This dynamic Cape Town hard rock quartet won the initial Stage Magazine Recording Sponsorship competition and appeared alongside the Venessa Nolan Band, Soma, Fabulous Crew, Bleach and About Blank in the River Club’s upstairs venue (see full review below). Kelvin Declined recorded their sponsored demo at the Sunset Recording Studios album in 2001, and then returned there earlier this year to record their first full album with Jurgen von Wechmar. The album, which is released on Rhythm Records, succeeds in capturing most of the spark and humour of the band’s live gigs, as well as their consistent supply of memorable songs - including first single ‘42’, which was described by 5FM’s Barney Simon as "being a new song from a top international band, who happen to come from South Africa". Following their album launch at the same River Club venue on Friday April 26, Kelvin Declined will be appearing at the ‘Mountain Of Music’ charity event, which will be taking place at The Jam and 206 on Tuesday April 30. A number of Cape Town, and possibly national, acts will be making guest appearances at these two venues throughout the evening. The ‘Mountain Of Music’ project is a combined effort to raise funds, and a pile of musical instruments, for the Homestead, which provides accommodation, as well as upliftment and educational programs, aimed at rehabilitating the many street children in Cape Town. Artists already confirmed are Kobus!, Kelvin Declined, Venessa Nolan, New World Inside, Hog Hoggidy Hog, Natalia, and Two Wise Men (featuring Tigger Reunert). More names are expected to be added to the line-up in the next few weeks. There will be an entrance fee of R20 for the charity event, and/or a donation of any type of (working) musical instrument. It focused on the legendary ‘Voëlvry’ tour from a few years before, and introduced a stunned nation to a new breed of artists like Koos Kombuis, Johannes Kerkorrel, Bernoldus Niemand, Mr Mac & The Genuines, and The Kêrels. Following the recent release of the original ‘Voëlvry’ album on CD, Sheer Sound has announced that the previously unavailable second live album, ‘Voëlvry - Die Tour’, has now also been released. Sheer Sound has also licensed and released two other Shifty titles - Jennifer Ferguson’s ‘Hand Around the Heart’ and ‘Sankomota’ - all previously available on the Tic Tic Bang label. ‘Voëlvry - Die Toer’ is set to bring back a lot of memories for those who were fortunate enough to have experienced the events and music of those "anarkistiese" days. It features live performances from Koos Kombuis, the Gereformeerde Blues Band with Johannes Kerkorrel, and Bernoldus Niemand. The album was recorded at Tukkies (University of Pretoria) in 1989. In his sleeve notes for this live album, Koos Kombuis said: "I loved the idea of a Voëlvry Live release - the idea really made sense, especially in the light of the renewed interest in that period today. The original live performances were so much more vibrant than I remembered. More than anything else, relistening to the actual Voëlvry concerts material I had not actually heard for so many years - many of these songs were never included on the more well-known albums of the period! - brought back a wealth of memories, some pleasant, others heart-wrenchingly acute, even painful." LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES --------------------------------------------------- PICTURE PERFECT - PEREZ (SOVEREIGN) A quick update: These four band members - Nic Olson (guitars, vocals), Matt Wilkenson (guitars, vocals), Adam Connor (bass, vocals) and Mike Goodard (drums, vocals) - split from other groups, formed Perez, and made their live debut at Splashy Fen 2001, almost a year ago. ‘Wasted Out’ became an early anthem before 5FM and the Powerzone website picked up on the band, beginning an extended period of gigs, airplay and chart success. The band played a special Durban hometown concert, followed by acclaimed appearances at the Grahamstown Festival and OppiKoppi, a short coastal tour, and a slot on the 5FM Birthday Bash bill. To top it off, Perez then ended the year headlining the 5FM Summer Tour. Both the band’s first two singles, ‘Wasted Out’ and ‘Picture Perfect’ reached number 1 on 5FM’s ‘High Five At 5’ charts. So Perez have gained themselves a reputation as a very striking live band, all bursting energy and rock moves, but that’s not an easy quality to capture on a studio album. Ex-Squeal man David Birch got the production nod and we now have ‘Picture Perfect’, the resulting debut album on the Sovereign label. The advance word is that Perez are the next big SA rock thing so we need to separate the hype from the hip as we check out this 11-track offering. Thankfully, ‘Picture Perfect’ is an extremely likeable and impressive piece of work, and Perez have an attractive rock sound with two main vocalists, lots of stirring guitar, and a rock-solid rhythm section. The two opening tracks, ‘Blow Me’ and ‘Come Down’ are clear signals of Perez’s muscular intent and songwriting skills. ‘Blow Me’, which is built around a speeded-up ‘Baba O’Reilly’ riff, illustrates how well this band have forged their own rock sound and it confidently hits all the right opening buttons. ‘Picture Perfect’, the band’s big album-launching single, again sounds like a classic rock track, but lets itself down with an overuse of the title hook. ‘Yellow Lie’ and ‘Wasted Out’ add strength and substance to the middle of the album, and ‘Picture Perfect’ closes with another great double header of ‘Dreams and Troubles’ and ‘Breathe Me Down’. The latter, an effective use of a contrasting soft acoustic verse with a loud chorus, is listed as a bonus track, but still manages to show up similar-styled but weaker tracks like ‘Detour’, ‘Marina’, and ‘Don’t Wait For Darkness’. First albums are not easy to make (or review!), but this debut effort from Perez is a high-quality rock album that stands up confidently to any debut released in South Africa over the past decade. Perez have (to quote certain "judges") the songs, the sound, the look, and are therefore (with the "benefit of the doubt") strong contenders for the title of SA’s newest ‘Rock Idols’. (SS) Perez http://rock.co.za/legends/2000plus/perez.html -------------------- SEIZE THE DAY - BEAM Last week we gave you the full story of the Vodacom ad jingle that's now become a full song, 'Seize The Day'. What we didn't tell you is that this song is the opening track on Mark Pilgrim's 'Radio Rock' compilation CD which has just been released by EMI. Also on this excellent CD are the band formally known as Saron Gas with '69 Tea'. Other artists include the Rembrandts with the "Friends" theme 'I'll Be There For You', Lit with 'Over My Head', The Pixies, Everclear, Supernaturals, 3 Doors Down and a whole bunch of other bands played by Mark Pilgrim on his Weekend Breakfast Show on 5FM. ---------------- LEGENDARY BEAUTY - SILEX (Intervention Arts) http://rock.co.za/legends/2000plus/silex.html Gothrock album produced by the SA King of the Goths himself, Ashton Nyte. Dark and brooding {duh - ed}, with titles like 'Fields Of Grey', 'Angel', 'Respect for Pain' and 'The End Is Near', this CD will appeal to all fans of The Awakening, The Mission and Sisters Of Mercy. --------------- HOMEGROWN (EMI) http://rock.co.za/legends/2000plus/homegrown.html If you read the SA Rock Digest charts each week and think to yourself, "I've never heard of most of this stuff", then this CD will rectify that. 'Homegrown' is a really great retrospective CD of South African rock music from the last 3 years or so. Most of the best and biggest names of the SA rock, pop, dance and even kwaito genres are here. And if you are a avid follower of the song and album charts published each week in the SA Rock Digest, you will find 10 Top 10 songs (including 4 chart-toppers), tracks taken off at least 6 Digest Top 10 albums and a song off the Digest's Album Of The Year for 2001, 'Poles Apart' by Karen Zoid. 'Homegrown' opens with the gentle and catchy R.E.M.-like 'Indigo Girl' by Watershed which went to #3 on the Digest charts and was off the chart-topping album 'In The Meantime'. By the way The Indigo Girls from USA recorded a song in 1990 called 'Watershed' - interesting, hey? 'Life', the theme from the Big Brother SA reality TV show sung by Semisane shot to the top spot and is taken off the second edition of the number 1 album 'A Life Less Strange'. The nu-metal sound of Saron Gas (now known as Seether) is represented here with the slow and powerful 'Fine Again'. Taken off their number 2 album 'Fragile'. South Africa's one-man Backstreet Boys, Danny K, sings his chart-topping hit 'Hurts So Bad' which is off his number 2 self-titled album. Adrian Shannon's heartfelt tribute to his young daughter 'My Angel' was a number 4 hit last year. Afrikaans rock chick Karen Zoid sings 'Southern Skies' which is off her bilingual debut 'Poles Apart', the SA Rock Digest Album Of The Year for 2001. 'Stumbling Shore' is sung by Tree 63 who were originally known simply as Tree and have had great success overseas. The chart-topping song 'All Roads' by Liesl Graham is off her number 1 album 'Something To Believe'. One of South Africa's best-loved poprock bands is the Counting Crows-style Just Jinger who went to number 1 with 'Your Song' (no relation to Elton John's early 70s hit) off 'Strange World' (#6), and it also appears on their highly recommended 'Greatest Hits' CD which went to number 2. 'Heroes', which has nothing to do with the David Bowie song of the same name, is a stunning rock song by Leery. And Bon Jovi fans will love Justin Bergh's title track off his number 3 album, 'Love The Sinner'. Dance music is represented here by Roger Goode with 'To Move You', 'Haya (Tekstylez mix)' by Ryan Dent and 'Xplicit' by Heatseeker which also appeared on the '5FM Showcase 2' album. And not forgetting the King of Kwaito, Mandoza, with the very popular 'Nkalakatha' which was number 2 on the Digest charts and is taken off the album of the same name which went to #16 in 2000. The other artists on this CD are: Grannysmith, Egyptian Nursery, Mean Mr Mustard and Henry Ate. Disc one of the recently released 'SA Top 40 Hits Of All Time Volume 6' also covers much of the same ground as this CD, but there are only 2 repeated tracks between the 2 albums. The rest are different songs by the same artists such as 'Only When It Rains' by Mean Mr Mustard ('Without You' appears on 'Homegrown'), and also features other big name bands like Wonderboom, Springbok Nude Girls and Amersham which are not on the 'Homegrown' CD. Both albums are highly recommended. Homegrown http://rock.co.za/legends/2000plus/homegrown.html SA Top 40 Hits Of All Time http://rock.co.za/legends/2000plus/top40_6.html ------------------- THE RETURN OF THE KWAITO WHITE-OU Francois Henning - aka Lekgoa - is the Afrikaans white boy who made an impact on what many imagine is a predominantly black kwaito scene, when he unleashed his debut album - ‘Basetsane’ - on an unsuspecting public. Crammed with booty-shaking kwaito licks fused with house and garage, the album made a huge impact on audiences and critics. Lekgoa began speaking Sotho when he was just six years old, wanting to develop a friendship with his mate Mpho. This passion for a new language extended into high school and into Lekgoa’s social life, which consisted of many journeys to soccer matches to catch a glimpse of his favourite stars performing before kick-off. This was a result of the star’s life-long passion for township music. The young Lekgoa couldn’t get enough of artists such as Brenda Fassie, Yvonna Chaka Chaka and Chicco, who dominated the local Eighties dance scene. When kwaito began making an impact in the townships, and filtered into the rest of the country, Lekgoa was gripped by the bug and knew exactly what he wanted to do. He recorded a demo and knocked on many doors until Gallo Music Productions took him under its wing. ‘Basetsane’ put him on the map with its songs performed in English, Sotho and popular township lingo. Now, with the country sitting up and paying attention, it is time for album number two. This new album, ‘Ngamla Yoba’ (township lingo which, roughly translated, means "the coolest white man"), has just been released by Gallo. It explores various themes in Lekgoa’s life, and offers a window into Lekgoa’s childhood with tracks like ‘Imbizo’ ("Street party"), which tells the tale of the young boy heading into the townships to see Brenda Fassie, and the opening track, ‘Makoti’ ("My bride"), which is a traditional Sotho track that tells the story of a white boy marrying a black girl in the traditional Sotho manner. Lekgoa’s predominant theme of "being yourself and celebrating who you are and giving thanks for all of it," is also explored in tracks like ‘Shake A Dibono’ ("Shake your ass") and ‘Ndoda’ ("The man"). Welcome back Honky Cat! -------------------- STATE FAR BETTER State Far Better is an unusual name for a band, until (as they suggest) you put an ‘A’ in front of it and you have an idea of where the band’s music takes them and, hopefully us. So far so good, based on the three-song demo currently doing the rounds and picking up some raised eyebrows. State Far Better began at Stellenbosch University during 2001 and it was only after final exams that these four graduates - Nicky Bernard (b), Sebastian Bok (v), Deon Conradie (g), and Jacques Joubert (d) - knuckled down to their music careers. In December they toured the South Coast and then returned for a full "tour" of the Cape Town rock circuit. During March the band recorded their demo at Paris Studios in Fish Hoek and are now looking at an EP later in the year, and full album sometime towards the middle of 2003. These first three songs - ‘Yesterday’, ‘Everytime’ and ‘Beneath’ - are melodic rock pieces with ‘Everytime’ jumping out with its softer touch and great chorus. ------------------ NEW RELEASES FROM ONEWORLD.CO.ZA http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 Hugh Masekela's new album ‘Time’ is already getting tons of airplay on local radio stations. Tracks getting all the attention are ‘Happy Mama’ and ‘Conchita’. Andile Yenana, the pianist on albums by Zim Ngqawana, Voice, Marcus Wyatt and Suthukazi, has released his first solo album, ‘We Used To Dance’, and it's a gem. Melt 2000 are back with some new compilations that include ‘Roots & Ancestors 1’, which features traditional music of mostly the Southern Tribes of South Africa and includes artists like Busi Mhlongo and Amampondo. ‘Global Vibes South Africa’ includes SA artists who have made an impact on the world music scene. ‘Afrika Meltdown’ contains previously unreleased remixes of artists like Mandoza and Moses Taiwa Molelekwa. ‘Jazzin' & Jivin’’ is a compilation containing some of the best new SA Jazz artists with tracks from Sipho Gumede, Vusi Khumalo and many more. Lungiswa, the backing vocalist from Amampondo, releases her second album 'Unonkala' on Sony Music SA. This album is smooth and sultry and in the same vein as Dorothy Masuka and Judith Sephuma. Ghetto Son is the latest addition to SA's Kwaito contingent and his debut album ‘Charlie’ is available now! David Kramer returns with his latest work, ‘Karoo Kitaar Blues’, which features artists like Tokas Lodewyk, Hannes Coetzee and more. The album was recorded live at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town and the CD includes video clips of the performers. Shifty Records has made its fine catalogue available again. Watch out for those two ‘Voëlvry’ albums, as well as titles from artists including Bernoldus Niemand, Sankomota, Urban Creep and Jennifer Ferguson - now or soon available from Oneworld. CLASSIC ROCK ---------------- SHILOH'S CORNER VELVET UNDERGROUND (in the shadow of the avant-garde) Part 3 of 3 The power struggle between Reed and Cale continued until the magnificent album "Loaded". "Loaded" reflected the climatic orgasm of a group where talented musicians had reached that definitive level of no return. Classics like "Sweet Jane" and "Lonesome cowboy Bill" would rise up in the eighties with the new romantic order. The Velvet forged a fashion of their own, creating outstanding originals like "Oh! Sweet nothing" and the slithery "I found a reason". Lou Reed went solo in 1971 and forged an outstanding career. His live performances always included some of the Velvet standards. Mo Tucker left the group to have a baby and then returned to feature on the "Loaded" line-up. The punk revival of the seventies often pay homage to the Underground as their seminal influence. Cale and Reed were inducted to the Rock and Roll hall of fame in 1996. Sadly Sterling Morrison died a few months earlier. Nico tragically died in a cycling accident in 1988. Like the Doors they steered away from the flower power and reflected the crippled disorder of the times. They were the poets of the gutter, continually reminding us of the slime that gathered in the greasy corners of the late night clubs. Truth is never comfortable. The line-up has a solid array of tracks. There are eleven songs from eleven RetroFresh CDs from ten bands: éVoid, Via Afrika, The Dynamics, Otis Waygood Blues Band, Hawk, Dog Detachment, Lesley Rae Dowling, Falling Mirror, Circus and Suck. One track from each RetroFresh release (so far) of classic SA rock, and all fine albums. I should know, I support RetroFresh with my dollars-into-Rands and wouldn't have it any other way. Though I already own a copy of Freedoms Children's 'Galactic Vibes', (an Austrian bootleg chanced upon in Austin, Texas), I'll buy the RetroFresh release to soar with the expert remastering from Benjy Mudie and the guys and girls at Fresh Music. Honestly, I can hardly wait to hear 'The Homecoming' on the Retro Fresh CD. The latest RetroFresh release, or re-release really, is Peach's 'On Loan for Evolution'. I've said it before and I'll say it again, these are good days to be a fan of South African rock, new and classic. Explore FreshMusic and RetroFresh at http://www.freshmusic.co.za. Check out the upcoming RetroFresh releases, too. As an outsider who's thrilled about SA rock past and present, I can only imagine the effect looking at the RetroFresh past and future releases will have on someone for whom this music is a cherished part of his or her youth. If you missed this free sampler, you may buy the eleven CDs to make your own sampler. But if you're like me, you own them all already and the Sampler is forty-seven-plus minutes of great music. What you want is a sample of what's coming up because you're too impatient. Singing a few of their well known hits like 'Eh Bahran', 'Sweet Valley' and 'Light me a Light' to an enthusiastic audience, they did what they do best... entertain. As the title suggests, the album was recorded live at the Planetarium in Cape Town. The live feel of the album comes from the snippets of introductions that the group give to the songs, the applause at the end of each song and the occasional laugh heard during a couple of the tracks, other than this, the quality of the performance and recording is studio quality. This despite Graham Weir confiding to me that a couple of notes were missed during the recording. A free pocket protector to anyone who spots these. Over the past 5 years, Ntmm have moved away from covering classic rock and pop tunes to performing original material, and this album clearly shows this trend with only 2 of the 12 tracks not being penned by a group member. The album opens with an intricately arranged performance of Mozart's 'Rondo Alla Turka' and moves into the Gregorian chant opening of the powerful Graham Weir composition 'Spiritus Sanctus' where the bass and baritone sounds vibrate deliciously down the spine. This changing of styles occurs throughout the show with the songs varying from the Eastern tinged 'Free to Be' and 'Eh Baharan' through the nonsense fun of 'Little Ellie Eggnot' and 'My Knight in Rusty Armour' to the jazzy 'Picasso'. The latter being a Tina Schouw composition which appeared on her critically acclaimed 'Bleed' album. However, if you've had a tough day at work, I do recommend coming home, putting headphones on, turning off the lights and let the beauty of the bittersweet 'Sad Day' massage away your troubles. The harmonies between Christine Weir and Tina Schouw on this go beyond goosebump territory. Apart from the Mozart tune, the other non-original composition is a fitting tribute version of James Phillips' 'Light me a Light' which remains moving years after James' death, and this is due to the respectfulness the Mass have always shown this song. Moving, funny, intelligent, and all in perfect harmony, this is an album of mature songs that weaves voice around voice in a tapestry of musical styles, framed by a collection of wonderful voices. None of this review is aimed at Midnight Mass fans as I know you've already got your copy (or will get it at the earliest opportunity), but rather it's for those of you who don't know who they are. René Mullenders Rene@SA-Music.com ------------------ PIET BOTHA http://www.pietbotha.com I saw Piet perform at Firkin in Centurion. He did a lot of his brilliant original songs, but he also did a couple "covers". There is this one song he did about a hound on the run, and something about Nazareth. I would like to know if it's possible, what the song's name is, and who is the artist. I would like to see a "Various" CD from Piet where he only does "covers" because all the cover songs are brilliant. Johan mailto:johan@zenardo.co.za {'The Kid He Came From Nazareth' is a Freedoms Children's song off the classic album 'Astra' released in 1970. The band Wildebeest (which featured Piet Botha on bass) covered this song in concert, but re-titled it 'Russian and Chips'. It was recorded in 1981 for the live album 'Bushrock 1'. Other songs that Piet and Jack Hammer play live include Led Zep's 'Tangerine', Pink Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here', Guns 'n Roses' 'Sweet Child O' Mine', The Doors' 'Texas Radio and the Big Beat' and a number of Robert Johnson blues classics such as 'Love In Vain' which the Rolling Stones also did. - ed} ------------------ BASSIST WANTED Bassist wanted to join original Jo'burg based rock band. Stage Magazine, which appears quarterly, focuses on SA music of all genres, with a strong emphasis on rock and live performances. Gustav Andor and Lizl Strauss, the dynamic duo behind the magazine, decided to put their money where their hearts are and instituted these band competitions in conjunction with some local studios. For their third competition, Madoda Mditswa and the Beach Road Studios (SABC) stepped in as co-sponsors and look set to help take this project to new heights. Kelvin Declined and Enoch were the winners of the first two competitions, and Soma are about to enter the Beach Road Studios with a R14, 000 recording deal in their pockets after taking the honours during March 2002. These Stage Recording Sponsorship band competitions will run quarterly in conjunction with the magazine. The River Club event showcased these and other acts in a brisk and entertaining "cross-genre" parade of new SA talent. The Venessa Nolan Band debuted a new bass player (Skalk van der Merwe) and opened the show with a typically sparkling and confident set, playing mostly tracks off the ‘Burn’ album, with a few interesting new ones tucked in there (the unreleased ‘Favourite Time Of Day’ is always a highlight). Soma were up next, but the tight four-piece failed to energise the crowd with their "Smashing Pumpkins cover Teenage Dirtbag" moody grunge. Kwaito outfit Fabulous Crew then worked hard to lift the mood with a short and bouncy set, setting things up nicely for Kelvin Declined. Mark, the ‘Kelvins’ manic front man, spearheads the band’s enthusiastic onslaught and clearly relishes the opportunity to interact with and entertain his audience. The band have the songs and zip through them with a winning combo of skill, fun and intelligence. When the guitar amp blows half way through the fourth song, the band complete the song and immediately invite the audience to suggest words to be used as the title for an impromptu song to pass the time while the amp is replaced. The word chosen is "bees" and the band launch into a spontaneous jam that results in a decent new song. It finishes, the amp is working and the set continues just as hectically as before. Bleach and About Blank finished off the showcase with very impressive sets, with Bleach performing tracks off their recently released ‘To The Sea’ EP. The DJs for the evening were Charl Chaka and Darren Afrika, and the first Stage Magazine Showcase (of many, we hope!) was a success and cause for much optimism. Credit to Stage Magazine for their worthy efforts, and for inviting a delectable range of models from their Stage Models Agency to the party. Anyone losing their way from Cape Town airport, and arriving unintentionally at this gig, will go home believing that Cape Town has the most beautiful women and the coolest bands. Right on both counts! (SS) ------------- GRAHAM WEIR BRINGS ‘LETTERS...’ TO CAPE TOWN Not The Midnight Mass main-person, Graham Weir, is taking a break from launching the group’s new live CD (‘Live At The Planetarium’) to open a short run of his acclaimed musical drama, ‘Letters From Patient Essop’ at The Baxter in Cape Town. This production, which was written and composed by Weir, is possibly his finest work to date. Robert Grieg of the Sunday Independent had this to say about ‘Essop’ after its Grahamstown performances: "It’s operatic, theatrical, literary, all at once. I think Weir is an extraordinary artist in the breadth of his vision and his ability to use media". Alan Swerdlow, arts critic for SAFM wrote: "Weir sings songs that connect directly with an emotional core, with a voice that is crisp, individual and memorable. His lyrics are some of the most evocative and best -crafted to be heard in this country for a long time, married to his melody lines and rhythms, notable in a local industry that shies away from literary qualities. Bo Petersen's direction is precise and unobtrusive, coaxing subtleties from a dense and discreetly witty text". ‘Letters From Patient Essop’ opens on 16th April and runs at the Baxter Theatre Studio until May 4. Tickets can be purchased from Computicket or at the theatre. He sets off fresh from an amazing gig at the Rainbow Jazz Club in Pinetown KZN where he opened for maskanda giants Phuzikhemesi. Showing their appreciation from the first number played, the 98% black audience almost mobbed Syd at the end. The countrywide interest shown in his latest CD ‘Africa's Not For Sissies’ has been considerable. The album has received some great airtime on many of the stations (particularly SAFM), and has been critically acclaimed in reviews in publications around the country. All this has contributed to sell-out shows in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban. Other news is that there is another Aquarian Quartet album planned for production in 2002. Syd is also talking to famed engineer Ian Osrin with a view to doing his following solo album with him. There is also a collaborative performance project in the planning stage with internationally acclaimed movie director and general cultural ATM Aryan Kaganof. Kaganof is also filming Syd live at the moment for a documentary he is making. Africa's not for sissies!
