That's a wise and timeous song to cover as it is more relevant today than it ever was. But it seems normal rules apply, even while war rages, and Karma has regretfully told us that permission to put it up at SAmp3.com has been refused by those that make those decisions. But, in its place, Karma has authorised the song, 'Life', the first single off Henry Ate's '96-02' singles retrospective, for SAmp3.com. And it's a good time to haul out and read Dylan's epic and hostile attack on those who not only build the big guns, but also are far too keen to use them. ---------------------------- COCA COLA FREE STAGE AT SPLASHY FEN The annual Splashy Fen Music Festival takes place from April 24 to 28. Featuring the likes of Tweak, Sons of Trout, Blues Broers, Tree 63, Mikanic, Marlowe, Siamese and an exclusive Drum Café performance, it promises another fun and funky musical weekend in the country. This year an old time favourite returns to Splashy Fen in a big way - a dedicated free stage where you can show off your musical skills and showcase your songs. No need for auditions or demo CDs; if you can hold a couple of songs together, preferably originals, book a slot at the free stage. Registration starts at 9am and, to be fair, most slots will only be booked on the day. Running from 10am until 6pm on Friday 25th, Saturday 26th and on Sunday 27th April, this leaves plenty of opportunity for all the hidden talent at Splashy Fen to come out of the shadows and grab their moment in the spotlight. Expect excitement, surprises and never a dull moment. Not only are solo artists encouraged to step forward, but this year a backline will also be provided for all the bands out there who want to get their music heard. The best two free stage acts on each day will win a slot on the Carling Black Label outdoor stage on Sunday evening - this could be their big break! For those Jimi Hendrix "wannabes", an air guitar competition will be held on Friday and Saturday, with the finals on Sunday and everyone is welcome to enter. Prizes for the most entertaining guitar playing imitation are up for grabs, compliments of Coca Cola and EMI. Remember, you're never too old or too young to step on the free stage! mailto:needlenose@futurenet.co.za Tel. 033 34 55 0 77 Cell. 082 377 2610 To get your early bird ticket at the amazing reduced price of only R200, pop into your local CDW. NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES ----------------------------------------- ------ MP3s ------ New mp3s at SAmp3.com: 'How Can You Tune Me Nooit When I Tune You It's Cool' - Valiant Swart An acoustic folk-blues song (sung in English) from Valiant Swart's first album 'Dorp Straat Revisited' (1996) recently re-issued by Rhythm Records. This song competes for "the mp3 with the longest title" award but is still beaten (by 3 letters) by The Radio Rats with 'In The Minimum Amount Of Time I Want To Make You Mine' (42 letters). 'Julia' - Khumbula How to describe this sound? African? Pop? Jazz? Caribbean? Party? Fusion? 'Graceland' without Paul Simon? I give up, but I know it's really cool... take a listen and let me know what you would call it. 'Onder In My Whiskyglas (Reggae Version)' (live at KKNK 2000) - Koos Kombuis The Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees is currently on the go in Oudtshoorn. If you can't be there this reworking of a Koos Kombuis classic (by Koos himself) taken from a performance in 2000 at the Tassenberg Stalteater will give you some idea of the atmosphere. 'Life' - Henry Ate A typical Henry Ate-type song... and that's not a bad thing at all. Great song to listen to while driving. See "News" section above. 'Moan in Blues' - Akkedis (with Albert Frost) Afrikaans blues from the Lizard dudes of Stellenbosch with guest guitar by Blues Broers / Frosted Orange guitarmeester Albert Frost. See review of 'Husse Met Lang Ore' under "A Naartjie In The UK" section below. 'Pretty Baby (Radio Version)' - KJ Stone See "New Releases" section below for info on KJ Stone's new CD 'In Different Voices'. 'Stay' - Ketamine Energetic female-fronted rock. I would love to see this song performed live, but until then this mp3 will have to suffice. Taken off the double compilation CD 'Wicked Rock: Let Us Be Heard'. More at http://www.SAmp3.com/wickedrock.html 'My Favourite Song On The Radio' - What Now?! Punk rock with some interesting rhythm changes. Taken off the double compilation CD 'Wicked Rock: Let Us Be Heard'. Maybe this can become "my favourite song on the net", instead? 'Morning Glory' - Liela As Liela's previous mp3 'Wish We Were Here' climbs the charts (currently at number 5), we have another song from her. 'Morning Glory' is not a cover of that old 70s song by the Brown Jug Band, but rather an uptempo folky song of praise to the beginning of the day. Sort of like Sundance's 'What's Love' or Mike Oldfield and Maggie Reilly's 'Moonlight Shadow'. 'Slip Away' - Robin Auld Robin is been around for years and his lastest CD 'Luxury' is a wonderful laidback and inspiring album (a bit like the man himself). Just add a braai and some friends. 'Game Over (Love Fool)' - Alexis The opening track from the 'Overload' CD by Alexis. A tough song which tells it like it is. Tell him, girl. All the full-length mp3s are available for free download at http://www.SAmp3.com by kind permission of the artists and/or their record companies. Buy South African CDs at http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 ----- CDs ----- SPRINGCAN - 'ARE YOU CONFUZ ED?" 'Space Wars 1' (a tirade of longing, approximately 5-seconds long) is a powerful intro to this collection of angst-ridden lyrics, accomplished musicianship and composition. Despite the variety of music styles, this album provides a very coherent sound that is well worth listening to. With the overall music style being partial to hardish alternative rock, this album may not appeal to the ears of the pop and adult contemporary market, but the lyrics might just rouse empathy in a very wide audience. The two Afrikaans songs, 'Duiwel Kom Ons Haal' and 'Bloemfontein' (apparently posing a bit of a stretch for the band and written for the "Jip Rockspider" competition), compare very favourably with what is currently popular in the Afrikaans Alternative market. 'Are You Confuz Ed?', however, places Springcan firmly in the English Alternative Rock genre, and will feature in the personal play list of my co-fans of honest lyrics, kick-ass guitars and inventive drumming. My Personal Favourite Song on 'Are you Confuz Ed?' is 'Smile'... The competent muso's that make up Springcan may never be able to retire at 35 as a result of their music earnings in SA, but I would not mind being proven wrong on this account. Reviewed by Anna Swanepoel for Gypsy Productions http://www.gypsy.co.za Listen to Springcan's 'Human Being' at http://www.SAmp3.com ------------------ KJ STONE - 'IN DIFFERENT VOICES' (SONIC ORANGE) KJ hails from the UK where she was the first woman engineer on Channel 4 before spending a few years on the educational side of music production and all the new technologies. She relocated to SA in the mid-90's and managed the SoundHouse, a room filled with computers and music software for teaching purposes, at The Baxter Theatre in Cape Town. But KJ felt she had a good album in her and spent most of 2002 writing and producing 'In Different Voices', her very impressive debut. All the songs on 'In Different Voices' are written by KJ, apart from the lyrics on the 'Summer's Lease', which is the album's only nod to Enya's operatic-type pop, with Zanne Stapelberg singing lines from William Shakespeare's "Darling buds of May..." poem. KJ plays guitars and keyboards, and sings on some of these songs, like the two versions of her funky first single, 'Pretty Baby', which bookend the album. It's a song that resembles Semisane's 'Girlfriend (Of Mine) with its spoken stream of images, and a hard interior jazzy guitar from Jeremy Olivier. But for her other tracks KJ has roped in a string of guests to flesh out her compositions and she chose perceptively, with Gloria Bosman, doing her finest Macy Gray impression on the lovely, slow-building 'Always', Melissa on 'Limitless', and D's soulful voice on 'Crushed Beyond Repair' and 'No More'. There's enough on this album to catch anyone's attention and hold it for repeated listenings. Think Steely Dan, Morcheeba and Moby, The Sundays and St Etienne - 'In Different Voices' is something special. It's a trip-Pop album with plenty of hooky variety, and tunes that you'll swear you've heard somewhere before but can't quite place, the true sign of a strong pop album. (SS) Listen to 'Pretty Baby' at http://www.SAmp3.com Buy http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&ID=SOIDV01 ------------------------ 'BETWEEN THE FACTS' - RODRIGUEZ (Vagabond Music) The mythical and extremely rare "bridging" album of cover versions that Rodriguez recorded in the early 70s is finally getting a CD release on 1st April. Titled 'Between The Facts' and featuring versions of Pat Boone's 'April Love' and Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers' 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love' amongst it's 12 tracks. Rodriguez also re-recorded 'Rich Folks Hoax' for this album which is a must for every Rodriguez fan and/or lovers of covers of golden oldies. Available from all good CD stores (and maybe even some bad ones). Bad boys Paul Rickert and Battery 9 sound dangerous and aggressive. Their rock has real balls. It sounds like machines of the future spraying electricity to the kicking rhythm of the industrial world. 'Protskrog', their first and my first B9 CD, is pounding layers of industrial rock, strong ballads, and occasional humor. Here, B9 sparks into life. Favorites: the serious driver 'Kom Hier' to the darkly tasty 'Heeere Kitty Kitty', the scary 'I'm Home' and the odd 'Oom Kosie'. The subliminal message of 'Strop' must be "Turn me up". Springy grinding guitar, tape loops, steel barrel pounding, and fistfuls of high-energy songs keep this CD going. There's the awe-filling 'Kiss The Machine', 'Cross No More Rivers', 'Scream', and nine others. The double CD 'Gris' has new or reworked songs, including a live video, sounds for your own B9 song, a screensaver, logo images, plus Paul's usual ingenious use of found and made-up sounds. The 'Koue Vuur' intro sounds like tiger claws screeching on God's chalk board, while 'Scream' starts like that tiger being whipped. A drawing of breath before 'Wrok'. 'Wrok' continues the cool sinister and threatening tone. Electricity still sprays in this refined Battery 9 with mandatory B9 intensity--but no mellow album this, but tight control. However, if the mood isn't right, some tracks can be... uncomfortable. On the recent 'Sondebok', Paul Riekert and Battery 9 have a label, Gallo, but still own one hundred points of artistic control. A growth from 'Wrok', with greater world vision. The bad boys still energize, but with great control--which should come with great power. In 'I Surrender' on 'Wrok', Paul urges, "create something new", which echoes my artistic philosophy: do it new or better or don't do it. Paul sings, "If you were a lager, you'd be light", and Battery 9 are stout rock. Read http://rock.co.za/legends/90s/battery9_index.html Listen http://www.SAmp3.com/artists.html Buy http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&searchfor=battery Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com Post Script ----------- Kurt teaches English to fifteen and sixteen year old Texan kids. Here is a true story... While they used their copies of the novel 'To Kill a Mockingbird' to correct their tests, I played some Battery 9, 'Gris'. One boy in front asked, "What kind of music is this?" I looked at him puzzled, thinking no teenaged American male should ask that question, he should have heard the sounds of raw power in various forms before. "It's in the industrial genre," I replied ("genre" was a vocabulary word this week, so I used it deliberately). "Haven't you ever heard of that kind of music?" A girl chimed in, "Yes you have," she said, "like Nine Inch Nails." "Yeah," he retorted, gesturing to the speakers. "But this is good." _________________________________ 5.A NAARTJIE IN THE UK ------------------------ London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music 'HUSSE MET LANG ORE' - AKKEDIS 'Husse met Lang Ore' is apparently the Afrikaans equivalent phrase for Curiosity Killed the Cat. I must admit that I found it rather weird that Akkedis would have a tribute album to a rather mediocre 80's boy band. Furthermore, it is often the curiosity of a cat that has led to the demise of a lizard (or akkedis in Afrikaans). That said, any cats that want to mess with the Dennis Brothers (Rudi and Arthur) may find more than they bargained for as they have some heavyweights behind them on this, their debut album. With Valiant Swart producing and adding some guitars, backing vocals and bekfluitjie, Jurgen von Wechmar engineering and mixing and Albert Frost guesting on guitars, one cannot but sit up and take notice. After all if these heavyweights have taken notice, there must be something here. What Akkedis have done on both this, their debut, and the follow up album 'Voortvlugtend' is make some great Dire Straits inspired rock songs rooted in South African youth culture. Funny, poignant and relevant lyrics are set against guitar laden free flowing music. 'Dronk Wees' is possibly one of the funniest where a description of an alcohol fuelled evening ends in his 'after 2am beauty queen' letting the air out of 3 of his tyres. The great reggae guitar riffs of 'Verantwoordelike Volwassenes' poignantly underpin the worries of adulthood while 'Happily Jobless' is relevant as it expounds the problems of unemployment in the new South Africa. Most tracks have an easygoing, feeling free sound. Bouncy and breezy this is feel good rock that will lift your spirits as you sing along or bop around the lounge to it. If you like 'Voortvlugtend', you'll like this, and vice versa. Both albums from Akkedis have a similar feel and mix of funny, serious, seriously funny or funnily serious tunes that you can't help but like. Barbara had spent 6 weeks at the top, making 'I Don't Want To Play House' the second longest chart topper by a local act behind Charisma's 12 weeks with 'Mammy Blue'. In later years others would come and go better than Barbara, but none would touch Charisma. Neil Diamond had his 5th top 5 hit in 1978 with 'Desiree'. It was his 11th top 20 hit since 'Sweet Caroline' in 1969. This was his first hit in just over a year, the previous being 'Beautiful Noise' which reached number 7 in November of 1976. Clout clung to the number 2 spot for a second week after having dropped from the top. 'Talk Talk' become only the second number 1 since 1969 to fall on April Fools day. The previous time had been when Pussycat topped the chart in 1977 on 1 April 1977. Shifty boss Lloyd Ross moved into the top 5 with his moving instrumental theme tune to the popular TV series 'Vyfster'. This became the 76th top 5 hit by a South African act since 1969. Jennifer Warnes was making a bit of a name for herself as an artist who teamed up with ageing stars to sing best selling songs from movies. In 1983 she entered the top 5 alongside Joe Cocker singing 'Up Where We Belong' which was from the movie 'An Officer and a Gentleman' starring Richard Gere and in 1988 she was still floating around the top 5 with '(I've Had) The Time Of My Life' alongside ex-Righteous Brother Bill Medley. The song was from 'Dirty Dancing' which featured Patrick Swayze. Swayze would chart later in the year with 'She's Like The Wind' which came from the same movie. The song would only manage to reach number 13. It's called 'Life In The Fast Lane' and is a tribute to the music of the Eagles. We are performing at the Roxy Revue Bar every Wed, Thurs, Fri and Sat until April 5 and so far the crowds have been very enthusiastic. The show offers the songs of the Eagles performed by a nine-piece group under the leadership of Joe Recrozio, and we play all the favourites including 'Hotel California', 'Take It To The Limit', 'Life in The Fast Lane' and others. The best comment we've had so far was from an irate lady who accused our sound engineer of playing an Eagles' CD while we mimed! ULF mailto:ulfbystrom@hotmail.com ------------------------- SELECTED TRACKLISTINGS I hope that you can help me. I live in the United Sates and my girlfriend sent me some CD's from South Africa. I would like to have more information on the artists and the songs featured on these compilations. The three CD's come from a magazine called SL (Student Life magazine) as freebies, and are labelled 'Selection 1', 'Selection 2' and 'Selection 3'. I'm not sure about the date when she bought the magazine but it was around 8 months ago, so I presume that the CD's came with the issues for the months of June, July, and August 2002. Some of the artists featured on the compilation are international acts but most of the other acts are South African, I presume. I really like the stuff and would appreciate a track listing or something like that if available. I could also not find a website for the magazine. Thanks in advance Tommy mailto:CharlThom_Bayer@umit.maine.edu {Ed: the first free cover disc ('Selection #1') with SL magazine was with the May 2002 issue and have followed every month since then. These CD's are a wonderful way to experience a wide range of current South African music of all styles (well almost all styles). The CD with the March 2003 issue ('Selection #10') featured only South African artists. Wonder if they will bring out a 'Best Of Selection' CD sometime? We suggest emailing SL Magazine at mailto:slmagazine@slmagazine.co.za to see if they can help with those track lists.} ------------------------- ZIA I am looking for any CD's by "Zia" from South Africa. LAST SHOW AND 'THIS MY NO HEART' CD EP RELEASE PARTY This is the last chance to catch GO TEAM! in action. The performance will be supported by hardcore superheroes, Neshamah, and one more band yet to be announced. A bunch of merch is likely to be on sale, including Cape Town's first screamo project, GO TEAM!'s new debut CD EP - 'This My No Heart' which has five songs, four interludes, a hidden remix and a bunch of live footage. The band began in mid-September 2002, started gigging late-November, and disbanded in early January 2003, after playing a total of five explosive performances. Not bad for a band who only intended to be "just a summer fling". GO TEAM! Initially planned this recording as an attempt to archive their efforts before they went their separate ways. However, with the help of Nifty Records, they were persuaded to take it further and make it available to a wider audience... so come to the Purple Turtle on Sat 5 April and bring some cash..... (DN) ------------- LIVE REVIEWS ------------- TO BOLDLY CARGO WHERE NO DORP HAS GONE BEFORE Dorp at Cargo, London 26 March 2003 When George W. declared war on e-Rock was he only after dance and electronica or would using loops and samples mean that you would also be in the crosshairs of his sights? Pieter Bezuidenhout, the lead singer of Dorp thought it was best to play it safe and wear a T-Shirt with the word 'Army' emblazoned on it. Perhaps he thought that by doing so George would aim his bombs elsewhere. Another theory is that it referred to his actions on stage where those appendages attached to his shoulders were flailing around in his trademark manic and mesmerising dance. Cargo is a club tucked into one of the back alleys in the heart of London's business world. Surrounded by banks and trendy IT companies, it is built in the archway of a bridge, giving the music area a cellar like quality. And talking of quality, the sound system is one of the best that I've heard in a London club, allowing one to hear the Dorp sound at pulsating levels with crystal clear clarity. That is a treat as the boys have continued to polish their act and sounded tighter than ever. Having recently signed up with a new management company, they have managed to hand over the boring bits of being in a band to the company and are concentrating on the music. New tunes like 'Complicated' and 'Invisible Man' rubbed shoulders with old favourites like 'Razorback' and 'Sorry' in a rocking attack on the senses to such a degree that I hardly noticed the absence of my personal favourite 'Madcow'. Pieter's vocals were often complimented by Kevin Kieswetter who is proving himself to be an accomplished axeman eking out funky hardcore riffs with aplomb {and a plectrum, maybe? - ed?}. With some press and record label representatives present, this was a showcase gig and Dorp showed their case to be a Samsonite (no relation) one, being of high quality, tough and durable. With this accomplished performance they should have won the battle for the hearts and minds (and ears) of those present. Fingers crossed that it leads to bigger and greater things. John Samson SA Rock Digest London Gig Guide http://www.sarockdigest.com/london -------------------------- BRIXTON MOORD EN ROOF ORKES - LICENCE TO THRASH Don't even think that these dudes won't adapt to the waterholes of Pretoria. With my own beady eyes I check Moord on drums, Brixton Barnard with that poison tongue and moody bass, Roof annexing the stage with his churning lyrics and deceptively neutral voice, and the enigmatic Pat Plank on lead guitar. Like 'Brixton Dae' - making the fans bounce like Mexican beans - "Hoor die seine van die Brixtontoring, volg die ritme van die honde wat blaf, bingo in Highstraat, junkies wat lag, maar ons sit tevrede by die Abelarde en wag..." It's utterly cool to see how Pretoria and Brixton mix like brandy and coke. Roof reminds us of the intricacies of suburbia - "Gee jou hart vir Hillbrow, sy skop jou in die gat, Melville gee jou sooibrand en Rosebank steel jou geld, Yeoville is te hectic en Orange Grove te ver, Maar in Brixton wag ons in die local bar!!!" YEAHHH!!!!! The regular bar patrons in Steak & Ale look more nervous by the minute. The band talks "Yuppies" , the drummer doesn't even break a sweat, but you can't see his hands move - I'm fearing the roof's gonna yield. Then we get 'Lisa Forward' with that sly little intro -"Lisa Forward, I feel so awkward" but then the drums hammer home, Brixton brings the dark bass beat, and Roof groans into the mike: "I wish I was a rockstar ...". Ouch. It kicks you right in the belly button. Barely recovered, you get 'Asyn' in your head. All about this guy who's collecting his toaster at the shopping centre. The freaky people, the vibes, the scenes - and Brixton spits out another vitriolic "Ek's eintlik hier vir my toaster, en Morkel se belofte". Temperature's soaring. Roof and Pat Plank go nuts with 'Daar is geen', and in the corner Moord seems quite ready to levitate. Brixton yells with the others "Ons wag op die kaptein, wag op die kaptein" while the thunderous rolls from the corner thrash out a mean rickety-rack on my ribcage. Sheeesh. They take fifteen and we take some tequila, dry red wine, beer - whatever floats the boat. Then they're back with the saucy 'Sussie se Sweep', and some of the gents completely forget about the cricket. Roof and Brixton sing innocently in a lazy reggae shuffle about "Sussie se sweep, Sussie se sweet, Sussie se stockings, Sussie wil weet, of sy jou kan vasbind, of sy jou kan streep, of jy hard sal skree as sy jou bloots ry ..." Roof grins and lifts his arms while the patrons keep listening, open-mouthed. "Haar kappie sal sy afhaal net vir jou, haar stewels sal sy opryg net vir jou, daai tossels sal sy swaai net vir jou, die ding in haar hand hou sy reg om vir jou te brand ..." while we yell like banshees, tonsils flapping like flags in the wind. "Hiiiii-haaaaa!!! ROOFFF!!" Then there's 'Dronk', 'Vis', with the "Sit my terug in skubbe, ek wil 'n vis wees ..." and then the rough, raw 'Spoed'. Choose your vehicle. This one's a monster, dragging you buck-naked through a gravel pit. "Met jou vuis op die throttle, jou voet op die rat, kan die langpad jou vat waar hy jou heen moet vat, en as jy stilhou kom die duiwel jou haal, vir jou huisie in die suburbs met 'n halsband aan". Aaaiieeee!!! So they unsettle the crowd a bit. That's what happens when one listens to some real and sweaty lyrics that willingly thrash a comatose conscience out of its flatline. What you quickly realise is how low down the musical food chain you are. Like a little single-celled amoeba strumming away on a strand of seaweed by comparison. Each member of this illustrious group is a notable performer in his own right, but together they are dynamite. Imagine a delicious cocktail of four exotic ingredients combined with an Okavango sunset. That's what it's like. Thanks to local impresarios Ed and Marilyn Johnson for bringing such high calibre shows to town, and thanks to East Londoners for their overwhelming support. Under the Buffalo Bowling Club's Honours Board on Wednesday evening, a modest looking Aquarian Quartet faced a huge perspiring crowd and picked up their instruments. They had the audience's attention straight away with 'Water's Edge', a swingy number featuring Steve Newman on Oupa, an acoustic bass made by luthier extraordinaire Mervyn Davis of Broederstroom. "Now for one with a short, succinct title", said Tony Cox, 'Your Name On A Grain Of Rice Through A Glass Dolphin!' This was a fast, exciting number showcasing Greg Georgiades on bouzouki. The next solo number, by Syd Kitchen, was called 'Wave', and steel strings had never sounded sweeter or richer. Delicate African rhythms were punctuated with sly little harmonic pings. His lovely guitar was hand crafted by Marc P. Maingard, as was Tony's. A "quirky little tune" called 'Bicycle' again demonstrated Steve's masterful percussion on his old faithful guitar called 'Senior' and there was an excellent jazz solo by Greg. This one scored an ecstatic response from the audience: "Can it get any better than that?", shouted someone. A slow, hypnotic number started the second set. It was called 'Wide Open Tune', and I suppose you could put your own thoughts to it, though it reminded me of walking through a big, unknown city. For the first time we heard Greg on the oud, ancient forerunner to the lute, an instrument most people haven't seen or heard of, let alone become proficient in playing. It seemed strange to rock to an oud, an instrument usually reserved for traditional Middle-Eastern music. Greg's interest in the oud stems from his Egyptian/Cypriot/Lebanese background. The oud came into its own on 'Oud if You Could', and on this one it sounded really mysterious and Eastern. Together with percussive shrieks, squawks and clopping from Steve's guitar, it was as good as having a camel train grunting and clanking through the hall. Incidentally, the shows held at this venue before usually had the stage at the opposite end, with the audience facing the other way, and the new arrangement definitely seemed to work better. The end of the performance came, but the crowd wasn't planning on going home just yet. They called for several encores and the guys, good-natured as ever, were happy to oblige.
