one of the most consistent and effective champions of South African music, will be your MC for the weekend.
“The venue boasts a natural amphitheatre surrounded by koppies and mountains,” says festival organiser, Zeta Roberts. “The acoustics are absolutely perfect.”
But there’s more to the festival than the music.
For the energetic, there will be mountain climbing, abseiling and archery, supervised by the Mountain Club of SA (look for the Adventure Educators tent). The Fly Fishing Association will be holding workshops (enquire at the Fly Fishers Association tent). The Microlight Association of Natal will be bringing 40 microlights to the festival, offering flips and doing displays. The Mooi River, which meanders through the property, is pretty full at the moment, so the adrenalin junkies can go tubing down the rapids. Early morning or late evening game viewing at the Zulu Farms Game Park can be arranged, (book at the festival info tent), and there will be pony and tractor-trailer rides for the youngsters, as well as a fully supervised crèche.
The camping facilities include plenty of flushing toilets and hot showers, food and flea market stalls, a wine & malt bar / beer tent. Limited spirits will be available.
Security and paramedics will be on duty 24-hours a day. There will be Telkom card phones, and Vodacom cell coverage.
Tickets at R190 per person are available from TicketWeb and at the festival gate.
Entry is free to children under 16 accompanying their parents. Concessions apply to block bookings and Folk Club members.

Also, regarding 'The Best of Bright Blue"... I would sure hate for anything to compromise the integrity of the 'Rising Tide' album... IMHO, it should be re-released intact... everything is perfect! A real jewel in South Africa's musical crown, if you will. The ONLY change I could even imagine would be to change the title to 'Weeping' -- might help move a few more copies, and it would be a fitting tribute to that glorious song.
However, dammit, a keyboard player made off with my cassette copy a few years back (but luckily I've still got all the lyrics, so I can still strum & sing them). Even Danny Heymann wasn't able to dig up a copy for me! I will, without a doubt, buy a 'real' copy of WHATEVER is released by Bright Blue in the future.
The *other* "jewel in SA's crown", IMHO, is Jennifer Ferguson's work... I took about 14 of the tracks from her two CDs and put them on one FANTASTIC CD... (Got rid of the dated-sounding stuff-- i.e., the 80's guitar sounding songs, NOT the political content). What a SHAME for the world not to know her...

GRAMMYS AND GRANDPAS
Given that the Grammies, like TV in general, has usually been somewhat of an embarrassment to the rock, folk/roots & jazz music professions over the past 30 odd years - one can only say Good one Carlos - at last!
Now wouldn't it be wonderful if this week's commercial record industry triumph in the USA could impact on our own incestuous record industry awards? Experienced (I didn't say older) Musicians don't have to have a fixed sell by date - when they're dead!
If the local record industry could see the value in some of the more experienced (I didn't say older) rockers & instead of rehashing volumes of dated recordings, encourage them to play & work again. If the record industry weren't so pre-occupied with imported international youth market trends & research, they too may have noticed that the age & generation gaps in contemporary music disappeared many years ago - in this country as well. Unfortunately, many of our great (and popular) musicians never made it anywhere near the mainstream.... precisely why it would be a mark of respect if we could get some of the older (performing) musicians into recording studios (the SABC?) and on the road again. The Hidden Years Music Archive Project hopes to try.... with many magic moments - yet to be revealed & created. Watch this little piece of space! The Hidden Years Website is under construction.
Somehow though I can't help but wax cynical - Have the Grammies (recently) become all planned & plotted by a bunch of marauding USA corporate (record industry) cowboys? Those who can afford to speak in volumes and fork tongue - not only to give the Grammy some rocking chair respectability (Bob Dylan in 1999? Who Next?) but a few billion bucks can be made on the side, quickly? All I can say is thank goodness - it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy than Carlos Santana. However, watch out! 'Supernatural' may just be played to death.

There have been a few mentions of the band Oom in recent-ish rock digests (No's 31, 34 & 36). Most revolve around their album available on http://www.mp3.com called 'No Loitering' and in particular the track 'Whito Kwaito'. I have just purchased the album from mp3.com and the only negative thing I can say about it is it's too bloody short. As the blurb mentions one should think what it would sound like if Madness or the Specials discovered Kwaito. This is a really cool album and I think it's virtues should be expounded to all and sundry. If you don't believe me check it out at www.mp3.com where you can listen to it before you buy. I believe that the guy who used to run Street Records opposite Wits University is in the group, but have not been able to confirm that for certain. Other than a bit of background at http://www.tequila.co.za, the group seem to be faceless and very little info available about them. Perhaps a Rock Digest reader can enlighten us a bit more about this excellent group.

ROCK ARCHIVE CD-ROM
This CD-Rom is chock-full of album info and track listings for almost any pop, folk, soul and rock album you can think of between 1950-1996 (and a large number you probably can't think of!). It really does cover from Abba to Zappa (in fact A2L to ZZ Top) with almost 80 000 albums (including some bootlegs) listed - most with full track and musician info and years of release.
Unfortunately no cover pics, but you can't have everything! This CD-Rom comes from Europe so it doesn't really cover SA bands, though I did find Freedoms Children 'Astra', Johnny Clegg and Clout among the archives.
Any album, song, musician or year can be searched for, quickly and accurately. Label and catalogue numbers are also included.

USA FOR AFRICA
Once again, South African music satisfies. I received Sugardrive's 'Sand.Man.Sky', Springbok Nude Girl's 'Afterlifesatisfaction', Squeal's 'Man and Woman', Rodriguez's 'Live Fact', and Koos Kombuis's 'Madiba Bay' Box Set. I can tell that 'Sand.Man.Sky' is one of those albums that will need a few listens to sink in. 'Afterlifesatisfaction' starts off in-yer-face but goes on to contain musical variety. 'Man and Woman' is wonderful guitar rock -- stand-out tracks after one listen: 'Man and Woman' and 'Long Pig'. The live set of Rodriguez is great stuff, real concert feel (wish I'd been there). 'Madiba Bay' is great folk and rock with SA insights for me, as expected.

This email is only relevant in you know of a saxophone player called
Mike Faure who I think was fairly well known in Jo-Burg jazz scene a
few years back, if not then please disregard this and I am sorry for
wasting time.
God knows how I found this site but anyway here goes (a bit of a long
story) my dad Duncan Carson was great friend of Mike and Ken Faure
of whom we last saw in Dec 1989 at Mikes home in Jo-Burg when we where out in SA on holiday from Scotland. My Dad and Mike go way back to the late 60`s as far as I know, like Mike my dad was a jazz musician.
Is Mike still doing the rounds, I had a look around this and could not
find anything on Mike as I know he had released records in the past.
He gave me an album of his after I told him that I listened to fusion
and the likes of Lee Ritenour, Bob James, Stealy Dan, Gino Vannelli
and so on.
I would be grateful for any info.
