THE "SA ROCK DIGEST/AMUZINE" END OF THE CENTURY BIG VOTE

December 1999 is finally here, heralding the imminent arrival of the most over-hyped event for at least 1000 years, the looming spectre of the M-word. While few know what to expect when Dec 31 becomes Jan 1, besides where they will be when it happens, many publications are using the occasion to draw up those "Best Of The Century/M-word" lists. So, while Bob, John, Paul, Frank, Elvis, Louis, Kurt, Lauryn, Aretha and, um, Britney battle it out for artist of the century (I thought it would be Pablo, but he was a crap musician, apparently); and 'Sgt. Pepper', 'Revolver', 'Nevermind', 'Pet Sounds' and 'Astral Weeks' go into the playoffs for the album title, we felt it was bandwagon-jumping time and decided to hold our own poll to find out who takes the honours in a South African version.

So while you are planning your New Year's festivities, please take a short break and point your mouse at:
http://www.rock.co.za/files/big_voting_form.html
and fill in the short survey. The results of this vote will be published on Amuzine and in the SA Rock Digest early in the New Year.

THE A-CADS

Remember the A-Cads? They had a big SA hit in 1965 with their rousing rendition of Johnny Kidd and the Pirates' 'Hungry For Love'.

Well, thanks to a dedicated fan and vinyl collector, Tertius Louw, and Richard "Dick" Laws, the original guitarist, the A-Cads are now remembered on the Net.

NEW RELEASES
---------------

SIMUNYE - ONE TIME
(THE SOUTH AFRICAN HIT COLLECTION) -
MILLENNIUM SA SUPERSTARS

Afropop, Ethnic-rock, African Rock, Ethno-pop... these are just some of the names given to a music genre which combines traditional African sounds, rhythms, voices and instruments with Western-style pop and rock.

Gallo have released a new double CD which includes a host of well-known SA artists performing some of their greatest hits.

The list of artists that appear on this CD include:
Ladysmith Black Mambazo, "The King of African Reggae" Lucky Dube, Margaret "Lady Africa" Singana, The Soweto String Quartet, Miriam "Mama Afrika" Makeba, PJ "Thandeka" Powers, Sipho "Hotstix" Mabuse, Mango Groove, Johnny Clegg and Juluka, The Soul Brothers, "The King of Kwaito" Arthur Mafokate, "The Bad Girl of Black Pop" Brenda Fassie, The Manhattan Brothers, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, The Flames and many, many more.

Some of the well-known hits are: 'Pata Pata' by Miriam Makeba (hit #12 on the US charts in 1967), the anthemic 'Afrikan Dream' from Vicki Sampson, 'Paradise Road' by Joy (co-written by Patric van Blerk and stayed at SA #1 for 9 weeks!) and Dr Victor's version of Eddy Grant's 'Gimme Hope Joanna'. Eddy's song was originally banned in South Africa due to its unflattering comments about the government of the day.

The only glaring ommission, that I can see, is 70's rock band Hawk who were pioneers in this cross-over genre. Maybe the classic excuse, "licencing problems", is the reason. Or maybe not?

Hawk's website is at:
http://www.rock.co.za/files/hawk_index.html

Excellent liner notes from Brett Nestler with credit to the History of Contemporary Music of South Africa book by Garth Chilvers and Tom Jasiukowicz, published by TOGA in 1994.

More about the book at:
http://www.rock.co.za/files/book_order.html

If you are looking for the best of South African afropop on one compilation, then this is the one... Millennium SA Superstars, indeed!

This and any other SA CD can be ordered online at One World, the best SA CD store on the pla-Net.

SOME OF THE BEST ROCK TRACKS I'VE HEARD THIS YEAR, part 2
Brian Currin

High and Dry - Streetalk
a single released in 1982 by SA band Streetalk (previously known as Boss). Raw rock guitar mixed with smooth harmony vocals and a bouncy beat - an interesting and powerful combination. The guitarist, Peter Hanmer, later went on to form Off The Edge.

More about Streetalk, Boss and Off The Edge at:
http://listen.to/offtheedge

Soldier - Chicco
a single released by ex-Harari band member Chicco in 1989. This African rock reggae song has an incredible drum sound and a strong message. Reminds me of Phil Collins' 'In The Air Tonight' in its style and structure. Available on the 'Simunye - One Time' compilation CD reviewed above.

Roulette - Bruce Springsteen
Bruce goes Gothic! Recorded in 1979 and released last year on the 4CD box set 'Tracks' which I bought recently from CDWeb <http://www.cdweb.co.za>. Possibly the fastest Springsteen song I've ever heard.

Homeworld - Yes
new epic track from the dinosaurs of rock, with yet another unique combination of old and new Yesmen. This track comes from the album 'The Ladder' and is also the title track of a new computer strategy game.

The Ultra Zone - Steve Vai
stunning guitar work from Vai in this mainly instrumental track, with shouts of "Amandla" and "Oweto" every now and again, giving it an African feel, though I'm not quite sure why.

Loving You - Verden Allen
his name may be vaguely familiar as he was the original keyboard player for Mott The Hoople (obscure? me? never!). Lovers of the old Hammond organ sound will love this track with its extended Jon Lord-style solo.

Is Anybody There? - Bonnie Tyler and Rick Wakeman
Anthemic and powerful, this track from Wakeman's 'Return to the Centre of the Earth' is my favourite on this album. Prog-rock keyboards, pounding drums and Bonnie's gravelly vocals combine superbly. At over 6 minutes this song is far too short.

Fairy Tales and Wishes - Mr Jones
SA band named after the Counting Crows song (I guess). Andrew Williams and friends stunned me with the title track from their CD released earlier this year.

...to be continued

SOUTH AFRICAN CLASSIC ROCK ALBUMS

3.African Day - Hawk
4.Boys Will Be Boys - Rabbitt
5.A Croak And A Grunt In The Night - Rabbitt

15.Silver Trees - Abstract Truth
16.Galactic Vibes - Freedoms Children
17.Time To Suck - Suck
18.In The Arena - Circus
19.On The Run - Off The Edge
20.'n Suitcase Vol Winter - Piet Botha

Only 2 (count them, two!) albums out of this whole top 20 list are available on official CD release in retail stores.

Freedom's 'Astra' is available if you look hard enough and Piet Botha's 'Suitcase' is filed under Afrikaans, just before Bles Bridges.

'On The Run' by Off The Edge is an independent release, available from One World.
http://www.oneworld.co.za

Oh, and there is a very good Rabbitt Hits Collection out on CD, released by Gallo in 1996, which is still around in some stores.

http://www.rock.co.za/files/rabbitt_hits.html

What a pathetic situation, though... makes one think, doesn't it, well... doesn't it? Why is there no re-issue programme for SA's legends of rock? Is there anybody out there who cares enough to do something about it? Will anybody buy the CDs of these rock legends?

How about a sampler compilation album of tracks from these (and other) albums to gauge the desire of South Africans to remember their rock heritage?

OH WHAT A CIRCUS

I was visiting your site again and found something that jolted my alcohol tainted memory. CIRCUS!! Bernie Millar, Bones Brettel and co played Saturday morning matinees and evenings at the "Grand Wazoo" in Pretoria (Kingsley Centre) back in 1977-79. Wild times!! I will never forget their classic "Stupid Boy" and the epic "Conquistador".

I would really like to own a copy of their album... {me too - ed} I bought a bottle of Paarl Perle instead back in '78!! Stupid move! I met Bernie Millar some years ago and asked where I could get a copy... and he told me that he personally does not own one! Was there not a second album too? I think it has a similar leopard's head on the cover, but with pencils in the place of the fangs. Or maybe I was just pissed!!

Cheers, and thanks to Bernie and Bones for the GOOD times!!

BONES

I just re-read an old issue and saw a query as to Bones Brettell's whereabouts. Ron (he won't answer to Bones anymore, enen though he's just as skinny) has a company in Sandton called Ron Brettell Music Production. He produces and/or writes jingles, music for corporate videos and TV commercials etc. He still works with PJ occasionally and has lost none of his talent! At one stage he and Bernie Millar were in partnership, but about 3 years ago they went their separate ways.

LOOKING FOR NUDE GIRLS

I'm an American who has totally fallen for the Springbok Nude Girls. I've ordered all their discs from Oneworld <http://www.oneworld.co.za> but I want to hear more. I really want to hear what they're like in concert as the likelihood of them ever playing the US seems pretty remote at this point. Anyway, I'm wondering if there are any live radio broadcasts out there and how I could get a hold of them? If anyone can help me out, I'm Cary at mailto:Carydar@aol.com

MIRROR MAGIC

I am trying desperately to obtain a copy of Falling Mirror's album 'chemist girl' {actually 'Johnny Calls The Chemist' - ed} and 'shattered'. I would be interested in any other Falling Mirror albums and if there are any websites with information about Falling Mirror I would appreciate the address.

I currently live in England but have contacts in S.A. and would love to know if there is anywhere in S.A where these albums could be bought or could someone supply me with the catalogue numbers for the albums. I greatly appreciate any help that you can give me.

Andrew Longshaw
mailto:donna.dlongshaw@virginnet.co.uk

{Ed: the Falling Mirror webpage on the SA Rock Legends website <http://www.rock.co.za/files/fm_index.html> has some of the info you are looking for including the catalogue numbers. Benjy Mudie is planning to re-issue the Falling Mirror back-catalogue on CD for the first time next year. Only the compilation album 'Shattered' was previously released on CD but it is currently unavailable.}

Does anyone else remember.....?

LESLEY RAE DOWLING

I'm from the Netherlands (not really, I was born in Pretoria) but I've been staying out here for 23 years.

By the way, do you have an idea how I can get in touch with Lesley Rae
Dowling? I met her once and I must say I'm very intrigued by her voice. If possible I'd like to see if she's still doing anything in the music industry. Maybe I can be of some assistance in some of her future projects, if I can get in touch with her....

POP SHOP TRACK LISTINGS
http://members.tripod.lycos.nl/Rembrandt/PopShop/PopShopHome.html

Rene Mullenders, a Digest subscriber from way back, has painstakingly been cataloguing the track listings of all of the albums in that fantastic series of SA compilations, 'Pop Shop'.

Whilst the very successful 'Springbok Hits' series was performed by session musicians, the 'Pop Shop' series released by MFP (Music For Pleasure) featured the original artists. The albums included a mix of local and international songs that were all SA radio hits at the time.

'Pop Shop' spawned a couple of 'Pop Shop Spectacular' double albums, a few 'Pop Shop Gold' albums and a TV programme in the early days of SABC-TV (late 70s).

The 'Pop Shop' series started in August 1977 and continued at a rate of about 3 to 4 a year until number 51 (to the best of my knowledge), released in 1991.

Visit Rene's highly detailed website at:
http://members.tripod.lycos.nl/Rembrandt/PopShop/PopShopHome.html
and I know any input would be gratefully received by him.

Rene wrote....

If you click on the South African flag you're taken to the South Africa's Rock Classics pages.

If you click on the Dutch flag you're taken to Ferry's music database of Dutch artists.

Some song titles are linked to their lyrics (with time I want to add links to MP3's).

Some artist names are linked to a website about them.

Some album titles are linked to a page with details about the album.

At this stage there are still only a few links as it takes time to find all the pages. Once I get a PC at home, these pages will start changing dramatically. Whenever that will be I don't know, I hope soon. Maybe I should write a letter to Santa.

"unsubscribe" has been known to work too...
