SA ROCK DIGEST ISSUE #163 http://www.sarockdigest.com http://rock.co.za 22nd July 2002 Established 27th January 1999 ----------*********----------- 2 FREE & EXCLUSIVE MP3s WITH THIS ISSUE! http://www.sarockdigest.com/mp3 New and exclusive MP3s added every week. BOK EN SPRING (demo) - PIET BOTHA 10 issues ago we launched this weekly free MP3 section with an exclusive demo song from Piet Botha. 'Die Son Kom Weer' has continued to be a popular MP3 over the last 2 months, despite fierce competition and was the 3rd most downloaded song for the month of June. This week, to celebrate Piet's birthday on the 18th, we have another previously unheard demo song entitled 'Bok en Spring'. You might know it better as 'Slagtersnek' as this is the name that it was given when released on the 'Die Hits' CD last year (read a review under the 'London Lekker' section below). 'Bok en Spring' has some different lyrics to 'Slagtersnek' and can be downloaded at http://www.sarockdigest.com/mp3, by kind permission of www.PietBotha.com. 'Slagtersnek' can be downloaded at http://www.pietbotha.com if you would like to compare. HERE BE DRAGONS - TUESDAY'S CHILD This is the brand new demo track from Cape Town's Tuesday's Child. Download it at http://www.sarockdigest.com/mp3, by kind permission of Craig Strachan and Tuesday's Child. http://rock.co.za/legends/2000plus/tuesdayschild.html The hosting of MP3s on the SARockDigest.com and SugarMan.org websites are thanks to the Future Perfect Corporation http://www.futureperfectcorporation.com Building online communities to make the future perfect. -------------- IN THIS ISSUE -------------- Free exclusive demo MP3 from Piet Botha to celebrate his birthday... A brief hiatus followed, with the band taking a short break before beginning the recording of their second album. Tikara, Sascha, Chris and Nick are currently playing a few warm-up gigs around Cape Town, and have begun working on their upcoming second album in Cape Town with Brian O'Shea (who produced 'A Life Less Strange') and Charlie Hamilton (who previously teamed up with O'Shea to produce the 'Life' single). Sascha Muller, the band's drummer, said that the band had around 16 potential album tracks from which the final tracklisting would emerge. There is no other news yet on the new album's title, track listing or release date (definitely before the end of 2002, Sascha assured us), but the band and BMG SA, their record company, must be very chuffed that the kids of South Africa nominated Semisane as finalists in the 'Favourite Pop Star and Group' category in the first ever 'Star In You' Kids Choice Awards, which will be presented during a gala ceremony in Johannesburg on 30th November 2002 at the Sandton Convention Centre. The first ever 'Star In You' Kids Choice Awards is the result of a seven month long campaign, during which our country's kids were given the opportunity to call in and vote for their favourite books, magazines, movies, pop groups, and sports stars. Semisane http://www.semisane.com -------------------- KREKVARS ARTS FESTIVAL (29 July-3 August) The Krekvars Arts Festival is a younger, cuter, less experienced but infinitely friendlier cousin of the Grahamstown National Arts Festival, and like all such cousins, what she lacks in superficial sophistication and experience; she makes up for in enthusiasm, accessibility and raw sex appeal. 'Krekvars' is a festival of Art, Drama, Music, and Dance, centreing on the drama department of the University of Pretoria from 29 July until 3 August in Pretoria. Monologues, cabarets, fine-art exhibitions, plays, and other musical items will be presented all day at approximately four venues on campus for the duration of the festival, the cost of entry being R5 per show. Two of South Africa's finest acts, Ashton Nyte and Silex, will be performing unplugged at the festival. It's a great opportunity to get some culture, catch some sussed, super-cool bohemian art and drama and continue the work of the New Renaissance. Get a program from the varsity. Get your ass over there. Take someone young and cute. For details of the Ashton Nyte and Silex performances, see 'Rock On' section below. -------------------- STRONG SA ROCK LINE-UP FOR WOODSTOCK 4 Woodstock 4, which takes place at the Aventura Resort in Heidelberg, Gauteng over the weekend of 26, 27, 28, and 29 September 2002, has established itself as the premier youth music and lifestyle event on the SA music calendar and has grown from 5,000 patrons to over 17,000 at the 2001 event. The festival has three major focuses - live music, dance music and lifestyle. The lifestyle events include motor-cross, downhill BMX-ing, skateboarding, inline skating, as well as swimming, diving, and quad bikes. There are three main live music arenas: The Musica Stage, The Castle Stage and The Blunt Stage. The Musica Stage features top South African artistes. Line-ups are still to be finalised but some of the artistes expected to attend include Tweak, Wonderboom, Cutting Jade, Sunways, Zen Arcade, and Siamese. The Blunt Stage has become an institution at Woodstock, showcasing the best in the emerging music fields of punk and hardcore sounds. The stage line-up is currently being finalised but some of the artistes already confirmed to perform include Pet Flyz, All This For Nothing, The Phoebes, The Finkelsteins and Rim 3. The Castle Stage is a new edition to the Woodstock line-up. This new stage will showcase more contemporary sounds and is situated in the caravan park alongside the lake. The arena is surrounded by trees and rocks and is nestled in against the side of a hill. Some of the artistes expected to perform on this stage include Nianell, Ian Henderson and Frosted Orange. The Dance Valley offers the best in electronic music. NB The Rock Concert 2 - A Woman's Day Celebration (and Woodstock 4 warm-up event) will be held at Carnival City Entertainment World and Casino on Friday 9 August. See 'Rock On' section below. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES --------------------------------------------------- -------------- NEW RELEASES -------------- VALIANT SWART - 'MAANHARE' (Rhythm Records, SWART006) A brand new CD from Valiant Swart has been released by Rhythm Records. After the raucous blues rock sounds of last year's Boland Punk retrospective, Valiant gets lightly more laid-back. 'Maanhare' also includes a re-recording of the song 'Sonvanger' originally released on the 1999 various artists compilation of the same title. John Samson saw Valiant at Ukkasie in London this weekend, so next week we are able to bring you reviews of both the new CD and the concert. Meanwhile take a listen to 'Diep In The Bos' at http://www.sarockdigest.com/mp3 More info at: http://rock.co.za/legends/90s/valiant_swart_index.html --------------- TOXIC SHAME - 'TENDER LOVING ABUSE' After some fingers were pointed at their last album for being a little too retro {and what's wrong with that? - ed}, Toxic Shame have responded by creating a new sonic monster called 'Tender Loving Abuse'. This new album fuses generous helpings of melodic rock with a new rock edge with production courtesy of Jon Buckley, who is regarded as one of SA's premier rock producers, and who is also the band's lead guitarist. The first single, 'Silent Movie', is receiving frequent daytime airplay on 5FM and entered both the 'High 5 at 5' and the Top 40 on 5FM this week, making it their most successful single to date. Further chart contenders could come from 'Still Small Voice', 'Circles', and the title track. 'Tender Loving Abuse' is available country-wide at Musica, Look & Listen, CD Wherehouse and Phase 2 stores and others. For further information, contact Legend Music on 011 794 9812, or on mailto:legend@commapp.co.za. --------------- TASSENBERG ALL*STARS 3 (Trippy Grape, TRIP 016) The 3rd CD in this very successful series of albums recorded at the Tassenberg Stalteater each year at KKNK in Oudtshoorn was launched at the High Street Theatre in Durbanville on Friday night. The 17 tracks on this CD are a great way to remember the gigs if you were there (I know I was!). And if you weren't then this CD is a superb example of what is currently happening in the South African Rock, Folk and Blues scene, both in English and Afrikaans. Tracks: Extra Larry - Sons Of Trout, Betta - Beeskraal, Vier Seisoene Kind - Spinnekop, Kalbassies - Anton Goosen, Bolshie Woman - Scicoustic, Untitled Crap - Anika, Suit - 12Hertz, Across The River - Blues Broers, Forget About You - Boulevard Blues Band, Torn Down - Delta Blue, Greater Than Her Parts - Frosted Orange, Lekkerbydiesee - Diff-Olie Myne Vanaand - Wouter van de Venter, Fifteen - Scicoustic, Gee Raat! - Kobus!, Riempies/Bamboesbos - Sons Of Trout, Cut It Off - Not My Dog More info at: http://rock.co.za/legends/2000plus/tassies3.html Details of the Tassenberg Volspoed Osbloed Toer are under the 'Rock On' section below. --------------- NEW AND RECENT TITLES AT ONEWORLD.CO.ZA DVD Various - 'Madiba Jazz' The first SA Jazz compilation on DVD includes big names like Hugh Masekela, Sipho Gumede, SA diva Sibongile Khumalo, and the acid jazz sounds of Moodphase5ive. Kalimba - 'Laid Back Sunday' Produced by and featuring Dr Victor (lead & acoustic guitars), a cool album with fat basslines and funky rhythms perfect for any day of the week, as far as we are concerned. Various Artists - 'Rhythm Africa' Another fine Jazz compilation that features greats, and more greats (some old, some new) - African Jazz Pioneers, Mankunku, Joe Nina, Mike Makhalamele and the swinging Elite Swingsters to name a few. Pop & Rock: Off The Edge - 'Unfinished Business' Off The Edge is Peter Hanmer's pet project and, after a year in the making, they have finally released 'Unfinished Business' independently. Features the hit 'Cry For Help'. http://www/rock.co.za/offtheedge Perez - 'Picture Perfect' Now available online, new SA rock stars Perez have arrived and made their mark on the SA rock scene with their debut album. Believe the hype 'cause it's all true and this is a rock album that should not be missed. http://rock.co.za/legends/2000plus/perez.html Starkravingsane - 'the unknown' Cape Town trio Starkravingsane has released a great album full of interesting laid back tracks that reward the listener with some clever and unconventional musical arrangements. Their small local following is sure to grow substantially with this release. Township Pop: Babsy Mlangeni - 'Babsy 2001' With three decades of experience in the business, and an unrivalled reputation in the Township Pop genre, Babsy is back. The album features Hugh Masekela, Louis Mhlanga and Concorde Nkabinde and a host of other SA artists. Tracks getting all the radio airplay are 'Nobuhle' and 'Imnandi Le Ngoma', which are fast becoming anthems. Kwela Tebza - 'The Journey' An essential pennywhistle album that chronicles the genre through the '50's and '60's Sophiatown days, as well as a taste of what's to come. It seems the journey is not over yet! Rex Rabanye - 'Best Of' A man who many believe revolutionised township music, and the way people listened to it. Rex started off as a keyboard player at weddings and functions, and soon became an item with revellers in the townships. His latest offering still has the '80's feel but some tracks have adopted the kwaito sound. Kwaito: Tokollo aka Magesh - 'All In One' The Tkzee man's second album is, according to him, influenced by the Pantsula sub-culture (a way of dressing in the township.) Includes a big track together with Mandoza which is sure to have dancefloors rocking! Ishmael - 'Akin Mathata' Produced by the big man himself, Arthur, this album continues where 'Roba Letheka' left off. Top drawer kwaito music. Afrikaans: Elzabe Zietsman - 'In My Bloed' Elzabe does her own thing with tracks by David Kramer and Taliep Peterson, Macy Gray, Mynie Grove and Amanda Strydom and Rocco de Villiers, amongst others. Various Artists - 'Liriekeraai' The much-loved TV show has now released a CD featuring the talents of Mathys Roets, Sonja Herholdt, PJ Powers and Amanda Strydom (the list goes on and on) all doing famous cover versions with the exception of Karla Du Plessis with her own track 'Rank'. ---------- ONE WORLD ---------- Buy South African CDs at One World http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 ------------- MORE REVIEWS ------------- More reviews can be found at: Open Record http://www.openrecord.co.za Amuzine http://rock.co.za/reviews.htm ______________________________________________ 4. CLASSIC ROCK ---------------- SHILOH'S CORNER BUDDY MILES (Locomotive Power) Part 1 of 3 Miles of trials would follow one of America's most bombastic and impressionable body drummers, Buddy Miles. Buddy junior started playing drums at the age of nine and by the time he reached twelve, he featured as a member of his father's jazz combo, the Bebops. During his high school years he decided to opt for music and left Nebraska to session with various touring editions such as the Delphonics and the Ink Spots. Over and above his unique style of drumming, he could also play guitar left-handed and upside-down like Hendrix. Buddy's first momentous session was with a group called the Jaynetts and their 1963 hit 'Sally Go Round The Roses'. Fortune smiled down during an Easter rock special at the RKO theatre in Brooklyn, when a young talented Mike Bloomfield was blown away by Buddy's thunderous, fatback drumming on 'In The Midnight Hour'. Buddy had secured a prestigious drumming slot with the great Wilson Pickett, and, at that stage, Mike Bloomfield was featuring with keyboardist Barry Goldberg as one part of a soul line-up that included Smokey Robinson, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels and Curtis Mayfield. To put it bluntly, Miles was kidnapped by Bloomfield for his new band the Electric Flag, much to the annoyance of Wilson Pickett. Electric Flag were noted to be one of the first super groups from San Francisco. Shiloh Noone, Cape Town mailto:shiloh@sarockdigest.com Blues and Variation Fine Music Radio 101.3 FM Wednesdays 10 pm -------------- USA FOR AFRICA Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music SPOTLIGHT ON PIET "HAMMER" BOTHA THE MAN AND HIS BANDS Piet Botha has been playing music since the 70s and has been in bands like Raven, Wildebeest and Jack Hammer. In the late 90s he established himself as an Afrikaans Rock Poet as well. When he records in Afrikaans he calls himself Piet Botha, but when he records in English the band is called Jack Hammer. However, when they perform live (which is often), the band is usually called Jack Hammer (or sometimes Piet Botha, or even 'Piet and the Kid', when it's just Piet and Jonathan Martin) and then they perform songs from the whole of Piet's English and Afrikaans back-catalogue including some Wildebeest tracks and various rock classics (see a list below under the 'RockLists' section). Ok, that clears that up... THE MAN AND HIS MUSIC Happy Birthday, Piet! Piet Botha is two years younger than I am, and I'm doing pretty good, so I can reasonably expect that he and I are both good for years to come, me as part of his audience, and he the talented performer. I took his CDs on vacation with me over the Fourth of July, and came back still playing them. I've been saturated in his rock and ballads, English and Afrikaans, for weeks, and I say bring on the new CD. Piet Botha knows pure rock, and he knows pure songwriting. He rocks, as in 'Street of Love', and he writes meaningful songs, well-crafted lyrically. Examples? Listen to 'Good Friend of Mine', 'Liberty', and 'Staan Saam Burgers'. In fact, for Piet Botha and Jack Hammer I reserve a rare accolade. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Gypsy Suite on the album 'Death of a Gypsy' ('Ancient Heart', Gypsy's Lament', Sarajevo', 'Saint Adrian', and 'Death of a Gypsy') have a unity, a power of theme, the well-crafted lyrics, the right-on guitars and drums, and the strong vocals that make them rock art. But those songs on one CD are not his only powerful moments. How about 'Goeienag Generaal' from ''n Suitcase vol Winter'? How about the evocative and melancholic 'Donkermaan' from the same album? And the oft-collected on compilation and live CDs 'Blues vir Louise', originally on the CD 'Jan Skopgraf'? Wonderful music. Piet's a musical treasure, and I have it on good authority that he is a real nice guy, too. If you're not familiar with his quality body of work, pick up 'Anthology', then 'Death of a Gypsy', 'Bootleg', 'Die Hits', and the others mentioned above. You'll be both rocked and moved. Thank you, Piet, you're my favorite South African performer and your CDs are crucial to my collection. I'm thrilled to say I'm a member of your loyal audience. You've got a great band in Jonathan Martin, Tertius du Plessis, and Paul van de Waal, so y'all keep on rocking the night away, and happy birthday, Piet! Piet Botha and Jack Hammer http://www.PietBotha.com Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com ------------------ LONDON LEKKER London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music DIE HITS - PIET BOTHA Piet Botha is well known for his political connections - he shares a birthday with Nelson Mandela (18 July) and his surname is an anagram of Thabo. But not only are there these connections, but lyrically he is probably South Africa's most musical political historian. Many of his songs refer to the Boer War, but these can be read as comments on modern society. Lines like 'In die naam van haar majesteit/Is hier moord gepleeg/Moet dit nooit vergeet' from 'Slagtersnek' can be interpreted literally or applied to any oppressive regime. A number of these historio-political songs can be found on 'Die Hits', a collection of Piet's solo work. The already mentioned 'Slagtersnek', 'Van Tonder' and 'Staan Saam Burgers' (the latter not being a call for fast food unity) to name a few. But the album is not just one big history lesson set to music, there are songs about love, lost love, being on the road and all injected with a healthy dose of South African imagery. There are jakkels, mambas, pofadders and the occasional bobbejaan in this game park of sound, while 'Laat die Wiele Rol' is a lesson in geography of the Cape. While the lyrics take you on these fascinating journeys, the music gently soothes the soul. It's mostly laid back blues, with Piet's great guitar sound being supplemented by some howling harmonica and spine-chilling cello, the latter coming from Jonathan Martin. Piet also uses the Hammond organ on a few tracks to good effect, these coming courtesy of Ron 'Bones' Brettell on some tracks and Simon 'Agent' Orange on others. This album can be listened to as a somewhat melancholic blues album that can gently relax you, particularly after a bruising day at the office, or you can listen carefully to the lyrics and be moved by it's poetical beauty and acute socio-political messages. Whichever way you choose to enjoy this album, enjoy it you will. If you don't own a copy, I won't say for Piet's sake buy one, do it for your own sake. Happy Botha-day Piet. Joe Dolan meanwhile was spending his second week at the top in 1977 and Dr Hook their 4th in 1982. One of the few instrumental songs to chart in SA was 'Magic Fly' by Space. This French band was the brainchild of Didier Marouani and 'Magic Fly' was by far their most successful song. They did have limited success in 1979 with 'Save Your Love for Me' reaching number 15. In the late 80's Marouani recorded an opera for choirs and synthesizer and brought together the Harvard University Choir from the US and The Red Army Choir from the USSR to produce the album entitled 'Space Opera'. A copy of this mammoth project is rumoured to have been put into the MIR Space Station. In 1982 another chart shy form of music was making waves as Jamaica's Third World moved up to number 4 with the reggae hit 'Try Jah Love'. One of the members of Third World was the son of a Deputy Prime Minister. In 1987, Starship moved back into the top 5 after having fallen out the previous week. Piet Botha - 'n Suitcase Vol Winter (1997) I first heard 'Sien Jou Weer' on radio KFM in Cape Town and became an instant fan. I bought this album the same day. 'Suitcase' opened up a whole new genre for me: Afrikaans Rock, and I've never been the same since! I was so in awe of this album, of Piet Botha the artist, and of his songs like 'Goeienag Generaal', that I set up a small fan website for Piet and Jack Hammer (his English hard rocking alter ego). This website has since become the official Piet Botha website! http://www.pietbotha.com 2. David Bowie - The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (1972) We wore our hair like Ziggy, we bought the platform shoes, we tried to play guitar. Bowie was Ziggy and Ziggy was Bowie and he sang: "let all the children boogie"... and we did. There is a whole website dedicated to just this one album and its 2CD 30th anniversary re-issue at: http://www.5years.com See also http://www.rock.co.za/files/john.html for the full history of the Ziggy outtake 'John I'm Only Dancing'. 3. Deep Purple - Made In Japan (1973) THE classic live album from a classic rock band. "What a rip-off!", I thought to myself when I first saw this album, "a double album with only 7 tracks on it!". And then the energy in those 7 songs (the shortest being about 7 minutes) blew my mind, melted my speakers and drove my Methodist church organist father nuts. This album was my first introduction to Deep Purple and I was hooked for life. And they are still around, much to my father's surprise, and possibly their own as well. http://rock.co.za/deeppurple In September 2001 a 4CD box set was released titled 'On The Road', which chronicles Deep Purple on stage across the years and around the world from 1969-1993. Full track list and review at: http://www.rock.co.za/files/dp4cd.html 4. Genesis - Selling England By The Pound (1973) "Can you tell me where your country lies, said the Unifaun to his true love's eyes" sang the plaintive voice of Peter Gabriel to open this album. I still have no idea what he was on about (or what he was on), but this pastoral, gentle progressive rock album captured my ears and my heart and will always be a favourite. Also contains the hit single "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe"). This was back in the days when Phil Collins was just a drummer... 5. Golden Earring - Hearing Earring (1973) This album was a compilation of tracks from 2 previous European-only releases: 'Seven Tears' (1971) and 'Together' (1972). As far as I know 'Hearing Earring' has never been released on CD, but it is one of my all-time favourite rock albums, so I eventually bought the CDs of 'Seven Tears' and 'Together' just to have all these great tracks. 'Jangalene' is a classic rock song with its long acoustic intro and then thundering full-tilt climax. This album goes from light to dark, soft to loud in an instant and is very comparable to the Deep Purple or Zeppelin stuff from the same era. http://www.rock.co.za/files/hearing.html 6. Jethro Tull - Aqualung (1971) "Sitting on a park bench watching all the pretty panties run". No wonder our parents hated it. Jethro Tull at their hardest and rockest. Before the self-indulgence of 'Thick As A Brick' and 'A Passion Play', this was the spirit of early 70s rock captured on one album. And 'Locomotive Breath' is on it... worth the price of admission alone. http://rock.co.za/jethrotull 7. Pink Floyd - The Dark Side Of The Moon (1973) I remember hearing this album when it was just another new release, "the new Pink Floyd album", nothing more. Who would have guessed the impact it would have on future generations? Well my friends and I did, for one. We knew this was nothing like we had ever heard before: sound effects, spoken words, hidden messages, cool cover, a swearword (this was South Africa in 1973, remember?), songs flowing one into the other... and David Gilmour's guitar, oh that guitar sound... http://rock.co.za/pinkfloyd 8. Ramases - Space Hymns (1971) A Sheffield central heating saleman thinks he is re-incarnated as an Egyptian God. He gets his wife to sing with him, the fledging 10cc to play with him, and Roger Dean to paint the LP cover for him and produces a stunning work. From acoustic love songs with gentle flutes to sitars and rock guitars this album explores the themes of alienation, loneliness and searching with a particular "other-world" feel. Hard to find but well worth the search. http://rock.co.za/ramases 9. Rodriguez - Cold Fact (recorded in 1969, first released in South Africa in 1971) If you've heard of Rodriguez (and amazingly most of the world still hasn't), then you probably love this album like I do, so you don't need me to tell you how good it is. Visit the official Rodriguez website at http://www.sugarman.org 10. Rick Wakeman With The London Symphony Orchestra - Journey To The Centre Of The Earth (1974) Majestic sounds, choirs, synthesizers, the London Symphony Orchestra, narration of the Jules Verne classic by SA-born David Hemmings... this album was the ultimate fusion of rock and orchestra pioneered by Jon Lord (with Deep Purple) and Keith Emerson (first with The Nice and then ELP). Rick Wakeman - keyboard wizard? Oh yeah! In May 1999 Rick Wakeman recorded 'The Return To The Centre Of The Earth' with various guest artists including ex-Rabbitt and Yesman, Trevor Rabin. http://rock.co.za/legends/rabbitt The full Top 50 list can be seen at: http://www.rock.co.za/files/top50.html ----------------- SONGS COVERED IN CONCERT BY PIET BOTHA AND JACK HAMMER http://www.pietbotha.com This list is not exhaustive, but it is pretty comprehensive. A lone figure on stage with only a keyboard and guitar for props, Kerkorrel began by playing a lot of material that will feature on his soon to be released album 'Die Hart is 'n Eensame Jagter'. Prefacing each song with a short introduction about the inspiration, he sang songs about things South African. Most of these were performed to piano sounds from the keyboard. Unfortunately, due to a number of people at the back of the venue insisting on talking, the lyrics were difficult to hear, which was a pity as this is a fundamental part of Kerkorrel's appeal, and it was through no fault of his own. The songs did sound melancholic, leaving one feeling a little blue, but in a nice way. Like most established artists, it's the old stuff that the audience want to hear and with Kerkorrel this was no exception. When he had run through the new material, he took requests from the audience. Almost all the requests were for material from 'Eet Kreef', his debut album. He obliged with an updated version of 'BMW', a beautiful acoustic version of 'Hilbrow' and a piano rock version of 'Sit Dit Af'. These were more warmly received than the new songs, but that proves the old saying 'familiarity breeds content.' This gig would probably have been better in a more intimate venue as Kerkorrel did seem a bit isolated on the stage, but this did not detract too much from the show which was professionally executed and enjoyed by all. As for the something borrowed, well he did do a cover of Koos Kombuis' 'Onder in My Whiskeyglas'. John Samson mailto:john@sarockdigest.com ----------------- TROUT BLAST (FROM THE) REPUBLICA (OF SA) Sons of Trout @ The Kings Head in Fulham 13 July 2002 If you only see one gig this year, you should be ashamed of yourself. However you could be marginally forgiven if you make that gig a Sons of Trout one. The crowd that gathered at Kings Head in Fulham where treated to one of the hottest gigs I've seen in London, and that's not just because Saturday night was this year's summer here. The group oozed confidence and were slicker than teflon off a duck's back. With the added bonus of bassist supremo Schalk Joubert, the band blasted their way through hits like 'Extra Larry' and '2Face', shoo-be-doo'ed through the swinging 'Luscious Lipstick Lady', motormouthed through various other songs and brought succour to the homesick with the stunning jazzy 'Kom Psalm'. No matter what style they played, they played with style. A number of venues in London are run by a group called the Mean Fiddler, and although the King's Head is not one of them, we did witness a decidedly mean fiddler in Mike 'Renwah' Rennie. This man knows how to make a violin rock, not a talent that is found very often. His deft touches produces some interesting sounds that added to the already impressive body of sound eminating from the stage. Lead singer Mike Hardy's relaxed style meant that the group quickly connected with the audience and maintained their undivided attention throughout. With their gig tonight, Sons of Trout have spawned a faithful London following, and with their caviar attitude, they are a must see. Radio stations country-wide have been quick to pick up on the new album, and with the backing of an extensive SABC3 campaign, Garth looks set to put Durban back on the musical map. Sat. July 27th 2002 Artists in Aid of the 'Every 6 Days' Anti-Women's Abuse Campaign 'Every Six Days' is a new single just released by four top local artists - KB, Carla Dimonde, Miriam Gondwe, and Diggybongz. They have lent their considerable talents to this project in aid of the 'Every 6 Days' anti-abuse campaign in the Western Cape. The horrifying fact is that every six days a South African woman is murdered by her husband, boyfriend, or other intimate partner. The single is being released ahead of National Women's Day and as part of a larger campaign, in conjunction with the Western Cape Network for Violence Against Women. They funded the production of this CD as an educational tool, and it is part of the 'Every 6 Days' campaign throughout the Western Cape. This single is Carla's second outreach on this issue, as last year she had a number 1 hit on GHFM with 'Time to Fight', which also dealt with woman abuse. This track is also featured on the 'Every 6 Days' CD single. Miriam is one of South Africa's hottest rappers. She also sings with Firing Squad, and features on KB's new album called 'Beautiful Vibration' scheduled to be released next week. KB is well known as the star on the popular series 'Backstage'. Miriam and Diggybongz will perform live, followed by a mixing set from Diggy on the turntables. Also performing live will be Black Noise, one of Cape Town's most successful and respected hip-hop outfits. Always known for their strong political and social messages, Black Noise have just recently been signed to a Swedish label. There will also be speakers from the Women's Network, a children`s mural painting and information about abuse will be available.
