Steel-string guitar maestro, Tony Cox, has released his new album, 'Matabele Ants' on the Sheer Sound label, and has announced a string of dates to promote this album. On the first leg of the tour, Cox will be accompanied by Tananas guitarist Steve Newman, while percussionist Barry van Zyl will join him for the second leg in January.

That unique blonde violinist (viola-nist?) who first appeared in the Durban outfit Urban Creep, is back. Brendan Jury spent most of the past few years working with Warrick Sony on their Trans.Sky project. The resulting album, 'Killing Time', was critically received but not as commercially successful as was hoped or imagined. Now Jury has linked up with Gaston Goliath (drums), Sven Mcalpine (bass and vocals), and Andre O (guitars) to forge a more rocky return to the later 'Tightrope'-era Urban Creep sound. The eleven tracks include extra remixes of the songs 'Dissolve' and 'Julia' and are all hard-edged power pieces with Jury's strings adding eastern touches to the thundering rhythm section and squealing guitars. Recommended.

NIBS VAN DER SPUY - LINES ON MY FACE
After spreading his talents around group ventures such as the culty Landscape Prayers, Nibs van der Spuy has finally decided to do his own solo thing and this sparkling folky collection is the welcome result. Nibs wrote most of these songs and his mastery of the guitar shines throughout. The covers here include Duanne Allman's 'Little Martha', Steve Morse's 'Modoc', and 'Road' by Nick Drake. Nibs also called in a bunch of his favourite SA musicians, including Chris Letcher, Ken E Henson, Nux Schwartz and Bruce Baker, to add the final touches to what is a gentle and evocative collection in the honoured tradition of the aforementioned Nick Drake and Leo Kottke.

UP THE CREEK
Sue Hardy advises that the Up The Creek Music Festival is taking place on the last weekend of February this year, 25 - 27 Feb 2000.
There are about 16 different bands playing throughout the weekend from Friday to Sunday and all the music on Saturday afternoon is going to be unplugged down on the banks of the river. Going to be an excellent festival!

EMERGING SOUNDS
The RP Studios Emerging Sounds Competition starts at Morgan's Cat at the Randburg Waterfront on Sunday, February 6 and is open to all unsigned bands.
This competition ends on Sunday, May 28.
During February, March and April the first round heats take place every Sunday. Then there will be three semi-finals culminating in the finals on May 28.
RP Studios is sponsoring recording time for the top three bands in the competition. The winning band wins three days in RP Studios M3 and two days mixing time in RP Studios M2. The winning band as well as receiving free studio time will also not have to pay for a sound engineer as Evert de Munnik is sponsoring his time to engineer and produce the band whilst they are in RP Studios.
Evert is the sound engineer on the 5FM/TDK Radio Sessions and has over 15 years experience in the industry.
Second placed band wins two days recording time in RP Studios M3 and one day mixing in RP Studios M2. This band will also not have to pay for an engineer, as Neal Snyman is sponsoring his time as the engineer. Neal has also worked on the 5FM/TDK Radio Sessions as well as recording a host of top South African bands.
Third place is a day in RP Studios M3 where a band has the opportunity of recording a demo. This band will have to pay for their engineer.
Bands who get through to the finals will also have the opportunity of performing on the radio sessions, which are aired on 5FM every Tuesday night between 23:30 and 24:00.
The rules of the competition are as follows: each band performs six songs, four of these in their own original style. One of these songs is then repeated a second time but this time round the band must incorporate a musical instrument they do not normally use in their original version. Bands can use a guest musician. Then the band must also perform a cover of a well-known SA pop/rock song, but in their own unique style.

SLAVE TO THE RHYTHM
I am an English Lucky Dube fan and am trying to find out what has happened to his original band, The Slaves. I did read once that they were now calling themselves "Free at Last" but have seen nothing since to substantiate this. Also, although a member of the Lucky Dube fan club, no mention was ever made in the newsletters that The Slaves had left him, so I guess the split was not amicable. The first we knew of the split was in 1996, I think, when Lucky performed in this country and he had a complete new band with him.

TDK 5FM RADIO SESSIONS
I live in Pietermaritzburg in SA and am really into SA rock. I have been following the TDK 5fm Radio Sessions almost religiously since they started and have really had my eyes opened to the amount of good musicians and bands there are in the country at the moment.
My problem is that there are a few that I have missed and I'm looking for anyone out there who may have them on cassette or preferably down loaded from the 5fm site and saved on their hard drives. The bands I'm looking for are: Just Jinger, Sugardrive, Henry Ate/Karma, The Led, Sublemon, and a few others which I can't remember right now.

Does anybody out there have any idea where Dave Mason (bagpipe artist!) has disappeared to? He was last seen in Underberg (Drakensberg-Natal) playing his pipes in the mountains at Splashy Fen.... he sort of disappeared after that to the UK (I think) and I would really appreciate it if anybody could contact me re: his whereabouts. THE BOYS
Don't know if you can help - where's Nick Killian (Rowlands) lead-guitarist for the Boys Band - Witbank (yes I said Witbank) 1962 to 1964? Nick went on to front some top local Bands - (Birds of a Feather etc). Left hand guitarist with one of the first Vox AC-30's in the country - and I mean 'in the country (Witbank), not in the Cities.

I've heard of 5FM before, in fact I love tuning in to 5FM on the
Internet whenever I can (that's assuming that their server is not too
busy, like it sometimes is). I understand that 5FM was originally
called "LM Radio" until the SABC acquired it and re-launched it as
Radio 5 in 1975. But I would be very interested in finding out more
about the history of LM Radio, how it got started, who ran it

REMEMBER THE ROCK
I once bought a Kenny Henson solo album called I think "Man Becomes Man" for R1 in 1978-9. It also features Ramsey Mackay in a brief sermon and the biblical slant of the album was due to the World Council of Churches sponsorship. The music is a of a "Tubular Bells" type instrumental and it is spooky in the extreme with a wailing female ending the preceedings.
As I have left SA, I doubt if I will ever be able to replace my cassette copy of it. I once saw Hawk live with the Israeli group Jericho at Durban's Kings Park. Jericho were impressive live, but Hawk impressed me even more, they had managed to improve on Africa She Too Can Cry.
After almost 25 years of trying I found a CD of Astra in London. I was none too pleased at the mono recording and gave it away in disgust. A year later I bought the stereo cleaned up release from Germany. Now I am content though last year I bought a vinyl copy of GALACTIC VIBES and what a waste of money (£25).
Anyway keep up the good work, I haven't read all of your websites but I wonder if Duncan Mackay's VISA was released in SA.

SHARP CUTS
'Sharp Cuts 2' is a nice compilation, rocks harder than #1, which had more cuts of interesting dance and synth music of the era. I'm a Falling Mirror fan for sure -- I don't know what I expected 'Making Out With Granny' to be but it is not what I expected. I'll be buying 'Zen Boulders' and whatever else by Mirror and Faull is re-released in 2000.

Speaking of 'Sharp Cuts #1', I have been meaning to tell you that I had a sudden pang of frustration that SA musos must have often. I was listening to 'Mysteries and Jealosies' (by the Helicopters) a while back and I was stuck with the fact that here was a perfectly excellent tune, you can dance to it, the melody sticks in my head, I give it a 10 as they used to say on Dick Clark's American Bandstand show about a song's dance-ability, it is perfectly in keeping with the radio style of its day, and yet it was not picked up for UK or USA release. I felt the frustration in small degree SA musicians must feel, to work so hard and create something so perfectly hit-worthy, and to succeed with it in one's own country, but not far beyond.

STEVE HOWELLS
As my first contribution of this year I feel I should publicly thank Steve Howells.
Steve was the drummer in the Asylum Kids (unbeknown to me). My ramblings and constant whining about the disappearance of the Dynamics brought me an email from Steve, who also just happened to be the drummer in the Dynamics who I had seen at the Market in JHB banging on drums with skins so knackered that they were held together (literally) with tape. He'd read my messages in the digest.
What a gent he is. Not only did he update me totally on the Dynamics
position (ie they made a demo tape prior to their debut album 'Switch it on and Wind it up', they reformed in 1996 and produced 'Organic' but sadly split up afterwards), but after exchanging a couple of mails, guess what! He only went and sent me a copy of the Organic CD along with a copy of the tape with some additional tracks on plus a few photos. All the way from Guam where he now lives with his wife Heather who featured on sax on the Organic album.
I haven't asked him if he minds me painting a glowing picture of him in this way, but I feel people should know that SA artistes are nothing like the Michael Jacksons and Princes of the world, wrapped up in their own false image of self importance. They are clearly real people who care about the fans they may have unwittingly picked up along the way.
Steve may not count himself amongst the world's music icons, but take it from me, every beat of the drum I hear when I play the albums turns me into a little kid when I think that the man himself gave me the CD!
Good on yer Steve, and thanks again mate. I'll be in touch for sure...

How to get good CD-R sound from old records

Introduction
Many favourite old albums have so far not appeared on Compact Disc. At least not in the legal way. In some cases the reason is as simple as it is sad. The master tapes are lost. The world's record companies are not exactly paragons of efficient archiving. However in more extreme cases the master tapes were lost in a record factory fire.
Compact Disc Mastering
When releasing older music on Compact Disc the record company should always use the original master tape as it was when it came out of the recording studio. When this is not possible alternative sources must be found. Perhaps safety copies or production copies could be used. It's possible copy tapes were exported for record production in other countries.
When all else fails:
When it appears absolutely impossible to locate useful tapes, the last resort is to use records from which to make the CD. To all music lovers continually striving for acoustically perfect reproduction this sounds like sacrilege, but sometimes there just isn't any other way. At the very start of compact disc manufacture in the early eighties this was sometimes even done serruptitiously for regular releases, in order to save time.
The source
It would seem obvious that the cleanest possible record should be used. Sometimes records were released both in a stereo and in a mono version. Sometimes songs were abbreviated in later pressings. Research is needed to identify the best source and then find the cleanest copy possible.
The record player
When transferring a record into the digital domain, any error will become immortalised so it's vital to get everything exactly right. An excellent record player is a prerequisite. The thing must not be influenced by vibrations in the ground, and must be flat and level. A top-of-the-range direct drive turntable is best, delivering absolute accuracy of rotation.
The pickup cartridge
This is really where it all happens. A range of cartridges must be available with a range of different needles. When extracting the delicate music from old grooves, patient experimentation will help to discover which cartridge and which needle gives the best result. Mono records can sometimes deliver superior sound when played with a genuine mono needle. Different stylus forces can be tried until the best music is achieved.
The preamplifier
All records (except those made in the late forties) have the same equalisation curve. That means that the music is filtered before the cutting of the groove, to make space for longer playing times. This filtering must be compensated for in the preamplifier according to the so-called RIAA-curve. The preamplifier should follow this standardised curve accurately, also for frequencies outside the normal hearing range. It's also very helpful to have a preamplifier which can be switched to mono. And of course there should be no difference between the channels. Finally the output of the preamplifier must be high enough to fully drive the computer sound card (see below).
Recording
In order to make CDs, the music must be sampled digitally in a computer. The computer has a sound card which takes the output of the preamplfier and turns the two stereo audio channels into a digital representation which can be manipulated and stored on a CD. The music is thereby changed into computer language. The sound card actually has two separate functions. It must code the analog audio into digital samples. This is called Analog-to-digital conversion, or AD. In order to later hear the music again the reverse procees is required, Digital-to-analog conversion. It so happens that good AD conversion is quite easily achievable for a reasonable cost, so most ordinary sound cards are well capable of accurate coding. However quality DA conversion is horrendously hard to achieve and very costly. Luckily this part of the system is only needed for monitoring during the assembly of the CD. The music remains in the digital domain all the way to the final CD product. The final result will be heard on a CD player with its own, ofter superior, DA converter built in.
Playback
During assembly of tracks into a full CD, accurate monitoring is required. This could be done using an amplifier and good speakers. Multimedia speakers which normally live beside the monitor are useless because no low frequency information can be heard. Best of all and normally quite affordable is a high quality headphone plugged straight into the sound card. Every nuance then becomes obvious.
The computer
The faster and bigger the computer the easier the work will be. Lots of RAM memory, for example 128 MB, will ease the workload. A fast processor also helps to reduce boring waiting times. At least a gigabyte of clear hard disk space is needed, preferably in its own partition. A fast hard disk also helps.
The software
There are many excellent programs available for editing and manipulation of individual pieces of music and assembly of complete CDs. Examples of this are Sound Forge, Cool Edit and Easy CD Creator. Ease of use must be judged in practice before installing the software suite of choice.
