After decades of friendship and informal "jamming" together at clubs and festivals, two of Kwa Zulu's most enduring music legends, Madala Kunene and Syd Kitchen, have joined forces to legitimise their relationship with the creation of Baffo Baffo. This exciting trans-cultural collaboration fuses two individual styles - both imbued with the Spirit of Africa - into a unique musical landscape. Kitchen's eclectic use of musical elements - traversing everything from Celtic, Afrikaans, jazz, and Cajun, to Eastern and African influences - is balanced and complemented by Kunene's uncanny ability to consistently develop a Maskanda groove that burrows itself into your consciousness. The combined effect of these two guitarists creates a musical tapestry at once a living embodiment of the richness to be found in "new" South African music. With an album of co-written material planned for recording this year and bookings for the Oppikoppi Festival and other venues confirmed, Baffo Baffo look set to create some serious musical magic. But this time the show will run for two weeks from August 23rd, coinciding with Johannesburg's hosting of The World Summit on Sustainable Development. Not to be outdone by the biggest United Nations event ever, Johnny's show will be a massive audio-visual production. Throughout his two-hour long performance and narration, Johnny's words and songs will be illustrated in Technicolor on a big screen - a musical and pictorial journey of his life. The show - 'Johnny Clegg: A South African Story' - is a carefully crafted cultural history of the music and the dance forms that have influenced the music of Juluka and Savuka over the last 25 years. The show begins with four acoustic unplugged songs drawing on the Zulu guitar Maskande tradition. Part history, part anthropology and lots of music, Johnny demonstrates through the music the evolution of Maskande and how it influenced aspects of rhythm and bass guitar. The second half features Johnny and the Johnny Clegg Band running through all the hits of Juluka and Savuka. The show runs from August 23 to September 8 and tickets go on sale Thursday May 24th. Tickets range from R125 to R275 through Computicket. (excluding service charges). Group Ticket Sales - for parties of ten or more at a discount of 10% - are available only through The Johannesburg Civic Theatre by calling (011) 403 3408. Toots' legendary harmonica has been heard on everything from the soundtrack to 'Midnight Cowboy' to countless Quincy Jones albums, and from Louis Armstrong's Chrysler commercial to many fine jazz albums. Age has not slowed the man down - last year Toots did 250 concerts world-wide! At the North Sea Jazz Festival in Cape Town this year Nigel spoke at length to Toots and to his manager Dirk Godts. He includes some sound bites from these conversations in 'Between A Smile And A Tear', which also features some live recordings from the festival, including two versions of Toots' hit, 'Bluesette'. From bebop to ballads, Toots does it all. Celebrate his music with SAfm on Monday. __________________________________________ 2.CHARTS ----------- SA ROCK DIGEST TOP MP3 DOWNLOADS OF THE WEEK http://www.sarockdigest.com/mp3 This week [last week] (highest position) Song - Artist (label) 1. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES --------------------------------------------------- -------------- NEW RELEASES -------------- SHARON KATZ AND THE PEACE TRAIN - 'IMBIZO' [APR CD 1063] "Imbizo" is a Zulu word meaning "a cultural gathering of hearts and minds." To record this CD, Sharon Katz convened her own special imbizo, a collaboration of 70 musicians from South Africa, West Africa, and the United States. Sharon's sensuous alto voice and stirring guitar work set the tone of optimism and strength that rings through 'Imbizo's 12 songs, mostly Katz originals. Among those performing on the CD are members of her current international Peace Train band, and several other African musicians (bassist Bakithi Kumalo, keyboardist Tony Cedras, percussionist Okyerema Asante) who are veterans of Paul Simon's 'Graceland' album and tours. There's also percussionist Steve Shehan, who appeared on a subsequent Paul Simon release, and trumpeter Matt Cappy, a member of Grammy-nominated Jill Scott's touring band. The music they create gracefully spans the world music, jazz, folk and rock genres as Sharon addresses the bittersweet conditions of South African life, as well as more intimate subjects of love and personal relationships. From the "high-life" Afropop of songs like 'Crazy Life', 'Sanalwami', and 'Bayangeseba' to the propulsive funk of 'Mandela' and 'Peace Train', from the delicate romanticism of 'Simple Things in Life' and 'Take Me Home' to the light jazz breezes of 'Accra' and the rap-influenced 'Why O Why', these are moving songs full of glorious instrumentation, and a sound that can't be pigeonholed. This is music for dancing, for feeling, for loving. Sharon Katz & The Peace Train have mastered the international language of communication on 'Imbizo'. The album will be released in SA shortly. Available soon at http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 Details: http://www.appleseedrec.com http://www.sharonkatz.com ------------------- SOIL 7t7 ALBUM ON THE WAY Soil 7t7 was formed in the autumn of 2000 and has built up a reputable name in the Pretoria music scene over the last year and a half. They started out as a vibrant live act, and the first show drew approximately 130-150 people to Boogie Nights in Pretoria. From there on, there was no looking back, seeing that they already featured on various television shows such as the Casper Rasper Show and big festivals like Oppikoppi. The Band consists of three members (and soon a DJ). Their bassist, Jay Bolton formed the concept, after conducting a very successful solo project in April 2000. He approached the very talented Franco Jamneck, also a lighting and sound engineer, to join him in realising his vision of becoming well-known SA musicians. Soon after that Bertus van Zyl, the drummer, was added to the magical mix and the song writing for a new paradigm in funk music started. Almost a year later, the infiltration of the South African music market began. Myles, a well known 206 DJ, (DJ Miles mixed the album '206 - 18 Heavyweight Beats') joined the band for several performances. Although not a permanent member of the band, for now, DJ Miles will be featured on the CD and if you're lucky enough, you'll catch him live on stage at some of the Soil 7t7 gigs. Although the CD will be completed by September 2002, the release date has not been made public yet, so keep you eyes and ears open and watch the press for details. mailto:soil7t7@cherry.co.za Tel/Fax: 012 800 1474 ------- DEMOS ------- MIKE DE JAGER - DREAM (Independent) 'Dream' is a 6-track demo CD from Mike de Jager who is currently living (and playing) in England. All the songs are guitar-driven instrumentals in a great blues-rock style. Mike's obvious influences include Joe Satriani, Santana, the blues-era Gary Moore and possibly SA's own Mauritz Lotz. 'The Chug Chug Song' chugs along nicely, and 'The Dream' is very trance-y, but the highlight is the 7 minute 'Oh Why?'. Rock on Mike. Cover scan, track list and weblink at: http://rock.co.za/legends/2000plus/mike_de_jager.html --------------- COMPILATIONS --------------- GRIND Here's a great birthday present - a compilation by Barney Simon in honour of Blunt magazine's fifth birthday - with more to come hopefully, as this is titled the first edition... blunt (with a small 'b') "...is a magazine that reflects South African youth culture in a real way. Its contents are a combination of sports such as skateboarding, BMX, snowboarding and the like; lifestyle, travel, TV, girls, video games and of course music". That should give you a fair idea of the music on offer here... Interesting CD this - my first impression before I stuck it in the player was something like: "What's all this old s**t stuck in-between here?" You see, this is a different take on a compilation, packed with seventeen kicking punk, rock and hardcore tracks - both new and old, local and foreign... another thing I found unusual on first impression... All that went out the window after the first few tracks, and by about the time Hog Hoggidy Hog's 'Baby One More Time' kicked in... I was sold on the concept. Classic tracks like House of Pain's 'Jump Around', the Ramones' 'Sheena is a Punk Rocker', and of course, the classic Beastie Boys' 'Girls' are sprinkled in between all the local big boys - Jimmy 12", Martin Rocka, Tweak and...... the Psycho Reptiles! Talk about a (welcome) blast from the past! I think old Barney Simon had something to do with that one - seeing as his name is credited with the creative concept(!). They're the grand old men of the collection, one of the more notable local punk bands of the 80's, and I'm sure more than one group here could cite them as an influence. Their wild and energetic psycho-billy sound filled many a club back in their day... The Phoebes, SA's all-girl punk band's contribution is a great version of Wendy Oldfield (and Sweatband)'s 'This Boy', and Tweak's song 'Britney Spears' is a perfect addition to this set. Jimmy 12" rocking track 'Trap Door Lucy' and Millencolin's excellent 'No Cigar' all make for an excellent compilation. This is Barney through and through, and it's great! The thing I like the most about this selection is it's hard to tell the difference between the local talent & the foreign additions - it shows that South African music of all genres is undoubtedly of an international standard. The local content far outweighs the rest, which is a good sign if this is a trend of things to come... blunt magazine have been doing a lot to support local music over the last few years - notably the addition of the blunt development stage at Splashy Fen, the annual music festival in the Drakensberg. Respect guys, and keep it up! Your country needs you! Oi! Chris Pefanis PC Music http://www.pcmusic.co.za Reprinted here by kind permission of Josh Adler, Editor of PC Music. ----------------- SELECTION #2 Free CD with the June issue of SL magazine R24.95 gets you a great 15-track CD of the latest in new rock, hip hop and dance music of which only 4 are not South African. The CD opens with the funky, jazzy 'Trumpet Vibes' by BOP (Brothers of Peace) and features the incredible trumpet playing of Hugh Masakela. This track should have been on the '2002 FIFA World Cup' CD rather than the boring 'Zimbi 'ndaba'. 'Family Of One' by the Originz, which is an exclusive track on this compilation, captures the diversity of the people of South Africa. Not My Dog rock hard with a cover of the Koos Kombuis song 'Verslaaf' (original title: 'Verslaaf aan Ruk 'n Rol') and Wonderboom's cover of Falling Mirror's classic 'Johnny Calls The Chemist' is also here. South African bands covering other South African artists... is there a trend here? I hope so. Other songs include TKZee with the bouncy 'My Boyz', Godessa with the hard-hitting 'Social Ills', Tweak's 'Oo La La' and Anti-Hero with the sublime 'Time To Do'. Oh... and stuck under this great CD is a magazine. See Digest issue #153 for the review of 'Selection #1' http://www.sarockdigest.com/archives/issue_153.txt ---------------- THE ULTIMATE ROCK COLLECTION The ultimate rock collection? Really? Well actually yes it is, though "... from the 70s" should perhaps have been added to the title. Almost all the songs on this CD are from Rock's 70's heyday, except for a couple of tracks like Cream's 'Sunshine Of Your Love' (1968) and Rush's 'Tom Saywer' (1981), but they still fit in perfectly here among their peers. And those peers include 'Paranoid' - Black Sabbath, 'Long Train Running' - Doobie Brothers, 'Radar Love' - Golden Earring, 'Smoke On The Water' - Deep Purple (the classic live version from 'Made In Japan'), 'Breadfan' - Budgie, 'Can't Get Enough' - Bad Company, 'All Right Now' - Free and... well, the list isn't endless, but it is pretty extensive. 32 classic rock songs all-in-all in fact. This 2CD set compiled by Chris Venter from Universal also includes tracks by Alice Cooper, The Who, Toto, ZZ Top, Dire Straits, Boston, Nazareth, Slade, Status Quo and Steppenwolf. If you're over 40, buy it and revel in nostalgia... or if you're under 30, buy it and find out what your dad is always going on about. Highly recommended. PS If you're in your 30s buy 'Rocking Against The System' or 'Absolute High-Energy' (reviewed next week). ---------- ONE WORLD ---------- Buy South African CDs at One World http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 ------------- MORE REVIEWS ------------- More reviews can be found at: Open Record http://www.openrecord.co.za Amuzine http://rock.co.za/reviews.htm ______________________________________________ 4. CLASSIC ROCK ---------------- SHILOH'S CORNER ------------------------------- CHRIS FARLOWE (Thunder Heart) ------------------------------- Part 1 of 3 In the mid-fifties a certain John Henry and his skiffle group walked away with the 'all-England Skiffle Cup' after a magnificent performance at Tottenham's Mecca ballroom. Somewhere around 1958, John Henry Deighton changed his name to Chris Farlowe out of reverence to the American jazz guitarist Tal Farlow. Thus came the first line-up of Chris Farlowe and the Thunderbirds (named after the US Ford car). The initial line-up featured the talents of an extravagant lead guitarist called Bobby Taylor. Taylor's jazzy licks created a strong drawcard around the club area of Northern London. During 1961 and 1962, Chris and the Thunderbirds served most of their residency in Hamburg alongside the Merseybeat invasion. Renowned for his gritty vocal ability, Chris would pound into the rockabilly that was slowly overwhelming the trad of downtown London. His fellow peers - Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames, Zoot Money and Cyril Davies - created a niche for the rebellious and frustrated post war working class. Their audience was hardy partisans who felt little or nothing for the clean, soaking Mersey sound, and would rather haunt venues secured by the blues-wailing Primitives, Blues Breakers, Yardbirds and the Rolling Stones. Chris released his debut single 'Air Travel' through the auspices of a cautious Decca contract. The following year he signed with EMI's Columbia label and released five singles. Slowly the doors opened to a vocalist who demonstrated a powerful stage presence and bellowed total authority and respect wherever he played. The first stage of the Thunderbirds, which included Bobby Taylor (guitar), Rickie Charman (bass), Johnny Wise (drums), and complemented by session man Nicky Hopkins (piano), received a thorough shake-up. Enter Dave Greenslade on keyboards, Albert Lee (guitar), Bugs Waddell (bass), Neil Hague (drums) and Joe Meek protégé, Gary Temple, on harmonica and percussion. This formidable line-up stayed together for three years and earned the group a reputation that was not easily rivalled. When Chris performed on 'Ready, Steady, Go', the audience was paralysed by the powerful vocal and stage craft that Chris projected. In 1965 he released his tour-de-force single' 'Stormy Monday Blues', with (incorrect!) credit to Little Joe Cook. Sometime during 1966 Mick Jagger, one of Chris' most ardent fans, introduced him to producer/manager Andrew 'Loog' Oldham. Chris was immediately signed up on the Immediate label. The next five singles that Chris released would pave the way for his solo career. The first was Lee Hazelwood's 'The Fool', followed by a re-write of Roy Head's 'Treat Her Right', now labelled 'Treat Her Good'. Then there were Wilson Picket's 'In The Midnight Hour', 'Satisfaction' by the Stones, and the Otis Redding classic 'Mister Pitiful'. Shiloh Noone, Cape Town mailto:shiloh@sarockdigest.com Blues and Variation Fine Music Radio 101.3 FM Wednesdays 10 pm -------------- USA FOR AFRICA Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music PEACH - 'ON LOAN FOR EVOLUTION' (Retro Fresh FRESHCD 123) If I had been in SA during Peach's heyday, I'd have been a Peach groupie. These peaches are honeys. I can hear myself say in a cosmopolitan baritone: "I saw you from across The Boogie Barn and had to know you." (Well, I'd say this to Tini, not to Allan Rosenberg, mentor and guitarist.) Peach made serious fun guitars and drums rock without strings. Musically of a certain time, that a punky late-Seventies early-Eighties New Wave sound time, but 'On Loan for Evolution' is still eminently listenable. And they're cute. Real people with real energy playing rock. The lyrics aren't ye olde love songs. 'The Trick', about schoolgirl's lust for her teacher doesn't quite count as a dreamy romantic number -- not with its "He's a sex machine!" refrain. Not all the songs are rocking winners, however. For one,'Competition' just sort of shuffles along, and 'Roller Coaster' doesn't have any thrills. The few weaker songs seem concentrated near the end. But Peach's crisp guitars, strong drums, and girl vocals on numbers like 'Look Sharp', 'A Lot of Things', 'Nobody Loves You', 'Nightmare', 'Complicated Game', 'Flesh 'n Steel', and others on the remastered 'On Loan for Evolution' still comes up tails: a classic. The white-jacketed technicians at Retro Fresh have transferred vinyl to digital with an excess of clarity. With characteristic élan, Retro Fresh has added a bonus track that is more than a curiosity, as most bonus tracks seem to be, but a good song in its own right. Then there are the copious liner notes and photos. Nice to listen to, nice to look at. Peach must have packed the energy into their live rock shows. My favorite Peach is MIA in Jo'burg, but tell me, who's your favorite Peach? Peach http://rock.co.za/legends/peach Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com ------------------ LONDON LEKKER London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music LORNE ORDER Anton Goosen at the Lorne Arms Wathamstowe 15 June 2002 It's evening and Anton Goosen is on stage at the Lorne Arms. But why is he wearing a cap? Well if Mick Jagger can have a Night-hoed, why can't Anton? After all, the contribution Mr Goosen has made to the SA Rock scene entitles him to whatever headgear he chooses. Right, now that we've got the pomp and ceremony over with, let's get down to some fine tuned rock. It seemed to me that there were two audiences in tonight. One came to see Anton Goosen, the rock legend, and one to see Anton Goosen, the guy who sang all those lekker songs like 'Blommetjie' and 'Boy van Die Suburbs'. This showed as he kicked off with some of his new material off ''n Vis in Die Bos' which was well received by a small knot at the front, but people nearer the back seemed bored. Sound problems didn't help as the lyrics were difficult to hear. However as the evening wore on, and the old favourites were brought out, the crowd was brought to the boil, singing along at the top of their voices and bouncing around with wilful abandon. A perfect tonic for any bouts of homesickness. From a musical perspective, I thought his new stuff was better than the old, but the old certainly scored higher on the vibe-ometer. But old or new, all songs were made larger than life by the high profile Bushrock Band that accompanied Goosen. Schalk 'Amajuba' Joubert on bass and Anton 'No relation of Louis' L'Amour on guitar where nothing short of breathtaking, while Johnny Clegg's drummer Barry van Zyl pounded with purpose. Lisa 'Nie die een met die Klavier' Swart brightened the set with her backing vocals and sunny smile. Unfortunately violinist Mike Rennie (from the Sons of Trout), was the worst victim of the sound problems, as often the volume was too low on his mike, but the bits we got to hear where impressive. During the encore, each band member got a chance in the spotlight, and they all took with great aplomb and style that left one just drooling for more and wondering if the whole band should be knighted. (Well MayBE). The latter was 'I Can't Tell The Bottom From The Top' which had charted in 1970. Paul Simon was meanwhile enjoying his 11th week on the top 20 with 'Mother and Child Reunion' but was slowly slipping. Abba meanwhile celebrated their 6th number 1 in 4 years, breaking Julie Covington's 7 week run at the top. This neatly coincided with Argentina's early exit from the world cup 25 years on. Pussycat clocked up their 4th top 10 hit with 'My Broken Souvenirs' 20 years ago, Dr Hook's politically incorrect 'Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk' stormed into the top 5 while Anneli van Rooyen clung on to her top 5 position for the 3rd week, but was still SA's only representative in the above charts. Sisters Mel & Kim Appleby climbed into the top 5 in 1987 with the Stock, Aitken & Waterman produced 'Respectable'. Mel sadly died of cancer in 1990. Boy George spent his 4th week at the top with the cover of Bread's 'Everything I Own'. Here is a extract from the sleeves notes: "Halfway Up The Stairs", along with "Silver Words", was written and released by a Detroit artist named Rodriguez, born Sixto Diaz Rodriguez in 1942. Both songs were found on Rodriguez's 'Coming From Reality' album, recorded in London and released in 1971 on the Sussex label, distributed by A&M in the USA. Sixto Rodriguez started his career on the US Impact label in the mid sixties and still lives in Detroit to this day. Perhaps this has been noticed and I am repeating someone else's thoughts... With their attitude, their choice of instrumentation and direction; and above all a total lack of egomania in their orbit; they have quickly moved towards establishing themselves with a music that is at once refreshing, organic and very real. With the release of their album "The Unknown", they have created a beautiful musical landscape that will now afford them the opportunity of reaching that wider world.
