The band proved this with a blazing performance at the recent Heritage concert in Gauteng, with John Mair on guitar and Wendy Oldfield on vocals. Oldfield has been very busy despite her new family obligations. She appeared on the Mondetta album from 2001, and has just released 'Holy Water', her new album on the SAFM label. The 11-track album includes a reworking of the song 'Sun' off the Mondetta album, and an additional mix of 'Sun' by Marius Brouwer. Other potential singles are 'Touch Your Skin' and the title track. 'Holy Water' was produced by Wendy Oldfield and Neal Snyman and features musicians like Douglas Bean on guitar and backing vocals, Tigger Reunert on acoustic guitar, Concorde Nkabinde on bass, and Riaan Van Rensburg and Barry van Zyl sharing drum duties. The full tracklisting is: 'Life', 'Rain Won't Come', 'Holy Water', 'Touch Your Skin', 'Heaven', 'Sun', 'Knocking At The Door', 'How Come', '(I Got) A Little Way To Go', 'Sun (Poplanet mix)' 'Holy Water (Temple mix)'. The 'Johnny Calls The Chemist' production is semi-autobiographical, and is a wacky and entertaining story of a naive musician's adventures in New York, and features old and new Falling Mirror songs. Falling Mirror have been enjoying renewed popularity following the recent release of their albums 'Johnny Calls The Chemist', 'Zen Boulders', and 'The Storming Of The Loft' for the first time on CD, on the RetroFresh label. Nielen has been concentrating on writing scripts and novellas, including his soon to be published personal lyrical memoirs called 'Through the Mirror'. Bookings are essential. Call: 021 788 6967. These ten young musicians from Langa in the Cape have been pursuing their musical dreams since forming in late-2001, and have just released their debut album, 'African Rhythms'. Abavuki (meaning "Wake up early birds") uses a fusion of marimbas, trumpets, trombones, congas, and African drums on both original and traditional compositions to produce an effervescent live performance, now captured on CD. The band appeared earlier this year alongside Starkravingsane on the Robin Auld end-of-tour gig at the Riverclub. The group has a regular slot in a Long Street restaurant, and Robin Auld added them to his bill after hearing a rough recording of the group's live sound. This first official album was recorded live in around three hours in St. James Anglican Church by Frank Smuts, and was produced by Beverley Gough, the group's mentor and manager. The 14-track album includes covers of 'Cantaloupe Island', Hugh Masekela's 'Johannesburg', a little Puccini on 'Libiamo' and many of the group's original songs. Abavuki are launching 'African Rhythms' at The Drum Café in Gardens on Thursday 24 October (8pm), with Starkravingsane as support. ---------------------- THE RETURN OF DORP Three and a half years after swapping South African sun for London gloom, The Dorp boys from Somerset West have made a breakthrough with an international record deal. Dorp left Cape Town in March 1999 after touring constantly and releasing three albums. Although critically acclaimed, the band never quite achieved the commercial success that they deserved. The feeling was that the more sophisticated English market was better suited to their style and intentions. After playing The Fierce Festival in Brixton, London, Dorp were approached with a management deal by Festival organizers, Interactive Management. Headed up by Jo Cerrone, this UK firm has worked extensively and successfully with emerging bands and Indie record labels in the UK in the past. Once the management deal was closed, it was not long before Jo's hard work and contacts resulted in an offer from a record company. Now signed to Kennel Records, Dorp are busy in the studio putting the finishing touches to their first official UK single release, 'The System', and working on the beginnings of an album. Their sound has changed quite a bit since they last lived in SA. The original boere-Ska influenced beats have been changed with the addition of a strong technological drum and bass and hip hop influence, although Pieter Bezuidenhout's darkly humorous lyrics and delivery remain a strong feature. The band has mutated and survived in London with only South Africans Pieter Bezuidenhout and Kevin Kiewswetter left from the original line-up that landed in London. They are joined by Fred Caiou and Rob Driver to complete Dorp's new look line-up Dorp are releasing their first single to South Africa ahead of the UK release date, and are returning for a nationwide gig and promotional tour. The single is being pitched to national and regional radio stations around the country, and the band will be doing interviews with radio stations, magazine sand newspapers prior to, and during, their tour of South Africa. In December they will tour the country in the company of Boo!, another well-known South African export. NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES --------------------------------------- ------ MP3s ------ PHRINGE - 'NEED' I don't know how the members of the Johannesburg band Phringe finally settled on 'Need' as the first single off their upcoming diverse (and well-titled), album, 'Mellow Drama'. Sure, 'Need' is a radio-friendly rock ballad with an infectious chorus, but it had to beat off strong challenges from the stirring opening track, 'New Heart', and other excellent songs like 'Dry', 'Spirit Song', and 'Download' (which would also be an appropriate mp3 release). But 'Need' got the vote from band members Bruce Dennill, Antony Adelaar, Kate Dennill, Cliff Wright, and Nic Tudor and is a very worthy taster for this highly recommended album, due out in the next few weeks. (SS) Read http://rock.co.za/legends/2000plus/phringe.html Listen http://www.samp3.com/artists_l_s.html McCULLY WORKSHOP - 'SHE' & 'BUCCANEER (1998 version)' 'She' is a superb Beatlesque track, recorded by the reformed McCully Workshop in 1998, and would not be out of place on an Oasis album. That begs the question why Oasis sells millions of CDs and this track is ignored? Even by South African radio programmers! 'She' is one of the songs on the 12-track 'Buccaneer' compilation CD released in 1998. The McCully brothers (Mike and Tully) decided to rework some of their classic songs and record some new ones. They went into Tully's renowned Spaced-Out Sound studios in Cape Town in 1998 and a while later they emerged with a freshened-up version of their 1978 chart-topper ‘Buccaneer’. The original late 70s band members, Richard Black (lead guitar and vocals) and Rupert Mellor (keyboards and vocals) were recalled to help flesh out these songs. Mike McCully played drums and Tully handled the guitar, bass and vocals while Kevin Gibson (drums) and ex-Falling Mirror guitarist Allan Faull helped out as well. McCully Workshop have lost none of the spark that made them one of SA's greatest pop/rock bands and 'She' is a great example of how good they still are at writing and playing catchy, listenable pop/rock songs. Ade's in-between song patter and song selection offer a glimpse into the issues and sounds of the current South African 21sst Century urban scene. The music features a broad selection of hot, new SA musical sounds and styles, from kwaito to homegrown interpretations of hip hop, R&B, trip hop, dance and others. The lead track is Ishmael's 'Jo'burg City' tribute, alongside Zola's smash hit 'Mdlwembe', Ernie's skanking 'Praha Paradise', Sifiso Sudan's evcocative 'Rise Again' (with its opening highveld thunderstorm), 'Jah Love' from MoodPhase 5ive, the township-rooted 'Mapodisa' from Brothers Of Peace, and other contributions from Felix Laband ('Turn The Clock'), Prophets Of Da City ('Da Struggle Continues'), KB ('Marabenta'), Bongo Maffin ('Azania') and more. 'God Is African' works as both a worthy soundtrack and a thrilling introduction to the diversity of innovative music pouring out of SA these days. Watch out for the movie as well. Idols' finalist Melanie Lowe has released her debut solo single 'Every Single Thing'. The song was penned by Guy Roche, whose CV includes working with Celine Dion, 'N'Sync and Christina Aguilera. "Everybody knows I'm not a fan of pop music but I absolutely love the song," said 27-year-old Mel. "The lyrics have a great depth and the first time I sang them, I actually got goosebumps. At the time they meant quite a bit to me personally - I was engaged to be married, 'though that is no longer going to happen. But my life seemed to be coming together and it is really a song about love and positive things." The single was produced - like Heinz Winckler's 'Once In A Lifetime' and the Idols Album - by Brian O'Shea, who is also currently hard at work on producing Heinz' debut solo album. 'Every Single Thing' is released commercially as a single on October 28th and fans of this spiky-haired singer (currently gracing the cover of the latest edition of PC Format) are in for a surprise with one of the other two tracks included on the release! Meanwhile more Idols news is that most of the Top 11 are hard at work, preparing for a slew of live events over the next few months. Mel and Heinz are obviously eager to showcase their debut singles (and indeed have already being doing that over the past few months), while the others are set to entertain fans throughout the country during the up-coming festive season. ------------------------ GODESSA RELEASE 'SOCIAL ILLS' SINGLE Godessa is Shameema Williams, EJ von Lyrik, and Burni. The all female trio was formed in February 2000, aiming to be as lyrically tight as their male counterparts and looking to utilize hip hop to make effective contributions and change in the communities, not just to rhyme, perform and record. Shameema Williams is a longstanding activist in the hip hop community in Cape Town, EJ von Lyrik has worked with SA 4 times DMC Champ, Ready D and performed with Prophets Of The City in Norway, and Burni is a notorious spoken word poet. Godessa is also the first female hip hop crew in the country to sign a recording deal with the independent label African Dope Records. The group has just released the 'Social Ills' single and the debut album will be released in November 2002 under the African Dope Records label. 'Social Ills' also appears on the new 'Cape Of Good Dope' compilation from African Dope, which will be launched on Friday 25 October. Read a live review of their 'Social Ills' launch in the 'Concerts' section below. ------------------- SWAMP FUNK QUARTET - 'GO FUNK YOURSELF' The Swamp Funk Quartet is an occasional gathering of four Cape Town musicians with a common interest in funky guitar-based music. SFQ is Ted Baumann (ex-Woodshed) on guitar and vocals, Tom Fox (Bright Blue, ex-The Usual) on guitar, Paul Tizzard on drums and Yoyo Buys on bass (Both ex-The Usual; Vanessa Nolan). The quartet recorded nine tracks at Paris Studios in Fish Hoek (Cape Town) in late 2001, which are now available as a limited edition CD entitled 'Go Funk Yourself'. Unexpectedly, one of these, 'I’m a Man', a cover of Muddy Waters’ classic paean to himself, made it to No. 1 on the SAMP3.COM charts in early September 2002. The idea behind SFQ was to have some musical fun by combining the highly-syncopated, drum n’ bass-influenced style that Fox, Tizzard, and Buys developed in their time in The Usual with the varied blues-rock material favoured by Baumann. The result is similar to the "jungle beat" style popularised by Bo Diddley and later by George Thorogood, overlaid with '461 Ocean Boulevard'-era Eric Clapton and even elements of trance. Buys has since emigrated to the UK, but is in South Africa regularly enough for the group to perform about twice a year. SFQ is planning performances over the summer season at suitable Cape Town venues, if any are left... In 1965 the group Les Fleur De Lys moved from Southampton to London to become a part of the rising rainbow revolution. The original R&B quartet comprised Alex Chamberlain (keyboards), Gary Churchill (bass), Keith Guster (drums), and Frank Smith (guitar & vocals). Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham signed them and released two singles on his Immediate label. After a rendition of Buddy Holly's 'Moondreams' failed to make any headway, Chamberlain and Churchill dropped out, while Frank Smith returned to Southampton to assemble a new Fleur De Lys. Keith Guster remained, recruiting guitarist Bryn Haworth, bassist Gordon Haskell (ex-Ravens), keyboardist Pete Sears, drummer Keith Guster and ex-Shotgun Express guitarist Phil Sawyer. Enthused over SA rock, I went to an eclectic store in Austin, Texas, naively thinking to find some SA CDs not by Miriam Makeba. I found an Austrian bootleg of 'Galactic Vibes' by Freedom's Children, an amazing discovery that still astounds me. Back then, my SA music collection consisted of Four Jacks and a Jill, Manfred Mann, and 'Galactic Vibes'. Later, I bought a German release of the album that included most of 'Hymn of the Broken-Hearted Horde' (with reduced bass). I learned that that CD, too, was not authorized by the band. Now I have the official, band-sanctioned, and finely remastered release from Retro Fresh. A nice sonic blast it is, too, full of cool songs and sounds, sharp guitar and wild electronics, a throbbing, swinging bass, and a drummer slash percussionist during whose solos I would have stayed to listen, not gone to get a refill. This real rock album has a powerful open with 'Sea Horse', followed by a live version of 'The Homecoming' from the Freedom's 'Astra' album. Then there's 'That Did It', and.... And I might as well list all the tracks because each one has something rock-worthy or special about it. There's even an unreleased extended version of '1999' as a bonus track. Owen Coetzer's liner notes include insightful commentary from Julian Laxton, Brian Davidson, Colin Pratley, and Clive Calder. Missing are reminiscences from Barry Irwin in California and Ramsay MacKay in Scotland. Unlike many bands of one or two driving forces, Freedom's Children had a full line-up of talent. I've mentioned the weird feeling listening to 'Galactic Vibes' gives me, that I'm in an alternate universe where this group made it through the political fertilizer in London, wowed audiences everywhere, and that this album, this group, is now part of the world's rock music consciousness as are Pink Floyd and Deep Purple. At least I can glimpse that other world with this CD, one I bought twice before finally getting it right with Retro Fresh. GIG REPORT 'OLD SCHOOL VS. NEW SCHOOL' Sat 5 Oct, Purple Turtle, CT This was already one of the most anticipated punk shows so far this year, but what made it even more interesting was the fact that the show had been double booked with another gig. So, two more bands had to be accommodated, meaning that there were now seven bands playing, the biggest bill ever at the Turtle! Fans started packing the Turtle at about 7pm and Seizure (Old School) opened the show full of energy, insane drumming, and bass riffs. They rocked the Turtle with some really fast punk and really got the crowd going. Then came Skanking Nelson (New School) who are improving by the day. They added a couple of new songs to their set list, as well as another weird cover, this time of 'Pumpkin Patch'! Third up was War-on-Salt (one of my favourite local bands) whose fast aggressive punk, with the whole "we don't give a shit" vibe, found me joining a topless crusade in a very wild pit! Fourth on the bill were Threefifty (New School). I haven't heard them for a while, so it was a bit weird to hear that they had made a lot of their songs faster and more melodic. They rocked the Turtle and everyone was going off, especially when this guy called Glen did a huge stage dive while at the same time pulling vocalist Brett's mike stand with him. Up next was Sedwick the Salesman (New School), whom I expected to be fresh and amped from the 'NewSong' festival. But Greig, the band's lead singer, had flu and the vibe had quietened down so they were disappointing, but Peter handled the guest guitar for 'Poor You' very well. Then it was Fail to Lose (Old School), who have a very "Rancid-y" sound to them. Their bassist is insanely good and quick, their guitarist has that metal edge to him and their drummer is in your face fast. Fail To Lose were brilliant and the few people who stuck around definitely got their money's worth! Last up was One More Riot, but unfortunately it was already 1am and my lift was leaving. But those who stuck it out, said they were great! All in all there were around 350 people who all had a good time and just enjoyed a really good night of punk. I am told 'OldSchool vs NewSchool Two' is sometime in December. So keep your eyes peeled! It was quite weird looking around and seeing people who were mainly, shall we say, not in their twenties anymore, and then to realise ditto for oneself! Anyway, exactly four minutes past the advertised time a voice said: "Without keeping you any longer, Ladies and Gentleman, Mr Shawn Phillips". A simple entrance, picking up his first guitar, he started with the beautiful 'Moonshine'. Vintage Phillips! Wild applause erupted after this song and Shawn greeted the crowd warmly, claiming surprise at playing to more than four people. Yeah right! An absolute brilliant, almost spiritual, evening followed (thanks also to the brilliant Mauritz Lotz who joined Phillips on stage). This is the real way to enjoy the genius of this man, not in a big hall like the first time he came to SA in 1994. Something was lost then, but in the smaller venue ... love flowed. That's it! That was the magic ingredient! Mostly the songs played were off Phillips' new CD 'No Category', but the old favourites like 'The Ballad Of Casey Deiss' and 'She was waiting for her mother at the station at Torino...' also made their very eagerly awaited appearances. After some 90 minutes, Phillips played out with the 'Peace Song'. His parting words - "I wish you love, peace and clarity!" - still ring in my ears. With more people like Shawn, his credo might just possibly become reality. Love and peace and clarity for all! Now wouldn't that be something? Charl Cornelissen ---------------- GODESSA 'Social Ills' Single Launch By Nadia Neophytou After a sneak preview at the Move Mental gig last week, Godessa's much-hyped launch of their single, 'Social Ills', finally took place on Friday 11 October. As the trio of female MCs said in an interview on UCT Radio, the launch was for a single and not an album, because the group, feeling as yet not ready for a full album, still wanted to give their fans something to go on. A reasonable entry fee of R30 with an even more reasonable offer to buy the single for R30 more - which contains remixes and a video of the song - made for a well-worth-it gig. Amongst DJs Dubmasta China, real Rozzano and Nastie Ed (UCT Radio) supporting Godessa was Lions of Zion, a group that fills the void left by the antics of Firing Squad since their last performance some time ago. Feisty and zest-filled music combined with socially conscious lyrics, Lions of Zion gave a tight performance. Good news for the audience is that they will be performing at the upcoming 'Cape of Good Dope' album launch. But the night belonged to Godessa who performed a 45-minute set to a cheering crowd. A crowd who joined the group in raising their fists for the Babylon song and chanting "Godessa's hard to the core". These women are serious about what they do and mix together the fun and enjoyment of good backing beats with lyrics that speak to the heart of life in post-apartheid South Africa, particularly as experienced by the youth. Expect exciting things from Godessa as they head off to the States to take part in an international hip-hop conference. ---------------- UPCOMING GIGS ---------------- BARLEYCORN MUSIC CLUB upstairs at the River Club, Observatory, Cape Town Matt Allison-Guitar/vocals (all his own songs-currently working on his 2nd CD) Pete Van Heerden/Graham Paddock/Becky Smith-guitars/vocals/accordion. Art has been living in Los Angeles since January 2002 where he has been writing and pre-producing material for Just Jinger's up and coming album due for release in early 2003 and it is there that he met Alec, who resides in Laguna, California. A strong musical relationship was quickly formed based on a unique understanding for each others styles and in particular Art's songs. This collaboration has subsequently led to Alec also being included in the Just Jinger line up. Art and Alec have a great mutual admiration for each others abilities and together they create a groovy, soulful and melodically driven sound that focuses on Art's voice yet has a definite free creative edge that makes each show a truly unique experience.
