A 'Half Time Achievement' award is to be presented to him by sasounds.com and The Star Tonight in association with 5FM, Replay and Solid Rock Productions. The 'Half Time Achievement' award, as opposed to a "life time achievement award" honours people who have spent a large amount of their life working for the betterment of SA music. Barney Simon was the first DJ on 5FM to play every successful South African rock band from No Friends of Harry, Dog Detachment, Psycho Reptiles to Springbok Nude Girls, Lithium, Boo! Squeal, Sugardrive, and more recently, Seether and Tweak. Barney also actively supports local gigs and is also a familiar face at almost every major rock festival in South Africa. He also helps facilitate relationships between bands and record companies. Overall Barney plays sixty South African songs in his nightly slot between 10pm and 1am, Monday to Thursdays on 5FM. His current show is 'The Night Zoo'. This prestigious award ceremony takes place in the form of a huge 'Rock 'n Roll' party on Wed 11 December at Carfax, 39 Pim Street, Newtown. Aside from the awards ceremony, the bands performing tributes to Barney include Martin Rocka and the Sick Shop, Rob McLennan (No Friends of Harry), Pestroy, Plum, N8ive and Sugardrive and others tba. Tickets are R60 and limited to 1000 people and are available from www.sasounds.com. Proceeds go to the PDSA (Peoples Dispensary for Sick Animals) as nominated by Barney Simon. Issued by: www.sasounds.com ------------------- WHAT IS 'PROJECT ART'? 'Project Art' is an experimental acoustic rock/folk/alternative/funk band put together by singer-songwriter Art Matthews and guitarist Alec Bridges in August 2002 as an alternative interpretation of Art's commercial writing that has helped his South African band, Just Jinger, sell more than 200,000 albums in their home country alone. Art has been living in Los Angeles since January 2002, where he has been writing and pre-producing material for Just Jinger's next album, due for release in early 2003. It was there that he met Alec, who resides in Laguna, California. A strong musical relationship was quickly formed based on a unique understanding of each other's styles and in particular Art's songs. This collaboration has subsequently led to Alec also being included in the Just Jinger line-up. Project Art have been touring South Africa since October, at the same time as the Just Jinger dates. See 'Concerts' below for Project Art and Just Jinger dates. ------------------------ AFRICAN MUSIC STORE MOVES The excellent African Music Store in Long Street, Cape Town is moving premises. From December 1, the shop will be at 134 Long Street, which is 100m up the road from its current location. The African Music Store is SA's only speciality African music retail outlet {Really? - ed} and is moving to these bigger premises where they will continue to promote African music in even better ways. The owners are hoping to soon have a stage for regular in-store live band performances. ------------------------ PIET BOTHA AND JACK HAMMER Die jaar 2002 is amper verby. NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES --------------------------------------- ------ MP3s ------ 'Red Rock City' (Live special edit) - Mac McKenzie and the Goema Captains of Cape Town The full-length version of 'Red Rock City' leads off the just-released 'A Moment In Cape Town' album, which features the first selection of songs recorded live at the Wonder Gigs. This special edit, with thanks to the Wonder label, captures the essence of Mac McKenzie, Hilton Schilder, Alex van Heerden, and the members of the "Goema Captains" weaving a seductive piano accordion tango groove, interspersed with some touches of Cape Jazz, and appropriate orgasmic gasps. The new "Penthoused Goema" sound from Cape Town. (see 'New Releases'). http://www.samp3.com 'Now And Forever' - Sons Of Selassie Some fresh, djembe-laced sounds from Sons Of Selassie, still one of Cape Town's most popular reggae groups. The opening track on the new 'On Track 2002' compilation. http://www.samp3.com 'Don't Push' - Mikanic First single and opening track off 'Swimming With The Women', the debut album from the Sons Of Trout side project Mikanic, featuring Nick Turner (guitar and vox) and Mike Rennie (violin and vox) recorded live at the Wonder Gigs during the year. Ernie Deane wails emotionally all over this lovely, delicate ballad that also appears on the 'A Moment In Cape Town' album. (see 'New Releases'). http://www.samp3.com/rhythm.html 'Babhem' - Intyilo More politico-sentiment over a slow kwaito groove from the group behind Achisa's 'Stop The Violence' EP. http://www.samp3.com 'Psycoparalysis' - Dayspring Dayspring are a four-piece modern rock outfit from Cape Town, consisting of drummer Wesley, guitarist Geoffrey, bassist Celéste and guitarist/vocalist David. 'Psycoparalysis' is a fast-paced rocker with great drumming and a catchy chorus. Listen out for it at a Skatepark near you. Off their soon-to-be-released debut album. http://www.samp3.com 'Meisies Teenspoed' - Akkedis Another thumping track from the Lizard Dudes of Stellenbosch. Klank Rock at its best. http://www.samp3.com/artists.html 'Johnny Sampler' - Falling Mirror A sampler of one of the most under-rated albums in the history of rock; Falling Mirror's 'Johnny Calls The Chemist'. http://www.samp3.com/retrofresh.html 'Inbetween' - Language Language are from Knysna and 'Inbetween' is typical of their gentle, acoustic guitar with sweet harmonies ballad style. http://www.samp3.com 'Maya' - Ken E Henson This track is taken off the new, totally instrumental CD from Ken E Henson, 'Another Time Another Place'. Ken E (or Kenny) has been around since the 60s with bands like Freedoms Children and Abstract Truth and is probably best known for his long collaboration with Brian Finch (as Finch and Henson). http://www.samp3.com ----- CDs ----- 'A MOMENT IN CAPE TOWN' - VARIOUS LIVE (Wonder Label) 'SWIMMING WITH THE WOMEN' - MIKANIC (Rhythm Records) The main intention behind the Wonder Gigs series of live concerts was to capture the musical sparks that would surely fly from these adventurous collaborations between some of Cape Town's older and newer talents. The 13 concerts that made up these two series were the result of a partnership between Afribeat's Struan Douglas and Iain Harris, and Laurence Mitchell and Madoda Mditshwa of the SABC in Cape Town who made their Beach Road Studios and recording facilities available for the series. It wasn't all smooth sailing with the brilliant debut Wonder gig by Blk Sonshine being mostly unrecorded due to a dodgy tape machine. But after that initial hiccup, the rest of the concerts all went off beautifully, and 'One Moment In Cape Town' is the first collection on the Wonder Label of some of the finest 'moments' from those shows. Highlights here include 'Red Rock City', which is Mac McKenzie and the Goema Captains' evocative opening tribute to Cape Town (it has already been dubbed the new 'Manenberg'), Golliwog's sleaze-funky 'Nasty', Ernie's torchy version of 'Amazing Grace', and Blk Sonshine's Neo Muyanga going solo on piano with 'Nalete'. There's also Mikanic's gentle 'Don't Push', and other wondrous contributions from Tribe, Black Noize, Carla Diamonde, Robbie Jansen, Richard Ceasar, and some hard-edged rapping from Devious. Cape Town is flourishing creatively on all fronts, and was again recently named as one of the world's top tourist spots. With perfect timing, 'A Moment In Cape Town' arrives as the city's essential new soundtrack! Tracklisting: Mac McKenzie & The Goema Captains ('Red Rock City'), Ernie ('Amazing Grace'), Neo Muyanga ('Nalete'), Mikanic featuring Ernie and Lee Thomson ('Don't Push'), Richard Ceasar ('Vibin' At Cairo's'), Carla Diamonde and the David Poole Quartet ('Time To Fight'), Black Noize featuring SKY189 ('DJ's Request'), Robbie Jansen and the Sons Of Table Mountain ('Slow Slow'), Golliwog ('Nasty'), Alex van Heerden and Derek Gripper ('Vrou Van Samaria'), The Khoi Khonnextion ('On And On'), Devious ('Ignorance'), Tribe ('Eclipse') A simultaneous release on Rhythm Records is the debut album from Mikanic which features the duo's acclaimed set from the first series of Wonder Gigs. Nick Turner is Mikanic's Robert Plant-lookalike rock-steady acoustic guitarist from Sons Of Trout and Mike Rennie is his violin-playing 'Trouts' bandmate. A casual side jam session a few years back, to explore the two's alternative musical tastes, eventually evolved into Mikanic and an invitation to fill a slot on the Wonder Gigs. The duo's delicate acoustic sound still bears traces of the Sons Of Trout's unusual blend of jazz and folk, but these are all new songs that mostly explore South African themes with intelligent, tuneful arrangements. Tracklisting: 'Don't Push', 'Swimming With The Women', 'Freedom And Happiness', 'Madiba', 'Jeff', 'Naked Man', 'Masaganja', 'Africa My Love', 'Making Love With The Sunshine', 'Inja', 'Sweets'. (SS) ------------------- 'ON TRACK 2002' - VARIOUS There's clearly no shortage of recent compilations of the different music currently being produced and performed in Cape Town. But this first 'On Track' collection also begs your attention by sheer virtue of the extremely diverse material on offer. The On Track Studios are in Claremont and this album exposes a selection of acts who would not normally be keeping company on the same album, nor in some cases even be on an album. There's the dub-lite of the Sons Of Selassie ('Now And Forever', 'Bam Bam', 'Collie Dub'); the yoga chants of Yogesh, the founder of the Yoga Centre, with the catchy 'Jagabambe'; then there's the local busker called Me (actually Jeffrey Solomons) with his hilarious 'Luv Mi Dog'. Special mention to the soft jazz-rock of (the only out-of-towners, from Knysna) Language with 'Inbetween', 'Taal Le Kaal', and 'The Breeze'. So it's a very mixed bunch with Dave Hoko stepping aside from the 'Sons' for his solo 'Opskop', Intyilo (who lost a group member subsequent to these recordings) doing 'Babhem' and 'Kutheni Na', and RICHe + Angie ('Callous') adding some trance electronica to the middle of the album to ensure that no style is neglected. Good one to Derek Organ and the On Track Studios for giving a voice and a platform to some of the more fringe musicians from the Cape Town suburbs, and for one of the more intriguing albums we've heard this year. (SS) ------------------ HEINZ WINCKLER ON THE MOVE! Pop Idols winner Heinz Winckler is about to release his debut solo album, 'One Step Closer', following on from the success of his debut solo single, 'Once In A Lifetime'. Produced by Brian O'Shea (also responsible for 'Idols: The Album' and Heinz's solo single), the 12-track features both 'Once In A Lifetime' and 'Soledad', as well as ten other new songs including 'It's Over', which was co-written by Heinz himself! Lead radio single off the album is 'Next Stop Happiness' which was penned by Australians Clive Young and Sean Ikin. --------------- MORE REVIEWS --------------- More reviews can be found at: Open Record http://www.openrecord.co.za Amuzine http://rock.co.za/reviews.htm ______________________________________ 4.USA FOR AFRICA ------------------ Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music 'HERO OF HEROES' - BRIAN FINCH (3rd Ear) Biker folk rock? Brian Finch rides a bike and is a family man, and he sings universal, personal songs full of guitars and percussion. Here's a man of the same age and place in life as I am, on this personal album. The title track, 'Hero of Heroes' sets the high standard the other songs match. "Like Freedom's Children on the run" "Heroes ride high" and "Heroes never die." Cool song. 'Orang Otang' -- Haven't heard a bad version of this song, and this one is excellent, and new somewhat more laid back than any we've heard before. Snappy percussion, too. 'Remember' -- Do I ever remember past times, past loves. And here is the true longing, yearning, and wistful recollection that I feel when memory-tripping back to a certain lost someone. Brian's honest voice come from the heart. 'Tansy' -- A song from a father to his daughter. My son will go out and experience the things that will make him the man he is going to be after relearning in the world the lessons I taught him. But how to let my daughter go? You sing it exactly, Brian. 'South Carolina' has the line, "Drinking with my brother in South Carolina" and I think, "I sure wish I was drinking with my brother in South Carolina." This song brings to mind late nights sitting or standing around campfires, cold ones in hand. Places change, such as Greenwich Village in the refrain, but brothers are forever. 'Freedom/Motherless Child' is a blend of two classic songs done with driving percussion and guitars, ending in the pantheon of African nations and the cry "Freedom!" A powerful song, one that lifts the heart with hope, it really does. Brian leaves us laughing with the positively funny 'Positively No Bob Dylan' wherein we learn he will play Bob Dylan. Everybody must to get to a favorite place. Freewheelin' Brian. A personal album? Sure, these songs, and the four others, are probably personal favorites for Brian, but more importantly, 'Hero of Heroes' is a personal album for me. I scored another lekker record the other day what I wanted to tell yous about. It was so lekker to find this record it was like that ou Carpay Die-Um in the movie with Robbie Williams where he sees the day. I like saw the light. The record is by the ous called the Cherry Faced Lurchers and is about when they went to live at Jamesons. Does anyone know where Jamesons is hey? I've been as far as Springs, but have never come across a town called Jamesons. Anyways the record sounds like it's recorded in a Café cause the band just like starts playing then the Greek owner of the Café starts taking orders for chips and stuff. Bleddy rude if you ask me (can I say Bleddy on the Inta net?). But when everyone's got their graze, the band starts playing proper like. And can these ous jam or what. Hey I just thought maybe like Jamesons is one of those crypt tick things like maybe it means Jamming sons that the ous have just changed a bit? That's one of those clever playing words things hey. There's this one song called 'R45 Perm' what I think is about those curly bits of road where you get on and off the R45 highway between Boksburg and Benoni. That's like great imaginary saying curly roads is like curly hair. Another really lekker song is 'Do the Lurch' what starts slow and then speeds up and the band goes ape, especially the drummer. The ou what sings sounds like old James Phillips, he was from Springs you know. The ou on the record can't sing like Bone Ou from You Too or ous like that, but he sings with lots of passions. It's like listening to one of your china's doing one of those Carry Ou Key things, but only many betters. One of my china's charfed me that when bands play in Café's and such like, there is a law as to how big the stage can be. He charfed me that this was called the Group Areas Act. Is this true? I wreckon that these Cherry Faced ous would not have like this law if they is anything like me as when I put this record on I put it on full blast and just like jump round my room madly till my toppie or tannie tells me to shut up. Then I go out crewsing with my china's. I'm off now to go do some wheelies on the R45 Perm. Check yous sometime hey. Ello ello.... how is everyone? Well to catch up, Fuzigish has been skanking fat and punking hard across Europe. We have been from Denmark to Switzerland, Belgium to Austria and from Germany to our present location: Sunny UK!!! To say it has been an adventure of epic proportions so far would be an understatement. What it has definitely been is amazing and intense and, well, just plain rock n' roll! Late nights and loud music. We looking forward to returning to South Africa and we have made great friends on our visit. Our last continental show was at this club in East Germany called the East Club in Bishopswerda. We played after Yellow Cap - a local ska reggae crossover band - it was a good show! During our travels we managed to play with The Selector, Heideroosjes, The Shandon, Skaladin, Plenty Enuff, Regatta 69, Skaos and Skin of Tears to mention a few. We also managed to hook up with Strung Out in Amsterdam at their show. They were really cool and got us in for free and then gave us some merchandise! We spoke to the guys about sunny SA, touring and future plans. They played an awesome show and they know how to party! At the show we also watched The Start and Sparta ('At the Drive In's' side project), it was a rocking evening. Another rocking evening saw the band hanging with the manager of punk legends, The Exploited. We stayed at his house, drinking and smoking till the wee hours. What a rocker! Ok so we are finally in the UK and our tour dates have shifted a bit and changed. Sorry about this but it has been beyond control. We would love to see you all there for some Fat Ska Beatings and ales! Don't miss us on our South African tour with special guests New Worlds Inside. Sun and punk rock! GREEN ONIONS (FRIED OR CHILLED) part 3 of 4 Strangely the infectious hook never charted in the Sixties and took 17 years to reach the UK Top 10. Admittedly, Atlantic Records had slipped up by failing to recognise that the instrumental Memphis Sound had conjured a bluesy dance fashion in the Sixties. The 'Green Onions' single was released on Atlantic Records in March 1967, backed by the badly recorded 'Bootleg'. The 'Green Onions' riff became fashionable during the Mod revival in the Seventies and found itself included on the 'Quadrophenia' soundtrack by The Who. It was re-issued as a single in 1979 and cracked the UK Top 10. This was largely due to Steve Cropper and 'Duck' Dunn joining the Blues Brothers and featuring in the film of the same name. It again re-surfaced in 1985 on Old Gold Records, this time backed by 'Chinese Checkers'. Some of the definitive versions of 'Green Onions' were featured on albums by Georgie Fame ('Fame At Last'), the Ventures ('Lonely Bull'), and King Curtis ('Memphis Hits'). The rhythm was copped by the Rolling Stones and entitled 'Stoned' and issued as a B-side to 'I Wanna Be Your Man' (Lennon & McCartney). The rhythm would move from generation to generation starting with the Blues Brothers ('Made in America' - 1980), Johnny Thunders (eponymous album 1982), and the acid jazz 'Penthouse Suite' (1990) by the James Taylor Quartet. Odd in that it consisted of Nigel Fletcher and the mother and son duo of Rob and Hilda Woodward. Hilda who played piano was in her fifties when 'Mouldy Old Dough' was released. The song made it to the top of the charts in the UK and entered the SA top 5 this week in 1972. Heart took over the top spot from Joe Dolan in 1977. 'Barracuda' had only made number 11 in their native US. Interestingly, the songs that did really well for them in the US in the mid 80's ('Never' and 'These Dreams' in particular) did not make the SA charts. 1982 saw Dexy's Midnight Runners move into the top slot with 'Come on Eileen'. It also saw an unlikely hit from Frenchman FR David. 'Words' even cracked the Europhobic UK charts, reaching number 2 there. Frida was Anni-Frid Lyngstad from Abba who where in the process of breaking up. Frida teamed up with Genesis drummer and frontman Phil Collins who produced and banged the drums on the single. Los Lobos enjoyed their 6th week at the top with the Richie Valens hit 'La Bamba'. Valens' original had only made 22 and 49 in the US and UK respectively. With the aid of a movie about Valens' life simply called 'La Bamba', Los Lobos took the song to the top of the charts in the US, the UK and SA. They are all available at One World and make great Christmas gifts. ROCKING AGAINST THE SYSTEM If you where anywhere near a radio in South Africa during the eighties, you will probably be familiar with the tracks on 'Rocking Against The System'. This is an album jam packed with classic tracks from a highly creative time in South African music. The track list reads like a Who's Who of SA Rock from that turbulent decade. Be it the afropop of éVoid, Bright Blue and Via Afrika, the new romantic sounds of the Helicopters, the alternative rock of No Friends of Harry and Dog Detachment, or the punky sounds of the Asylum Kids and Peach, they are all represented here. Lovingly released by Benjy Mudie's Retro Fresh label, this album is perfect for those who were there wanting to travel down memory lane, or for those who missed the 80's, this is a good insight into the decade's best. And now with Benjy's re-release programme in full swing, must of the albums from which these tracks are taken are now available (or will soon be available) on CD. This performance was part of their current month-long nationwide tour. Although they have appeared together at festivals around the country for many years, this was the first time that local audiences had the opportunity to see them together on stage. And what a treat it was. Credit goes to the tireless efforts of "Mr and Mrs Folk Music of East London", Ed and Marilyn Johnson, for ensuring that we are kept on the map when it comes to top class South African acts. Dave started off with 'On One Of Those Rare Sunny Days', a song he wrote in Scotland, followed by an instrumental named after New Street in Grahamstown ("where I got stoned, but not the kind of stoned you are thinking of, I mean literally stoned!") So he dazzled us with one brilliant song after the next, each with a small tantalising non-explanatory explanation which either tailed off with a fiendish grin or a chuckle. There was 'Living in the Shelter' ("I've tried to figure out what it's about, but I can't!"). Next we were taken to Amsterdam and London but then brought back to Africa in poignant, intricately woven rhythms, which stayed in my head for a few days after. "I close my eyes when I play," explains Dave, "It makes me hear better. Too much Rock 'n Roll made me deaf in one ear, so I need all the help I can get!" Dave's songs are life stories, about real people and incidents along the way, and his audiences are privileged to be afforded this intimate peek into his living diary ("This one is about a friend who used to bring his baby to band practice. Baby used to go to sleep in the bass drum. But it was removed before practice started!" or "you often hear that people can't drive in the rain, so this song is about people like that. I had an accident the day I wrote it, so I don't write songs about driving any more!"). Steve came on for his solo set, dedicating it to friends and musicians Johannes Kerkorrel and John Mair, who both died tragically this month. His nylon string guitars, hand crafted by master luthier Mervyn Davis of Broederstroom, are in total sound contrast to Dave's bright steel. Steve's fingers do the talking, and he doesn't do much announcing between songs. In fact, he generally pushes the microphone well out of the way and gets on with the job. Absolute master of percussive effects, his guitar becomes a washboard and drum kit all in one as he taps, scratches and slaps it while still bringing out all these intriguing African and Spanish rhythms. "Who is playing bass?" someone in the audience mused. Well, that would be Steve too. He played 'Classical Gas', without which no Steve Newman show would be complete for me, before calling Dave back for their combined set. There was a nice blend of instrumental and vocal numbers, more real-life numbers from Dave: "If you know nothing about sailing and you like get into a boat and go, then you are sailing into Uncharted Waters". There is another song, an "East London" song, about someone who got arrested for "drinking wine in a park." Well, two dudes of this calibre would be justified in being big headed about their talents, but they are not. They treat their audience like old friends, as indeed they are. "As far as I'm concerned the audience and support for the music in East London has to be amongst the best in the country, not only that, when most of the people know the material it makes the show even more gratifying to do", says Dave. This was music for musicians, and everyone went home inspired and satisfied. ----------------- RECOMMENDED GIGS ----------------- ANTON GOOSEN Nov 29: "Barney's - Loch Logan Waterfront" (Anton & Albert Frost) Bloemfontein 083 453 6100 Des 1: "Festival of the Eclipse" (solo) - Musina Kontak: Mack Lesufi - 083 3105602 Des 28: "Tassenberg Struisbaai Music Festival" (solo) -Struisbaai - onbevestig Des 31: "Mossel bay Santos Beach New Years Festival"(band) Kontak: Dirk Uys - 021-886 6642 Read http://www.rock.co.za/files/goosen_index.html Listen http://www.samp3.com/artists_e_k.html http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&searchfor=anton goosen ---------------- BAFO BAFO Bafo Bafo results from the synthesis of both these musicians' diverse contributions. Syd Kitchen's eclectic use of musical elements that traverse everything from Celtic, Afrikaans, jazz, Cajun, Eastern and African influences is balanced and complemented by Madala Kunene's uncanny ability to develop a Maskanda groove that burrows itself into your consciousness. Kitchen plays nylon and steel string acoustic guitars, recorders, hosepipe flute, percussion, and sings. Kunene plays steel string acoustic guitars, mouth bow, and sings. All the music is organically co-written and sung in Zulu, English and Fanigalo (urban slang). At a time in Africa's history when serious moves are afoot (such as the NEPAD initiative and the formation of the African Union) to liberate the continent from the shackles of a past tainted with Colonial oppression and economic marginalization, the ancestors give us Bafo Bafo and their magical 100% halaal, Afro-Saxon sonic parables of possibility. One of their songs says "manje isikhathi sesifikile" ("now is the time, and it is here"). It is Bafo Bafo time. It is Africa's time. Bafo Bafo will be in Cape Town from December 2 - 9.
