The next regular edition will arrive on 13th Jan 2003. But in between those two will be the special year-end Digest edition on 1st January 2003, with the Top Albums and Songs of 2002 and some other year-end stuff. So, with apologies to Dylan, "when the rooster crows at the break of the New Year, look in your email box and it'll be there". But if you want to find out in advance what those best albums and songs are, you can hear Digest co-editor Stephen Segerman counting down those lists and playing those songs on SAFM in a two-hour special on the Bruce Millar Show (104-107kHz). The first program will be live from 10-11am on Friday 27th December and the final program will be from 10-11pm on Wednesday 31st December. We take this opportunity to thank all our contributors, artists, suppliers, subscribers, and everyone in our SA music community for your support, and wish you and all your families and friends a Happy Christmas, and, more then ever, a very peaceful New Year. ------------------ STAGE MAGAZINE MUSIC FESTIVAL River Club, Observatory, Cape Town - Sat 21 Dec Stage Magazine is hosting an outdoor festival which will feature a full day of original music ranging from hip hop to modern rock, break dancing, kwaito, alternative progressive rock, hard core, rap core, and Christian Rock. The organisers assure us that: "One can expect the highest quality of sound originating from the gut of passionate musicians flying straight into Shure microphones blasting out of JBL speakers, a sincere aural treat. Yes, it's called name-dropping, but it's essential if it's the best. Also expect arts and craft stalls, CD and T-shirt stands, food and drinks, all at an extremely reasonable price". Artists performing at the Stage Magazine Music Festival include: Kelvin Declined, DORP, Desert Velvet, Ghost, Arcane, Brenton Blue, Claudia, Serving Suggestion, Jason Glover, Dolly Rockers, Galore, Black Noise, Stigmata (Mantis), Aftertaste, 7 Day Story, Scarlet Host, AK Massive, DJs: Charl Chaka and DJ Nick Matthews. The MC is Natalie Becker from P4 radio, also well known as a presenter of Top Billing. Stagemodels.com and Stage Concerts, in conjunction with Stage Magazine, are sponsoring the festival and organising it. The other sponsors are Wild & Marr Cape Town and Audio Quest, both responsible for the sound; UltraSound will be supplying the full stage, the DJ equipment and the lighting and Stage Gear the back-line. (Stage Gear should not be mistaken for divisions of the Stage Media Group; they're only namesakes.) Cinzano 5, who joined as late sponsor, assisted in printing the flyers and posters. It is all happening outdoors at the River Club, Observatory, Cape Town on Saturday the 21st of December. Gates open at 12 noon and music starts almost immediately thereafter. Tickets go for only R60 at Computicket ------- BOOK NOW! FOR THE NORTH SEA JAZZ FESTIVAL - CAPE TOWN 2003 The fourth successive staging of the North Sea Jazz Festival in Cape Town will be taking place at the Good Hope Centre on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th March 2003. The festival will be moving to the new Convention Centre in Cape Town in 2004, so the capacity for the 2003 event is limited to approximately 11,000 per evening. Esp-Afrika (Pty) Ltd (SA) and Mojo Concerts BV (The Netherlands), the festival organisers, are confident that the traditional evenly split contingent of 32 international and African artists will again be as exceptional as in previous years. As a result, the demand from both South African and international jazz fans for tickets, trains, flights, accommodation, and travel packages for the sell-out festival has already begun. At this early stage, the list of international and African artists confirmed to appear at the 2003 Festival already includes Isaac Hayes, Andreas Vollenweider, Jonas Gangwa, Archie Shepp, Marcus Wyatt, Eric Fran Hanswijk, Bayete featuring Jabu Kanyile, Eric Vloeimans, Allou April, Pieces Of A Dream, Relax, Herbert, Moses Khumalo, and, the criss-cross rhythms of... Osibisa! With eight of the original members! The organisers have been working with SAA and Jazz Times magazine to make a large variety of travel packages available. Details of these are available from SAA at +27 11 978 1145 or at the Jazz Times website at www.jazztimes.com. There is also a NSJF hotline at +27 83-123-JAZZ (or 5299) and line-up updates and other festival info can be found at http://www.nsjfcapetown.com Think about booking soon! --------------------- THE USUAL RETURN FOR THE "7-YEAR ITCH" CONCERTS After a few years apart, following the release of their debut album, 'Born In A Storm', The Usual are making a minor Cape Town comeback with the two Heineken Sunset Concerts at the Suikerbossie Restaurant above Hout Bay. KFM will be the junior sponsors for each of these two exclusive "Seven-Year Itch" concerts. The two sunset performances will be limited to a 300 capacity, and will take place from 6-9pm on Sunday 29th and Monday 30th December. In the past few years guitarist Tom Fox, Drummer Paul Tizzard and bassist Yo-yo Buys have worked on various side projects including backing Ted Baumann as the Swamp Funk Quartet. Fox also reappeared with his old band Bright Blue at their recent series of gigs to launch their 'Greatest Hits' album. The Usual's vocalist, James Stewart released his 'Upside Down/A Man Like Me' single during 2002 and is currently working on a solo album as well as a host of other recordings at Street Level Studios. To mark the event, the band are releasing a limited edition seven-track EP which contains their biggest hits to date as well as the video for the 'Born In A Storm' video and a filmed interview with the band. The Usual have made six complimentary sets of double tickets for the concerts, plus a copy of the CD, available to Digest subscribers. To be eligible for one of these sets, please email mailto:ctsound@iafrica.com and explain, in an "unusual" sentence, why you deserve to be awarded one of these prizes. IS BACK!, we mentioned that the 'Don't Tune Us, We'll, Tune You' concerts with Tony Cox, Steve Newman and Chris Tokalon were being held at the Ford Little Theatre on Fri 3/4 Jan 2003. We neglected to mention that the Ford Little Theatre is in Port Elizabeth. __________________________________________ 2.CHARTS ----------- TOP 30 SOUTH AFRICAN MP3s OF THE WEEK http://www.samp3.com This week [last week] (highest position) Title - Artist (Album/Label) 1. 'Love Crash' finds the lads rapping in mock-reggae accents about stuff like apartheid, JK, "leaving a scar", André le Toit and Dagga Dirk Uys, "rocking the Casbah, just like the Clash", etc before the full tilt, air guitar-inducing rock chorus crashes in. 'Love Crash' is typical of the strange hybrid of styles that characterizes recent Wonderboom releases, and is sure to shake up the SA airwaves over the next few months. The band are currently putting the finishing touches to their upcoming fourth album, due for release in February 2003. The band's recent (SA cover versions) album, 'Rewind', produced four top ten hits with 'Africa', 'Johnny Calls The Chemist', 'Shadows' and chart-topper 'Charlie'. 'Love Crash' should continue the successful run. -------------------- NEO MUYANGA RELEASES 'THE LISTENING ROOM (MUDRA No. 28)' Blk Sonshine co-founder Neo Muyanga, whose work with the duo has produced such classic hits as 'Born In A Taxi', 'Building', 'Crazy' and 'Bahlalefi', has released his debut solo album. 'The Listening Room (Mudra No. 28)' was recorded, produced and performed by Neo at his Cape Town studio over a period of six months. The first single, 'My World', is the theme tune to the new popular SABC TV show, 'All You Need Is Love', which is scheduled to run until March 2003. The album has several multi format singles including the beautiful ballad, 'Nalate', the drum'n bass inspired 'Maru', 'Sometime', 'Never Enough', and 'Nna Hatshe', fusing elements of world, jazz, pop, ethnic, trip-hop and soul into a heady and unique musical brew. Neo Muyanga has assembled an impressive live band - Concorde Nkabinde (bass), Barry van Zyl (drums) and Indian muso Priyesh (harmonium, Indian flute) - and will be touring though-out 2003 beginning with several dates in Cape Town during January. ------------------- PAUL ABRO - 'SONGS FROM THE SMALL SETTEE' 'Songs From The Small Settee' is the debut from the new Cape Town singer-songwriter-guitarist, Paul Abro. The four-song EP is already attracting a lot of interest for its unusually catchy adult oriented pop songs - 'Day Before I Met You', 'Drinking You - Song For Melissa', 'Sunshine', and 'Strive (To Be Happy)' - which all have a warm, optimistic tone. Paul Abro plays guitar and sings on all the tracks accompanied by Kevin Gibson on drums, Dave Ridgeway on bass, and Selwyn Shandel on keyboards. Abro's music blends elements of Michael Franks' cool jazz touch, Chicago's brass pop, and Dean Friedman's vulnerable vocals and lyrics to create an impressive opening contribution. The arrangements for these songs are varied with Amanda Tiffin and Abigail Petersen adding lovely backing vocals, Ian Smith laying some cool trumpet into the grooves, and Rael Goodman adding some sweet violin on to the up-tempo, feel-good 'Strive (To Be Happy)'. As a bonus touch, guitar legend Alan Faull (of Falling Mirror fame) was coaxed into the studio to work on the song 'Drinking You'. 'Songs From The Settee' was recorded and given a final mix at Shandel Studios in Camps Bay, and was mastered by Tully McCully at Spaced Out Sounds Studios. Following on from this debut release, Paul Abro is looking to complete his first album during 2003, followed by some live gigs both in South Africa and hopefully overseas. Mikanic performed and recorded together with a swing orchestra (Schalk Joubert and Riaan Van Rensburg) and these are the guests that all feature on the album: Jamie Jupiter playing the mouth organ on 'Blues', Mike Hardy singing on 'Jeff', Sylvia Mdunyelwa singing on 'Inja', Ernie Deane singing on 'Don't Push'. Ze Music: Bloody hell. No bland tidbits here. Just a cunningly smooth piece of work, with semi-sporadic reggae-ish grooves and amazingly yummy bursts of manic rhythms, funky notes and - hey presto - Africa with a new dress. Mike Rennie is a demon with a heart on a frisky multilingual violin. His voice slips through the back door and takes care of the punctuation in several different fonts. Incredible how this cool dude’s violin mutates into a third arm with a thousand tongues. Nick Turner on guitar and vocals shows you how to get inside their tunes. Way inside. Occasionally his voice turns a bit schizo - one moment high and clear, but on the next bar you get slapped against the head with a raucus roll of stomping macho notes. Watch out for Jamie Jupiter’s harmonica. It teases and tiptoes, but can turn into a high-maintenance bitch just as quickly. Catch a listen in Track 9 to taste the effect. And even the track titles have oomph. 'Inja’. 'Masganja’. 'Sweets’. 'Naked Man’. Track 1 oozes quiet power. 'Don’t Push’. This should be the hit, but not for the empty-headed bubblegum brigade. Its chilling beauty will stay in your head long after you put the CD away. Words with purpose. "Don’t push / Don’t shove / We don’t need no help / Falling in and out of love...." But wait for the girl. Hear her voice ascend to a dizzy height of wordless emotion and hit that hot rush of urgency. Disappear into Track 5. 'Jeff’ is... well... freaking stunning. "I don't need the know-how / You got the energy..." and sharpen your ear for the rest. The harmony gives you light and dark shades, bare hands on drums and fingers on guitar strings give you clear-cut talent. Your best spirit fix without the side-effects. Give Track 7 a listen first - if you’re intrigued by violin insanity and apparently erratic rhythm changes. Then do it again, and it will all make sense. 'Madiba’ on the lekker Track 4 is filled to the brim with the jive. The old Dude should have this in his CD-walkman. The rap works. The voices mix like pap and seshebo. "Slowly / Side to side/ Side to Side / Open up slowly / In the shade of the trees / Gonna buzz from the bees..." It goes quiet for a sec. Then it picks up again with Mike Rennie and that violin strummin’ the stress right out of your bones. "Yamma Madiba Mamadiba Mamadiba..." Laid-back beats in Track 8 - 'Africa My Love’ - soothes those rough suburban edges. Then - some some weird pulse starts talking - sounds like some dude playing harp with a kick-ass spiderweb, a thick rich sound with a throbbing beat that makes your feet walk ways in all directions. This one - hooo boy - this one will nail your ear to the speaker. 'Making Love with the Sunshine’ on Track 9 shows you the nature child. Aahh yes. "I’ve been walking with the insects today..." and shoooosh, you are there. Chilling while you breathe through your eyelids. "Photosynthesising with the green... content and free...". And then, just after the sixth minute, you groove straight into a jazzy vibe, dotted here and there with violin and harmonica. Smoooooth. 'Swimming with the Women'. Each time you listen to this CD you will find new rooms. Utterly lekker to hear so many spicy sounds in each song. Cleverly put together, lyrics with a purpose and ever so slightly freaky in places, but lusciously funky, this one. Bernard is not only a rocker, but a melodist who can craft nice hooky songs as well. Many musicians were Choppers (John Mason, Piet Koen, Franco de Nuzzo, Martin Ledger, Carole Welsh, Bert Askes, Macjek Scheibel, Andre van der Heever, Paul Hughes, Nick Matzukis, and Alastair Broadhead), and some may have been with the band from the Vereeniging beginning, but front man Bernard Binns lived through it all, and he wrote all these songs. On this Retro Fresh release you get twelve studio cuts and two live tracks of excellent Eighties rock (For me, music doesn't become dated like haircuts; I consider the musical era as another stylistic aspect when seeking something to match my mood). Talk about radio-friendly, the first time I heard 'Mysteries and Jealousy' on the 'Sharp Cuts' series I was singing along halfway through, then for two days after had the song for a mind lodger. 'Watch Out' (Live, and Bernard tells the audience right, this is a rocker). 'Kissing for Pleasure' a sweet rock song, without being cloying. 'Whisper Your Secrets' is another stays in one's mind. 'Come and Dance', races almost frenetically. These and ten other songs fill this CD with classic and, for the most part, energetic synthpop rock. Most of the songs are up-tempo movers, crowd pleasers, with a few slower numbers to please the lovers wanting to dance close. The lyrics sometimes repeat a tad long in the fade, but remain pleasurable listening. Pleasurable instrumental surprises await, as well. I'm not deliberately leaving out the other Choppers musos, but it's easy to think of Binns as the consistent force in the band because, well, because he was. 'The Best of the Helicopters' and Binns's solo 'Physiognomy of the Soul' (an excellent work of wide rock range, from gentle to hardest rocking songs) make a good double bill. 'The Best of the Helicopters' is another valuable, and fun, Retro Fresh release. Binns started out talented and polished, has matured as an artist, and can still be occasionally caught in concert. Cool, smooth, urbane, and rocking, of course. Joe Alves and Chris Ghelakis had been in the group Syndicate who had been regulars at the Thunderdome club in Johannesburg. Neil McKellar completed the lineup. This early Eighties AOR group produced one eponymous album which spawned 2 top 20 hits. The band play easy going rock, with Weddephol's high pitched (but not screechy) vocals soaring over some pretty mean guitar playing. At times the vocal harmonies have shades of the Bee Gee's falsettos while the music varies from post disco funky rock to blues tinged ZZ Top rock. 'When You Gonna Love Me', the second single off the album being a good example of the former while 'Can't Find It Anymore' is a great example of the latter that would have bearded Texans and Texans called Beard nodding approval along to some of the guitar riffs. The tunes are catchy and varied. The obligatory rock ballad comes in the form of 'Baby's Not An Angel' with it's sensitive verses growing into a lighter waving, sing along with the band chorus while the other single 'Shouldn't Fall in Love' is Bohemian Rhapsody-ish with a number of changes in style during the song. The spacey, bongo driven intro melts into a bouncing piano led chorus. About halfway through, there's the Wayne's World head banging in the car scene as Joe Alves is let loose on his guitar to soaring effect. A couple of tracks meander a bit. 'Do You Love Me a Lot' sounds quite dated, while 'I Want You Babe' has got B-Side written all over it. However, these are the only 2 tracks that don't really make the grade (the former being a marginal fail). 'City Limits' does not push any boundaries or break any barriers. The group stays within the safe areas of the suburbs of rock. That said, they do stay in a really nice house in a nice neighbourhood. The neighbours sometimes complain about the noise, but that's only when they're not invited to the party. And it was packed - I'm sure if another 50 people showed up the place would burst. Threefifty played pretty well even though Brett said it was the worst show he had ever played. It was also their first full set with Hugh their new trumpeter and it sounded quite styling. While Sweet Victory were setting up I had a chat with Andrew from Leek and waded my way through the masses of people to get to the toilet only to find out when I got there that they were non operational. But it was no problem coz Sweet Victory stared playing and I immediately forgot about my full bladder and started a skank pit in a 2 meter squared area with about 20 other guys which was an experience. Sweet Victory played quite well considering that they didn't have a monitor (it got stood on by the crazy skankers) and provided a hugely entertaining set. Next up were the guys from Leek A.T.B.U and they kicked so much ass. They played lots of stuff from 'Roll The Dice' and some of their older stuff. Jacob is a legend and he held the whole horn section together brilliantly, I was quite worried that they would not sound the same since they lost the trumpet, but the trombone did just fine and gave the whole band a very original sound. ------ GIGS ------ Jeffrey's Bay - Tues 17 Dec - Billabong Skate Park (R10 - free after 11pm - starts at 9pm) The Lonely Skanker Tour * New World Inside * Fuzigish * Sibling Rivalry * Fine Forest Dwellers (Local) * Leafroy (Local) * Beer Big Mug (Local) * BGF (Local) PE - Wed 18 Dec - Shark Pier Yacht Club Lonely Skanker Tour * Fuzigish * New World Inside Knysna - Wed 18Dec - Al's (R20, 9pm) AK Massive Tour * AK Massive * Arcane Johannesburg Wed 18 Dec - Roxy's Rythem Bar (R15, 8:30pm) Punk/Rock Party *Remedy *Beyond the Pale Table View - Thur 19 Dec - Whammy Bar (R20, 9pm) AK Massive Tour * AK Massive * Kelvin Declined Cape Town - Fri 20 Dec - Mercury Live (ex-The Jam) (R20, 9pm) Lonely Skanker Tour * Fuzigish * New World Inside * Hog Hoggidy Hog Rondebosch Fri 20 Dec - Barney's (R20, 9pm) AK Massive Tour * AK Massive * Arcane Cape Town - Sat 21 Dec - Mercury Live (ex-The JAM) (R20, 9pm) AK Massive Tour * AK Massive * BOO! * Dorp All gig & tour info to Daniel at: mailto:daniel@sarockdigest.com?subject=gigs _________________________________________ 7.HISTORY & TRIVIA ------------------- SPRINGBOK RADIO CHARTS http://rock.co.za/charts This week [Last week] Title - Artist 30 YEARS AGO (15 December 1972) 1 [1] I Can See Clearly Now - Johnny Nash 2 [2] Mouldy Old Dough - Lieutenant Pigeon 3 [5] A Shoulder To Cry On - Denise Freeman 4 [6] I Need Someone - Alan Garrity 5 [7] Hello-A - Sharon Tandy & Billy Forrest 25 YEARS AGO (16 December 1977) 1 [1] Barracuda - Heart 2 [2] Buccaneer - McCully Workshop 3 [3] I Need You - Joe Dolan 4 [4] I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You) - Margaret Singana 5 [6] From New York To L.A. - Patsy Gallant 20 YEARS AGO (18 December 1982) 1 [1] Words - FR David 2 [2] Come On Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners 3 [5] The Clapping Song - Belle Stars 4 [4] Heart Attack - Olivia Newton-John 5 [12] I Don't Wanna Dance - Eddy Grant 15 YEARS AGO (19 December 1987) 1 [1] La Bamba - Los Lobos 2 [2] Never Gonna Give You Up - Rick Astley 3 [5] You Win Again - Bee Gees 4 [3] Funky Town - Pseudo Echo 5 [4] It's A Sin - Pet Shop Boys Alan Garrity's 'I Need Someone' bounced back into the top 5 for the 3rd time, but despite a 29 week run in the charts during the year (a record for a South African act), the song was only listed as number 20 for the year. Billy Forrest and Sharon Tandy finally made it into the top 5 after having floated around number 6 and 7 for 4 weeks. 'I Can See Clearly Now' equalled Daniel Boone's record for number of weeks at number 1 by a song as it entered it's 10th week at the top. Boone had spent 10 weeks at number 1 earlier in 1972 with 'Beautiful Sunday'. McCully Workshop where still held off the top spot by Heart, but the 'Buccaneer' would top the charts in the last week of the year. Canadian Patsy Gallant was enjoying her only top 20 hit with 'From New York to L.A.'. The song had made number 6 in the UK, but did not chart in the US. Eddy Grant was not the only Guyanan to chart in SA. His step brother Rudy Grant had brushed the lower reaches of the Top 20 with a cover of Stevie Wonders 'Lately' in 1981. 'I Don't Wanna Dance' was Eddy Grant's 2nd top 20 hit and first top 5 hit. 'Do You Feel My Love' had just missed the top 5, peaking at 6 in 1981. 'La Bamba' was at number 1 in 1987 for the 9th week running. This run would end the following week when Rick Astley would finally grab the top spot in the final chart of the year. The Bee Gees climbed a couple of places, while Michael Jackson and Spagna (anyone remember 'Call Me'?) where lurking outside the top 5. First came the untimely and tragic death of Sweatband guitarist John Mair on the eve of the album's reissue, and now the sad news of the passing of Freedom's Children vocalist Brian Davidson in Thailand on December 4. Owen Coetzer heads back down the music time machine to remember... The kid, he came from Hazareth, He was his father's only son... And when he came out from Hazareth he was a hell hound on the run... and rode the electronic waves of the eclectic Astra music storm like a victorious white knight into South African music history. Now the kid is no more... Brian Davidson, the miasmic toe-curling power behind South African 70s super group Freedom's Children, and its seminal album Astra is dead, his ashes already scattered by Buddhist rite in Thailand, where he lived and where he died, and will be in this country, when she arrives, by his partner, Michele. The energetic prancer as vocalist in the Lancaster Band, as its members galvanised an audience in the Observatory Town Hall in the 1980s has gone, and there is desolation among those who once formed the Brian Davidson band in the 1990s. And minute, telling obituary notices in the newspapers this week. The unbelievable had happened - the kid was gone. Latter Davidson wasn't my kind of music, and the last time I saw him live was, indeed, at that Observatory gig when I worked for John Osher's Music Maker magazine as their Cape Town correspondent. But I "spoke" with him some months ago, via the CIA's electronic gift to the world, e-mail, when I was writing the liner notes to the CD re-issuing of Freedom's Children's second electronic masterpiece, 'Galactic Vibes' - a task undertaken by Benjy Mudie, an old rocker whose Retro company is re-mastering and resurrecting heroic bands like Hawk, Otis Waygood, and the once nasty puking punkers, Suck, among others. And 'Astra'. Brian Davidson was 'Astra' - and 'Astra' was the greatest "concept" album ever to emerge in this country from the fertile, electronic experimental mind of Julian Laxton. Concept albums were the creation of the 1970s - everyone was doing them. 'Astra' - swathes of sweeping, strong melody lines, and freaky, twirling sounds, took the country by storm. It was light years from anything ever produced here before. Laxton told me this week: "It was done on a four-track, plus two track and two metre echo-plate. By pushing and pulling and plugging and unplugging and using my magic box (a combination of early synthesiser, phlanger and echolette) and spending 72 hours without sleep, we managed to produce it. "It cost an enormous amount of emotion and we broke every recording rule in the book. In the end we had sounds that nobody had ever heard, or produced, in this country before. But because the tracks on the tapes were limited we had to layer and layer and layer overdubs. And because there was no noise reduction, we created a sort of musical mystical mist of sound - it became synonymous with us." Barclay James Harvest produced similar concept stuff in 1969. Genesis did 'Trespass' in 1970. Deep Purple did 'The Book of Taliesyn' the same year. The Nice turned into Emerson, Lake and Palmer, in 1970, experimenting with similar sounds. Kraftwerk began sending loops of sound through tapes in the middle of 1970. Tangerine Dream began their experimentation in 1970 with 'Electronic Meditation'; the Moody Blues did 'Days of Future Passed' and the Strawbs (with Rick Wakeman) produced 'Dragonfly'. Freedom's were a part of that international wave of sound experimentation. But they were stuck in South Africa, a land writhing with political discontent, and cultural embargoes. Effectively it could be said that apartheid ended Freedom's burgeoning, brilliant life. They should have, indeed, been in London. Instead, they were banned from playing there. The British Musicians' Union was far too strong to defy. But there had also been discontent in the Freedom ranks. Gigantic Ramsay McKay, rising like a bearded warrior of old from the Scottish Highlands, had tried to impose too much control on the production of 'Astra'. He blustered and wanted to run the show - but ended up playing bass and expounding a long Celtic poem on the last track. "Everyone thinks," Brian Davidson wrote to me the other day, "that it was Ramsay's voice all over 'Astra'. I confess - it was mine. Ramsay did bass and the poem, that's all" Davidson was 'Astra' - 'Astra' was Davidson. Freedom's, stunned by the album's success, made another called 'Galactic Vibes' - after McKay had stormed out of the studio and the group, leaving a relieved Nicholas Maartens, who had done keyboard, and engineered the production amid the McKay fireworks. So what, I asked Brian, did he remember about Freedom's and 'Galactic Vibes'? Not much, came his reply - and then followed with a 300 word essay that read like a novella. The not much turned into a great lot. "The album took no time at all to record. Single takes were the name of the game. Jules (Laxton) was absolutely superb in everything he touched. Barry Irwin (bass) and Colin Pratley (drums) slotted in perfectly. It just came flowing out. "Jules just used, as usual, his magic box to get the most amazing sounds again, and he played acoustic guitar on all tracks, as well as electric. We combined the EMI orchestral division on some of the tracks and that also worked out wonderfully. "I really loved the album. I had the freedom to sing what I wanted, how I wanted. Jules brought the chords and I brought the voice. This simple, free partnership paved the way to the album. I'm very pleased about the way it's being presently handled. "I'm teaching English in Thailand, at a secondary school full time and also singing with a great Thai blues band. I'll be in South Africa soon on holiday". Now only Michele will be coming. Yet 'Galactic Vibes' is an intriguing and compelling experiment in sound, as was 'Astra'. Even some 30 years after it was recorded and issued on Parlophone vinyl, its apparent casual exploration of inventive technology can be said to have lipped the very periphery of the maelstrom of new sounds only today being refined. The result, then, was an extraordinary one for the times. And can't be repeated, despite the new wave of frightening, sophisticated digital technology. It can't ever be equaled either. The ambiance - the ethos - would be annihilated. Even a casual examination of what emanated from the flying fingers of Messers Laxton, Irwin and Pratley so long ago leaves today's listener dry-mouthed and brerathless. I saw Freedoms often. I wrote about them. I talked to them. I edited, in the early 1970s, a weekly pop tabloid journal called Trend for the then Natal Daily News. It was a music publication. Nothing else. And I watched Davidson catapault all over the stage using his microphone stand as an axe to chop amps, organs and P.A. speakers. What happened on every stage in Durban was what mattered to the magazine. We did Scatby Hud, Abstract Truth, Suck, Band of Gypsies, Flames, Hocus, Humphrey, Third Eye, Wild Youth. We did Hawk and Otis. A host of others, too. And Freedom's Children. But a really close examination of what they were doing never entered my mind. Then. It was just raw energy, fanned by Laxton's incredible lead guitar, inflamed by Pratley's powerful drums, scorched by Davidson's voice and completed by Irwin's stunning bass. Now we just remember... Said Benjy Mudie today: "Brian Davidson strode like a giant in the world of rock music, first with the seminal Freedom's Children whose albums Astra and Galactic Vibes are rightfully hailed as classic psychedelic milestones, and later with groups like the Lancaster Band, The Council (with Kevin Shirley) and his own Brian Davidson Band. "He was a remarkable singer with an incredible vocal range and stage presence whose influence on a generation of rock musicians cannot be underestimated. Brian contributed so much to the reissue of 'Galactic Vibes'. "Brian was a true 'son of the soil', a phenomenal musician whose work will live on in music. "He is mourned by friends, family and fans alike and is deeply missed by Ramsay McKay, Colin Pratley and Julian Laxton - and me." The biggest accolade comes, however, from the biggest independent record producer in the world - ex Johannesburger Clive Calder, now living in New York, and producing the likes of Britney Spears the same way he produced South African stars like Richard John Smith. Of Freedom's Calder says: "I was working for EMI. I was 23, and I wanted to manage them - take them overseas and show the world South Africa's finest - Davidson, Laxton, Irwin and Pratley. It was not to be because of political pressure, but in my opinion they were then, and still are today, the only group that could have taken the international music world by storm..." Cheers, Brian. We have set up a website devoted to the SA radio adaptations of the action series The Avengers. Research into this series has not been attempted before in any depth, so our website is something of an exclusive. Take a look here: http://theavengers.tv/radioavengers/ The original recordings were missing for decades and we have spent the last few years recovering and restoring as many of them as we have been able to locate. The series ran from December 1971 until 1974 and we reckon that the 20 serials we have found represent about a third of the series output. The recordings are not of broadcast quality, but are certainly audible. They're entertaining and are of historical interest both to fans of "The Avengers" and those interested in the much missed Springbok Radio service. We have a couple of dead ends that we would appreciate any help with. These are to work out a series chronology and episode listing with transmission dates for each serial and also to hopefully find more programmes. As you will see from the section titled 'The Programmes' we have made efforts, but are not entirely sure about which periodicals to check now. Is there anyone who can help with any further information on the series? Those of you who are unaware of anything that might help but who are interested to hear the programmes may be interested to know that the restored recordings (as they become available) are offered for download at www.rlsuth.com, which also contains many other South African radio programme downloads.
