FALLING MIRROR ANNOUNCE LIVE DATE
http://rock.co.za/fallingmirror

As reported a few weeks back, ‘80’s cult band, Falling Mirror, will be
performing live at The Independent Armchair Theatre in Observatory on
Friday night December 28. Both the original members - Neilen Mirror (v)
and Allan Faull (g) - will be appearing. The band has had a resurgence
of interest following the first release on CD of their ‘Johnny Calls The Chemist’ album and Wonderboom’s popular cover of that album’s title
track.

BAT CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL
Bat Centre, Durban - 28, 29, 30 and 31 December

Take a break from the frenetic rushing around this festive season and
soak up the summer sun, enjoy some hot music and great family
entertainment at the BAT between Christmas and New Year at the Christmas Festival.

The picturesque BAT Centre in the Small Craft harbour in Durban is
hosting a four-day summer Christmas Festival from 28 until 31 December.
There will be a music line-up in the Bat Hall every evening from 7:30pm, culminating with a New Year’s Eve Bat Bash.

- Friday 28 December the BAT will rock with a selection of hot rock acts including Steve and Tara Fataar, Squeal, Butternut, and Dan Kapuejah.

- Saturday 29 December, it is the turn of the women with top female
performers: Imbokodo, Senzeni, and Connie and Fasimba.

- Sunday 30 focuses on Afrofusion with Durban's own Madala Kunene;
Mandla Masuku and Inqwelo Afrika.

- For New Year’s Eve, there will be a six band line-up featuring Sipho
Gumede, KwaMashu super-band Stax, Vusi Ximba, Vusi Mkhize, Iva, Sakhula
and Lalela.

During the day on Saturday and Sunday, there will be children’s
activities, a craft exhibition and a food fair. "We want to ensure that
the festival is child-friendly," says the BAT’s Nise Malange, "We invite families to spend the day with us and bring their children along. We want there to be sufficient activities to be able to entertain the little ones while older family members can browse and enjoy the crafts and food," says Nise.

As it is Christmas, the time of caring, children from homes and
orphanages in the area will be treated to an outing with the compliments of BAT and Durban.

A rainbow of speciality food stalls will be available for browsers to
enjoy and sample and there will be an extensive craft market of locally
made artwork and craft pieces.

The Bat Christmas Festival is sponsored by the Department of Arts,
Culture, Science and Technology, Economic Development and Tourism; KZN
Tourism; Durban Africa and eThekweni Municipality.

* South African Artists

It was another week of a local top 3, in fact the top 5 remained unchanged. Unmoveable at the top was 'Mammy Blue' which moved into double figures with the number of weeks at 1. Neville Whitmill and the Peanut Butter Conspiracy made up the trio.

Middle of the Road clocked up a second top 10 hit with 'Soley Soley', this knocking Hot Chocolate's 'I Believe (in Love)' down to 16. Meanwhile Les Crane (real name Lester Stein) was dropped a place with the Grammy winning spoken version of Max Ehrmann's poem 'Desiderata'. Crane had been a radio DJ who moved into television and it was on The Les Crane Show that the Rolling Stones made their US television debut in 1964.

Lower down the charts there were new entries from Dawn and Tony Christie, but more interestingly was John Kongos' 'Tokoloshe Man' coming in at number 17 to replace Peter Vee's 'Can we get to that'.

Good Day, Bonjour, Guten Tag,

We are preparing the 13th edition of our festival. It will take place in Winterthur, Switzerland from the 9th till the 20th of May 2002. We are programming groups and artists from African countries and from the African diaspora (north and south America, Europe, Caribbean etc.). Please communicate us your artists, contacts, ideas, plans, suggestions, possibilities or, forward this e-mail to some interested people. We are thankful for all advice and help.

To come into our programming process we need an up-to-date file with CD, bio, pressbook, line-up, technical rider and information about the
costs. In most of the cases, we program groups which stay in Europe or

VALIANT @CD WHEREHOUSE

Valiant Swart played a short set at the Cape Town CD Wherehouse on Thursday afternoon, the 20th December. "The Valiant Swart Trio" featured Valiant on vocals and rocking guitar, Schalk van der Merwe from Delta Blue on thumping bass and ex-Springbok Nude Girl Francious Kruger on pounding drums.

I'm not sure what the overseas tourists thought of songs like 'Cybersakkie', 'Die Son Sak in Durbanville' and 'Slangdans' but there was no denying Valiant's enthusiasm for his music and his talent as a rock guitarist. He also performed a great version of 'Vloek van die Kitaar' (dedicated to his old school headmaster) and closed with a stunning 'Mystic Boer' which most of the crowd sang along to.

Valiant was promoting his latest CD 'Boland Punk' which is an excellent compilation of his Afr.Rock tracks from 1988 to 2001 and includes a 2001 mix of 'Mystic Boer' (though my personal favourite is still the live version from the 'Tassenberg All Stars' CD released by Rhythm Records in 2000) and his new track 'Die Bom Kom' which many people have termed "prophetic" considering events of the last few months. (BC)

WATERSHED AND JUST JINGER BLOW AWAY CAPE TOWN CROWD AT THE RIVER CLUB
Friday 21st December

The wind on Friday night outside at the River Club tried to blow us away, but to no avail. What really blew us away was polished and shining performances from 2 of the best pop/rock bands that SA has to offer, Watershed & Just Jinger.

Watershed opened the concert with great gusto and quickly had the audience singing along to songs like 'Great Day' and 'Indigo Girl'. Lucy (I think her name is) was hidden at the back, but her violin and occasional keyboards added an extra dimension to the Watershed sound. They played most of the tracks off their excellent 'In The Meantime' album and also a few numbers which are planned for an album release next year. They came back to play the much requested 'Shine On Me' as an encore.

Just Jinger opened their set with the very appropriate 'Paradise In Summertime' and from then on the rock never stopped. Art was in fine form, chatting to the audience and telling us how much he loves Cape Town and South Africa. They ran through their greatest hits like 'Sugar Man', 'Shallow Waters', 'Like You Madly' and their new hit 'Home' which Art dedicated to his mom, who he said was in the crowd.

Good South African pop/rock is alive and well and living in the spirit of bands like Watershed and Just Jinger. (BC)

BLUE BOTTLE CONCERTS
(by Eccles?)

The Blue Bottles Sunday Music Nights was launched with two wonderful
packed out evenings - 9th and 16th December. This must surely be one of
the world's great music venues - a magic spot down on the Durban Harbour Waterfront.

Featured Musicians at the Blue Bottles Cafe & Bar for the Month of
Sundays in December & January are:

23rd December - Legendary Rock guitarist Ken E Henson with percussion
wizard Richard Ellis and Rock violin virtuoso Dave Tarr will
collectively part the point and guide the boats and people in. Ken E
will be promoting his long-awaited new album of songs - a homespun
collection of new tunes, with Richard and Dave.

30th December - DAD are singer songwriter David Marks with guitar genius Alan Judd, percussion boss Dan Chiorboli, and a host of unknown guests to see the year go by.... Alan and David are also re-launching their debut 1997 CD.

6th January 2002 - The Delta Blues and Mississippi heartache Durban
style with Will Wallace, Richard Haslop and Rob van der Linde. Richard
is not just a pretty radio voice with an encyclopaedic head and heart
for great folk music, he is also an accomplished blues slide guitar
player, a mandolinist and singer. Will Wallace as always will provide
his Electric Guitar style and Vocal harmony as will Rock and Ready
guitar/vocalist Rob Vee.

13th January - The Bluegrass Hillbillies from the Valley of 1000 Hills - The Bandits with their cousins and chickens pull into town on
hang-gliders and micro lights

20th January - Flames legend Steve Fataar and his new partner will set
the Point alight. The whole soul nothing but the soul.

27th January - To be confirmed - Landscape Prayers - Say no more as Nibs van der Spuy and partners part the harbour with their music sculptures

03rd February - To be confirmed - Maskandi Magic Shiyani Ngcobo - The
Zulu Blues Man (as the French dubbed him when he knocked them out in
Paris) will do Durban the same

17th February - Syd Kitchen dishes up his unusual menu of Jazz Poetry
Voice and Guitar to promote his big Birthday and another great CD
release.

A call to all unplugged, acoustic, singer songwriters, poets and
stand-ups:

Bring your instrument and attitude and get down to the Point and join in on any Sunday. Those acts who are not booked or featured, but who wish to perform must arrive before 6pm, put their names down and do a quick sound-check; we are limiting the evenings to 3 maybe 4 acts. First come first served.

LIVE REVIEW ON THE FIRST TWO BLUE BOTTLES CONCERTS

The 9th of December was a magic packed-out evening with a mix of singer
songwriters, some folk and the odd light rocker - Ken E Henson, Richard
Ellis, Fiona Tozer, Mim Erasmus, Will Wallace, Richard Haslop and Rob
van der Linde and DAD. On Sunday the 16th - the Day of Reconciliation -
we heard guest ace guitarist Guy Buttery and poet Dave Nicoll followed
by an evening of Maskandi Music Magic with Zamakile Nkomo and a special
surprise guest, the legendary 14 Shabalala.

Joseph Shabalala, Ladysmith Black Mambazo's leader and producer, brought 14 (and about 30 friends) down to the Blue Bottles, from Bergville. 14 Shabalala, who is described by Joseph Shabalala as "a genuine African Country musician", then took to the stage for an utterly unique second set featuring his whistling tunes, 5 steel-strung battered Nylon Guitar, and body language that speaks volumes - whether you understand Zulu or not.

Joseph is in the process of producing the long-awaited 14 Shabalala CD
at the impressive new Playhouse Recording Studios in Durban - with some
members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, before the group returns to the USA
to perform with Paul Simon at a Mohammed Ali Charity Concert in New
York. Those 14 Shabalala CDs should be released around mid-2002.

3rd Ear Music also plans to re-issue 14 Shabalala's 1990 album of songs
‘Is'tofu eSisha’ (which will include his classic ‘Mandela’) - for the
Hidden Years Project in 2002.

Proceeds from all the BB Sunday evening shows will go to the Hidden
Years Music Archive Project. (*BB does not stand for "you know what"!
It's Blue Bottles.)

JAM / 206 DATES

Wed 26 Dec - 206
This week Max Normal move downstairs to the intimate 206 venue to
present their "side project" storybook rhymes. This will be an
opportunity for Waddy and friends to present their more eclectic work. A down tempo set of Max Normal stories will keep you spellbound. A
definite must for the serious fans.

Thur 27 Dec - 206
The last Spring Break backpacker’s event for this year is a must for all party animals, both foreign and local. Featuring the standard line-up of DJ’s - AK47 and Grinder (Nu Skool Breaks), Boogyman (funk), and special guest. This one is the ideal way to kick off your New Year’s weekend of revelry.

Fri 28 Dec - 206
The Blunted Stuntman ‘breaks’ all the rules with his crew of Nu Skool
Breaks DJs.

Fri 28 Dec - The Jam
One of the finest acts to come out of the country in recent years,
Perez, will be stopping off at The Jam for the Cape Town leg of their
national tour. Great songwriting, accomplished musicianship and some of
the best rock vocal harmonies since the days of folk, make these guys a
quality act. Perez will be supported by the equally brilliant, albeit
lesser-known, Cape Town rockers Flowerheads. In terms of live bands,
this evening is definitely my "single quality" pick of the season.

Sat 29 Dec - 206
Resident band Golliwog moves upstairs to support JHB band PolitBuro. Old Skool breaks DJ’s Honey Bee, Boogyman, and surprise guests will be
funking up the 206 dance floor.

Sat 29 Dec - The Jam
Jo'burg sensation PolitBuro and local funksters Golliwog, will
kick-start your hips in preparation for New Year’s Eve gymnastics. If
you stand still during this one, I suggest that you check to see if you
have a pulse.

Mon 31 Dec - 206
Bob and the Blunted Stuntman repeat last year’s smash New Year’s Eve
party, with a mix of breaks that made 206 famous.

Mon 31 Dec - The Jam
Hip ‘n hop your way into the New Year with Reddy D, Azuhl and the rest
of the Beat Bangaz crew.
