Release date April 15. Two of the best and most jaw-dropping tunes on David Holmes' acclaimed mix album 'Come Get It I Got It' have been lifted as a limited edition seven-inch single on the DJ's own 13 Amp label. Rodriguez's strange and beguiling 'Sugarman' is an out-and-out paean to a broad smorgasbord of controlled substances and the ache experienced whilst, ahem, waiting for the man. It is imbued with such a post-Vietnam atmosphere of lost innocence that it brings new heights to a certain brand of Californian wistful alienation. Rodriguez, what a dude you were/are! Altogether now: "silver magic ships, jumpers, coke, sweet mary-jane". And a bag of doughnuts to the first person who can tell us what exactly is a "silver magic ship"? Muddy Waters' 'Tom Cat' is about the other main concern reflected on 'Come Get It I Got It', namely: hot young tail and how to get it. "I'm a tom cat and you're my kitten and I'm sitting here licking my paws," sings Muddy {who would have been 87 this week - ed} in a voice intimating that it might not only be his paws he's interested in having licked. Taken from his amazing 'Electric Mud' record this is one record you have just got to own. (13 Amp press release, thanks to Tim Forster) RODRIGUEZ http://SugarMan.org --------------- FAITHLESS TO RETURN FOR SECOND SA TOUR UK dance outfit Faithless are set to return to South Africa for a further six concerts, following their previous SA visit alongside The Prodigy, in 1999. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES --------------------------------------------------- FELIX LABAND RELEASES SECOND ALBUM - '4/4 DOWN THE STAIRS' (ADOPECD005) It’s called ‘4/4 Down The Stairs’, it’s the sequel to his debut album ‘New Shoes In June’, and it’s another seriously strange and soothing set of tracks from Felix Laband on the African Dope label. It’s been described as "a twisted masterpiece from Cape Town's original ambient punk... Felix Laband takes you on a ride through his world of quirky beats, exotic melodies, moody soundscapes, rumbling sub-basslines, and some cheeky samples twisted together in his distinctive downtempo style". ‘4/4 Down The Stairs’ has just hit the streets in SA (distributed by Bowline) and it'll be out in Europe in May 2002 (distributed by Lowlands). Look out for its outrageous pink packaging and its first single ‘Donkey Rattle’ a storming kwaito/electro punk tune with the nastiest of basslines - it's already gettin' dj's all hot under the collar down south... Free MP3 of the track 'Sleepwalking’ at: http://www.africandope.co.za/mp3/felix/44_down_the_stairs/sleepwalking.mp3 ---------------- MOODPHASE 5IVE’S REMIX ALBUM MoodPhase 5ive have just released their second album featuring various previously-unreleased tracks as well as some remixes of the songs off their successful ‘Steady On’ debut album from 2001. The album seems to be titled ‘MoodPhase 5ive In Supadeluxe Mode - Limited Edition Reconstructions & Rare' and again on the African Dope label (ADOPECD006) and again showcases the groups cooking hybrid of hip-hop, drum ‘n bass, dub, downtempo and funk, that saw them appearing on the 2001 North Sea Jazz Festival bill, and also gaining a strong cult following in Prague. Among the top local producers who were tasked with remixing these tracks were the Kalahari Surfers, Felix Laband, Mime, Sibot, Anti-hero, and Bombshelter Hi-Fi. There are also some "choice buds from the Moodphase5ive rehearsal room" and some rare live bootlegs from the band’s performances at 206 in Jozi, and Pilsen in the Czech Republic. The first single ‘Gotta Give’ features Godessa, and the video was produced by Big World Cinema in Cape Town. This album is just a little something to keep you smiling until the band's next album, which is due for release later this year. ------------------- IAN HENDERSON’S ‘FREEFALL’ Ian Henderson's brand new album, ‘Freefall’, will be out on N3 Records in April. With a funky, quirky outlook and copious doses of style and sass, its ten "new wave acoustic" songs of anger, hope, love, despair and delight will catch off guard a listening public trained to the conventional. The album promo tour begins in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Bloemfontein in April, with a full band. Dates will be made available on the website shortly. Download the E-card for ‘Freefall’, or check out all the news, images, oddball writing and cool design on the website at: http://www.ianhenderson.co.za ------------------ PJ POWERS - 'TALK TO ME' On the cover of this CD, the spiky and spunky new-look Penelope Jane Powers reaches out as if to grab you and pull you in. And that's exactly what the music on this album does. It talks to the listener on so many different levels. It could easily have been titled "The Many Faces of PJ Powers" as is features her in a variety of roles. She moves easily from Mama Africa to rock chick, torch singer, raver, Gospel shouter and pop star (watch out, Kylie). This 14 track album includes a few new original songs as well as some cover versions. Included here is a cover of her own big hit 'Feel So Strong' which was originally a duet with Steve Kekana in 1983. Half of the songs on 'Talk To Me' have been composed (or co-composed) by PJ herself. Her deep voice is perfectly suited to Bonnie Tyler and Kim Carnes type songs and here she sings a wonderful uptempo version of Kim's hit from 1981, 'Bette Davis Eyes'. Another great cover is the version of 'Let That River Roll' which was originally recorded by Hocus (formed in South Africa by Mutt Lange; Mr Twain to you) in 1971. PJ puts on her best Björk voice for 'Blue' and does some Macy Gray inflections for a re-recording of 'There Is An Answer' which PJ had originally released on her first solo album in 1986. Among the many favourites of mine on this CD is the quirky 'Crazy', an unlisted 14th track which has the lyrics "I don't wanna be a bitch" and "I'm simply crazy for you, you are simply crazy...". If you are a fan of PJ Powers then this CD is a must. If you love strong female vocals and excellent musicianship from the likes of Jethro Butow, Paul Hanmer, Fernando Perdigao & Peter Martin, then give this CD a listen. Highly recommended. Released in the U.S. on Elektra and in England on Fly / Cube Records, Kongos was an artistic triumph on the scale of the first Elton John album, but sadly, despite significant contributions from Elton guitarist Caleb Quaye and E.J. producer Gus Dudgeon, the 'Kongos' album failed to ignite the music world the way it should have. Several years before what sadly turned out to be his final album, the John Kongos story was bridged by several other interesting chapters. His early years in South Africa were quite productive, yielding a half dozen albums recorded as Johnny Kongos & The G-Men. Arriving in London at the height of pop psychedelia in 1966, Kongos hooked up with Piccadilly and Pye Records producer John Schroeder. Kongos went on to record a number of tracks with Schroeder at the helm before switching over to Fly / Cube Records. Those key early Kongos tracks on Pye are in ample abundance here on the 26 track archive CD 'Lavender Popcorn - 1966-1969', recently released by the U.K.-based Sanctuary Records Group. Kicking off with four tracks Kongos recorded as John T. Kongos and the group Floribunda Rose, 'Lavender Popcorn' goes the distance with seven tracks recorded by the Kongos-lead paisley-pop art-rock group Scrugg, although the best part of the CD is the inclusion of John¹s 1969 singer-songwriter masterpiece 'Confusions About A Goldfish', included here in it¹s entirety. For the last 30 years it¹s been repeatedly stated that John Kongos never got his fair share of fame and fortune. Kongos clearly had as much talent as the early Cat Stevens, Elton and even David Bowie, all artists that displayed similar recording tendencies and were up and running around the same time. These vital early Kongos sides recorded in London, missing in action for too long until now, are faithfully restored here in all their glory. And for anyone who still doubts the significance of these early Kongos tracks, the colorful psychedelic artwork features a thoroughly researched booklet loaded with heaps of related information to help straighten out the Kongos story. John Kongos http://rock.co.za/legends/johnkongos ----------------- NEW WORLD INSIDE - ‘NEW WORLD INSIDE’ We’re going to have a special anniversary this year, when the Pistol’s ‘God Save The Queen’ single gets re-released to commemorate 25 years since it invisibly topped the British singles charts during the Queen’s Jubilee week. This year sees Queen Elizabeth celebrating 50 years on the throne, and Johnny and the lads will be there to share the moment, again. Since those days, punk rock has never really gone away. It keeps resurfacing wherever young, bored and edgy kids need some hard and fast (and short) songs to soundtrack their lives, and something dangerous and cool to move to. You’ll also hear these punk songs playing over ‘Jackass’ stunts, and on skating and surf videos, giving this vital rock genre continued credibility and new fans. New World Inside are a tight "emotional" punk quartet from Cape Town who have just released their debut 7-track EP on the back of a year of gigging and some strong advance publicity and press. They recently won the University of Stellenbosch ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition, and are currently chewing up all their opposition on the local thrash/bash/Clash circuit. This self-titled EP gets the punk formula down pat - rushing drums, churning bass, twin-squealing guitars, explosion, sudden stop, speedy tune with sneery voice singing about life and girls and then, two minutes and 22 seconds later, that’s it. And all with a touch of humour, reminicent of NOFX, Green Day, the bands on the Fat Wreck label, and Scabby Annie, the wild SA trio from a few years back. The band is Hunter Kennedy (v.g), Francois Badenhorst (v.b), Raffael Rueckert (v.g), and Gerald van Wyk (d) and credit to them for a decent opening shot. None of the earlier songs really stick out, besides ‘Forget About Me’, 'Let’s Skip Class’, and ‘Song In A’. But hidden away towards the end is a little punk-pop gem called ‘Since I Met You’, which signposts something beyond the status quo with its bursts of energy and classic lyrics ("No more lonely nights, no more prison fights, no more prostitutes, no more destitute, things are much better since I met you"). A tight and tough debut, indicating a lot of potential and plenty of confidence. (SS) New World Inside http://rock.co.za/legends/2000plus/new_world_inside.html ------------------- LILO - ‘A FILM’ LILO are Alexander Sudheim (g.v), Graeme Barnes (lg), Dean Henning (d.b), and ‘A Film’ is the deep and dark follow-up to their recent ‘Light Me A Lucifer’ album. The 12 songs on ‘A Film’ work off some very slow and basic musical arrangements (sometimes just two slowly plucked notes, mostly two chord songs) that add very little musical wallpaper to Sudheim’s off-the-wall lyrics, and snail’s pace vocals. The songs often sound a little too close to early, rough Leonard Cohen demos, from his more depressed period, but repeated listenings begin to reveal the heart of this very strange album. Don’t be misled by those cute, young ballerinas on the cover or the band’s name. You can’t dance to this, nor play this while floating in the pool. ‘A Film’ takes a lot of patience and dedication to sit through, and we won’t have any football crowds singing these tunes en masse, but there should be some who will ultimately find this lo-fi hour of music and pain a rewarding experience. CLASSIC ROCK ---------------- SHILOH'S CORNER VELVET UNDERGROUND (in the shadow of the avant-garde) Part 1 of 3 Love and peace had become the anthem of the mid sixties revolution. Just when the whole world was flying high on mescaline and incense, a voice rose up from the dark corridors of New York city. This conflicting overdrive of intellectualism and punk rhythm rock came in the form of a group called the Velvet Underground. The roots of the Underground started out in February 1964 as a virtual entity called the Primitives and an uncomfortable single called "The Ostrich". They also performed as the Warlocks and the Falling Spikes and were regulars at various poetry readings reflecting the hedonistic street life. The group comprised of Lou Reed (contract performer, pianist), John Cale (classical viola) and Walter de Maria (guitar). After various sessions at underground clubs the group was assigned to back a psychedelic entity called the Myddle Class at a high school dance in Summit, New Jersey. A permanent description was needed which resulted in the name Velvet Underground. The name was sourced from a fashionable pulp paperback which came through the suggestion of their newly acquired drummer Angus MacLise. Sadly this puritan poet refused to play for money which resulted in resignation and the eventual exodus to India where he died of malnutrition. Part 2 of 3 next week... Shiloh Noone, Cape Town mailto:shiloh@sarockdigest.com http://www.sarockdigest.com/shiloh Blues and Variation Fine Music Radio 101.3 FM Wednesdays 10 pm -------------- USA FOR AFRICA Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music BOO! - 'SHOOTING STAR' I would not call 'Shooting Star' "quirky pop" as a seller on eBay recently described their 'Pineapple Flava' album. After easing into the album with a couple of gentle songs, Boo! rocks pretty consistently from track to track. If this represents their live show well, I vow (yes, vow) to see Boo's live show if they come to Texas, even if I have to drive to Dallas and stay overnight. (Maybe I can catch two shows that way?) Most of the songs on 'Shooting Star' are live, though some enhancements were added to a few studio tracks. As befitting a traveling band, they recorded these songs on three continents: in South Africa, Belgium, The Netherlands, Holland, and, in the US, North Carolina and Georgia. Audience participation is minimal (about the same as on The Who's wild 'Live At Leeds', if you're familiar with it), which is fine. I don't want some yahoo in the crowd giving a piercing whistle in the middle of a sensitive vocal or guitar solo. But Boo's audiences are enthusiastic though limited to some applause and Boooo! cheers. Boo! upbeat music is guaranteed to leave the crowd pumped and energetic. These three guys put out a nice, satisfyingly complicated, rock sound. This is mostly new material, but Boo! fans will be familiar with songs such as 'Avrocado Pair', 'Wannabe', and 'Lucki'. The band rocks consistently on 'Shooting Star'. Great actors are those I don't catch acting, and Boo! are talented musicians I don't catch showing off -- Chris, Leon, and Ampie are skilled entertainers and that's what they do -- they entertain with talent and intelligence. For those who haven't tried Boo! yet, this mostly up-tempo, always engaging, CD might well be their work to begin with. Rock as it should be (check out the jam on 'Ben Hur'), and I love the line "I love you 'cause you're beautiful" from 'Wannabe'. Not so much quirky pop, but a rocking trio of professionals. But what high praise do I give 'Shooting Star' after listening to it bunches of times? BOOOO! Is there something that went on in the Workshop that you're not telling us Tully? That aside, I could spend the rest of the review raving about the greatness of Lesley's voice, it's sexy, sultry resonance, its angst filled alto tones or simply its power. I could wax lyrical about the wonderful, naked emotion of the lyrics, the baring of the soul, the anger, the pain, the passion that is packed into these 12 great pop rock tunes. Maybe I could heap praises on her great piano and keyboard playing, and equally compliment the guitars of Tully McCully & Jethro Butow for that matter. I could single out 'I'm a Woman', 'Scented Syringa' and 'Critics' as the stand out tracks, mentioning that the first is proud and gutsy, the second a piano driven aural dream while 'Critics' is a brutal reply to obviously brutal critics. It would also be possible for me to throw in a stat about 'I'm a Woman' reaching number 9 and spending 5 weeks on the Radio 5 top 20 if I so desired. Or I could mention that the album sadly did not make the South African album charts. I could say all of the above, and even expand on these issues, but I won't, all I'm going to say is that it's a great album, maybe not quite as good as her debut album, but great all the same. Elvis Presley slipped from the top 10, but this would not be the last the SA charts saw of the king. A couple of classics to be entered the top 20. America's 'Horse with no Name' and Neil Young's 'Heart of Gold' came in at 16 and 20 respectively. (of so iets) Arno Carstens: "Ek gee Kobus! two thumbs up!" Karen Zoid: "Kobus! is moerse cool" Kobus! tree op by die Geraas venue, en die Tassenberg Stalteater op KKNK. http://www.sarockdigest.com/kaktus/stal2002.html ENT Entertainment: mailto:ent@worldonline.co.za Kobus! http://rock.co.za/legends/2000plus/kobus.html ___________________________________________ 6.ROCKLINE - FORUM, REQUESTS AND FEEDBACK ------------------------------------------- JULUKA VINYL AND CASSETTES WANTED 1. To qualify for one of the diplomas the candidate has to pass an entrance exam in rock'n'roll. The Waterford Hotel, Uitenhage is a far way from Boston, but it's the place where one of the most exciting guitarists in South Africa is serving his apprenticeship in the real school of rock'n'roll. Already a local hero, on Thursday and Saturday nights the faithful and not so faithful flock to hear him play his guitar and sing his songs on the rugged side of town, where patrons are reminded that vests, helmets, and boiler suits are not acceptable dressing codes after seven. With a black and white Jack Daniels Old Time plate lurking behind his left shoulder Donovan Hatting, bearded and barefoot, took the stage for a short first set of softer songs. Showing his virtuoso on bass on 'Down Under', 'Ruby Tuesday', and 'Dreadlock Holiday', nimble fingers stroked the thick-stringed instrument. "Why do you play bass?" someone shouted. "Because I play it so damn good," he answered aptly with a thumping version of 'Englishman in New York'. The serious business starts when Donovan Hatting picks up an electric guitar. Starting with an instrumental 'Donovan's Shuffle', there are no holds barred when he cascades up and down the fretboard, his axe becoming an expression of himself. The overplayed barroom standard 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door' took on a new spirit with Donovan's soulful vocal rendition and a long, divine solo, breathing emotion into this simple song of leaving. The intricate 'Private Investigations' followed, the guitarist executing well a complex solo and a solid wall of rhythm slashes. 'Money', the Pink Floyd tune from 'Dark Side of the Moon' was shouted for and duly performed, a staccato type song with a flying solo. One of the highlights of the night was 'Child in Time' with Donovan in top form vocalwise and on guitar, matching every note and more of Ritchie Blackmore's original, incorporating Van Halen kind of tap and dubbing organ parts on guitar in a storming, almost twelve minute version of this hard rock classic. All stops were out now, and the appreciative audience was treated to the heavy Creed ballad 'With Arms Wide Open', an energetic 'Tush', 'Parisienne Walkways' with its searing, sustained notes, and a supremely tasteful and exciting version of the Cream song 'White Room'. Adverse conditions call for innovative measures. Complaining earlier in the evening about the unaffordability of guitar strings, a Bic cigarette lighter stood in for slide duties. Nonetheless, it added fire to a burning rendering of 'Little Red Rooster', a bit of Willie Dixon blues. A Latin-flavored 'Black Magic Woman' and a loose limbed reggae 'Could You be Loved' preceded a thunderous finale of the ZZ Top whorehouse boogie 'La Grange', and a tumultuous 'Born to be Wild', that left this writer's scabrous ears aloft. The music, the beers, and also the sideshows made this an evening to remember. Not easy to forget will be a wobbly audience member going by the name of Gingerman, who incessantly shouted for 'Cracklin' Rosie', only later to learn that she was not part of the performer's repertoire, because she crackled too many tears. Guitarists don't come better than Donovan Hatting, and with a great rock voice he's a talent to watch. It was worth the while to skip supper and hop on the train to see how this new sensation was passing his entrance exam in rock'n'roll at the institute of Waterford. Adriaan Moolman -------------------- SEMISANE AT THE ROXY South Africa's hottest pop band has barely had a moment to catch its collective breath and consider the very favourable position in which it currently finds itself. Semisane's debut album, ‘A Life Less Strange’, with its many chart singles, has proved to be a huge and continuing success. There is still an incredible national response to the band's subsequent smash hit single, ‘Life (The Theme from Big Brother SA)’, which has gone Platinum and is hot favourite for the ‘Best Pop Single’ SAMA Award. Semisane will be working on their next album in Johannesburg, and will be playing at the Roxy Rhythm Bar in Melville on 6 April from 8.00pm onwards. April 2nd 1pm Oliver Mtukudzi - "Tuku", as he is best known to his fans, has enjoyed a professional music career that has spanned over twenty years and produced forty one original albums, most of them best-sellers. But it is his dedication to the 'live' music scene in Zimbabwe - playing to enthusiastic audiences in even the remotest parts of the country - that has earned him the respect and the place in the people's hearts that he holds today. Tuku was initiated into the world of music in 1977 when he joined the now legendary Wagon Wheels which also featured Thomas Mapfumo. Oliver is also in town to perform at the North Sea Jazz Festival, and we are lucky enough to have been able to secure an in-store performance with an artist rarely seen in Cape Town. Don’t miss this chance to hear him live and to meet this amazing artist. Tues April 2nd 7pm Book Reading & Discussion with Pieter Dirk Uys (Events Room) - For something completely different, in association with Wordsworth Books and Compress Publishers, Compact Disc Wherehouse is proud to welcome Pieter Dirk Uys for an evening of literary delights. For people who may not be aware of Pieter’s novel, ‘Trekking To Teema’, it is a thoroughly South African story of discovery and acceptance. A unique opportunity also awaits as Pieter shares excerpts from his new book, a work in progress documenting his present AIDS-awareness performances already presented at 200 schools and to 400,000 young South Africans. Pieter has become an active AIDS educationalist and has many unique insights into how to reach South African youth regarding this vital issue. There will be a cash bar and the full House of Coffees menu will be available. Sat.
