The singer, who gained fame as a member of the SA female vocal group Joy, had been suffering from AIDS after being raped at a party two years ago. Anneline's tragic story was the subject of a 'Carte Blanche' feature on M-Net some weeks back. Speaking on television, Anneline looked gaunt and weak, but what shone through was her amazing courage, and her concern for her four children and other loved ones. Two benefit concerts were held during June at On Broadway in Green Point and attracted a host of stars who raised over R7000 for Anneline. The project was spearheaded by Patric van Blerk, the composer of 'Paradise Road' and the group's mentor, and journalist Ray Joseph, who were first alerted to Anneline's plight and whose efforts ensured that Anneline's story was correctly told and publicised. The song 'Paradise Road', which gained recent exposure after being featured heavily in the SA 'Pop Idols' elimination rounds, is set to become the anthem of the anti-AIDs campaign in South Africa. A worthy tribute to an exceptional talent and wonderful lady. Authentic Ideas, the promoters of the concert, issued a full apology on behalf of the venue, sponsors, and organisers. The concert had been specifically targeted at under-18's, and therefore all the artistes had been specifically requested to monitor their behaviour and watch their language. Many of the kids were so traumatised, and their parents so upset, that they all clean forgot to catch the late-Friday night Big Brother uncensored highlights on TV. A double bummer! Listen to an exclusive live and unplugged (but not unclothed) version of 'Colour Me In' by Sunways at http://www.samp3.com, thanks to Benjy Mudie of Fresh Music and SAFM. __________________________________________ 2.CHARTS ----------- SA ROCK DIGEST TOP 20 SOUTH AFRICAN MP3s OF THE WEEK http://www.samp3.com This week [last week] (highest position) Title - Artist (Album/Label) 1. CDs - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES -------------------------------------------- CURIOUS ABOUT CURIOUS GEORGE? If you've listened to Curious George's strange psych-rock MP3 of 'Tripping', you'll be interested to know that the band are a four-piece alternative rock outfit from the Eastern Cape, comprising Tim Kroon (vocals and guitars), Cheyne Harris (bass), Andrew Bryson (guitars), and Greg Wilde/Micheal Kroon (alternating on percussion and drums). The band has been together for the past three years and has won numerous awards and titles, including the Border region SAB sponsored 'Battle Of The Locals', and the Radio Algoa Sound Search 2001 competition. Curious George recorded their first demo album at Paris Studio's in Cape Town in July last year, and then as a result of winning the Radio Algoa competition, were sent to record again at SABC Studio One in PE with André Van Rooyen. The band recently filmed a video of the track 'Sleeper' through eTV. Download Curious George MP3s at: http://www.samp3.com ----------- RE-ISSUES ----------- SCABBY ANNIE 2002 Since their heyday in 1998, Scabby Annie have been pretty quiet. Members have left, gone overseas, returned, gone back, joined other projects, and generally not been much of a band. A short reunion in 2000 saw them play a few gigs and record a new album, but not much since them. Now in August 2002, they are heading over to the UK to make a new go of it. Singer/guitarist Jody Preshous is heading back to the UK with his wife and daughter to join original bass player, Graham Fitzsimmons, and re-start the band with a whole bunch of new songs and a whole new approach. In their time as a working, touring band, Scabby Annie released 2 albums, 'Petroleum' and 'Superhero 2000', neither of which were very well distributed (through no fault of anyone in particular) and kind of fell through the cracks. As a result, quite a few of them have remained available all this time. These recordings demonstrate just how far ahead of the pack the Scabs were. With tunes and attitude that make the punk pretenders of the now seem like boring wimps, the Scabs blasted a pathway through the gig circuit and the airwaves for the likes of Tweak, Ethel My Love, New World Inside, Fuzigish and Hog Hoggidy Hog to follow. But in true Scabs style, never stuck around long enough to reap the reward. Now, in conjunction with One World, these two albums are available online at a ludicrous price, and need to be snapped up. Grab your chunk of punk pop history before it is gone, and buy both the Scabs albums before it is too late. Also look out for an exclusive, limited edition release of their previously un-released third album, 'A Little Less Negative' in the near future. 'Snowflake' was number 3 in the SA Rock Digest Top 30 Albums of 2001. http://www.sarockdigest.com/sard_albums_2001.html The 'Letter From A Friend' EP contains the title single which was recorded at The Farm Studios at the end of 2001 and was produced by Brian O'Shea and Chris Tuck. 'Jammez', the second new track, was recorded in an 'Unplugged Live on 5FM' session last year. The EP also includes 'Step Back', an album track off 'Snowflake', the version of the band's big single 'Crazy Over You' that appeared on the 'Showcase 3 - Unearthed' compilation, and a bonus Mpeg video of 'Crazy Over You' which was directed by Tyrone Janse van Vuuren. The 'Picture Perfect' album has been selling well on the back of some consistent radio and chart success with the singles 'Wasted Out', 'Dreams and Troubles', and the title track. Perez will be launching the new album at Wave House on Thursday 22 August. This official launch will also kick off the band's national tour. We got to hear and see Roger Waters performing Pink Floyd classics for the first time ever in SA when the 'In The Flesh 2002' world tour kicked off in Cape Town. Bowie's 'Ziggy Stardust' album celebrated its 30th anniversary with a 2CD re-issue and at the same time David Bowie released his stunning new album 'Heathen'. Rodriguez's cult classic 'Cold Fact' was repaired and re-issued 32 years after it was first released. Jethro Tull have released a live CD and DVD, 'Living With The Past' which includes a track recorded live in 2002 by the original line-up. Deep Purple have just released an incredible retrospective box set full of classic tracks as well as rare and unreleased songs from the BBC sessions and various live shows. The 'Listen Learn Read On' box set consists of 6CDs and still only manages to cover up to 1976! Talking of box sets, Yes have released a 5CD collection titled 'In A Word' which covers their full history from 1969 right up to date and includes their biggest hit, the US chart-topping 'Owner Of A Lonely Heart', penned by SA-born Trevor Rabin. At the Queen's Golden Jubilee Party at the Palace recently, we were treated to wonderful performances by the likes of Queen, Ozzy Osborne (with old Sabbs sideman Tony Iommi), Paul McCartney & Eric Clapton, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Ray Davies, Brian Wilson & Joe Cocker, all ably supported by a superb rhythm section including Ray Cooper and Phil Collins (hands up all those who remember when Phil was just the drummer for Genesis). Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band have released their first studio album in years and its definitely one of Bruce's best (if not THE best) ever. On the South African scene we have that Chris Venter-compiled and TV-advertised 'The Ultimate Rock Collection' 2CD set which gets 5 out 5 from me. We were treated to a new Brian Finch solo album (after 27 years!), the awesome 'Hero For Heroes'. And RetroFresh have been steadily re-issuing old-but-not-forgotten-classics like 'Galactic Vibes' by Freedoms Children (reviewed below), Peach's punky new wave 'On Loan For Evolution', Falling Mirror's psychotic 'Zen Boulders' (coupled with 'Storming Of The Loft' as a "2 albums on 1 CD" release) and the brilliant 'Rocking Against The System' compilation, with not a dud track in sight. And now we hear rumours of a RetroFresh tour! Unconfirmed reports talk of a series of concerts around South Africa in September or October featuring Clout, Circus, Bright Blue, éVoid, Ella Mental, Cinema/ Face to Face, Ballyhoo, The Helicopters, Marc Alex, PJ Powers, The Working Girls, Stirling and Tellinger and maybe even Sweatband. Like I said; its a great year to be an old rock fan! He later became the A&R man for WEA records, signing such luminaries as Lesley Rae Dowling, Baxtop and Falling Mirror. He has ventured briefly into the realm of songwriting, getting co-writing credit for Little Sister's song 'You Got My Heart', but it is mainly for his running of record labels, notably Tusk and more recently Fresh and Retro Fresh that he is honoured here. With these labels he has tirelessly dedicated himself to putting South African music out there, showing an unshaking belief in the quality of SA music. More at: http://www.sarockdigest.com/halloffame ---------------- SHILOH'S CORNER SNOWY WHITE (BIRD OF PARADISE) Part 2 of 3 It was around this time that Kate Bush's manager had tipped off Snowy that Pink Floyd wanted to strengthen their line-up. At that stage Floyd were completing their 1977 'Animals' release and asked Snowy to session on 'Pigs On The Wing'. Although Snowy's guitar solos were eventually edited out, it did result in keyboardist Rick Wright inviting him to play on his first solo effort 'Wet Dream'. The 'Wet Dream' line-up included Reg Isadore on drums, and ex-Herd bassist Larry Steele. During the 'Animals' tour, Snowy was recruited more as a bass guitarist with occasional lead breaks. In 1979 he teamed up with Peter Green and released the epic 'In The Skies'. Green played rhythm guitar, firstly due to the fact that it was Snowy's album, and secondly because Mr Green was not in good shape. The album remains the watershed event that helped to bring Peter out of the dark shadows in which he had found himself. The essence of this apocalyptic release had everything to do with Peter's recent return from Israel. Songs like 'In The Skies', 'Seven Stars', and the instrumental 'Apostle', were definitive examples of a human finding his "Shalom". Snowy's guitar work is phenomenal, poignant and decisive on this axe-flavoured landmark. Believe it or not, the gospel-bound Cliff Richard introduced Snowy to Thin Lizzy after a Greenbelt festival appearance. Snowy was delivering the guitar riffs for 'We Don't Talk Anymore', Cliff's first #1 hit after eleven years. Snowy joined Thin Lizzy for a short, unpleasant period, pretentiously cloning his Lizzy predecessors, Brian Robertson and Gary Moore. The "White" ability was utilised on two of their albums, 'Renegade', and 1980's 'China Town'. White was eventually replaced by future Whitesnake guitarist John Sykes. Then came the translucent hit single, 'Bird of Paradise'. This magnificent guitar ballad reached #6 on the British charts in 1984. The extended version was also released on Snowy's first solo album, 'White Flames'. Snowy feels his greatest exposure was at 'The Wall' concert in Berlin in 1990. This strong association with Roger Waters led to him becoming part of the Waters stage act that revived itself in the new millennium. http://rock.co.za/rogerwaters/270202.html {The version of 'Pigs On The Wing' featuring Snowy's first take guitar solo was released on the 8-track (remember those?) version of 'Animals' only. More at: http://www.rock.co.za/files/pink_floyd_animals_8track.html - ed} Shiloh Noone, Cape Town mailto:shiloh@sarockdigest.com Blues and Variation Fine Music Radio 101.3 FM Wednesdays 10 pm -------------- USA FOR AFRICA Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music ROCKING AGAINST THE SYSTEM (RETRO FRESH, freshcd 119) http://rock.co.za/legends/2000plus/rocking.html In the evolution of the family tree of compilations, the three 'Sharp Cuts' pop and rock CDs can be seen as ancestors of 'Rocking Against the System', minus the recessive pop gene. Here are three reasons why I think people should buy this CD: 1. Eighteen great rock tunes, not a dog in the bunch ('Waiting for a Miracle' is by Dog Detachment, though). 2. This is a representative CD of a special time in SA rock. 3. Support for a re-release program that is Of Some Importance. Here are not only songs by groups that have already been Retro Freshed (given the Retro Fresh treatment of reissuing, remastering, extensive liner notes and photos), but songs by upcoming Retro Fresh re-releases: Ellamental, Celtic Rumours, No Friends of Harry, The Helicopters, and others. My nostalgia for South African pop and rock goes back only about four years (not counting the LP 'Master Jack' in 1968). For those remembering these songs from the days alluded to in the title, the memories must be powerful. My powerful enjoyment comes from enjoyment of the consistent musical quality, with some budding nostalgia. And I grew up in Cazenovia, New York, not Springfontein, Free State Province. This comp provides a taste of other musical branches of the rock tree. The Asylum Kids lead to Tribe After Tribe and Three Fish. The Helicopters take one to Bernard Binns and 'The Physiognomy of Soul'. Other songs lead to Retro Fresh CDs by Falling Mirror, Dog Detachment, éVoid, Via Afrika, The Dynamics, Peach, and others. If you only buy one Retro Fresh CD, this is the one for you. Buy 'Rocking Against The System': http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&ID=freshcd119 Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com ------------------ LONDON LEKKER London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music FREEDOM'S CHILDREN - 'GALACTIC VIBES' (RetroFresh, freshcd 126) The year is 1971 but the song is '1999'. The group is Freedom's and the vibes are galactic. And now just over 30 years later we can look back at 1971 and '1999'. This time we can do it without having to get up to turn the record over as the Freedom's Children classic album 'Galactic Vibes' has been given a new lease on life by RetroFresh. This is a many layered album, almost to the point of being cluttered, but this is what makes it interesting. Each time you listen you can hear something new, be it a tone in Brian Davidson's wailing vocals, a riff from Julian Laxton's screaming guitar, a sequence of notes from Barry Irwin's booming bass, the change from sticks to hands on Colin Pratley's awesome drumming, or merely putting your ear right up against the speaker to feel the presence of Ramsay MacKay on the live version of 'The Homecoming'. The centrepiece of 'Galactic Vibes' does not come at the centre of the album, but is the second track. Clocking in at over 16 minutes (that's a third of the CD's playing time) is 'The Homecoming'. The shorter version appeared on 'Astra', but this live version has to be one of South Africa's epic tracks. Recorded live at the Out of Town Club (which according to a copy of their flyer in the sleeve notes, advertised a Steak Parlour), the track features a quite stunning, and by all accounts, legendary drum solo that lasts for the best part of 8 minutes before those dramatic guitar chords herald the return of the rest of the band. Aside from this monstrous drumfest, the album features some blistering fuzzy edged guitars on the thundering 'That Did It' as well as the quieter and beautiful 'Fields and Me'. There is also the experimental keyboard piece 'The Crazy World of Pod: Electronic Concerto' which is just short enough not to become irritating. '1999', the single, is less busy than most of the other tracks, and is probably the most radio friendly of the lot, although the orchestration on 'About the Dove and his Ring' adds a beauty and quality sheen to what is quite a rough rock sound. The roughness of the album is due mainly to the inventive recording methods used. With layers of overdubs and no noise reduction, this method created what the sleeve notes describe as a 'musical mystical mist of sound'. This is a wonderful way to describe the slightly distorting guitars and vague hissing sounds. These are well preserved on the re-mastered CD as they are as essential to the album as the music. The label progressive rock is usually given to this kind of music, but here you can hear why the music is called thus. These guys were breaking barriers not only in South Africa's rather narrow 1970's rock world but would have broken through numerous perceived limitations on the world stage, had the world bothered to listen. 'Galactic Vibes' is an album that South Africans can be proud of, even now 30 years on. It is a great musical achievement that can be hauled out again and again and simply marvelled at. As for me, I'm off to find out what the hell a steak parlour is. Ten years later, Dr Hook lost their grip on the top after a run of 7 weeks at number 1. They were ousted by the highly popular 'Eye of the Tiger' which was one of the biggest world-wide hits of that year. Survivor spent 6 weeks at the top in the US and 4 topping the UK charts. Those familiar with Rodriguez would be interested to know that Gallery who entered the top 5 this week in 1972 with 'Nice to be With You', were signed to the Sussex label (the label 'Cold Fact' was released on) and the song was produced by Dennis Coffey, one of the producers of Rodriguez's seminal album. 1982 saw Toto having their first SA hit since 1979's 'Hold the Line'. 'Rosanna' is reputedly about, band member Steve Lukather's then girlfriend, actress Rosanna Arquette. 'Rosanna' was followed up by the popular 'Africa' although interestingly in the UK, 'Africa' charted before 'Rosanna'. Supergroup Asia, comprising of members from Yes, Buggles, Uriah Heep and Emerson, Lake & Palmer were also riding high in 1982. It is home to an annual International Guitar Festival, and one of those on the bill this year was South African maestro, Tony Cox. The setting for the final live event of the festival was the picturesque Grange Gardens. The grass was green, the wind was rustling gently in the trees and the sun was shining in the sky. A near perfect setting for the relaxed sounds that can from the small stage. We were warmed up (or should that be mellowed down) by a Dixie Jazz band for about an hour, then Tony took to the stage. Judging from the introduction he was given by the festival organiser, he had been well liked in Lewes, both for his laid back amiable character, as well as for the undeniable mastery he has over his guitar. Clearly enjoying himself, he quickly won over the quite large crowd who had gathered on the grass to pass a restful Sunday afternoon. He prefaced each piece with a little story about the tune, and then proceeded to bring those stories vividly to life in the music. You felt you were going down the 'Anthole' with him, or sitting next to the tree full of chattering Indian Mynah's in 'Major Mynah', or hopping playfully around Zimbabwe with the frog that makes the sound 'Kwe Kwe'. The crowd responded warmly with enthusiastic clapping after each song, and respectful silence during each piece. The set ended with the awesome 'You Asked For It', a piece which to a non-guitar player like me, goes beyond belief as it sounds like there are at least 2 guitars being played at once, and although I've heard this tune a few times, I was still left stunned by it's sheer beauty, and I don't think I was the only one. It was a wonderful setting for a wonderful afternoon's entertainment. The tranquillity of the garden matched in all respects by the refined and quite frankly exquisite guitar playing of Tony Cox who demonstrated today that he is a world class talent. Written and performed by Philip Swiegers. Directed by Gaye Barbour Frustrated Phil sings RUGBY SONGS FOR THE DIFFIDENT A "fresh" look at the life and culture of South Africans, with original songs, common calumny, and hysterical political overtones. LIVE at the OLYMPIA BAKERY, KALK BAY, AUGUST 20 - 24 INCLUDING VENISON DINNER - "PUT THE MEAT BACK INTO 'SPRINGBOK'!" The protection of majority rights under the constitution claims supreme thematic status in this production - minorities like females and the Thompson Gazelle are also mentioned. Individual, original compositions deal in honest sympathy with such as millionaires, gays, farm labourers, the deceased, and those who play the game. The show had its premiere during the Hermanus Whale Festival of 2001, and is currently on tour. Everything. When the music is an amazing "recycling" of some of South Africa's best-loved classics, and the fashion is made from all recycled materials, this is not your average fashion and music event. Total World Africhill is a celebration of the sustainability, creativity, and versatility of South African artists, designers, and musicians. Born out of partnership between Gallo Music and Compact Disc Wherehouse, the series of Total World Fashion shows are the brainchild of a host of Cape Town event producers, artists and designers. The soundtrack is live. Nicky Blumenfeld, the creator of Gallo's Total World series will create live re-mixes of South African music, accompanied by percussionists and dancers, the live soundtrack to the fashion show will constantly evolve. Live music performances will also follow each fashion event. The clothes are creations. All the clothes presented will be created by artists from throughout the Cape, as part of the Frank Joubert Art collective. Art students from all over the Cape Province are busy making clothes from cans, bags, CD cases, and other found materials. Each piece of "Clothing" is actually a recycled work of art. There is no backstage. Deconstruct, reconstruct. Our models will be dressed, styled and groomed on-stage as they become part of the show in a whole new way. The models aren't models. Not really anyway. What is sustainable about a waif-like supermodel? Not here in Africa. These models are top national celebrities, musicians, artists, actors, comediennes, and other creative people. Check out your favourite Metro FM DJ, along with a host of other celebrity guests as they strut their stuff like you've never seen before. (Weekly Audio Visual Experiment) Tuesday 20 Aug The Most Amazing Show: The hilarious result of a collaboration between actors Rob Van Vuuren and Louw Venter, who are the hosts of the magazine TV-like comedy theatre experience. Venter is Corné, also known as the Love Captain, reaper of hearts, sower of wisdom, with a penchant for '70's disco chic(ks). Van Vuuren is Twakkie, who is famous for the bar that he built in his home with his bare hands, and for being Evil Knievel's celebrated body double from the 1980's. The Most Amazing Show tries to explore as many areas at one time as possible: In a single performance the sleazy 70's kung fu series Miami Dragon, for instance, may be followed by an esoteric massage segment, which might precede the Gospel Home Improvement show. And while Corné dishes out emotional advice and impromptu psychoanalysis to participating members of the audience, Twakkie fries up a delicious Vegetable Surprise in the Nu Laid Human Rights Chicken Farms Cooking Show. The beauty is that the show is never repeated. In keeping with current affairs and the ever-changing needs of audiences The Most Amazing Show is reinvented all the time much like a television show. The*Most*Amazing*Show will be presenting "Miami Knights" (a trilogy in three parts) on three consecutive Tuesdays at The Independent Armchair Theatre, which started on Tuesday the 13th of August.
